Growing up on tour

The Rolling Stones were at the forefront of the British invasion of bands in the mid-60s. Brian Jones founded the project, whose name was inspired by a Muddy Waters track, in 1962. His interest was not in beat music, as with most British musicians, but in American blues and R&B, playing the sounds of a steel or slide guitar typical of the southern United States, which magically attracted Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. Their pianist Ian Stewart was dropped from the official band lineup in 1963, but worked with the band until his death in 1985. Jagger and Richards took the lead as songwriters when Andrew Loog Oldham became the group’s manager. They initially played blues or rock’n’roll cover songs until their manager urged them to write their own stuff, seeing how the Beatles were very successful with it. Classics like (I can’t get no) Satisfaction and Paint It Black followed, which became international hits. They became the Beatles’ counterpart; with leather jackets, unwashed hair and Jagger’s wild stage show, they made teen hearts beat faster not only in their native England, but also across the pond.

The greatest rock’n’rollers of all time

After a few releases of cover versions of Chuck Berry or Little Richard, they started writing their own material and put themselves on the market as songwriters. With Have you seen your Mother, Standing in the Shadows? or Get Off Of My Cloud they won new fans all over the world. After a brief period of experimentation with psychedelic rock, the group returned to their bluesy roots with Beggars Banquet (1968), Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971) and Exile on Main St. (1972). It was at this time that they were first called the greatest rock and roll band in the world. In the mid-70s and early 80s, the band continued to release commercially successful albums such as Some Girls (1978) and Tattoo You (1981). Band disputes curtailed their creativity in the mid-80s, so they released another two, less successful albums and did not tour again until the early 90s. With Steel Wheels (1989) and the accompanying Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour, performed in stadiums and arenas, they blew away all expectations. They remain one of the greatest live attractions, best enjoyed on live vinyl, of course. (Live in Hawaii or Live in Australia) Also coveted The Greatest Hits on Air. The following tours, most of which lasted a full year, were among the highest-grossing concert tours of all time. Voodoo Lounge Tour (1994-1995), Bridges to Babylon Tour (1997-1998), Licks Tour (2002-2003) and A Bigger Bang (2005-2007). Their consistency, according to musicologist Robert Palmer, is due to traditional truths rooted in rhythm-and-blues and soul music.

Jumping blues legends with gray hair

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Rolling Stone magazine placed them at number 4 of the 100 greatest artists of all time and estimates their record sales at over 250 million. With 30 studio albums, 23-live albums and numerous compilations, the No.1 studio and live album Sticky Fingers, it is impossible to imagine modern music history without the band. They ranked #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Artists chart in 2008 and celebrated their 50th anniversary 4 years later. Their latest album Blue & Lonesome (2016) won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
