A while back Pratt & Moody hit the global soul scene with their Stylart debut 7" "Lost Lost Lost", leaving many exclaiming the words "FIRME ROLA" on its tracks. Some even mistook it for a forgotten oldie. Now this vocal/guitar duo gets together with Cold Diamond & Mink for another dose of grade A soul music.

Not breaking the spell of tautology started with the first 45, "Words Words Words" picks up the tempo from ballad territory into the beat heavy group soul category. The pulsing drum track is laced with majestic horn riffs, tremolo guitar, penny arcade organ, and over everything hover the beautiful lyrics by Pratt and his mysterious harmony singers.

If the first single by Pratt and Moody left you yearning for more soul, this one should blow away the rest of your corporal existence.

Timmion releases yet another dance floor scorcher from the "1634 Lexington Avenue" album by New York soul man Carlton Jumel Smith. With its soul oozing a cappella intro followed with a drum & tambourine break "Woman You Made Me" is a perfect starter for the album. That's not say, it won't work exquisitely in single format in your dj set, jukebox or smoky listening sesh.

Carlton's chops in testifying and performance really get to shine in these uptempo grooves cooked up by Timmion house band Cold Diamond & Mink. Impassionate horn riffs accompany Carlton's re-entry and it's hard to believe there'll be a still body left on the dance floor when he reaches the first verse. The track doesn't stop morphing, but goes through delicate twists and turns wooing the listener in with each measure.

Flip the disc around and rock the instrumental for that early Kool & The Gang or TSU Toronadoes spirit. Which ever you spin, spin it loud and proud!

After hitting hard in the soul circles with his deep Timmion debut single "I Can't Love You No More" and following it with "This Is What Love Looks Like", Carlton Jumel Smith is back at it with an album full of contemporary soul gold. The material mined here is none other than the vintage groove troves of classic 1970's r&b, something the Cold Diamond & Mink crew brews up effortlessly. The songwriting and expression by Carlton carry strong echoes of Curtom productions, Memphis soul and naturally Motown. We're talking about musical traditions he's incorporated into his expression since witnessing James Brown at the Apollo as an 8-year old.

It's been a while since we last heard fresh music the New Orleans heavy weight Willie West, even though his latest tracks "Give It Back" and "I'm Still a Man" have been popping up in funk sets and an odd Jim Jarmusch movie soundtrack. "I Can't Leave You Alone" is Willie in his favorite zone of atmospheric deep soul.

But there is nothing safe about Willie's excursion here, as The Soul Investigators take the mood bravely towards cinematic folk soul. Jimi Tenor's flute lead wraps a thick air of mystique all over the performance as the groups develops it into a standout track in WIllie's catalogue.

These lamentations of love going off-tracks seem dime a dozen in this world, but few tell the story with the same authority as Mr. West. So, quiet down, have a drink, and sink deep into this miserable bliss.

The next installment in Cold Diamond & Mink's soul investigations introduces a three part harmony group from California. "My My My Baby" is a smoking hot group harmony groover that should drop a few jaws at your next dj set.

Thee Baby Cuffs was born out of love for soul music and chicano culture. Their first 45 "Where Did Our Pride Go", came out in 2017 on the Raza del Soul label, covering an unsung early 70's Larry Saunders production. "My My My Baby" continues on the same lane of midtempo soul over funky drums and soulful horn lines. The lyric is your middle of the road love song material, but the group harmony lifts it right off the ground like it's meant to happen in this kind of music.

Get a few copies and rock the instrumental on the B-side before dropping the vocal, if you feel like it. Soul music that's this potent is better enjoyed in excess.

The world has barely recovered from the previous sting of the Scorpio Man, when he lands in another dose. "Cold Turkey Time" from Ernie Hawks' debut album gets a single treatment here arriving back to back with the 45 only track "Tracking Down". The latter should make the b-boys move even if heard in the relaxing steams of a Turkish bath, where its breezy melodies eventually point at.

This next chapter of Timmion's talent scouting in the US will land home with the Purple Heart of Soul, and turn even the coldest of us to the love side. No prisoners taken. It's time for Jonny Benavidez to lay his falsetto over the ever smooth backing of Cold Diamond & Mink. With the sweet as candy mid-pacer "Tell Me That You Love Me" he should go the whole mile.
Those, who have an insatiable thirst for crossover soul sounds by groups such as The Commands and TSU Toronadoes, should snatch up this piece of wax without haste. Texas made and California raised, Jonny has polished his teeth for years in doo wop groups and sung backing harmonies for big names such as Archie Bell and Eugene Pitt from The Jive Five. Currently residing in Austin, Texas he's forming and coating even more sweet tracks for Timmion.
It might not break the charts, but for some with the proper ear for beauty, this will undoubtedly be the new soul record of the year. Have a listen, if you are one of those privileged people.

With this soul jazz slammer, Timmion introduces one of the most iconic Finnish contemporary jazzers, Jukka Eskola. Trumpeter Eskola's Soul Trio sounds exactly, what the name suggests, the golden era of mid 1960's soul jazz. The trio, composed of trumpet, organ and drums, delivers a sound that brings to mind classic Prestige recordings by Jack McDuff, Willis Jackson and Gene Ammons.

Jukka Eskola started to make a name for himself already in the early 2000's but really gained a reputation as the tireless brass handler on Five Corners Quintet, the post millenial powerhouse of dance floor jazz from Helsinki. Since then he's been grinding hard on the international jazz circuit with his own groups and become the trumpet of choice in almost every jazz combo of note from Finland.

"Introducing The Soul Trio" and "Martha's New Moment" are both picked from Eskola's upcoming album on Timmion and should please everybody, who can handle their soul infused with jazz or their jazz with some greasy funk touches. Better get your plate ready, the grill is warming up!

With "Steamy!" Jukka Eskola Soul Trio reaches its second album on Timmion and delivers another sure-shot for the soul jazz thirsty masses. As with his first self titled debut, this troupe of premium Finnish jazzers turns all the relevant corner stones of soulful and progressive jazz, never running too far up the deep end, but always harnessed with expressive sensitivity and professional cool. It's like the 1960's and 1970's global jazz movement got condensed into a radiant ball of hipness, heady and completely unpretentious.

In addition to the two single releases "Tiny B" and "Stick Of A Branch" Soul Trio dip their groove jazz chops into numbers such as "Five On Three", the shuffling "Jongo Street" and the fatback funky "Steamy". There's also a strong strain of Brazil on several tracks from bossa nova to richly percussive rhythms. On the over 7 minute long "Smash" they mellow out into a beautiful mood that sounds like John Patton swinging with a bunch of European cats. There's even a few studio tricks that we'll leave for the listener to discover.

Calling the Soul Trio a group of virtuosic players is an understatement as all of them have been working at it on a professional level since the 1990's. Trumpetist Eskola and drummer Teppo Mäkynen were both a part of the Helsinki nu jazz movement of the time, which later evolved into the now iconic Five Corners Quintet, while organist Mikko Helevä has hammered his Hammond in underground Finnish jazz funk groups for as long as his two band mates. Together they cook up a stew, which is like a bowl of perfect bouillabaisse, rich with flavour and with nice bits to chew on.

Take a pinch of classic Blue Note soul jazz, some stylings from the 1970's afrocentric movement, and streamed to perfection lines of a lead jazz guitar and you've put together the pieces of Sami Linna Quartet's sound. Their album on Timmion is one for the dark evenings, for the first rays of sunlight cracking through a summer mist, for the dance floors of the mind.

Kicking things off is "Black Mountain", a 7-minute mix of unisono tranquility and bursts of energy, giving spacious solos to both Linna and saxophonist Jussi Kannaste. The firm and disciplined groove paves the way for the aptly named "Dreamsville", in which Linna takes the lead accompanied by Mikko Helevä's mellow organ and Dana Hall's gently sparkling drumming. "Umoya" and "Mode For Tomorrow" got a 7" edit release ahead of the album, but here both are revealed in all their glory, the latter clocking at all the way to 11 minutes. The LP finishes up with the swinging but edgy soul jazz of "Clowns", where the rhythm section of Helevä and Hall really get to shine.

Linna, Kannaste and Helevä have played together for two decades and drummer Dana Hall has previously worked with folks such as Ray Charles, Horace Silver and Joe Henderson, so there's combined experience in the quartet to pack the goods. Sami Linna is in the middle of completing his doctoral thesis on the subject of fusing modality and tonality in jazz expression. This serious focus is well reflected in his craft, but delivered with such levity that the listener can just kick back and relax.

The only cover tune on Carlton Jumel Smith's "1634 Lexington Ave." album is not really a cover at all, since it was first cut by Carlton himself already 10 years ago. The sultry 2009 edition of "I'd Better", that was put out on the short-lived UK Soulchoonz label, is a nice piece of programmed mid-tempo modern soul. The new version, now getting a 7" single treatment on Timmion, still sounds miles away from the polished earlier effort.

It starts off with a nice guitar led beat before settling into a sweet Tighten Up groove, a funky road which still has plenty curves to explore, even for Cold Diamond & Mink, who are certainly not lifting water from this particular well for the first time. What remains naturally is Carlton's ultra-soulful vocal performance, and a message of manning up to the max, staying true to your word in front of something divine.

It's not that often you hear a more recent version of a song sounding so that you would think it's the old version. Essentially, what you get is a beautiful piece of xover soul, with timeless swagger, and an instrumental with soulful legs of its own.

Around the year, the sturdy red brick walls of an old Cable Factory stand there like a mountain, facing weathers of all kinds rising from the Gulf of Finland. It might be freezing winter winds whipping the whole shore line into submission, fog heavy as concrete, or the relentless sun of the summer months, softening the asphalt to a boiling point. Whatever the weather may be, the narrow courtyard of the old factory embraces those musicians, who are looking to get down. They gather from all directions, making their way towards a pair of doors that lead towards a flight of stairs, again through a few doors all the way to the last portal, where an open padlock and a loosely hangin crossbar signal that Cold Diamond & Mink are inside, locked in a groove.

Who could it be with them this time, perhaps the jazz prophet Jimi Tenor beaming out of his space ship, maybe it's the golden voiced knight of soul Tuomo "Pratt" Prättälä, the number one trumpet wielding dandy Jukka Eskola or the saxman Pope Puolitaival, who loses nothing in coolness compared to the former? The reel to reel is always there in the monitoring room, catching each analog layer of sound, even the silences and banter between takes. Seppo lays down the guitar and tries to catch the riff on organ instead, Jukka throws a rare tune on the turntable, hoping to guide their unit through that wobbly chorus, Sami waits there bass in hand, maybe already thinking about the next production.

After a whole lot of playing instruments, arranging and taking care of business, after the moon has travelled around the old industrial building for some rotations, Carlton Jumel Smith comes waltzing through those same doors. There's a handful of unnamed tracks waiting for him. He sits there listening and then starts writing, maybe echoes of soul classics from his own record collection in New York projecting inside his mind. Then the tape is rolling again. Starting with a short intro rap Carlton lets it out, singing on the edge of shouting "Woman you made me...". After the vocals are in the can, Carlton ascends out of the basement and heads out to entertain an audience somewhere. Some months later, after the mix is said and done, there's the question of the instrumentals. It seems they're pretty good as they are. And here they are.

Sometimes in soul music history it has seemed that record producers couldn't get enough of a certain backing track, churning out singles after another, chasing for a hit that never came. The latter doesn't really apply to Pratt & Moody's "Lost Lost Lost", which just recently broke 1 million Youtube plays. While stacking up fame in the lowrider soul scene, this beat ballad also caught the ear of the West Coast record collector and dj Mike Noriega, who decided to write fresh lyrics to accompany its instrumental.

"Wondering" that came as a result was brought to life by the singer and industry insider Gerald McCauley, who turned his soul inside out for the performance. In the past McCauley has worked as a musician, A&R man for example in a project involving George Benson and Al Jarreau and even produced a book and documentary on the history of the Fender Rhodes electric piano. Here he slips comfortably into the Cold Diamond & Mink groove, squeezing every drop of heartache on tape.

This version continues the story of "Lost Lost Lost" so gracefully that one can only wonder, if there are more to come. Who will be the next poor soul to sink into this deceivingly blissful bed of roses, filled with piano, drums and slide guitar?

When Hurricane Katrina rolled into New Orleans ten years ago, it left the city and its people devastated for years to come. The storm also inspired several works of music, art and entertainment, most notably "Treme", the acclaimed drama series documenting the people's efforts to get on with their lives after the disaster. One of Katrina's actual survivors was soul singer Willie West, and with "After The Storm" it's his turn to tell a story of what happened.

West digs deep into the emotive part of his memories of what it felt like to leave the destroyed city, his birthplace and musical home. His experience is condensed in its rawest form in the expression "that hurricane gave me the blues", something he still seems to carry around ten years after. The track's lyric is mournful, but the gentle musical backing by The Soul Investigators gives it a light-as-Sunday-morning mood. The track is a perfect pick for all lovers of deep soul ballads, the style that Willie is most at easy with.

For a man, who started his career in music already in the 1950's, Willie West keeps keeping up a surprisingly steady and quality-chocked pace, but what other can be expected from the unsung legend of NOLA soul music. This year his single on Timmion Records "I'm Still A Man (Lord Have Mercy)" was featured in the film "Paterson" by Jim Jarmusch, which had its premier in this year's Cannes Film Festival. The film has received a warm critical welcome and will be out in theaters later in 2016.
