Gary Moore
Blues For Greeny
LP | 1995 | EU | Bootleg (Trading Places)

Irish blues guitar wizard Gary Moore launched his career in Skid Row with Phil Lynott, who would later draft Moore into Thin Lizzy. Heavily influenced by Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green, as well as Clapton, Moore went solo in the late 1970s and after diversions into heavy metal and AOR, returned to the blues in the 1990s. This gatefold edition of Blues For Greeny reissues the loving tribute to Green that adapts some of his greatest compositions, the all-star backing band including former Kinks bassist Andy Pyle, keyboardist Tommy Eyre (who had played with Moore in Greg Lake’s band), and respected blues drummer Graham Walker.

Husband-and-wife soul duo Ike & Tina Turner produced an astounding string of hits during the 1960s and 70s, before Tina found the will to go solo. Unjustly overlooked at its time of release, the duo’s first blues album finds Tina’s passionately powerful voice holding plenty of grit and Ike’s guitar a restrained accompaniment throughout; the take of Sonny Boy Williamson’s ‘Crazy ‘Bout You Baby’ has gripping electric piano and buzzing blues harp and Ike’s ‘Grumbling’ is a killer guitar groove. A good mix of covers and originals, it shows how well the duo could work in the blues idiom. Another great LP for all Ike & Tina fans!

While stationed in Germany in the RAF during the late 1950s and early 1960s, York-born alto and soprano saxophonist Trevor Watts met the drummer John Stevens, with whom he would form the Spontaneous Music Ensemble upon returning to the UK in 1965, which became an important vehicle for British free improvisation. Watts’ spin-off project Amalgam came two years later with Stevens and bassist Jeff Clyne, previously in the Jazz Couriers with Ronnie Scott; their debut LP Prayer For Peace is jazz improv at its most melodic, an unpredictable album of varying shades, with three unique takes of the song ‘Judy’s Smile.’

Modern and grounded in 1960s hard-bop sensibility, the American pianist and composer Albert Dailey (1939 – 1984) had perfect control over his instrument. Since an early age he played with cutting-edge musicians, the likes of Art Blakey, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus and Lee Konitz to name just a few. But despite that, he was an underrated artist during his lifetime receiving deserved recognition only after his death. Renaissance 2 November 1977 is his second album, played by a bold group that includes the voice of Cheryl Alexander, Carter Jefferson on sax, Cecil McBee on bass and features both Cheryl Alexander and Adam Nussbaum on drums.

Abandoning doo-wop for hard funk through Funkadelic and related act Parliament, George Clinton became the cosmic funk warrior extolling sex, drugs, and funk ‘n’ roll, using bubbling bass, rock-star guitars, full horn sections and powerful choruses to venture into funk’s deep space. The P-Funk Power cherry-pics some fine live concert moments from Clinton and his P-Funk All Stars, the highlights including a riveting rendition of ‘Let’s Take It To The Stage,’ and super-extended takes of crowd-pleasers ‘Cosmic Slop’ and ‘Atomic Dog,’ culminating in the excessive funk space trip of ‘Funkentelechy (Where’d You Get That Funk From),’ the man and his band on peak form from start to finish. All killer, no filler!

Jazz-infused prog-rock act Catapilla began in London in 1970, with saxophonists Robert Calvert and Hugh Eaglestone, bassist Dave Taylor (of pop act Edison Lighthouse), drummer Malcolm Frith, guitarist Graham Wilson and expressive clarinet player, Thierry Rheinhardt; vocalist Jo Meek was quickly replaced by her sister, Anna, whose gutsy gasps gave the band its noteworthy difference, along with the woodwinds and brass. Former Millionaires’ bassist Cliff Cooper brought the group to the attention of Black Sabbath’s manager, Patrick Meehan, who got them a contract with Vertigo; like their self-titled debut, second LP Changes has four freaky tracks, but here the band is completely reborn, with bassist Carl Wassard, drummer Brian Hanson and keyboardist Ralph Rolinson backing Rheinhardt and Meek. Throughout, Rheinhardt’s searing sax blows a musical foil to Meek’s mercurial vocal moods, drifting between atmospheric interludes and brooding bursts on “Reflections,” while “Charing Cross” gets its point across by subjecting Meek’s fragmented vocals to heavy delay. A super esoteric and ultra-rare relic from the stranger end of prog.

Known as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” Irma Thomas was born Irma Lee in the town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, in 1941. After singing in the local Baptist church, she auditionedfor Specialty Records on the cusp of her teens; working as a waitress, she occasionally sang with blues veteran Tommy Ridgley, who helped broker a record deal with the short-lived independent, Ron Records, for her debut single, “Don’t Mess With My Man,” released when she was only 18 years old, which reached the number 22 position on the Billboard chars. The singer’s tumultuous private life sometimes disrupted her career; by the age of 19 she had four children and had already been married twice, the last name of her second ex-husband becoming her permanent stage name. In 1961 she signed with the Minit label, where she worked closely with gifted arranger Allen Toussaint, and when the Hollywood-based Imperial took over Minit and then became part of Liberty Records, her profile increased dramatically; “Wish Somebody Would Care” was an outstanding chart-topper that led to her debut album and her scorned original, “Time Is On My Side,” inspired an enduring hit interpretation by the Rolling Stones. Sophomore album Take A Look surfaced on Imperial in 1966, but unfortunately, subsequent work for Chess was far less successful. After signing to the Canyon label in 1970, Thomas cut a couple of singles in Macon, Georgia, with Jerry Williams Junior, a singer and producer from Portsmouth, Virginia that issued gritty, lewd funk under the alias Swamp Dogg; though the singles sold well in the south, they were largely overlooked elsewhere. Nevertheless, Williams brought Thomas to Muscle Shoals, Alabama to record the album that would eventually surface as In Between Tears, but the collapse of Canyon delayed its release until 1973, when Williams issued it on his Fungus label. This long-awaited vinyl reissue on deluxe 180gr format comes complete with 4 bonus tracks.

British blues-rock quartet Zior had their roots in the bourgeoning R&B scene that arose during the late 1960s in the southeast coastal city of Southend; they built a strong reputation in live performance, opting for ‘happenings’ in the style of Hawkwind and Pink Floyd that went beyond mere musical events. By the time they recorded their self-titled debut album, issued on Larry Page’s short-lived Nepentha label in 1971, they were clearly influenced by the emergent hard rock/ heavy metal scene of the West Midlands, drawing from Black Sabbath’s discordant riffs and occult influences, along with shrill vocal attacks in Led Zeppelin mode; there were shades of Steppenwolf and the odd Doors-sounding keyboard riff as well (and the Black Sabbath link was heightened by an album design from Keith McMillan, who was responsible for Black Sabbath’s debut cover too). The resultant Zior is a varied ride through different kinds of rock terrain, from blues rock to hard rock and on to whimsical psychedelia and prog-rock, making it hard to classify. Though this debut LP should have heralded a bright beginning, misfortune seemed to dog the band from the start; other recordings were released under the name Monument, the band members listed under aliases, and a second album, Every Inch A Man, was issued in Germany after Zior’s breakup in 1973, without the band’s knowledge or permission.

Getting their start in the mid-1960s as a covers band, the Surrey-based group that began as The Late and who would be forced to take the name Unicorn mid-way through the recording of this excellent debut LP soon understood that originals made better sense, pointed in that direction by the success of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Given greater depth by Gerry Rafferty’s producer, Hugh Murphy, Uphill All The Way makes for superb listening, the musical craftsmanship yielding intricate textures beneath Ken Baker’s dreamy lyrics, the intelligent folk rock complete with country and western underpinnings. A must for UK folk rock fans!

Initially formed in southeast London in the mid-1960s as the Coloured Raisins, obscure black rock quartet Black Velvet infused their sound with soul and reggae undercurrents, a testament to the Caribbean origins of the group members, and the pervasive styles inspiring the black communities that inhabited London’s marginal outskirts. Produced by Don Lawson for the Beacon label, which was launched by the Antiguan businessman and future politician Milton Samuel, Black Velvet’s powerful debut is a snapshot in time of London’s black underground that will appeal to anyone interested in the black British music scene of the early 1970s.

Dando Shaft’s self-titled sophomore set continued to build on the reputation established by their excellent debut, and now the arrival of female singer Polly Bolton added another textural dimension, as heard most clearly on the soaring ‘Riverboat,’ the absence of drums throughout allowing us to fully appreciate the players’ excellent musicianship, with Martin Jenkins’ masterful mandolin, flute and fiddle drawing the sound to higher realms. As it was issued on RCA’s prog sub-label Neon, which folded soon after its release, the LP is as rare as it is excellent—another must-have for fans of progressive folk and psychedelic folk rock.

In the 1971 counterculture comedy You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It, Zalman King tries to find the meaning of life, with Richard Pryor and Robert Downey Jr among the cameos; who better to cut the soundtrack than Steely Dan? Except that the Dan had not officially formed yet! With typical tongue-in-cheek touches, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker rise to the challenge, with fellow Dan guitarist Denny Diaz and drummer John Discepolo of previous vehicle, Jay & the Americans; if you’re a Steely Dan fan, you really need to check out this one-off soundtrack, cut just before they upset the rock applecart with Can’t Buy A Thrill.

English blues outfit Tramp had a fleeting existence in the late 60s and early 70s—here today, gone tomorrow. Based around former John Dummer Blues Band vocalist/ guitarist Dave Kelly and sister Jo Ann on harmonies and occasional lead, the group got a boost from Fleetwood Mac mainstays Mick Fleetwood, Danny Kirwan, and Bob Brunning, as well as former Savoy Blues keyboardist, Bob Hall. If not quite as compelling as their 1969 debut, this 1974 LP has the hallmark touches that made the Mac leaders of the British blues scene. Fleetwood Mac devotees and British blues lover, get stuck in!

In 1967, the English poet George Duffell, alias Jorgy Porgy, decided to set his verses to music, birthing J.P. Sunshine with guitarist/vocalist Rod Goodway of pop act the Pack (later with the Crazy World of Arthur Brown), the line-up expanding with a bassist and bongo player, Duffell’s girlfriend on percussion, and former Pack guitarist Andy Rickell on electric lead. These resultant recordings, cut on basic gear in Duffell’s flat, evidence an individual psychedelic sound, marked by the incestuous claustrophobia of the group’s romantic rivalries, the meandering lyrics and disjointed melodies pointing to the pervasive drug use that ultimately squashed the project. This is psych with a difference: rare, rough, and freaky!

Evolving from London Mod act The Action, Mighty Baby signed to Parlophone on the reputation of their live sets, featuring guitarist Alan King, bassist Mike Evans and drummer Roger Powell, with former Savoy Brown guitarist Martin Stone and keyboardist/sax player Ian Whiteman joining after. Their 1969 debut moved into heavy psych and sophomore set A Jug Of Love took semi-acoustic form, blending bluesy folk and a touch of North African spice into their psychedelic prog, the style reminiscent of the Grateful Dead, but very much their own. An unsung masterpiece, feted by Julian Cope, and here with lyrics insert.

God of Hellfire’ Arthur Brown made an indelible impact in The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, performing outlandish theatrics with a burning helmet and being deported from Italy after a naked appearance at the Palermo Pop Festival in 1970. When his bandmates quit to form Atomic Rooster, Brown formed Kingdom Come to cut three esoteric albums for Polydor, this self-titled sophomore set inspired by the element of water. It’s a deep dive into prog concept territory, with churning organ, pounding bass and drums, wah-wah excursions and Brown’s internal conversations drifting between the speakers. Fantastic stuff!

Georgia-born soul singer Doris Curry began her career as Doris Whittingham after marrying Gus Whittingham of the Cadillacs and after backing Nina Simone on live album A Very Rare Evening, Swamp Dogg renamed her Doris Duke for her acclaimed solo debut, I’m A Loser. The 1975 swansong, Woman, recorded for the British Contempo label and arranged by Gerry Shury, gets it contours from Ultrafunk’s top-notch rhythm section and enhanced by the Armada Orchestra. A neglected classic that remained unjustly obscure, it has superb takes of ‘Woman Of The Ghetto’ and Mavis Staples’ ‘Pick Up The Pieces,’ plus spirited originals.

Glasgow’s boogie proggers Tear Gas grew out of the Mustard band. Debut LP Piggy Go Getter was a blend of hard boogie rock with psychedelic prog leanings and although their eponymous second album continued in roughly the same direction, the musicianship is far stronger here and the prog side of things more nuanced, as heard on songs like ‘The First Time.’ Somehow the deserved fame was not forthcoming, leading the group to morph into the Sensational Alex Harvey band and lead singer David Batchelor to a stellar production career. Yet, Tear Gas remains the best of their hard-to-find catalogue, appealing to hard rockers and prog fans alike.

Proto-prog act Titus Groan came together in London from disparate influences: drummer Jim Toomey, who later played in the Tourists, had a trad jazz background, and then played in a soul act with saxophonist/flutist/oboist Tony Priestland; bassist John Lee had played with jazz saxophonist Dick Morrissey, and guitarist/keyboardist Stuart Cowell was a blues fan, hence the diverse directions of their sole LP. Rare 12-inch ‘Open The Door Homer’ features their cover of the unreleased Bob Dylan song that was also tackled by Fairport Convention, originals ‘Woman Of The World’ and ‘Liverpool’ between blues rock, jazz rock and prog.

Progressive folk act Comus was a true one-off, their unique take on folk rock a spine-tinglingly shocking one, even as the music draws the listener into singalongs. Formed by singer-guitarist Roger Wootton with some art school mates, including guitarist Glen Goring, violinist Colin Pearson and oboist Rob Young, Comus began recording their debut LP for RCA, who dropped them halfway through, leading to further recordings for Dawn with Barry Murray. Every song on this single bears the hallmark of their exceptional take on folk rock, too far ahead of its time to gain favour on release, and all the more to savour now.

Exact Repro OF THE Original With 4 Bonus Tracks. Japanese country rock act Gypsy Blood must be heard to be believed. Released on Vertigo in 1971, their sole LP showed the group simply bursting with talent, Kiyoshi Hayami’s mandolin exceptional and the masterful soft-rock production courtesy of Miki Curtis; drummer Eiichi Tsukasa had earlier been in the Helpful Soul, organist Katsuo Ohno had been in the Spiders, and guitarist/vocalist Hiroaki Nakamura later played in Buzz with future YMO member Yukihiro Takahashi, while none other than Alan Merrill of ‘I Love R‘n’R’ fame completes the picture on piano. A beautiful album, and a very rare beast!

Among the most famous husband-and-wife soul duos of all time, Ike & Tina Turner scored an incredible array of hits in the 1960s and 70s, before Tina finally exited the partnership. The debut LP on the Pompeii label, So Fine dates from 1968, a couple of years after a support slot on a Rolling Stones tour boosted their profiles; in addition to a remake of early hit ‘A Fool In Love,’ there’s an awesome take of Johnny Otis’ ‘So Fine’ and a competent rendition of ‘Shake A Tail Feather.’ Tina is fully in her element, the Ikettes keep up the harmonic pressure, and producer Ike handles the rest. Recommended listening for all soul fans!

Mythical Sussex psychedelic protoprog band Five Day Rain cut an album that never was in 1970, since a dispute nixed its official release. This must-have collection of rarities includes outtakes such as the fuzz box-filled ‘Dartboard’ and the raunchy ‘Floating’, as well as a tasteful cover of Bobby Hebb’s ‘Sunny,’ plus full version of ‘Rough Cut Marmalade.’ ‘Spare The Children,’ released as a 45 by side project Studd Pump is included here too. Required listening for all who wish to understand the Five Day Rain story in full.

Enigmatic psychedelic proto-prog act Five Day Rain was formed in Sussex in the late 1960s by guitarist Rick Sharpe and bassist Clive Shepherd of Iron Prophet, and keyboardist Graham Maitland, who had been in Les Fleur Des Lys with Bryn Haworth, whose brother Kim joined on drums. This mythic self-titled debut has pop harmonies from all 3 members of America in places, the prog spiced with shades of blues, but somehow only 15 acetates were cut before a dispute quashed the project. This lost gem is as unique as it is rare, prefacing Procol Harum, Elton John and Styx in equal measure; grab it and be blown away by the musical complexity.

Experimental prog act East Of Eden’s daring debut album Mercator Projected was released by Deram in 1969. Former Graham Bond Organisation bassist Steve York and drummer Dave Dufort supply the tough rhythmic backbone on which frontman Geoff Nicholson weaves his edgy guitar, with Dave Arbus’s electric violin supplanting what would normally be played on rhythm guitar, Adrian Martins’ sax and flute completing the picture with central European melodies. Hard rocking, melodically meandering, and including a one-off take of ‘Eight Miles High,’ this is prog with a bold difference. A killer set from start to finish!

After backing future Mike Oldfield producer Tom Newman and playing in psychedelic outfit July, percussionist/flutist Jon Field and guitarist Tony Duhig joined forces with bassist Glyn Havard to form experimental prog act Jade Warrior, their non-standard 1971 self-titled debut a work of excellence unjustly overlooked. Veering between acou-stic introspection, searing acid rock and world music interludes, with melody and percussion from Africa and India and nary a drumkit in sight, this pure musical gemstone of uncommon beauty is ripe for rediscovery, and this edition comes with a rare alternate of ‘Telephone Girl’ to boot. Mega!

Jazz guitar legend George Benson began his career unfeasibly young, recording for RCA aged nine. After a spell with organist Jack McDuff, he went solo in the early 1960s, cutting volumes of jazz and soul before belatedly scoring hits as a lead vocalist. Irreplaceable dates from 2003, when Benson had embraced the slick grooves of urban contemporary, working with Robert Bell’s son Hakim, Joshua P Thompson and fellow Babyface collaborator, Joe. This gatefold sleeve reissue comes complete with three songs that appeared on certain later editions, namely ‘Softly, In A Morning Sunrise,’ ‘Take You Out’ and ‘Arizona Sunrise.’

Mixing the theatrical, the operatic and the ghoulish, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was a one-off whose shocking stage tactics helped him find initially fame in the mid-1950s. Recorded in Nashville in 1973 and his sole offering for local label Hot Line, A Portrait Of A Man And His Woman is Hawkins at his most accessible; the title track’s haunting delivery and a remake of calling card ‘I’ve Put A Spell On You’ balanced by bright takes of ‘Itty Bitty Pretty One’ and Conway Twitty’s ‘It’s Only Make Believe,’ with plenty of grunts, shouts and animalistic interjections beneath Hawkins’ operatic and gospel-tinged vibrato. Hawkins fans, take note!

Sandy Bull’s unorthodox approach to guitar was as unique as his personal circumstances. Son of jazz harpist Daphne Hellman and brother to the sitarist Daisy Paradis, Bull became part of the bourgeoning Greenwich Village folk circuit. A move to San Francisco in 1963 found him sharing an apartment with Nubian oud master, Hamza El Din, which had a profound effect on his playing, spurring early world music experiments. The previously unreleased Live In San Francisco features bluesy electric ‘Memphis, Tennessee’ and ‘Instrumental Blues,’ plus the abstract ‘Untitled Instrumental’ and ‘Solo Experimental,’ all classic morsels of Bull wizardry.
