Selda & Ahmet Kaya –Demokrasinin Öncüleri (Pioneers of Democracy) After the coup de etat 12th September 1980; the left wing protest music in Turkey had a temporary decline between 1980-83. After 1984 a new wave left wing protest music called “özgün müzik” (funnny that the same term is used for “original motionpicture soundtrack” ) began and even became a mainstream music that no musician could resist to cover one of these “özgün” pieces. Singers of different genres such as arabesque, pop, rock and Anatolian rock covered these songs. Selda the folk psychedelic socialist diva was very active during 1980s after her short prison experience both as a singer, composer and producer. She founded her own label called “Major Music” and made extensive “özgün” productions. Ahmet Kaya was the most influential figure in 1980s in this genre. He created an eclectic music of folk (aşık tradition), revolutionary marches, arabesque and pop-rock. This album was originally released by Türküola Germany in MC and CD forms in 1995. It consists of pieces from the albums of Selda and Ahmet Kaya. It starts with an introduction of a narrator using the introduction of Ahmet Kaya’s “Alnında Dağ Ateşi” from LP “Yorgun Demokrat” (1987). As the second track we hear a duet of Ahmet and Selda in “Bırak Beni”. “Bırak Beni” is originally from “Ağlama Bebeğim” album of Ahmet from 1985. Selda overdubbed her vocals on a different mix or a version of the song where original lo-fi keyboard is removed and some percussion overdubs were made. Selda’s songs in this compilation are Yuh Yuh (original from 1976 with few overdubs), Dom Dom Kurşunu (original with few overdubs), Almanya Beyleri (Zülfü Livaneli’s composition with nice oboe partitions), Dostum (original with few overdubs), Güzellerin Duası (Great polyphonic arrangement of Esin Engin from 1982), Yaz Gazeteci (original version recorded by Dadaşlar in 1975 with few percussion overdubs). Ahmet Kaya’s songs are generally from 1987 album “Yorgun Demokrat” which was orchestrated by Osman İşmen who is famous with his disco folk medleys such as “Diskomatik Katibim”. The tracks from the referred album are “Yorgun Demokrat”, “Tut Ki Gecedir”, “Katlime Ferman” and “Hani Benim Gençliğim”. “Yorgun Demokrat” was sure the most rockable album of Ahmet Kaya which was performed live with Die Kanaken (ex-band of Cem Karaca in his years in exile, in Germany). The other two tracks of Ahmet Kaya are from 1985 “Ağlama bebeğim” album but with a different mix where the lo-fi keyboard is removed and re-recorded with clean sounds. One is “Aynı Daldaydık” with its nice slap bass and the other is “Geçmiyor Günler”. Thanks to Türküola that we reach its hard to find archieve by these vinyl reissues.

Türküola releases maybe the most outstanding piece of Cem Karaca & Apaşlar in their adventure in Germany. Cem Karaca was a new born Anatolian Pop star from rock’n’roll roots and Apaşlar was a surf band when they united in 1967. In the end of 1967 they toured Germany and began to record with Ferdy Klein Orchestra (which was a version of Werner Müller Orchestra) between 1968-1969. “Gılgamış-Ayrılık Günümüz” is one of the singles recorded as a cooperation between the band and the “big band” . Therefore the A side of the single “Ayrılık Günümüz” (Our Day of Departi reflect this cooperation between Werner Müller Orchestra and CK & Apaşlar with a feeling of mod scene, a rock ballad with polyphonic arrangements. On the other hand the flip side of the single gives out the band’s own groove and performance with the instrumental psychedelic rock peace “Gılgamış” (Gilgamesh). Gılgamış is inspired by the Epic of Gılgamesh and the band plays a powerful groove with a Mesopotamian mood and riffs. The Apaşlar line-up playing in this piece was Mehmet Soyarslan (electric guitar), Seyhan Karabay (bass), and Leon Habib (drums). Beginning with Seyhan Karabay’s solid bass riffs which is followed by drums of Leon Habib serving an energetic groove; Soyarslan plays his Epiphone guitar with psychedelic effects which sometimes take the main theme to a micro tonal scale. Today we have the opportunity to hold this unique piece in compliance with the authentic cover coated with gelatine and its vinyl produced from the master tapes. Thanks to Türküola for this generous reissue for the collectors of Turkish psychedelia.

Türküola gratefully presents an other Barış Manço compilation which gives a full retrospective of the best years of the Turkish psychedelic rock legend. The compilation focuses on the 1967-1971 era of Manço, which is mainly considered as the psychedelic years when the typical Anatolian Pop sound was evolving and Manço was more a rocker than a semi conservative pop folk singer of a neo-Ottoman aura. In the compilation we hear his works with his bands Les Mistigris (Seher Vakti), Kaygısızlar (near in all songs including Bebek, Boğaziçi etc.), Etc (in Dağlar Dağlar 1 &2 , Küçük Bir Gece Müziği (which is a psyche- adaptation Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nacht Musik” and Derule), Moğollar (Binboğanın Kızı, İşte Hendek İşte Deve). “Binboğanın Kızı” explodes a prog- rock bomb with the legendary Moğollar with Hammond solos of Murat Ses, “Ağlama Değmez Hayat” pushes the limits of Turkish traditional music instruments with its raw but powerful groove, “Küçük Bir Gece Müziği” covers Mozart with its powerful guitars with screaming wah wah pedals, “Boğaziçi” (Bosphorus) gives a mystical and psychedelic mood which would later be a signature of Manço in his electronic prog years . “İşte Barış İşte Manço” will be a good start for the absolute beginners, thanks to traditional Türküola quality...

Cem Karaca & Kardaşlar You may have seen a Kardaşlar &Apaşlar compilation LP or a Cem Karaca Lp with some Kardaşlar tracks or even you may have listened to a theatre score of CK & Kardaşlar; but it’s for sure that you haven’t seen or heard a Cem Karaca & Kardaşlar LP fully dedicated to the band’s whole career. This was a dream for every psychedelic rock collector to reveal such an LP but it was Türküola’s success to make such an LP. This LP with the gorgeous cover artwork displays the two significant line ups of the band. The front cover displays the band’s first fab four line up consisted of Ünol Büyükgönenç (guitar, saz), Seyhan Karabay (bass, electric ıklığ), Alex Wiska (guitar, bass), Hüseyin Sultanoğlu (drums) while the back cover displays Ünol, Seyhan, Fehiman Uğurdemir (guitar, bass), Cengiz Teoman (drums). The band has a special and unique soundscape created with solid bass, tom drums and electric iklig that can even be called a mystical psychedelia. You can hear gigantic double guitar fuzz solos in “Tatlı Dillim”, groovy beats in “Demedim mi” and mind blowing solid basses in “Kara Üzüm” . Enjoy a band’s whole career with the majestic and gigantic rock singer Cem Karaca with Türküola Quality !!

Sezen Aksu-Firuze Firuze is a coming of an age album released in 1984. Till that time Turkish Popular Music fully depended on a western type of music with a certain amount of Turkish influence. On the other hand there was a parallel popular music called arabesque which was an eclectic stuff of Arab, Byzantine and Turkish music flirting with western scales. The title track Firuze which was composed and arranged by famous musician and multi-instrumentalist Attila Özdemiroğlu was a revolutionary song which made a fusion of two parallel popular music genres of Turkey. In an objective sense this track and the album was the pioneer of the popular music boom of Turkey that took place in 1990s. Today a typical Turkish pop music is a fusion of arabesque, Andalusian and Turkish elements with basic western harmonies. The album has also a track of Orhan Gencebay called Zelzele (earthquake) which was first performed in this LP by Sezen Aksu and later recorded by Gencebay in a best of album in early 2000s.

The album is mostly consisted of the works of Ferdi Tayfur dated 1972 to 1975. The tracks are mostly released as singles and were also used in Tayfur’s self-titled album released in 1974. Tayfur is well known arabesque singer and composer who uses extensive amount of western harmony, instruments and in some tracks are even inspired from the golden age of psychedelic rock. These compositions are widely covered by Anatolian Rock singers such as Gülden Karaböcek. What you will hear in this album is a crazy eclectic stuff of Latin, arabesque, rock and delirious Farfisa organs. Enjoy!

Orhan Gencebay-Gönül Bağlarında Türküola continues to recreate its tradition with its new vinyl reissues that has been a great catalogue already. Orhan Gencebay’s LP called Gönül Bağlarında is not a reissue but an album that displays the early years of Gencebay that were not previously presented in an album form before. The songs were generally released on Türkofon and Topkapı singles between 1968-1970. Some of them reflect the folkloric period of Gencebay while others give us a retrospective of his early experimental days of creating his genre called arabesque which was a bridge from a fusion of all types of eastern music to West. Moreover we also get caught by a superb sound which is a result of Hamit Akbay’s analog mastering which is a good coincidence with the first pressing of this historical compilation. Briefly it can be said that this is the debut album of Orhan Gencebay’s unknown discography.

Türküola proudly presents a brand new Cem Karaca album where most of the songs made their premieres inside this release. From the original masters of Türküola, we will be hearing Apaşlar, Ferdy Klein and even Dervişan era of Cem Karaca with English lyrics. As the opening track, we hear “Mutlaka Yavrum” which he recorded with Dervişan in 1975 which is really a political piece also with English lyrics. Karaca tells the stories of the children in refugee camps because of the Palestine and Israel conflict. The English versions of “Kendim Ettim Kendim Buldum”, “Emmioğlu”, “Muhtar” and “Baba” have the same playback with their Turkish versions but this time directly and faithfully transferred from their original masters. These tracks were recorded with Ferdy Klein Orchestra in 1970. The Turkish versions of these songs were previously released but the English ones were in the treasure box till now. “Tears”(Resimdeki Gözyaşları), “No No No” (Emrah 1970), “Why” (Oy Babo) and “Istanbul” (Istanbul’u Dinliyorum) are the recordings of Apaşlar with the support of Ferdy Klein Orchestra dated 1968 and the English versions were also released in the same era as two separate singles. In this album, we also hear instrumental tracks played by Apaşlar with the support of Ferdy Klein Orchestra namely “Memories of Marmara” (Emrah 1970) where vocal parts are replaced with strings, “Laila’s Dream” (Resimdeki Gözyaşalrı-Tears) where vocal parts are given with brass and solo sax, “Oy Bana Bana” where vocal parts are replaced with electric guitar and sax. These three songs were previously released in the LP of The Bosporus Sound Orchestra named “Laila’s Dream” which had been released by United Artists, Liberty, and Türkofon before. The Bosporus Sound Orchestra was, of course, Ferdy Klein’s pseudonym for his orchestra. Thanks to Türküola for making these legendary recordings meet its collectors and Anatolian Pop fans via faithfully transferred master recordings.

Ferdi Tayfur-Kurtuldum Ferdi Tayfur is one of the best figures in the World of arabesque in Turkey. Arabesque is a musical genre like the Laiko of Greek people which combines folk and Middle Eastern elements with usually a western harmonization. In those days Tayfur was making collaborations with eclectic musical geniuses such as Özer Şenay and Mustafa Sayan. The LP is from 1985 when analogue recording and one take sessions were in place in Turkish musical industry. Therefore the LP reflects the innocent days of arabesque and popular music in Turkey. The experiments were at their peak in the album. You can even hear an upbeat drum beats accompanied by the signature grieving singing of Ferdi Tayfur. The music is fantastic, the cover is fantastic, the period which the LP captures the soul is fabolous. Enjoy with Türküola Quality !!!

Türküola’s new vinyl release of Kayalarınoğlu 2023 is based on Barış Manço & Kurtalan Ekspres’ 1975 album “2023”. On the other hand you can hear tracks like “Estergon Kalesi”, “Ben Bilirim Ben Bilirim” as well. “Estergon Kalesi” was the latest single released before the 2023 LP and “Ben Bilirim” was the A side of the single which contained single version “2023” at the flipside. In addition to these additional tracks you can hear the unedited version of “Kolbastı” first time on vinyl.
2023 was Manço’s most experimental album which contained a lot of electronic sounds of analogue synthesizers and also early drum machines. The track “Kayaların Oğlu-2023” has a touch of early electronic music of its age just like Jean Michael Jarre and Chezlaw Niemen. “Ben Bilirim” is a power funky song while the band’s experiments in Baykoca Destanı drives us to concept albums of pogressive rock groups such as Genesis, Yes, Renaissance etc. You can hear moody Anatolian Rock ballads in “Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım” and “Yol Verin ağalar Beyler”. In both tracks you can hear a powerful rhythm section formed of two drummers and one percussionist.
The cover art also reflects the esthetic approach of Türküola during 1970s and 1980s. After the accurate reissues of 2023 by different companies, Türküola gives a new path to interpret the album once again but this time in a new vision.

Türküola continues Manço Mania with the release of Sakla Samanı Gelir Zamanı (Waste Not Want Not) for the second time after 10 years with a fantastic cover that reflects its eclectic aesthetics. The album was originally released by Yavuz Records in Turkey and was actually a compilation of songs previously released in 45 rpm singles. However, Türküola preferred to remove two original songs and place 6 songs like Hal Hal (1980), İşte Hendek İşte Deve (alternative version of Kurtalan Ekspres in 1973) Eğri Büğrü (Recorded in 1979, released as flipside of Hal Hal) and Vur Ha Vur (as flip side of Rezil Dede) and Gülme Ha Gülme (flip side of nazar Eyle-1974 and first time in Sakla Samani LP because it has not been used in the tracklist of 2008 release) instead which made the LP more fascinating than ever. In fact this LP is not the identical reissue of Sakla Samani but Türküola’s interpretation of how it really should be.

Mega Manço is Barış Manço’s third album which was recorded without Kurtalan Ekspres. The arrangements are by Garo Mafyan the veteran keyboardist of “Turkish Chicago” called İstanbul Gelişim. The album is first time on vinyl. While some songs reflect the modern synthe pop age of Manço, some songs have strong references from his Anatolian rock group music period. Süleyman reflects his singles period with Moğollar such as İşte Hendek İşte Deve. Diral Dedenin Düdüğü reminds us of 1981-83 era of Manço which reflects an Anatolian Rock attitude with Arabic influences. Hemşerim Memleket Nire has also important references to the legendary 2023 album, as the song is based on the critical bass lines of the electronic music hit, 2023. The album also contains an instrumental track called Rüya which is a composition of Manço in a Yanni style new age based on piano and strings. In the album you can also hear a significant electro pop hit of Manço named Ayı which had a great popularity among children at that time period when Manço was a fabulous figure for children because of his TV shows. Türküola is once again in place to make such an important album available on vinyl for the first time.
