Amongst hip-hop fans, Boogie Down Productions’ first two albums – Criminal Minded (1987) and By All Means Necessary (1988) – both loom very large. And for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s’ most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. That being said, too many people sleep on BDP’s third LP, Ghetto Music. Released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the group’s first two. As on By All Means Necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and DJ Scott LaRock, KRS-One pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. Musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his “Edutainment” syllabus. Lyrically there was never a question about KRS’ power, and on Ghetto Music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. Clear cases in point are two of the album’s singles, “You Must Learn” and “Why Is That?” but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece “Who Protects Us From You” (still sadly relevant in 2017), “Ghetto Music” and “World Peace.” Still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

Following last year’s out-of-nowhere debut album, The Du-Rites (an NYC funk duo comprised of multi-instrumentalists J-Zone and Pablo Martin) return with a new double-sided snack, “Bite It” b/w “Bocho’s Groove”.Individually, J-Zone and Pablo are known for their exploits as a hip-hop producer/MC and the guitarist in the current line-up of the legendary Tom Tom Club, respectively. But as they continue their roll as The Du-Rites with this release and their forthcoming sophomore LP, Greasy Listening, their divergent backgrounds continue to cook up a brand of funk that’s entirely their own. “Bite It” - with drummer J-Zone’s numerous (and super funky) open drum breaks and organ riffs and Pablo’s blistering psychedelic guitar solo - is an example of hip-hop and psych throwing a greasy funk party and The Meters show up to crash it. The flip, “Bocho’s Groove,” raises the tempo for the dance floor, but the funk is no less heavy. Zone keeps the sticks flying with the b-boys and girls in mind, comps with the organ and peppers in his trademark dialogue cuts, while Pablo’s Fender Rhodes and guitar work evoke the funkier moments of ‘70s cop show scores. The Du-Rites self-titled debut LP (on ReDefinition Records) sold through its limited 500 pressing in one month. This single has been pressed in the same quantity. If you snooze, you lose, dig?!

The mark that the late producer J Dilla left upon hip-hop during the 90s and early-to-mid 00s is undeniable, and his work with De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, and many more has long been cemented in the annals of hip-hop history. It was during his time as a member of seminal Detroit group Slum Village however that ranks as among his greatest. His work with rappers Baatin and T3 would be a strong influence uponmodern rappers like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, and earn widespread critical praise, and comparisons to other legendary groups like A Tribe Called Quest. In speaking retrospectively on their most famous album ""Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1"", The Roots' drummer Questlove has said of the release that it "single-handedly birthed neo-soul."J Dilla has been gone for over 10 years now, and Slum Village has moved on from their time with the legendary beatsmith, recruiting new members along the way. Despite this, new Dilla compositions are still being discovered, and his legacy continues to be shared and celebrated with a modern hip-hop audience. Ne'Astra Music Group now presents a new compilation of rare Dilla material: Vol. 0. Ten tracks featuring the classic SlumVillage lineup of Dilla on vocals and production, with Baatin & T3 also on the mic, collected by modern SV member Young RJ from unreleased material and demosrecorded between 1994 and 1997. The knowledgable hip-hop head may recognize key tracks from the circulated EPHCY Sessions, while others have never seen the light of day. A piece of hip-hop history that would have otherwise wallowed in obscurity, until now.

Genre:Hip Hop
On the West Coast, gangsta rap held sway in hip-hop as the 21st century began. The alternative and conscious rap music of the early-to-mid-90s had all but faded into the underground. The scene was set for a comeback, perhaps as a backlash to the perceived violence and misogyny ofgangsta rap's content. Leading the resurgence of alternative hip-hop were groups like Jurassic 5, and recentsignees to Capitol Records; a West coast trio that had been building steam underground since the early 90s called Dilated Peoples.Anticipation was high for the release of the debut album from Evidence, Rakaa, and DJ Babu. (Of the influential turntablist collective Beat Junkies.) When The Platform arrived in May of 2000 it was met with critical and underground acclaim, as well as affording Dilated Peoples their first Billboard chartings. It featured a back-to-basics sound with a heavy debt to the old-school hip-hop ethos, the kind of sound that harkened back to the early days of legends like De La Soul & A Tribe Called Quest. Hits like""No Retreat"" and ""The Platform"" were bolstered by Evidence & Rakaa's subtle, abstract wit, and swift, adroit wordplay, while DJ Babu provided production chops and dextrous scratches. On The Platform the trio were joined by the likes of B-Real, Tha Alkoholiks, Everlast, PlanetAsia, and many more providing guest vocals, while boasting guest production from The Alchemist & Kut Masta Kurt, among others.Since its 2000 release this influential record, which heralded the return of alternative hip-hop, has never seena vinyl reissue. With that, Get On Down-always on top of giving the greatest hip-hop albums their due-is proud to present this re-release of The Platform. The rhymes are still fresh, the production is still pristine, and the album is now back on vinyl for the first time in 17 years.

Now the redheaded kingpin steps forward with his “Relationships” LP on Fool’s Gold, a 16 track album of collaborations that are unconventional, unexpected and all-the-way live (literally: each song was recorded in-person with Nick behind the boards, a refreshing move in the email verse era).Featuring a festival-worthy lineup of new school rap upstarts (21 Savage, Novelist, ILoveMakonnen) and fellow beat radicals (Prefuse 73, Hudson Mohawke, the late DJ Rashad), Relationships isn’t just the world’s greatest party guestlist, but a chronicle of Nick’s year long, after-midnight vision quest—the sound of a producer breaking through the chrysalis, killing the ego, and raising the bar. Windy City Collective Tomorrow Kings’ Skech185 still hails as one of the most talented MCs to ever emerge from the city of Chicago. Armed with a constant penchant for uncovering the new sound, Skech185 has been practicing standing out since the early 2000’s, moving from exceptional performances in street battle cyphers to genre-creating in the recording booth with a dexterity unparalleled by his peers. Your favorite rappers (with whom Skech185 has either toured, shared the stage, and or competed) revere his severe case of witty and abrasive tongue-in-cheek speak in hard to discover catacombs, and depend on Masonic oaths to keep the secret. Now enter Houston’s Analog(ue) Tape Dispenser, a master craftsman and sonic co-pilot with wav files and elixirs who produced the duo’s critically acclaimed 2011 debut, entitled “New Age Middle Finger”. Analog(ue) Tape Dispenser’s textures range from hard-hitting and up tempo instrumentals to deep bass and slow-stewing cauldrons of decentered electronic audio. You may have heard him as the sole composer on Milo’s “Things that Happen at Night”. Five years after “New Age Middle Finger”, Analog(ue) Tape Dispenser and Skech185 now refer to themselves as “War Church,” and request that you respect them and do the same.

In commemoration of its 25th anniversary Interscope presents the reissue of “2Pacalypse Now”. “2Pacalypse Now” is the debut studio album by American rapper 2Pac. It was released on November 1991, by Interscope Records and EastWest Records America. Less polished than it later proceed with his studio album, “2Pacalypse Now”, which is 2Pac's commentary on contemporary social issues facing American society such as racism, police brutality, poverty, black on black crime, and teenage pregnancy, some issues giving a lyrical glimpse into the world of a young black man on the urban streets of the United States. It featured three singles; "Brenda's Got a Baby", "Trapped", and "If My Homie Calls". 2Pacalypse Now was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) 1995 for sales of 500,000 copies in the United States. The album generated significant controversy stemming from then-U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle's public criticism after Ronald Ray Howard murdered a Texas state trooper and his defense attorney claimed he was influenced by “2Pacalypse Now” and its strong theme of police brutality. Quayle made the statement, "There's no reason for a record like this to be released. It has no place in our society."

Too many people sleep on Tougher Than Leather, Run-DMC’s fourth album. But hear us out as we plead the case for this amazing LP. By 1988 there was a lot more competition in the rap game – Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. & Rakim, Ice-T and many more had given Hollis, Queens’ prodigal sons lots of competition. But Joe, Darryl and Jay were still at the top of their game, and hip-hop fans should never let this classic – chiefly produced by their Queens neighbor, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Davy D[MX] – get lost in their crates. For starters, the album’s first single, “Run’s House” b/w “Beats To The Rhyme” is arguably the most powerful one-two punch of the trio’s career, showing contenders to the rap throne that they could still destroy a beat, tag-teaming with power at any speed. Not to be lost in the shuffle, fans were also reminded on both sides that Jam-Master Jay remained one of the world’s best DJs, flexing the pinnacle of what would be called “turntablism” a decade later. Both songs show a musical telepathy between all three that has rarely been equaled. The second single, “Mary, Mary,” driven by an infectious Monkees sample, took a different approach, shrewdly ensuring that pop fanswho jumped on the Raising Hell bandwagon had something to chew on. But, like “Walk This Way,” the song wasn’t just bubblegum – there was an edge to it, and the lyrical gymnastics were very real. It wasn’t selling out, it was allowing fans to buy in. “Papa Crazy,” driven in concept and by a sample from the Temptations’ “Papa Was A Rolling Stone,” followed a similar pop-leaning path.Overall, the lyrical content on the album was a step up from the group’s first three LPs. It’s easy to infer, looking back, that they were feeling the heat from their younger competitors in the rap game. The genre was changing fast, and they were up to the challenge. On cutslike “Radio Station” they bring substance to the grooves, by attacking Black Radio for its continual denigration of rap. “Tougher Than Leather” reminds the world that they were still the Kings of Rock, with hard guitars to drive the point home. And “They Call Us Run-DMC” and “Soul To Rock And Roll” both bring things back to their early days, with sure-fire park jam rhymes and killer cuts.Tougher Than Leather, which went platinum up against a lot of competition, perfectly bookends the ‘80s output of one of the decade’s most important groups. It encompasses the full range of the trio’s capabilities, and reminds us that Run-DMC should never be forgotten as both pioneers and party-rockers. And so, we say, long live Joe, Darryl and Jay!

The absurd musical output machine that is Future slowed down a bit in 2016. The 33-year old rapper only released an album, a mixtape and an EP (despite his numerous guest spots on it, Project ET is credited as a DJ Esco release) last year, which is a pretty notable decrease from the pair of mixtapes and studio albums he dropped in 2015. After somehow going a full calendar year without releasing a full-length solo project, the reigning codeine king of Atlanta's workhorse-driven hip-hop scene has returned with a vengeance on “Future”.As confident and playful as Future sounds on this record, the production is the primary reason Future never hits any notable slumps over its 63-minute runtime. Would-be filler tracks like "Super Trapper", "Scrape" and "Flip" are salvaged by their frantic, electric production from Future's most trusted collaborators (Metro Boomin, Southside, DJ Spinz) that you can't help but groove to despite the middling nature of the bars. The quality of the production is essential for trap to work and Future's ear for sharp, inventive beats is as good as you'll find in the genre.“Future” seems like it’s only the start of a new chapter for Mr. Hendrix. The broken man that has dominated his releases over the past couple of years has been replaced by an arrogant one that gratuitously flaunts his success in everyone's faces, and that revamped attitude helps makes this record one of the most consistently enjoyable releases he's put forth to-date.

"Abstractions" is an international collaboration featuring Maryland’s lyricist extraordinaire, K.A.A.N. going in with his signature machine-gun-flow over some of German producer Klaus Layer’s most unique soundscapes to date. Hip-Hop as a genre is big on labels and while many might consider the musical styles demonstrated on here to be “boom-bap” inspired with a side of “lyrical miracle,” there’s more than meets the ear happening here. The project is brief but thanks to the dense layers of both music and introspective wordplay crafted by the artists, listening to "Abstractions" is a very rewarding experience. The two first collaborated on the deep cut, Sleepy Hollow People, from Layer’s Society Collapse LP in 2016. Out of mutual interests and positive fanfare, a whole EP was recorded shortly afterward. Hearing K.A.A.N. rap is a treat for rap connoisseurs as he dynamically delivers complex rhymes with a rare energy, rivaling even the best veteran MCs of yesterday and today. Klaus Layer is no slouch either when it comes to sound design. Evident by the fact that he has become a fixture amongst some of Hip hop's best European imports; his records fly off shelves and he can be found frequently performing in smoky Jazz clubs from France to Moscow and beyond. Known for his viral youtube MPC performances and releasing critically acclaimed instrumental albums year after year since his Redef debut in 2013, "Abstractions" is the first Klaus project to exclusively feature a rapper over his sought after sound. Instrumentals are included on the b-side. To date, both artists have found incredible success respectively that continues to grow (K.A.A.N. notably has recently relocated to Los Angeles but we are not at liberty to disclose any of the prescriptions he’s been writing… *Cough*). On "Abstractions", K.A.A.N. effortlessly proves why he's one of the premiere up and coming MC's adding to his growing back catalog that boasts millions of streams throughout every major online platform. At a time when the world seems to be showing prominent signs of division, it's a record like this that is an example of how music brings people from all races and all corners of the world together. Despite being separated by the Atlantic across two continents, speaking separate languages and living under different government systems, K.A.A.N. and Klaus Layer's Abstractions shows no boundaries exist when great minds unit. It's bigger than hip hop.

“Developing the brain, always measure the aim, feeling pleasant in the present things could never be the same.” - InsightWith great excitement, Redefinition Records is proud to release the latest project from one of hip hop's most multi-talented artists. Making his Redefinition Records feature album debut, Insight the Truncator aka Andre Todman returns to the spotlight with a new album after a departure from the industry in recent years. Where was he and what was he up to? Well after a decade and a half in the business, dozens of respected records, countless national and international tours, Insight took a well-deserved hiatus to try other endeavors such as app development, electronics and social media strategizing in which he found major success. This shouldn't surprise longtime fans who may remember in as early as 1997, Insight created his own website, Insight.fm which even featured an interactive SP1200 and forums. (pre-social media and long before having a web presence was was on most artist’s agendas). Building a strong reputation for his live performance, his on-stage capabilities included not only rapping, but also producing, DJing and simultaneous live drawing. The triple threat from Boston (MC, DJ and producer) has dedicated his life to his creativity and name, catalog and content are a true testament to the kind person Insight is on and off of his recordings. Credited for mentoring and being instrumental in the career beginnings of many of today's staples in Boston Hip Hop and beyond, he also assisted a young D.C. native Damu the Fudgemunk, who later matured into an esteemed solo artist in his own right (and co-owner of Redefinition records). The 2 would first collaborate on one of the greatest hip hop albums of the 2000's as Y Society on 2007's full length, Travel at Your Own Pace. As a result, they formed a brotherhood that today is well into its second decade, bookmarked by this latest release. On Ears Hear Spears, “The Truncator” passionately speaks his mind through rhyme as The Fudgemunk handles all production. Insight offered the following thoughts about the album: "Ears Hear Spears is a milestone in my life that reflects an intersection of so many paths. I had been living in Berlin and was frequently touring at the time for a 4-year stretch. I was just preparing to move back to the US. It was ’07 and the first generation iPhone was released so I started getting into app development, as the music industry was very rapidly changing. As an American under the Bush presidency, I had a lot on my mind. I had only met Damu once at a show in 2004, but we kept in contact for several years prior to our first collaboration. He called me with an album concept and a potential deal with Tres Records. I was on board and felt a responsibility to honestly express myself. We turned in Ears, however, we were shut down at the time by the label (Tres Records, now defunct). They simply said that this album was not what they wanted and expected from us. Damu and I only took about 10 days to do it, but instead of revising it, we shelved it. We quickly recorded a whole new album for label approval (Travel At Your Own Pace). Travel was released and time went on. Over the years, Ears became foreign to me. It got to a point where it seemed like my past speaking to my present. The album discusses the importance of togetherness, using your mind, not being manipulated by the music industry to represent ignorance and yet maintain rawness. Opportunities were limited due to the content in which some suggested was irrelevant and unmarketable. As time progressed, inequality, racism and ignorance moved to the forefront; dominating news and the rising usage of social media. This album became more relevant as time went by. It feels as if it is a duty to release it, before I release the new projects I have planned for the near future. Rather than just point out the negative, hopefully it can help us to find ways to cope and move our mind to a better place." InsightEars Hear Spears is the full-length counterpart to Insight & Damu’s 45 single "Know the Meaning” Remix. Considering the state of the world as we know it today, Insight’s lyrics couldn't possibly be any more relevant and timely than they are right now. This is especially notable being that the album was initially recorded in ’07 (it was unreleased until now). Throughout 10 outstanding tracks Insight delivers a diverse lyrical exhibition over a then 20-21 year old Damu the Fudgemunk's beats. There's an undeniable level of directness and sincerity in his lyrics which are artfully assembled in a manner that will astonish literary buffs, yet permeate the lives of everyday listeners alike.

Time waits for no man, but venerable New York emcee and producer Roc Marci remains a rare exception to the rule. Enchanting listeners with his dexterous lyricism, methodically soulful beats, and steely persona on releases like 2010's critically-acclaimed Marcberg, and his revered 2012 effort, Reloaded, the pride of Hempstead, Long Island emerges from the shadows after a three-year hiatus with the equally spellbinding Rosebudd's Revenge. This is the rapper's fourth studio album. Aside from appearances on landmark releases, including De La Soul's Grammy-nominated And the Anonymous Nobody, and Ka's Days With Dr. Yen Lo, Roc Marci's presence has been scarce, making Rosebudd's Revenge one of the more anticipated hip-hop releases of 2017.Enlisting his band of collaborators to join him on every song on his last release, Roc Marci flips the script on his latest offering. Rosebudd’s Revenge’s lone features are frequent collaborators: Brownsville emcee Ka on the epic sparring session ""Marksmen,"" and Knowledge The Pirate on ""No Smoke."" This uncluttered lineup gives Roc Marci ample space to deliver his tales from the strip. Key selections from Rosebudd's Revenge include the suave, keyboard-laden affair ""Better Know,"" ""Killing Time,"" ""Pig Knuckles,"" and the hard-boiled title-track, and boasts musings that rank among the best of Roc Marci's tenured run.Spilling his fluid flow over production from the likes of Grammy-nominated producer Knxwledge, as well as George Paulin, Animoss, Don C, Modus Op, and himself, Roc Marci reaffirms his placement on the musical avant garde and standing as one of hip-hop's preeminent lyricists on Rosebudd's Revenge, a defining effort that will leave fans salivating for more.

3LP | 1997 | EU | Reissue (Bad Boy)

Genre:Hip Hop
It may have taken the Notorious B.I.G. a few years to follow up his milestone debut, Ready to Die (1994), with another album, but when he did return with Life After Death in 1997, he did so in a huge way. The ambitious album, intended as somewhat of a sequel to Ready to Die, picking up where its predecessor left off, sprawled across the span of two discs, each filled with music, 24 songs in all. You'd expect any album this sprawling to include some lackluster filler. That's not really the case with Life After Death, however. Like 2Pac's All Eyez on Me from a year before, an obvious influence, Biggie's album made extensive use of various producers -- DJ Premier, Easy Mo Bee, Clark Kent, RZA, and more of New York's finest -- resulting in a diverse, eclectic array of songs. Plus, Biggie similarly brought in various guest rappers -- Jay-Z, Lil' Kim, Bone Thugs, Too $hort, L.O.X., Mase -- a few vocalists -- R. Kelly, Angela Winbush, 112 -- and, of course, Puff Daddy, who is much more omnipresent here than on Ready to Die, where he mostly remained on the sidelines. It's perhaps Puffy himself to thank for this album's biggest hits: "Mo Money Mo Problems," "Hypnotize," "Sky's the Limit," three songs that definitely owe much to his pop touch. There's still plenty of the gangsta tales on Life After Death that won Biggie so much admiration on the streets, but it's the pop-laced songs that stand out as highlights. In hindsight, Biggie couldn't have ended his career with a more fitting album than Life After Death. Over the course of only two albums, he achieved every success imaginable, perhaps none greater than this unabashedly over-reaching success. Ready to Die is a milestone album, for sure, but it's nowhere near as extravagant or epic as Life After Death. - allmusic.com

“Is this field recordings of scorpion mating dances, a recovered audio file of NASA ’s evidence of Saturn’s fauna frequencies or perhaps a hot new Tokyo game soundtrack for carving virtual sculptures? None of the above. It’s a continuation of Idaho Joe Windslow’s personal research into the combination of electronic processing with the natural sounds of his homemade acoustic instrumentation like the ‘Gongtar’, cut up singing bowls and tweaked voice resonators. The Bay Area musician has diverged from his previous verse-chorus-verse confessionals into a deeply strange symphonic galactic suite entitled ‘Urban Hiker’ that’s reminiscent of cross-pollinated standard-bearers like Aphex Twin, Harry Partch and Jon Hassell. One finds 21 inspired sound-pictures that emanate an unparalleled variety of ideas and ethno-cultural influences that instantly teleport the listener to a fascinating world thanks to Windlsow’s ever-evolving craft and far-out vision. - Karen, Psychic Sounds Research”
