Antoine Kogut - Sphere Of Existence
Antoine Kogut
Sphere Of Existence
LP | 2018 | EU | Original (Versatile)
20,99 €*
Release:2018 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
9 months of gestation that ignites in 7 titles of contemplative pop, hovering funk, cosmic soul built all this: the jazz fusion of Soft Machine, the krautrock of the wizards of Can, the irresistible languor of Italian crooners (Toto Cutugno and Lucio Battisti in the lead) as the soundtracks, so sensual, composed by Pino Donnagio for Brian de Palma... But if Antoine Kogut makes this references his own, it is because he considers each of the titles of "Sphere of Existence" as «songs, not tracks». With his deep voice he has the ambition to tell us a story through them: his own, and that of the world in which we live with as a guiding idea that all Phillip K. Dick’s predictions have come true today. Which ones? You’ll have to look in the multiple circles assembled by Antoine Kogut to compose "Sphere of Existence".

It was Vladimir Ivkovic who introduced me to the world of Rex Ilusivii. A world where the spirit of a genius holds sway. I remember spending an entire night at Vladimir's house in Germany, listening to all those recovered pieces, and feeling like I had entered another space-time.

Zombie Zombie's debut LP 'A land for renegades' is approaching it's 10th anniversary. A decade is long enough before one should consider a full repress, and guess what? Here it is. The LP that brought the renegades into our world, is back again. The combined sonic assault of Cosmic Newman's motorik drums paired with Etienne Jaumet's prodigious synth skills displayed the basis of their raw, hypnotic sound that has been the Zombie Zombie trademark style for all these years. Oh, and don't forget - there's a bonus - A download code is included for the hardcore and the undead!

5 would be the key number for the brand new Chateau Flight release on Versatile. It's been 5 years since the last release and it took 5 days to record. Nicolas (I:Cube) was busy with his own material, I moved to Amsterdam 3 years ago and as we like to make music in the same space. It took a bit of time but finally it's here; the Dam House EP.

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Pierre Bastien is a French legend that has collaborated with artists such as Robert Wyatt, Jac Berrocal and Jaki Liebezeit, to name just a few. He is also very well known for his compositions based on home-made mechanical instruments, designed and constructed by Bastien himself. Pure DIY. Using these instruments he would create a heady experimental mix incorporating poetry and some far-out music, all in all very intriguing and original indeed. Needless to say when the notion of Pierre Bastien and Versatile Records potentially making a project together arose, it was a total honour! Throw into the mix esteemed electro-acoustic composer Eddie Ladoire and now we've really got something interesting. Eddie and Pierre met when they appeared on the same concert bill together and they decided to collaborate further with Versatile being the platform for the fruits of this particular project. The original version of 'Phantom Dance' is a beautiful piece where Bastien plays a trumpet into some water blended with electronic drums and mellow organs lines, creating an otherworldly, subterranean Jazz vibe for the freaks. Suzanne Kraft, the LA native / Amsterdam based producer turns the original into some mechanical broken funk vibes while Rotterdam's Oceanic delivers 2 fresh, reimagined versions. One for for the club with a strong afro beat feel while the other one is a slower affair for the after hours. Both mixes bringing something new to the table. A truly original and interesting release from some very talented people, for those with open ears and open minds!

3 years on, and after their first critically acclaimed album on Versatile, Five steps (aka Jonathan Fitoussi and Clemens Hourrière), who have been likened to the godfathers of the synthesizer genre (think Suzanne Cianni, François Bayle or Morton Subotnik and you're almost there!) are back with 'Espaces Timbrés' a brand new episode in their exploration of the legendary modular synthesizer - The Buchla, specially crafted for Versatile Records. After 2 years of tireless work, ever pushing and furthering their musical research, Fitoussi and Hourrière reveal to us new territories, textures, sounds and feelings to explore with the help of the equally legendary I:Cube on mixing duties to add even more sonic reflections and mixing desk wizardry. This one's a hyper-jump into the future made possible through a machine from the past, giving birth to those most captivating of electronic mantras... dive in, the water's warm!

Wolf Müller & Versatile label head Gilb’R give the remix treatment to Zombie Zombie’s “Hippocampe” - the first track from their recent “Livity” LP. A long time fan of the band, Jan Schulte (under his Wolf Müller alias), delivers 2 interpretations of the track, combining heavy Krautrock influences à la Can with a distinctive b-boy twist. Gilb’R takes “Hippocampe” in a more minimalistic direction, with heavy drums laying the basis for a dubbed out journey.

It's already been 5 years since the last Zombie Zombie album 'Rituels d’un Nouveau Monde', after which the group explored other territories by signing 2 film scores, namely 'Loubia Hamra' by Narimane Mari and 'Irréprochable' by Sébastien Marnier, as well as creating the music accompanying a contemporary circus show called 'Slow Futur' created by Martin Palisse and Elsa Guérin. Wouldn't these beautiful parentheses make you want to return to the sources? After 10 years at Versatile Records, 2017 also marks the decade anniversary of the release of their first album 'A Land for Renegades' in 2007, at the time considered to be one of the 10 best albums of the year according to Rough Trade.'Livity' - Zombie Zombie's latest opus seems to plunge us deep into science fiction, with a cover designed by the mythic cartoonist Philippe Druillet, who is also the founder of the cult Métal Hurlant comic series. The title of the album is somewhat misleading, as one could mistakenly think of a certain dub record made atthe famous Island Records Compass Point studio in the Bahamas. For the uninitiated 'Livity' or 'Life force' is actually a Rastafarian spiritual concept based on the idea that an energy exists within, and flows through, all people and all living things. The record was recorded last winter in Paris, in a very short time frame. 7 tracks played live in 7 days, by Etienne Jaumet (synthesizers / rhythm box / metallophone / sax), Cosmic Neman (drums / vocals / sound effects), and Dr. Schonberg (percussion / electronics / trumpet), recorded at the Red Bull Studios by Thibaut Javoy and Jerome Caron, 2 very competent engineers. To keep it in the family, the album was then mixed by another member of the Versatile stable, the mysterious and legendary DJ/producer I:Cube, done in the label's Victor Studio. On this album the principles that are dear to the group rest being respected, still as far away as always from the standards of 'radio play', A living kind of music, composed of long instrumental moments recorded with analog synthesizers and drum machines, accompanied by drums and percussion. But I:Cube's touch may bring the unique energy that one may find at Zombie Zombie's concerts; on certain cuts like title track 'Livity' that the group recorded in Laos, a wild combination of 808 kick drums and bewitching jungle sounds that sound quite unlike anything else out there, and especially on 'Hippocampe', which gives the impression of hearing an old school hip hop rhythm with the power of a metal band who have replaced their guitars with an army of synthesizers: we recommend you listen to this particular track in a convertible while speeding down the highway. As with all of Zombie Zombie's music the cinematic component is still strong, on titles like 'Ils existent..' 'Acera' which was originally composed for ciné-concerts accompanying the films of Jean Painlevé et Maurice Pialat. The energy of the beginning is still very present, as is - of course - the kraut inspiration. But it's also an album that takes new directions and sonic risks, like on “Looose”, which brings to mind the Art Ensemble of Chicago, or the groove of James Chance in New York in the early 1980's, featuring the free sax solos of Etienne Jaumet and Dr. Schonberg on the trumpet. The group also offers some slower and calmer titles, like 'Heavy Meditation' as well as exploring more experimental tracks in the line of French 70's groups such as Lard Free or Richard Pinhas, for example on the bonus track 'Black Moon'.Please - Take your time, and enjoy listening!

I discovered Benoit B through his own label - Banlieue records. He's part of a new breed of young French producers who make music without any hang-ups and that are inspired by the entire history of House and Techno and everything in-between. I liked the combination of club beats with a deep, super melodic approach. The 6 tracks featured here almost make up an entire album that reflects Benoit's skills and sense of production. Everything is here -from Ambient experiments to heavyweight club tracks and beyond. Here, bear witness to the new sound of France (even though he lives in Berlin!)

incl. Trevor Jackson RemixAladdin is an atypical project at Versatile, even for Versatile's standards. In the base, the group consisted of Nicolas Ker — singer, chaotic poet (known from Poni Hoax, Paris, and his solo project yet to emerge) — and Gilbert Cohen, boss of the label. The two met in the studio after breaking up with their then-girlfriends, resulting in an album filled with inner pressure. “We were strong so we got lost”, released only on cd in June 2011, selling only 400 copies. And since then... nothing. But thanks to a one-week studio session offered by a brand of energy drink, they met again, attracting Syd Barrett-influenced guitarist Eat Gas as a new member, to record new material. Besides Eat Gas and his haunted guitars, other musicians were lured to the studio to contribute to the latest Aladdin EP: “Girls in Uniform”. Long jam sessions took place, featuring motorik drummer Mark Kerr, bass player Juan de Guillebon, and percussionist Francesco Lopez playing Brazilian percussions like the berimbau, and — hold your breath — the mouth harp. With a cast alike, you’ll understand the listening experience will be a hybrid one; in between rock, dub, kraut, interrupted by a break in the form of a strange fairy tale... Trevor Jackson has been a staunch supporter of the previous album, so asking him for a remix was an obvious choice. Glorified by the success of his compilation on the On-U Sound label, he swings in a remix dark as hell but with an unstoppable heavy groove. At last, Gilb’R delivers a smoky dub, one of the first recordings to roll out of his new Amsterdam studio.

Here comes the solo record from the label honcho. It has been a while ago since Gilb'R hasn't release on his name on a 12inch. Busy with the label and the Chateau Flight project (together with I:Cube) he finally got back in the Versatile basement to deliver 2 deep cuts. While "Master of the illusions" is more House orientated, Approaching Kether is more an intropective ambient proposal.
