“Metropolis” takes one to a trip through metropolitan Berlin at night, a melting pot, where cultural exchange is a constant reality. At his backyard studio in Berlin-Neukölln digitalluc captures the fusion of jazz and hip-hop creating a unique sound that values both musical movements. Thereby he invites plenty of fellow collaborators and old acquaintances to bring his concept of organic hip-hop grooves to life. Contributions come from FloFilz, Made in M, Hubert Daviz, Spanish saxophonist Escandaloso Xpósito and Mexican bass player Monno Briceno, just to name a few.

Forty years ago this summer, Joy Division released what became their only chart hit, Love Will Tear Us Apart.

December 1982, Tokyo. Kiyoaki Iwamoto has a guitar, a simple rhythm box, a friend with a bass guitar, and some stripped-down songs, brazen in their post-punk simplicity, irritation and controlled aggression, yet full of sadness and resignation. Five songs, including a rearranged version of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” are recorded and released on a now extremely rare 7” record. This release, available on 10” vinyl or CD, features those five songs, along with a previously unreleased 1980 live performance by his duo Birei, as well as a 2020 reworking of “Love ...” , by the Japanese duo Chisato and Junta. Iwamoto was an enigma, active in the post-punk scene in Japan in the late 70s and early 80s, a member of Birei and founding member of Guys & Dolls with Tori Kudo (Maher Shalal Hash Baz); in the mid-80s he cut contact with his friends, disavowing his name and later performing under a different moniker. Emotional Rescue looks to the newly rebuilt but still very much culturally separate East and West Germany of the 1980s with this new EP. It's dub reggae through a post-punk and alternative lens by Hanover artists Felix Holter aka Dubvisionist. All these cuts have a very live, improvised feel because father way he worked from rhythms first and jammed endlessly before adding the vocals. They are taken from their 1987 release 10 Tracks Of Reggae & Dub Music which was inspired by the great Adrian Sherwood label On-U Sound label, and you can hear that clearly.

This limited edition Record Store Day, 10” plum Colored Vinyl release features four of Supergrass’ key tracks from 2004-2005. Opening with the melancholic "St. Petersburg" the slow paced thinker that features an iconic and haunting piano riff that charted #22 in 2005 and as of 2022 is their most recent UK Top 40 Hit. Next up is a live version of the classic Supergrass stomper ‘Road To Rouen’ recorded at Somerset House in 2005. The B side opens to a notably different arrangement of their classic track ‘Kiss Of Life’ recorded live at the Portsmouth Pyramid in 2005. Things take a turn as the EP signs off with ‘Coffee In The Pot’, a lively little Surf Rock inspired number that reminds the listener of Supergrass’ unique sense of humour. The artwork has been recreated from the original ‘St Petersburg’ single artwork originally released in 2005, and features the famous statue of Peter the Great, from Saint Petersburg in Russia. Matte paper print finish and printed inner bag.

With the last slice of 10” action on the Make A Dance sub label coming in at 136bpm the guys thought they would slow things down a little and offer up two versions of a boogie classic.

The A side ‘Body II Body’ is a straight dance floor edit, beefed up and chugged out for maximum dancing effect. On the flip ‘Body II Dub’ the boys take things sub 95bpm working with horn player Freddy Wordsworth who provides a Flugelhorn overdub, that combined with 303 acid flecks takes the track in a new tripped out direction.

A side has Donna Summer acapella over a classy smooth 60s Motown groove. Beyonce is looking crazy in the dancehall on top of a classic Kingston cut on the B side. Stamped 7"!

Vladislav Delay presents the third EP in his "Hide Behind The Silence" series with five 10" releases coming throughout 2023. Intuitive and raw music, momentary and reflective, released on Ripatti's own label "Rajaton". -- Stillness is a myth. Consider concepts such as ”still water”, or ”still air” for that matter. Go to a restaurant, ask them for a glass of still water, hold it against the light and see where we’re at. Even though the water itself has been captured and imprisoned in the glass, it never stops breathing. It’s filled with tiny particles, dancing. Everything can be explained on a molecular level, but since we’re not scientists – and even if you happen to be – it’s the natural world of perception that moves me. Still air is very similar. A hot summer’s day with zero wind feels completely still. It’s the closest I have felt to complete stillness. Or for a more urban adaptation, imagine the same vibe inside a normal apartment. In those moments, revelations and mind- blowing experiences can be had with experiments in stillness. Try this: Just sit down for a minute on a sunny day, making sure there’s enough natural light. Do absolutely nothing. Try not to breathe for a bit. (If you need a mental anchor, you can play Cage’s 4’33” in your head but nothing else.) Watch the tiny dots of dust dancing :..’ ̈.:; ́ ́*°.,’:,. ̈ ̈ ̈ ̈:,.’ The movement is crazy, but the feeling of stillness comes from witnessing how subtle it is. In (perceived) complete stillness, every act of microscopic mobility seems to speak volumes. Yet, it feels both reassuring and oddly threatening that the stillness is never complete. What if we would need absolute stillness? Or is it just enough that we can perceive something as such? Extremes attract, so for both water and air, extraordinary movement is equally fascinating. That is also a luxury item of sorts. For us to enjoy a very ”loud” body of water or air, we need to be safe, in enough control of the situation. So when you are, it’s worthwhile to pay attention and take it all in. A rapid flowing free with extreme strength and just barely in control. Look at that water go! No still water on this one, only ”sparkling”. A windy day when birds seem surprised how hard it is to fly, but in the end they make it. Trees bend but don’t break. The wind shows you its movement but doesn’t hurt you. It feels friendly, like a big clumsy dog that doesn’t quite understand its size. It’s beautiful to be a guest of the elements, but not at the mercy of them. A new kind of dialogue forms.

Mono have long drawn equal inspiration from the light and dark of life, spawning more than two decades of musical turbulence and melodic transcendence. Heaven Vol. 1 marks the beginning of a new annual tradition from Mono: A new EP released on Christmas Day each year, leaning into the light at precisely the time when we need it the most - surrounded by loved ones and hopeful for what the turn of the calendar may bring us. Recorded by Takaakira `Taka' Goto at his home studio in Japan (with drums recorded by Amak Golden at Golden Hive Studio in Prague) - and mixed by Rafael Anton Irisarri and Jeremy deVine at Black Knoll Studio in New York - Heaven Vol. 1 finds Mono at their most hopeful and cinematic. Of each of Heaven Vol. 1's three tracks, Mono offers these words: Lucia: "This song was written when our beloved longtime partner Jeremy (the owner of our American label Temporary Residence Ltd.) welcomed his second child. The song is constructed with two parts; the first part celebrates the birth of a new life and the second part heads towards dreams and hope. We wrote this song with the feeling of Santa Claus riding a sleigh through the snowstorm, smiling, jumping into the swirl of pure white light and carrying many dreams." Smile: "We drew upon the snowy scenery of Christmas that we experienced when we were young. Your exhaled breath is white. Your heart is dancing in the endless silvery white world, and when you are about to grab the snow with your hands and turn around, your parents look back at you with a smile. We wrote this song whilst remembering moments like this." Silent Embrace: "Time passed and we became adults. Berlin producer Jack Tennis is the mastermind behind a lot of projects. He releases his own music under the name Hotlane (signed to Gomma Records) and spreads his Disco-Edits for UK’s influential Disco Label Midnight Riot (run by Yam Who!), Spa In Disco and Too Slow To Disco. He has an edit on every Tstd Yacht Disco Edits compilation so far, he was already part of Tstd Edits 2 – Brasil with an edit, and last year he remixed Satin Jackets for Tstd NEO’s “The Sunset Manifesto” - compilation. The 4 tracks on this compilation are regular floor fillers in DJ Supermarkt’s DJ Sets, so it was time to give the ma proper vinyl release. Lots more to come!

Primary Colours Reserve Series returns in 2023 with Youthman, a slung dubbed out, rootz laiden steppa. Echo Inspectors teams up with Queenslander dub heavy weight Subset for his debut along with the smooth stoned out vocals of Prince Morella for this Rhythm & Sound inspired dubber. Joining the PC family is another debutant, long time friend Biodub. Biodub brings his funk and groove to the plate, stepping up the tempo with his signature rhythmic, bass driven sound. The subversive beauty of the Virgin Prunes captured the imagination of a generation during a decade of extraordinary creative activity from 1977 to 1986. The band emerged from a closely knit group of young Dublin musicians called ‘Lypton Village’, some of whom formed U2. They all shared a vehemently anti-patriarchal, anti-establishment spirit and their different religious backgrounds strengthened their mutual interests. They released five albums between 1981 and 1986: A New Form of Beauty (1981), If I Die, I Die (1982), Heresie (1982), Over the Rainbow (a compilation of rarities 1981-1983) (1985) and The Moon Looked Down and Laughed (1986). Following the 40th anniversary of ‘…If I Die, I Die’ in 2022, BMG announce the reissue of their self-titled debut EPs, otherwise known as ‘Twenty Tens (I’ve Been Smoking All Night)’ and ‘Moments & Mine (Despite Straight Lines)’, available on vinyl for the first time since initial release in 1980/1981 respectively. The limited edition package contains two separate 10” EPs on White & Blue vinyl, wrapped in an obi-strip, and includes exclusive lyric sheets.

Belfast-born, Rotterdam-based producer Kessler is back by popular demand. Endless EP - his second SNF release - sees him continue in the spirit of the previous one, deftly capturing moods and building worlds through breaks.

Some of these enchanting worlds are cushioned by warm tonal melodies and an instrumental quality ("Endless"). Others are harder to navigate, with skittish drum workouts which clatter around an already-complex soundscape ("Mare's Nest").

On "Aspect", things get emotional, not a far cry from the provocative nature of Overmono's music. Speaking of which, Belfast producer Optmst is drafted in to close proceedings, reimagining the title track and continuing in the same vein with emotive pads and pitched-up vocal licks.

Pip Blom is a phenomenal young indie rock band from Amsterdam that’s been making waves in England, a BBC radio darling touring with Franz Ferdinand and The Breeders. Pip Blom is both the name of the band and its leader, a dynamic 21-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist. Paycheck, the group’s new EP, is a roaring, attitude-laden offering that maintains their playfulness and knack for melody that’s earned comparisons to Blur and Courtney Barnett.

In 2017, a series of hooky singles Blom uploaded to the internet hit over a million plays, bringing a sudden burst of overseas accolades. The 7-inches sold out quickly, and El Diablo (run by Guided By Voices / Yoko Ono manager) has pressed up just 500 copies of this 10-inch. A-1 "Just Friends" 7:22 (John Klenner and Sam Lewis) This live recording was only issued on a rare 1982 Saturn album entitled Just Friends. So few copies of Just Friends were pressed, that this track is almost unknown to Ra fans. This is the first reissue of this track in any format. The location and actual date of the recording are unknown. A-2 "Just Friends" 3:36 (John Klenner and Sam Lewis). This is a recording made around 1960 of Sun Ra playing organ in his Chicago apartment while softly singing the song "Just Friends." It has not been previously issued in any format. B-1 "Under the Spell of Love" 6:04 (Sun Ra © Enterplanetary Koncepts Bmi). This live recording was also issued on the rare 1982 Saturn album Just Friends. This is the first reissue of this track in any format. As with the title track on side A, the location and actual date of this performance are unknown B-2 "Cherokee" 4:12 (Ray Noble). This work was composed by Ray Noble. "Cherokee" was a 1940s big band standard, and was a big hit for Charlie Barnett. It was also recorded by Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Bud Powell, and many others. This is the only known recording of the title by Sun Ra. There is no information about the date, location, or personnel. It sounds like a home rehearsal, and probably dates from the 1970s. It has not been previously issued in any format.

Feedback Moves kicks off 2023 with a new record by @xcrswx and Lolina. @xcrswx are Crystabel Riley (drum-/human-skin) and Seymour Wright (saxophone), they released ‘Call Time/Hard Out’ on Feedback Moves in 2020. Lolina is an electronic and digital musician, who has previously released music as Inga Copeland and was a member of the band Hype Williams. Their collaborative relationship stems back to 2020. Lolina invited @xcrswx to contribute new work to a radio residency on NTS. They made 3 pieces played across 3 episodes. After these were broadcast, further ideas were exchanged which led to a collaborative audio-visual piece, streamed on Cafe Oto’s website in February 2021. They also performed as a trio live at Café OTO in 2022. The artists now present a split 10” vinyl. @xcrswx weave the above-mentioned pieces into a 10 minute piece titled ‘fixes’. The duo strip their sound to bare components. Beginning with the sound of fireworks, the pair then work through stuttered snare shots and warbled, interplaying saxophone. Lolina presents ‘fm’; some of her strangest and most subtle work to date. Echoing and furthering the abstract turntablism found on previous records ‘Who Is Experimental Music?’ and ‘Fast Fashion’. We hear found sounds, close and distant, rhythmically gathered and dissolved in a swirl of dub tone and timbre. Tracks have had early play on NTS Radio, Clydebuilt Radio and are expected to be played on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Late Junction’ and ‘Freeness’ show’s.

Building on the themes of her most recent album, `Medieval Femme', Fatima Al Qadiri's newest release sees her pairing up with fellow Kuwaiti vocalist Gumar. The EP - also titled `Gumar', Arabic for "moon" - is an homage to a style of lamentation singing that both Fatima and Gumar grew up with and were heavily influenced by, and for which the latter received formal training as a teenager. On these four short songs, Fatima provides a minimal counterpoint to Gumar's elegant vocals, a coalescence that powerfully and sympathetically complements and extends with cosmic, almost elemental depth. Serious and mournful in tone, the record ruminates on the subject of unrequited love, arguably the most common theme in Arabic music past and present. The cover is an original artwork by Kuwaiti artist Khalid al Gharaballi, Fatima's bestie and long-time collaborator.
