Panta Rhei - Leben
Panta Rhei
Leben
LP | 2018 | EU | Original (Black Pearl)
25,99 €*
Release:2018 / EU – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
The most oustanding DDR / East Germany / GDR progressive Rock, Soul, Jazz, Funk masterpiece-album, from the early 70´s era........some couldn´t imagine, that this lost material is really existing. The 1st album of Panta Rhei, that has been released on Amiga Records in the GDR communist era and has been re-released on ACME Records in 2012, has already reached a cult-status between music-lovers worldwide, because of it´s very own progressive tone. The more surprising it is, that these recordings were sleeping for nearly 45 years, hidden from the day of light. This album shows the high quality musical level of the East German & especially of the East-Berlin music-scenery, and the understanding and knowledge to be able to fuse rock, jazz, soul and funk music in it´s very own, playful, progressive & psychedlic way, with very deep & longing vocals, that you as the listener feel touched and affected in your soul. This wonderful Album of the supergroup PANTA RHEI on Black Pearl Records reflects an conglomerate of the musical works that the band recorded between 1972-1974. Among those tunes like "Prometheus" and "Hört", which where high up at the radio charts at DT64, are two very outstanding & jazzy student music composition-works for the university called "Amygelius" & "Shigu". In the early 70´s former East-German music-scene, every band was trying to get radio-plays to promote their music and become more famous - especially when you were one of the these more progressive jazzrock combos - but only a very few of these very talented music-groups were invited to the recording-studios of the GDR radio stations. But PANTA RHEI became already then quite famous because of numerous live-gigs and quite a big bunch of fans, that even lyricist-writers like Jens Gerlach & Joachim Krause were interested to cooperate and to work with the band. This cooperation was very important next to the band´s instrumental work, to express their musical output in a much more sophisticated way, followed by more airplays and the offer by the state label Amiga to release an LP album, to be recorded in the famous "Studio B" in Berlin´s Brunnenstrasse 154. But sadly most of these recorded tunes got no space at the vinyl publishing stage in those days, except of some 7inches-releases from the DT64 youth radio itself. After this disappointment the band got smaller, when Vroni Fischer & some brass-members left the band in early ´74, and it was a noticeable and other spirit amongst the group. As the last recordings of Panta Rhei in 1974 found no appeal by the musical directors of the record company and the Amiga editors decided not to feature this progressive rockjazz music any longer on the socialistic music culture, the band decided to disband. Shortly after that, some members decided to form a new group with a completly new sound and concept. The proposal of the early member Uli Pexa pushed through and another very famous east german band saw the light of the world, KARAT. The Black Pearl is more than proud to present this forgotten musical pearl to the progressive Jazz, Soul, Funk community & music lovers worldwide !

Die Kakerlake. Sie überlebt sie alle. Die Dinosaurier. Die Mammuts. Die Chinesischen Flussdelfine. DieMenschen.

2LP | 1993 | US | Reissue (Modern Classics)

Release:1993 / US – Reissue
Genre:Hip Hop
This is the blue & lavender (formerly exclusive to LITA) colored edition of this classic. First vinyl reissue. Expanded as a double LP for improved sound. Deep liner notes by Larry Mizell Jr. interviewing Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler Lyrics included for the first time 2xLP housed in a deluxe wide spine jacket with booklet and inner sleeves. At a time when hip-hop was determined to snap your neck, a young, hip trio from Brooklyn (by way of Seattle, Philly, and Brazil) conspired on an uncommonly smooth new sound and freaky way of speak, a titanically chill expression of Black bohemia loaded with jazz idiom and a subversive Marxist bent—and pushed it worldwide via an undeniable crossover hit.Digable Planets’ 1993 debut, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), unexpected to all involved, produced a massive radio hit in “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)”, which won the 1994 Grammy for Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group. Unduly lumped into an “alternative rap” subgenre they chafed at, the Dig Plans were dismissed by some as one-hit wonders, coming out of nowhere; but the Digable Planets concept, and what became Reachin’, had been in the works for close to five years, as group leader Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler wrote music and soaked up game in multiple cities, navigating the industry of hip-hop’s golden age.In the end, Butler, Mary Anne “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira, and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving came together to create a seamlessly articulated vision of urbane hiphop cool with an uncommonly literary bent that subtly pushed the hip-hop genre’s frames of reference and added breadth to rap music’s burgeoning political philosophy. Drawing on inspiration from Butler’s jazzbo father, the Black Panthers, Jose Luis-Borges, the Last Poets, and Jimi Hendrix, Reachin’ posited a theory of “universal beats”, narrated by three unearthly MC’s that had “split to Earth to resurrect the funk”, assuming curious, arthropodic aliases—a nod to the natural collective action of the insect world. In just four years the crew would record two beloved and ambitious LPs before disbanding.Out of print on wax domestically since 1993, Reachin’ captures one of the last gasps of rap music’s jazzy, upbeat adolescence in the early 90’s—those warm, blissed-out grooves every bit as slick as when they were laid way back when. Put this on, roll up with your crew and bug out again with the insect tribe.

The second and, as later would turn out, also the last release in Heinrich Tillack's critically acclaimed Tick Trax-series. The first Tick Trax-release by this talented producer from Braunschweig (Germany) was released as Volume 1 on U-TRAX in 1994 (cat. no.: 13 UTR SYS 1). It was a very successful record, however a bit too 'rough' for U-TRAX. Therefore, Volume II is launched on the U-TRAX sublabel Phoq U Phonogrammen, that has a more raw approach to techno, acid and electro.

Freamon is a denizen of the modern world, allegedly hailing from NY, according to some, not relevant, says he. What matters is the music – finely honed and carefully crafted dancefloor gems, served up with love the way they used to be, the way they ought to be.The Hot Damn! EP is his second release on the mysterious Turbocapitalism label, after 2016's Black Grid EP. This time, he has decided to shine a spine-tingling light on our souls. He wants you to raise your hands and put them together in an overdose of holy joy on this unashamedly celebratory slab of sweet gospel grooving. Can you feel the spirit? One listen to 'No More Crying' will settle any doubts on the subject. It's gospel-funk. Or gospel-not-gospel, which is like a million samples taken from every soul record you never heard, seamlessly stitched together as if created fresh today, with one idea – to meld together into one big explosion of spine-tingling dance floor joy!The title track takes things down a notch with a heavy kick drum shuffle – stripped back analogue house, making for an intoxicating, dense brew of sounds, feelings and ideas. Fierce, pulsating free jazz sounds, snaking around that deliciously tense, bustling bottom end, creating an infectious groove that is fresh, different and most of all, impossible to resist.Meanwhile, Madrid's DJF and Damian Schwartz do what they do best: they take that thing straight to the centre of Detroit, let it adjust to the new environment and then freely cruise the boulevards at night.

The track will appeal to those with Beck, Robyn Hitchcock and JJ Cale in their record collections.Continuing the theme, the flipside Ride to the Beyond is a cinematic, instrumental interpretation of the stockman's last ride, Moody keys and bass set the backdrop with reverb drenched synths strings soaring through, bringing to mind classic synth-led Australian film soundtracks of the '80s.

Another sure shot double sider out the Now-Again catalogue, until now both tracks were album only and both pure club killers. I smashed these back in the day; I remember listening to it from Jazzman Geralds collection and was blown away. I went right out and found the LPs which took a little time even then when there were fewer people after them. A couple of years after that 'Kashmere' was dropped on funky 16 corners comp Egon put together, and the cat was out the bag. Anyway back to the music, for those who don't know, Conrad O. Johnson of Kashmere High School, Houston Texas, created the Kashmere Stage Band turning it into one of the most fierce unbeatable high school bands in the national championships, the recordings here are my two favorites out of many. Don't miss out on the 2011 Documentary Thunder Soul which reunites the band with Conrad O. Johnson over 30 years down the line.

If you thought you heard it all get ready for the Star Shepherd! Legowelt teams up with The Hague's misfit consortium Baglover and presents 11 songs made with the self build Star Shepherd synthesiser. From sing-a-long existentialist exotica to power-noise ambient to wooly hypnotic saturated melodies - embrace this new dawn in lo-fi counter culture synthesis and wash your virtues away! ''Enter the STAR SHEPHERD a synth I build/bent/hacked/modified from old guitar pedals, FX and EQ boxes, a small AM radio and a 1981 Casio 403 keyboard. The oscillator section is made out of Pitchshifter/Harmonizers/Sub Octavers and a graphic EQ pedal to create complex harmonic tones - transmorphed from the simple keyboard sounds fed by the Casio. The sound then goes through a bunch of circuitbend analog delays, reverbs, Tremolos & vibratos (figuring as makeshift LFO sources) and Wahwah pedals as filters. The AM radio is figuring as an adventerous random noise source. There is also a very simple keyboard style 'sequencer' made from a looper pedal. The case is made out of cheap plywood and everything is held together with screws, glue and tape. It is very noisey, crackley and sometimes starts doing its won thing - like some sentient synthesizer-being that is a;ive. This makes it quite an undaunted experience'

As Rangers, Joe Knight has been producing lo-fi musical introspection for nearly a decade. His project emerged with the burgeoning hypnagogic pop movement of the early 2000s, a nostalgic glimpse back into the broken dream of suburban America through the analogue haze of old school recording formats and tape hiss, cut and paste scraps of 1980s pop and folk, psychedelia and progressive rock delivered via the sonic haze of late-night radio transmissions..." Their first release since the widely-loved "serious dreams" on Eiderdown Records, "Alt" features a variety of new sounds not previously heard on the band's recordings. Title track "Alt" is a straight-up motorik krautrock blazer, managing to slowly build momentum and spirit with each passing minute. EP opener "Low On Sleep" is an entirely new arrangement and recording; the updated version begins as wide-angle krautpop that morphs into a high-dream psychedelic guitar jam; confidently stomping along. Instrumental "Paolo and Francesca" blends tropical organs into 90s alternative stoner rock, easily demonstrating that somesurprises have much more in store than any of us would have previously guessed.

''Orbital'' washes yet more rain over a muted sax pad, and in the watery ''Journey Into The Unknown'' you can hear the diluted influence of Vangelis's incidental music for Blade Runner. Alienated and nostalgic, these instrumentals would work as an alternative soundtrack to the video game Kentucky Route Zero, with its sunset colours, stark, mid-century petrol stations and futurised Edward Hopper vistas, and endless miles of road for the solo driver, looking for clues in an uncanny world". - The Wire Magazine (Issue 417)

New Age/Old Wave Präferenzen.

LMYE first came to light in 2016 on Funkineven's Apron imprint with the LMYE EP, which quickly became a regular fixture at the London label's infamous parties and bbqs as well as with house DJs worldwide. Since then the pair have been relatively quiet, only appearing once on record, with a release for Bristol's Idle Hands in 2016. The paucity of their output though belies a busy production schedule behind the scenes. Tracks from those sessions have surfaced occasionally in the sets of DJs like Shanti Celeste and Ben UFO but they have never seen the light of day on a full release until now. As you would expect from their first releases, the self-titled LP treads a line between classic house and UK garage with a nod here and there to boogie and Latin freestyle, genres which have inspired their production techniques.

Basement Freaks serves up a classic funk instrumentation version of his own jam 'White Hot' which features the sizzling vocals of Ms. Kylie Auldist (The Bamboos, Cookin' On 3 Burners) over a jumping groove. He's taken it back to the old school and managed to achieve the seemingly impossible of improving on his already impeccable music. Over on the flip he's taken the Smoove & Turrell frontman's sweet and soulful vocals of the track 'Won't Get Fooled Again' and revised it into a barnstorming electro funk joint. It's not the first time these two have come together musically and whenever they do its always-on-point.

A soundtrack for gutted metropolises, virtual sanctuaries and utopian enclaves, 'Sentience & Sapience' is a seamless, psychedelic journey through possible near futures in the age of Artificial Intelligence. Its overlapping arrangements alternately evoke glitteringdigital realms and bleak, decrepit landscapes populated by ghostly natives drifting in fractured and multiplying realities. Eastern drones, processed guitars and field recordingsare warped, dubbed to cassette and re-sampled again. Meditative gongs and bells punctuate the mix, as human-sounding voices drift in and out intoning synthetic chants.Digital and analog textures dissolve into a continuum, suggestive of blurred and vanishing boundaries between the natural and the artificial; the real and the simulated; the evolved and the designed....

Reinier van Houdt returns to Hallow Ground with an album based on the unfinished gothic tale Igitur - a collection of texts that eventually was abandoned by itsauthor Stéphane Mallarmé in 1869. Connecting with Mallarmé's obsessions about chance and destiny, Igitur Carbon Copies is the fragmentation of all the rootsthat ran under its predecessor Paths Of The Errant Gaze and brings these to a provisional close: guided by David Tibet's voice reading the reworked text wedescend through spheres of deserted anthems, disembodied voices, morse signals, crank calls, corroded tapes, radio statics, stones, while doing counting games. Here the acoustical spaces are manifold, blended or shifted in a heartbeat, where far and near, up and down are relative, where Riemann's god is pointless and angels areenjoying their space. Here perception is a vice that constantly hallucinates realities.Reinier van Houdt has built himself an unusual repertoire that consistently resulted from personal quests; from composing with non-musical sources, fromcollaborations with composers & musicians, from research in archives or from unorthodox studies of classical music. He collaborated with artists like Francisco López, Maria de Alvear, Robert Ashley, Luc Ferrari, Annea Lockwood, Alvin Curran, John Cage, Christian Marclay, Walter Marchetti, Charlemagne Palestine and joined the legendary outsider-collective Current 93 in 2012.

Originally issued by Ascetic House as a small limited-run cassette release, now be available on vinyl and digital formats by the Swiss imprint, Hallow Ground. The nostalgiathat informs "Gloryland" is PLYXY's longing for his cultural-geographic roots while feeling adrift in an alien environment. Born in Dnepropetrovsk, then the rocket-making capital of the USSR, Knopov immigrated to New York City as a child in 1989. In "Gloryland," he dives deep into his uneasy childhood memories and their warpedreflections. PLYXY marks the unreliability of his recollections by making it heard - theanthemic qualities of the five pieces are coated in an opaque layer of dream-like textures. From the elegiac opener, "It Will Be Beautiful," to the blaring rhythmic noise of "March of Youth," the greyscale picture painted by "Gloryland" becomes more and more refinedbelow the surface. PLYXY's search for a past is, however, less a sentimental journey, and more a radical confrontation with the politics of memory and the materials that serve asmnemonic devices. "Gloryland" draws on field recordings from Knopov's adopted hometown New York and Soviet films as well as performances from his collection ofanalog and digital keyboards, with the results filtered and re-textured through the producer's modular synthesizer setup acting as the final editorial layer in the creativeprocess. The result is lush and warm throughout, but also demure and distant.

Alan Hawkshaw (piano/Hammond) and Shadow’s drummer Brian Bennett are responsible for some of the slickest, funkiest and most sought-after library records ever made in the UK, particularly ones recorded on the legendary KPM label. Their work has now become the go-to place for sampling in music today. Artists such as Dilla, Nas, and the xx, right through to the billion selling Kanye & Drake have taken Hawkshaw’s and Bennett’s immaculate beat-driven soundscapes for their own usage.Their new album, in full, iconic KPM cover is a return to the laidback jazz-funk that helped Alan and Brian demonstrate their library chops. The album is classic Hawkshaw/Bennett. It swings, it grooves, moves and thrills with a flair these two have perfected over years. Standout tracks such as "Hole In One", "In The Clouds", "Interchange", "Oasis", "On The Nile" and "Corcovado" are no mere excursions in nostalgia, for they carry lots of deft studio work that many a producer would give their right arm for. Hawkshaw’s arrangements allow the drums, guitar, bass, strings, Hammond, flute and brass to swirl elegantly around the 12 original tracks; a masterclass in recording.Cut by Pete Norman, housed in a beautifully designed Richard Robinson sleeve and pressed at 180g by Record Industry in Holland, this release has been afforded the care and attention it rightly deserves. Essential.

Released in the same year as Synthesis over on KPM, 1974’s Synthesizer and Percussion is its essential companion piece. “This record features the many distinctive sounds of the ARP Synthesizer plus percussion in various moods and tempos” is the even more underwhelming than usual library record sales pitch for Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett’s second collection of what is basically minimal G-funk, with overtones of primitive acid house. This is ridiculously good. This is one of Hawkshaw and Bennett’s wilder joints and aeons ahead of its time. Bennett’s tough drums provide the underpinnings for the prominent bass, keys and bubbling synths high up in the mix, alongside Hawkshaw’s deranged clavinet-funk-rock. There are heavenly break loops galore.Opener "Mon Amour" is ultra-smooth funk, all inter-weaving melodic lines whilst the seminal "Oddball" is an incredible hard electro strut with a knocking break. "Mile High Swinger" is a tranquil Spaghetti Western whistling theme over double tempo rhythmic movement and the pulsating "Auto Pilot" has a percussive groove elevated by electric piano and synthesizer. Check "Driving Force”, “Home Run” and "Pacesetter" for electroid prog-funk dripped in acid squelch. All five final tracks are beatless synth workouts, because they can.As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Synthesizer and Percussion comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity.

James Clarke’s Mystery Movie was released in 1974 as “modern, small group compositions in various moods. Ideally suited to the new Americanised style of T.V. and cinema film where music is used to create the mood and carry the action”.So this collection covers a lot of bases, but it does so brilliantly and has absolutely no right to be such a fantastic listen from start to finish.Mystery Movie is best known for the slick drum breaks underpinning the top-notch jazz-funk chase theme “Car Patrol”, the fuzz riffing and ARP soloing of “The Heavies” and the slow-mo strut of “Mystery Moll”. “Study In Fear” and “Empty Streets” are horror soundtrack fodder of the finest sort. However, it’s the understated, plaintive pieces that we find the most rewarding. Ambient feels and strung-out fried-folk treats, full of cyclical naïve melodies. Music that evokes the ‘downlifting’ Ronnie Lane and Ron Wood instrumentals from their great Mahoney’s Last Stand LP, as well as the beautiful soundtrack work of Jack Nitzsche and Ry Cooder. You might also recognise “Waiting Game” from being sampled by melodic downbeat masters Express Rising.Check “Relaxed Theme”, “Quiet Girl”, “Routine Procedure” and “Quietness Sustained” for a melodic, melancholic set, with the last three performed on just acoustic guitar and harp. Gorgeous work.As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Mystery Movie comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. Veteran library musician Alan Parker recorded with session vocalist Madeline Bell for his Themes International Music label and the result was 1976’s The Voice of Soul. The sensational uptempo dancer “That’s What Friends Are For” is probably the most well known track on the record, and is a big hit on the rare groove scene, but it is by no means an anomaly. The Voice of Soul is essentially a perfect, sophisticated soul album with heaps of swagger and sass from beginning to end. Its once generic-sounding title is now deservedly definitive. And the whole LP oozes sex. It oozes sex so much that it could have soundtracked a period porn film. Indeed, parts of it did. “Love Is All” and “You’ve Got What It Takes” both featured on the infamously banned Pretty Peaches from the same year.As is usual with library records, The Voice of Soul was hard to get even when it was first released. It’s next to impossible now. So here’s your opportunity to own what is in our opinion one of the finest rare soul LPs of the late 70s, and a superb example of Madeline Bell’s superlative vocal talents. But that’s not the whole story. As well as pitching the record as “a varied selection of modern female vocal features which are equally suitable for background or radio programme usage”, the original release notes go on to explain that “the corresponding backing tracks are issued on TIM 1022 The Sound of Soul. Therefore it is possible to edit from vocal to instrumental version and vica versa where commentary or scene changes occur.”So yes, all of the backing tracks from The Voice of Soul were released as The Sound of Soul, and we couldn’t re-issue one without re-issuing the other. As with all ten re-issues, the audio for The Voice of Soul comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. When Alan Parker recorded the killer library soul-funk LP The Voice of Soul with session vocalist Madeline Bell in 1976, some bright spark at Themes decided to also release all of the backing tracks as a separate, and equally innocuously title LP called The Sound of Soul. Thank goodness for bright sparks.Released as a collection of “unobtrusive musical backings in various rhythmic styles”, the LP’s original description dryly explains “these tracks have been issued without melody and are therefore particularly suitable for use behind commentary. Female vocal versions of these tracks are issued on TIM 1021 The Voice Of Soul and it is possible to edit from vocal version to instrumental version or vica versa where commentary or scene changes occur”.Madeline Bell was backed by The Rhythm Section, who were for all intents and purposes the Themes International Music house band. So what we end up with here is entire album of instrumental work-outs by a band comprised of the formidable talents of Alan Hawkshaw on keyboards, Alan Parker on guitars, Barry Morgan on drums, Les Hurdle on bass guitar and Frank Ricotti on percussion.Without Bell’s vocals these backing tracks are given all the room they need to breathe. Each one more than stands up on its own.The Sound of Soul is a real diggers’ delight and, unsurprisingly, a must-have counterpart to The Voice of Soul.As with all ten re-issues, the audio for The Sound of Soul comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. First ever release for this previously unknown late ‘60s/ early ‘70s acetate, rescued from a thrift store in Chicago. Damaged heavy blooz-psych in the vein of Blue Cheer, Majic Ship, Mount Rushmore, Houston Fearless, Apryl Fool, Sweet Slag, Mutzie, Aum, Screw, or a wasted teenage Canned Heat. In these digital and interconnected times, it’s very rare to find an album from the 60s-70s which hasn’t been documented or “discovered” yet. That’s the case with a mysterious demo LP titled “A Very Snug Joiner” by a band called Mad Timothy. In words of Steve Krakow (of Plastic Crimewave / Galactic Zoo): “A friend of mine found this no-jacket LP at a thrift shop, and there is ZERO information on them--no one knows anything and I've spoken to many collectors. Very cool sludgy Blue Cheer/Majic Ship/Mount Rushmore kind of vibe--with a few folkier tracks---it’s all pretty charmingly primitive-- I think people would want to hear this!”Even knowing that our efforts to track down the band were fruitless, we thought that this rarity deserved to be shared with the world, so we at Out-Sider / Guerssen in collaboration with Steve’s Galactic Archive imprint, are doing a vinyl edition of the Mad Timothy demo album, hoping that any of the band members will see it and contact us…

After releasing the monumental Chill Out album under Andreas' Mokira moniker, we took a rather different approach this time, opting for the White Label. Even though the title 'Endor' has nothing to do with the Ewok-inhabited Forest Moon in the Star Wars saga, it's still a decisively green and verdant track, filled with all the sounds of a dense forest. 'Trico' is the quiet lake deep within this forest; a serene spot inhabited with dragonflies, great white pelicans and slinky salamanders that curiously look a bit like Richie Hawtin during his Moby era. We simply love this place and hope that you will too.

The “vivid contemporary sounds for a fresh visual image” make up the now canonised Synthesis from Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett. These two greats go deeper than usual on this collection, and the end result is a synth concept record of sorts. Released in 1974, it’s an essential companion piece to their Synthesizer and Percussion LP, released on Themes International Music in the same year.Like most of our favourite library records, Synthesis has that gloriously funky, “weird electronic music” vibe without ever being inaccessible. With the awesome ARP Odyssey at the fore, Hawkshaw and Bennett have created a blissed-out soundscape that, whilst laid back in all the right places, somehow remains heavy on the funk. It’s a sort of throbbing, proto-G Funk sound and you can find it on many of these low-lit basement workouts.Take the ice-cool “Alto Glide”. It’s a sunset-funk highlight with an electro-flute refrain that conjures those dreamier Dre / DJ Quick instrumentals from ’91 to ’92. Stereolab, Koushik (again) and all those Ghost Box artists were clearly listening very closely in the years since. The equally relaxed “Mermaid” glides effortlessly with soft, shimmering piano, understated percussion and kaleidoscopic synths. It’s a really beautiful piece. With these two soft-focus closing tracks allowing the LP to float away over the horizon, the preceding ten tracks have a more insistent, neck-snapping rhythm section to back the synth overload. Highlights include the head-nod funk of “Getting It Together” and the synth break in “The Executive”, which informed classic video game soundtracks. For once Be With really is stuck for words to describe just how good this record is. Best just to listen. As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Synthesis comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. Piano Viberations’ “small group jazz featuring piano and vibes with rhythm” makes for a gorgeous Francis Coppieters showcase, surely one of Belgium’s best-kept musical secrets. Released in 1975, and arguably the most low-key of the KPM and Themes records we’re re-issuing, this is easily our current favourite.“The Open Highway” is the appropriately-named opener, and immediately demonstrates Coppieters’ dexterous interplay between piano and vibes in assured, joyous fashion. The shuffling bossa of “Sales Notes” is a jaw-dropper, well-mined by samplers with impeccable taste. The mellow head-nod drum-break that is “Funky Chimes” brilliantly demonstrates Coppieters’ quiet majestic side with its slow-motion funk rhythm with beautifully reflective notes throughout. The upbeat and joyful “Cross Talk” closes out side A. Vibes and piano are definitely at the heart of the arrangement here. The quick cut movement of “Piano In Transit” is another gem, driven principally by piano but those vibes along for more than just the ride. On a more gentle, elegiac note, “To Shearing With Love” is a warm, slow, romantic piece in the style of George Shearing. It’s plaintive and sublime.Piano Viberations is one of those rare library records the original description of which makes as much sense now as it did when it was first released. Piano and vibes with rhythm indeed. As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Piano Viberations comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. The two sides of 1973’s Big Business / Wind of Change are mainly the work of the great Keith Mansfield but there’s a killer cameo each from Alan Hawkshaw and David Snell to help deliver “a thematic suite, diverse in mood, applicable to dramatic and environmental situations”. A Be With favourite and truly one for the heads. The Big Business of side A is all the work of Keith Mansfield. It’s heavy on the suspense and features the vital “Hot Property”, an insistent groove so good that Madlib sampled it to lace the ace “Long Awaited” by Lootpack with Dilated Peoples.“Sleeping Giant 1” is a more fleshed out version of the equally-dazzling “Fatal Error”, evoking the orchestral magic of David Axelrod. Indeed, it conjures images of Diamond D falling over himself in the early-to-mid 90s to loop its intoxicatingly eerie soundscape. Complete with guitar fills that recall Paris, Texas-era Ry Cooder, you need this record for this piece alone. The horn-and-flute-led "Tycoon" is a head-nodder and "Power Complex" has some fantastic percussion. Other highlights include the breezy glide of “Whistle Stop Tour” and its sister groove “Clean Air.”Over on Side B is the more expansive Wind Of Change, which includes the David Snell and the Alan Hawkshaw contributions. But these ain’t no filler. Snell’s shuffling “International Flight” sounds like a smooth Dorothy Ashby track tossed from the heavens. Hawkshaw’s “Road And Rail” is about as luxurious and strung-out as the great man gets and it might just be the highlight of this whole set.Not to be outdone, if Mansfield’s “Balance Of Power” doesn’t make you feel like king of the world then you must be playing it wrong. Oh, and did we mention “World In Action”?!As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Big Business / Wind of Change comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity.

Hot Wax is an assured KPM masterclass from a dream team line-up of Brian Bennett, Alan Hawkshaw and John Fiddy. Here we’re treated to what happens when all three decide to explore “the latest trends in production music”. The latest as of 1976, of course.John Fiddy’s numbers are sumptuous, string-led and light. Floaty soft-psych underpinned by a solid groove, particularly on “Taste For Living” and "Fresh Start". If you're into Koushik and those early Manitoba/Caribou records - and you should be - you’ll appreciate these. For us, the Bennett and Bennett/Hawkshaw stuff is on another level. “Capitol City” oscillates between driving funk and downbeat sentiment. “Name Of The Game” is tough, smokin’ funk, famously sampled in 2007 by Madlib for Percee P’s “Who With Me”. “Bop On The Rocks” knocks hard and “Full Throttle” features a guitar solo with some of the nastiest, about-to-explode fuzz you’re ever likely to hear.As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Hot Wax comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity.

Released in 1976, Distinctive Themes / Race To Achievement is legendary arranger Nick Ingman exploring the two distinct ideas of “impressive themes varying in style from ‘Basie to Elgar’” and “a study in the pressure and rewards of achievement”.Distinctive Themes is a veritable indulgence of variously-tempoed, full orchestra, big band workouts, from relaxed swing to more propulsive themes. The progressively building “Expanding Markets” is a true highlight, with its rolling pianos, contemplative electric guitar solos and moody horns over skipping beats. The dramatic “Against The Odds” is another stand-out.Race To Achievement is all rugged funk with stabbing chords and strutting horns and it’s probably our favourite side. Of course we have to acknowledge the fantastic “Tense Preparation”, sampled by Prince Paul and Dan The Automator for Handsome Boy Modeling School’s seminal “Magnetizing” with Del Tha Funky Homosapien. But the whole side’s range from tense underscores to fast and punchy chase themes makes this is a gem of the KPM catalogue. As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Distinctive Themes / Race To Achievement comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. Voices In Harmony was released in 1973 as “a selection of contemporary pop titles featuring voices, brass and rhythm”. We choose to describe this collection of works by Keith Mansfield and John Cameron as “a string-laced, harmony-drenched KPM classic”.From the bright, lilting harmonies of “Liquid Sunshine” to the melting flutes of “Loving Touch” and “Gentle Persuasion”, this is warm, effervescent soul music for dreamy, idyllic moods. The supreme “Husky Birdsong” is so, so smooth, with its unrelenting bossa bassline and warm keyboards. “Half Forgotten Daydreams” is a gorgeous wordless groove. As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Voices In Harmony comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. "I read a review once where a guy said they played this album every day at a cafe he worked for six months, and never got sick of it." So says Big Ross from the BirdNest Roys in the liner notes for the deluxe reissue of Superette's inimitable, standalone 1996 album Tiger. Emerging from the dissolution of Jean Paul SartreExperience in 1993, Dave Mulcahy and Greta Anderson found themselves in New York with a handful of song skeletons. Recruiting childhood friend Ben Howe back inAuckland, Superette was born. The band combined Mulcahy's signature soundbending guitar and melodic ear for a pop hook with Anderson's muscular drumming, triangulated by Howe's energising, sinewy bass and guitar lines. One of Flying Nun's mid-90s gems, this deluxe re-issue of Tiger features the album along with the band'sdebut EP, Rosepig, b-sides from the Touch Me and Killer Clown singles plus unreleased demos from the bands' never released, uncompleted second album - a rare delight for fans of the band's impeccably slender back catalogue. Produced with friend and collaborator Nick Roughan (Skeptics), who Mulcahy had worked with on JPSE's The Size of Food, Tiger was tracked and mixed in Auckland's York Street Studios on Auckland's Shortland Street. The studio permits clarity in engineering; Anderson's drums sound Albini-esque; guitars soar and chug, at times riding the knife edge of controlled chaos that Roughan has made his hallmark. From the grunge riffs of I Got It Clean to the soft melodic hooks of Bye Bye; from the slow, melancholic verses of Felo De Se to the overdriven anthemic rock drive of Saskatchewan, Tiger is unique in its deployment of binary functions; aesthetic and thematic. Quiet/loud; soft/ hard; smooth/jagged. As Big Ross notes of the band'sname itself, it's big/small. Super-ette.

As well as being the NW1 outpost of the venerable mental health charity, Mind In Camden is also the title of the first release from superlative London label Jolly Discs, which originally came out on tape in 2016, and now, finally, gets a 12” pressing. It's the solo project of label co-founder Guy Gormley (also one half of Special Occasion), the producer behind the majority of JD releases, and bears the unmistakeable hallmarks of his sound: playful and tactile and bright and exposed and more than a little bit blue. It’s dance music, albeit probably more suited to when you’re stuck on a bus daydreaming about dancing, rather than actually doing it. Dunno, haven’t heard it in a club - hopefully will now! Splitting the difference between scruffy but relatively hard-edged house (‘Gemini Tribe’) and lush, lonerish DIY electronics with (like all the JD stuff) a perfectly-judged twee quotient, it has a fluency and freeness that makes it feel almost like it was played live, but paradoxically there’s an attention to detail which speaks of long red-eyed days and nights down the studio wormhole. The whole thing culminates in the fathoms-deep but perfectly slouchy see-you-on-Monday 10-min house epic ‘Dream Frequency’, mixed by Dancer (Rory who does the label with Guy), one of those tracks that you know will still be working it’s melancholic magic on you two, five, thirty years down the line. Edition of 300 with picture sleeve.

Hyperion became a cult hit in the underground scene during the last two years. The combination of warm melodies, grooving bassline and loud breakbeat is spot on and proves to provide for a timeless feel. That's why the record became more and more sought after and is going for big money on cogs, if one pops up that is. Gerd had to go through 500+ DAT tapes to retrieve original masters of the 4 tracks off this second It's Thinking EP he produced with two high school friends, Dirk & Mark, in the early 90's. It took us a while to prepare this package but finally here it is: remastered and sounding better than ever!

The sleeve has a dent as you can see in the second picture of this great record. The Never Before Issued Soundtrack from Austrian Prog-Psych Masters Paternoster. Before releasing their lone self-titled debut album, one of the most rare rock records to be releasedin Europe in the 1970s, Paternoster provided the soundtrack for a film that could only have beenmade while the psychedelic movement was still in its first wave. The group’s first recordingspresented here are the soundtrack for Herbert Holba’s 1971 hippie sci-fi film Die Ersten Tage (TheFirst Days), screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, and interestingly played on AustrianTV in August of that year. The material issued here is the genesis of Paternoster and set the stage forthe release of one of the world’s great rock albums with their self-titled debut the following year. The music has been painstakingly transferred directly from master tapes, never before released inany form. The extensive, photo-filled booklet documents the history of the band, Holba’s film, andhow psychedelic rock and film collided in Vienna’s 70s underground. The package also includes a download card for WAV files with bonus tracks, including the band’sdemos for their masterpiece album, and the entire Die Ersten Tage film.

On 2007’s “Nostalgia,” a memorable track off Marco Polo’s album, Port Authority, chemistry between Polo and guest MC Masta Ace is easily heard and felt. What was a quick one-off collab was not only a reminder of Masta Ace’s timelessness, but it was also the impetus for a larger, more fleshed out concept between the Toronto beatsmith Polo and the legendary MC. The pair since formed a duo and the result is a powerfully evenhanded project, A Breukelen Story. In 2018 we find hip-hop’s storied journeyman, Masta Ace, at the helm of another sharp, tightly wrought project. He’s traversed hip-hop’s ever-changing landscape for nearly three decades, navigating different eras while expanding his already extensive catalogue. From his formative work with the legendary Juice Crew, to a bombastically renowned stint with Delicious Vinyl, it’s hard to find a more humble master of ceremony than Ace—even harder is finding another figure whose work is equally embraced on both coasts, East and West, as well as abroad. Despite amassing 7 solo albums, 5 collaborative projects and countless additional one-offs, Ace is still trying to show and prove, still moving the needle forward for himself, his fans, and his career. Says Ace: “My goal on A Breukelen Story was to do more lyrical stuff. I’ve done a lot of concept songs, and a lot of topical records, but I made a point to put a couple straight rhyming joints on here to remind dudes I can still do this.” “I met Masta Ace for the first time while interning at Cutting Room studios in Manhattan,” says Marco Polo, longtime Canadian producer whose exploration of samples and boom-bap aesthetics certainly suite his moniker. “Ace came in for a session in the studio years and I introduced myself and gave him a beat CD.” While Polo was a young intern on the rise, he quickly worked the situation to his advantage, eventually producing for giants he grew up admiring— Kool G Rap, Large Professor, Scarface, Sean Price, Black Thought, Talib Kweli, to name a few. Polo is not new to forming quality collabs with others in the art form, with notable stints on the aforementioned Port Authority as well as it’s follow up, PA2, and others like 2016’s work with young MC, A-F-R-O, fittingly titled A-F-R-O Polo. Yet out of Polo’s previous collaborative efforts, this one stands out and is a bit more special, according to Polo: “Ace does not like to write random songs, its usually conceptual and topical,” he says. “But we do have some straight spitting joints on A Breukelen Story which is what makes this album possibly the most diverse of all of my collaborative albums.” The random meeting and a beat CD resultantly birthed A Breukelen Story, a collaborative release between the venerable veteran and an incredibly detailed and prolific producer. 14 tracks with pronounced guests (Pharoahe Monch on “The Fight Song” for example) all strewn together through Ace’s signature skits and interludes that frame the music and while telling the story of Polo manifesting his vision of being an NY transplant via Toronto while pursuing his dream of being a renowned record producer. Other guests range from younger MCs like Marlon Craft to spry OGs like Lil Fame (of M.O.P.), to Smif ‘n’ Wessun, to Styles P (of the Lox) Polo’s pastiche style boom-bap is the drum-driven centerpiece that perfectly couches Masta Ace’s thoughtful stanzas and vivid storytelling for this effusive Brooklyn narrative. – David Ma

Overflowing with unbridled energy, you'd be forgiven for thinking On Top was the band'sdebut album, but the third record for the Sydney quartet sounds as vital and as exciting asever. Having spent years touring their incendiary live show around Australia and the world,Straight Arrows have honed their fresh, reverb-laden, fuzzed out, psychedelic punk sound intopointed perfection with On Top. From the frantic buzzsaw of "Nothing To Me", to the breakbeatgroove of "21st Century", to the tender outsider folk of "Dead Weight", to the mindmeltingpsych-out that is "Buried Again", this is the sound of a band that isn't short on ideasand isn't afraid to push the envelope of what people expect a Straight Arrows record to be."The first album is It's Happening, the second is Rising, so it only makes sense by this pointthat we'd eventually make it On Top!!" says Penglis. The Central Africa which Moo Latte only remembers from tales and music played by his Congo born father in mixture with the Scandinavian culture and mentality that he was absorbing for the last 6 years of living in Denmark and Iceland created plenty of abstract pictures and structures in producer’s head. Such a vision has been combined with a hiphop and jazz background of the musician and created a conceptual album in which the narrative is led by elements and musical motives that come from various African locations as well as the ones inspired by South American and Latin music. “Syd” contains sixteen related composition about music of the South.
