Early Band Of Holy Joy existed somewhere on the cut-up side of proto-industrial music, resting between Marc Stewart & Maffia, Sonic Youth, and Current 93, and proponents of a more romantic musical language - Virginia Astley, Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins among them - all artists whose work BPHJ's music sat comfortably alongside across on a stream of low-budget vinyl and cassette compilations after the start of the eighties. A great leap in polish led to a deal with Rough Trade and several early '90s albums which flirted with the mainstream, with BOHJ almost an odder, less obvious cousin to Dexys Midnight Runners. When these releases failed to take off as hoped, lost years followed on smaller labels and self-released projects, until the renewed urgency of the 2016 Brutalism Begins At Home EP and increasingly majestic albums on which saw leader Johny Brown's lyricism enter a new phase. The common thread through BOHJ's four decades of recordings is the foundational warmth and humanity of Brown's words. The band's earliest recordings seemed garnered from street-level observations of neighbourhood people and sights. By the time of near-hit "Tactless", their songs - whatever the underlying impulses may have been - had become immediate enough to overcome the mystery of a line like "Do you remember the swan that was shot in the park?" Over each of their last three albums - Funambulist We Love You, Neon Primitives and Dreams Take Flight - BOHJ has bettered itself, and may now have reached their apex, Fated Beautiful Mistakes. We live in a time of generally justifiable gloom and awkward uncertainty. So it may appear cavalier to claim this album sounds revelatory in that context, but Band Of Holy Joy's strengths rest largely in Johny Brown and the band's ability to capture a wider societal feeling. One listen to the escapist fantasy of "Our Flighty Season Under The Flighty Sun" and its slightly-haunted ending speaks volumes beyond most of what passes for music in 2023, and it's just one of many perfect moments on this album.

Sonic chaotic, tender terror. On New Stone, Lithuanian producer Kamile Rimkute a.k.a. Caline with C dazes and uplifts us with her reflective post-modern electronics. This album is a personal long-term project in the making, one of auditive self-expression, treading across themes such as adventure, love, discovery and grounding. The album is driven by Kamile's interest in futuristic boundary-crossing music and intersectional feminism, as well as her studies in Sonology. With an advanced skill for composition, sound synthesis and her knowledge on the totality of sound, she claimed the means of production, as New Stone is all produced, mixed and mastered by herself. New Stone was recorded in a period of two years that started in 2020 and incorporates highlights of her landmark livesets ever since. New Stone is full of concocted emotion that sustains and releases through her trademark of stark contrasts - triplet-driven, jolted yet angelic atmospheres - resulting in a tangible, body-driven sound. Interweaving her vocals near the final salvo, this album marks the end of a creative cycle and start of a next, allowing her personal touch to seep through her art more and more. Embarking from home ground, stepping on a new stone.

Soleil Tartare' is Dim Garden's debut album on Rotterdam's young label Yarrow Ballet. This five-track EP embodies both the depths of Hades' underworld and Helios' realm. The album is a worship of the metaphysical side of nature. The opening track, 'Cunning Morose' evokes incandescence and sun worship. Its propulsive 808 beat and lofty vocals conjure flamboyant pagan ceremonies. The instrumental track 'Golfinho do Rio' is a heroic ode to the infinite sea, combining driving rhythms with new-age-inspired synthesized sea creatures' cries, layered with mighty string melodies. It is followed by the grungy 'In Sorrow', where ghoulish and fiery rebel energy is summoned through ice cold drums, and haunting gothic vocals. The album sees the re-emergence of the blazing sun in the softer and melodic title-track 'Soleil Tartare'. 'Vo?tes et Cercueils' crowns the album with its epic and dramatically ascending polysynth sonic poem. With her seminal and genre-defying album, Dim Garden brings new and disruptive energy into the hinterlands of electronic music. Her work spawns a distinctive mix of raw electronics, minimal wave, noisy industrial and gothic ballads. Having previously released mostly on digital and cassette tape labels (Nightwind Records, Italo Moderni, Ophism, Hunger!, ClanDestine, tanzprocesz, ERR REC, Ernest D. Tapes etc), Dim Garden's debut vinyl, which collates a variety of influences, is sure to compel listeners with its poetry and awe-inspiring synthesis.

Hot on the heels of their second release, label founders Sem Marini and Mike Sharon put aside their "Ultra Knites" moniker and demonstrate their talents as solo artists for label's third release. The "Knite Grooves" series kicks off with Mike's track "People", skillfully crafted with Jazz influenced rhodes and lush pads underpinned by hard hitting kicks and basslines. A2 "Fields of Dreams" is a truly timeless track that really touches you, we can't put it into words here, it's far easier to just hit play on the preview above. Sem Marini steps up for the flipside. The B1 cut "Voltage" is well suited for peak time movement and brings a unique groove with expertly positioned stabs while the drum track is somewhat reminiscent of the the classic Amen break. B2 "Music Takes Me" is a deep rolling groove which rounds up the EP nicely.

Japanease veteran producer TAKECHA joining Holic Trax for the first time to make split EP with Label boss Tomoki Tamura. They are both from same region "kansai" of Japan which is the name of this EP.

Developer is back on Juxta Position’s Failsafe imprint once more with 4 fresh cuts of techno, displaying a deeper side to his unique take on the style. “Get this” is most reminiscent of the sound he is most known and loved for, with it’s booming drums and strange wavetable voices, but “Ethnic Identity” breaks away from more his usual template with it’s organic sounding loops and dramatic strings. Likewise, mood setter “Over Nepal”, lays down an intense vibe whilst ep closer “Zebra” pairs up a memorable melodic pattern with his more usual driving percussion. Developer once again displays his broad influences and unique production style, whilst pushing the sound of contemporary techno forward.

O'Girl aka Ellinor Jackson is back once again on Borft! Her debut left me wanting for more. Like label boss Villa Abo said 'Sometimes you just feel right about it'. Although this 4-tracker is her second record out there the music is fully matured house goodness. Stabs and chords builds up a funky groove on a solid beat foundation in Corners Couch. Proper sunset/sundown dance music. Snap Happy dives right into filtered loopy loops and voice samples. It takes its time so you can get snug and cosy and then unleashes a percussion party right at the end so you'll be smile-dancing and sipping fizzy in no time. Shoddy Shoes is a straight up club joint. Dark wobbly techno bass moves dubby stabs forward while a mysterious mist floats on top. Some strong clap action keeps everything moving from side to side! MicroCastle begins the fall season by welcoming Olaf Stuut to the label for his debut artist showcase. Based in Amsterdam, the Dutch producer has been a fixture of the electronic underground for over a decade. Uniquely transcendent, Olaf’s music is hugely anticipated by his fans and highly regarded by his contemporaries, leading him to remix some of electronic music’s most revered artists, namely Max Cooper, Minilogue and The Acid, while also landing him releases on the world’s trendiest records labels, most notably Connected Frontline, Engrave, Infectious (PIAS), Last Night On Earth and Atomnation, the latter of which operates as his primary home. Now following a remix for Christian Löffler’s Ki Records, Olaf makes his microCastle debut with ‘Coral Limbo’.

Marco Spaventi and MOS label head Aroy Dee link up for another of their intriguing collaborations. They have done so before on this label back in 2012, and their latest offers another vital mix of raw house and ambient. Opener 'The Way We Love' features typically rough, blistered drums and sci-fi synths, but this time with a heavenly vocal and uplifting chords up top that tug on your heart strings. An ambient reprise of the same track is a perfect excuse to kick back and get lost in your own thoughts. 'The Way We Move' then takes a long view, with far-gazing Detroit pads and mid tempo drums getting you deep into a dreamy groove that is wide open and expansive. Last of all, Marco remixes this one on his own and flips it into something that is even more melodic, with circling pads and a musical bassline all making for a beautiful piece of timeless house music.

On the second Trule release Al Wootton (AKA Deadboy) drops his first ever record under his own name. Traces of dub, UK garage and techno inform the forward leaning, club-focused sound. On Selah, Al creates a driving steppers rhythm shot through with dub manipulations and UK swing.

Sean Huber, best known as the drummer of the beloved & defunct band Modern Baseball, has been releasing music with his band Steady Hands since 2013. Back for the first time since 2018 with new album "Cheap Fiction," Huber pays homage to all of the deities you'd expect someone with a New Jersey birth certificate and a dog named Bruce to worship, with rollicking saxophone and piano over tales of hard-on-their-luck neighborhoods, and stadium-rock-ready guitar zaps over odes to the misrepresented people of Florida. He grapples with lapsed religion like so many with Irish names have done before him. And he fits in real nicely with the modern heroes of Philadelphia's punk scene, blending the best of heartland rock and straight-up punk with his own penchant for the tropical. Huber's lyrics tell stories of a very real world where people in power use it for evil, the people who need help don't get it, but the person at home makes life beautiful despite it all, and there are plenty of friends to commiserate with. He found inspiration in the world around him, including history and politics books. The album reflects his belief in balance and his ethos that all great comedy is based on truth.

If you've been wondering what it might sound like when two alt-banjo giants join hands & strings and sell their souls at the crossroads, 'Ponder Machine' is an essential listening experience. In August of 2022, Kramer parachuted into Asheville, North Carolina to record a mysterious LP of collaborative banjo studies by JD Pinkus & Tall Tall Trees. Pinkus is best known as the bassist who replaced Kramer following his exit from the Butthole Surfers (and his years with The Melvins), and Joyful Noise Recordings Artist, Tall Tall Trees (aka Mike Savino) is a stunningly talented multi-instrumentalist, known for his work with Kishi Bashi, along with his pioneering excursions into the world of his Banjotron 5000. Within hours of Kramer's arrival, things got entirely out of hand (in exactly the manner they had hoped), and the results are sure to re-write the way people see, hear and THINK about the banjo, 'Ponder Machine' proves in a thousand ways that the possibilities are limitless, and the extra 30 minutes you get when you download the digital-only tracks just hammers the point home. Think John Cage meets Bela Fleck meets Brian Eno. The banjo has never been chewed up and spit out so lovingly. JD Pinkus brought his mushrooms and effects pedals. Mike Savino brought his sourdough and his psychedelic street-smarts. Sweet dreams, y'all.
