The celebrated history of the Masqueraders has given us two of soul music’s most memorable recordings with “I Ain’t Got To Love Nobody Else” and “I’m Just An Average Guy”. Through the years they have left us many classic gems that are heavily sought after by collectors and some that have yet to be mined. However, if there was ever any doubt about the Masqueraders´ greatness, the previously unreleased “Make Me Think You Love Me” from 1972 puts that doubt to rest. After a stunning intro the group eases into those harmonies that captured our hearts back in day and remind us once again about the magic of that period of soul music. “When Trouble Calls” is a Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield composition from 1961 and the group´s version appeared originally on an impossible-to-find cassette published in 1993. Unlike the Ice Man’s version, the Masqueraders upgrade the song with their patented silky-smooth vocals. Thanks to the team at Soul4Real for digging up and presenting us with these two recordings.

In this unprecedented album, entirely conceived using only the legendary instrument Ondes Martenot, the composer Christine Ott tells a cosmic journey with cinematographic colours, which rubs shoulders with electronic stars and caresses incandescent planets. A sonic and sensual magma produced by Paul Régimbeau (Mondkopf) & Frédéric D. Oberland (Oiseaux-Tempête), radiant, as if weightless.

The future is in the past. Almost a century since their invention by Maurice Martenot in France at the beginning of the 1920s, the Ondes Martenot have shaken contemporary music by inviting the electronic and electrical fairies to the ball of – then acoustic – instruments of the repertoire. Remnants of a pivotal period in the discovery of new sound tools, little known to the general public unlike the theremin, the Ondes Martenot are nevertheless one of the very first monophonic and experimental synthesizers in history, combining electronics and mechanics with artistic lutherie making: an exceptional instrument offering its very rare players an infinite range of timbres, textures and sound research.
Consecrated by the avant-garde composers Olivier Messiaen, Edgard Varèse, André Jolivet, Tristan Murail, Giancito Scelsi or Bernard Parmegiani, the mysterious and sensitive vibrations of the Ondes Martenot have migrated throughout the 20th century in popular music (Léo Ferré, Brian Ferry, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Daft Punk...), as well as in the cinema where their palette of sounds that can be shaped to infinity and their often very expressive playing (close to the human voice or the cello) have bewitched science fiction and certain dreamlike dramas (Fantomas, Lawrence of Arabia, Ghostbusters, Mars Attacks!, Amélie, 35 Rhums, There Will Be Blood, Minute Bodies...). Present on numerous recordings of the classical/contemporary repertoire, having narrowly escaped oblivion at the death of their inventor in 1980, the Ondes Martenot had never before been used solo on a whole album of contemporary music.
Chimères (pour Ondes Martenot) was born out of the desire of NAHAL Recordings and Christine Ott (virtuoso ondist and multi-instrumentalist teaching at the Strasbourg Conservatory) to offer an unprecedented album, entirely conceived using only her Ondes Martenot. If Christine Ott has often accompanied other musicians on Ondes Martenot (Yann Tiersen, Tindersticks, Raphelson, Dominique A, Syd Matters, Oiseaux- Tempête, FOUDRE!...), it is the first time that she decides to place her strange instrument at the center of her compositions, entrusting the musical production to Paul Régimbeau (Mondkopf) and Frédéric D. Oberland (Oiseaux-Tempête) manipulating the original sound waves live via effect boxes and sonic modulations external to the instrument. A solo album made with several hands that plunges the precious matrix, via a current repertoire half composed/half improvised, in the prism of the last hundred years of experimental music, electronic culture and habitus to synthetic sounds.

Christine Ott's eight Chimeras are like snatches of distant dreams, whispers of ghosts, echoes of rustle and symphonies that once inhabited the instrument, seeming to have travelled through the ages without losing their power and relevance. The composer Christine Ott tells a cosmic journey with cinematographic colours, which rubs shoulders with electronic stars and caresses incandescent planets. A nebula of layers of waves superimposed and triturated by effects that make her songs sometimes robotic, sometimes celestial. A sonic and sensual magma, radiant, as if weightless.

The original chemigrams illustrating the cover have been made by contemporary artist Fanny Béguély by painting with chemicals on old photosensitive sheets of paper, while listening to the tracks on the record.

Composed and performed by Christine Ott on Ondes Martenot Dierstein // Effects and live processing by Frédéric D. Oberland & Paul Régimbeau // Recorded and mixed by Romain Poirier at Mer Noir, Paris, between Winter 2018 and Autumn 2019 // Edited, arranged and produced by Paul Régimbeau & Frédéric D. Oberland // Mastered by James Plotkin // Original chemigrams artwork by Fanny Béguély // Graphic design by Thibault Proux

Since the beginning of our Dtw adventure we have been working together with Greg Jata Illustrator who designed our logo and made some graphic works for us till to discover around a year ago, he also plays in a roots group: The Royal Horses! As a natural progression of our friendship and working cooperation we decided to try finalize together a couple of riddims they had ready! In the meantime, since around 2005/2006 we've been big fans of Keathus I Jah Dynasty (Milton Samuels) music, Red Hot have always been an hit in our selection. Since a few years we have gladly seen him joining the reggae community on Facebook , bringing on his own productions , sharing his love for Africa , Ethiopia and Rastafari...so we thought could have been a great idea to have him singing on a riddim we got from Greg....a dream coming true to be able work together with a veteran artist involved in some of the best tracks that ever came out of Jamaica. So it was, Keithus I is a nice & easy person, a Talented singer with a deep sensibility to this music and the lyrics and interpretation for the riddim we got from him...it's just perfect! We had the track finalized by Ian Prince Jamo Campbell who worked to Backing vocals and Roberto Sánchez at Lone Ark studios who took the whole raw idea and carved it to perfection on what you will hear impressed on the Dtws005 plastic! We still have a 2nd riddim by Royal Horses ,it's as good as this...and we are working to something special , so hold on! Much more to come out of Dtw stables!

Premisession’ pays homage to the pivotal but now defunct Minneapolis warehouse venue “Premises,” of which Craig Lambert aka Midnight Music Club founded, and where Kajunga hosted their rst ever all night party. The EP showcases MMC’s hardware uency with a lavish cruise through mesmerizing grooves and pronounced warmth. Calling Card creates a welcome invitation to the record with sensual synth lines, paired with the drive of undulating tom rhythms. A New Day evokes the feeling of an acid soirée. Rich emotion and improvisational elegance resonate throughout the track. Five A.M. starts the B-side off with spring-time air; blooming into a Sunday morning daydream. Private Guy seals the deal by providing a more moody take on A New Day, with melodies weaving through playful percussion. Midnight Music Club has been collecting records for over 40 years, sharing them passionately for nearly 30 and studying music production for 20. This live artist’s timeless yet distinctly old school sound is reminiscent of early Chicago and Detroit pioneers, with a blend of deep house and techno that is uniquely his own. He has released on Chicago’s Descendants of the Deep label, as well as Headphoniq and his own self titled outlet. His ‘Premisession’ EP is an ode to the pivotal but now defunct Minneapolis warehouse venue Premises, which he himself founded and which hosted Kajunga’s rst- ever all-night party.

Aktshun is an offspring of the Mothership Connection, a sound that oozes out of the hidden basement of Studio 54, made for the roller skate rink of the "Main Jaune" in Paris. Mini tennis shorts, a tight tank top and pointy nipples, sexy hi-fiving butt cheeks, furious hairdos and heavily colored eyelids hidden behind big sunglasses... It's the return of a frenetic Disco that gets down with Boogie Down Funk, a feverish Deep House caressing a wild P funk. It's the ambition of Marotti and Marrrtin, the duo behind this vast emergency plan to save the dancefloors, from Venice Beach to Shibuya. With this 4 tracks EP, the two friends will convince your grandparents to lock and pop, make your banker look like a drug dealer out of Miami Vice. Aktshun, duo comprised of Marotti (Dj, Deep House producer and owner of Meso records) and Marrrrtin (Dj, Hip Hop producer as well as Breakdance with the group Funky Bijou and manager of the Stereophonk label). Reunited by their common love for House, Disco and Boogie Down Funk, deliver a Nudisco House EP, with multiple influences. This first vinyl contains 4 tracks which presents a palette of influences, such as the track " Owned " with its jazzy sound presented by an acoustic bass line, B3 organ and the delicious flute of Antoine Laloux from The Selenites Band. On the second track, " Do the Jungle " we clearly feel the influence of Big Funk/P Funk with solid percussions, crazy synths and a nasty bassline... The B side " Somebody say ye " brings us in a mix between Disco and Detroit House channeling the like of Moodyman or Wajeed... Finally, the smoothest track "U know (baby)" features Rhodes chords, strings and a melodic bassline sending us straight back to New York House. Don't miss this one.

Japanese pianist Yumiko Morioka initially released Resonance, her first and only solo recording, on Akira Ito's ‘Green & Water’ imprint in 1987. Whilst by no means a commercial failure, the album was mostly found in the background of Japanese TV documentaries, maternity clinics and healing shops before drifting into relative obscurity. By 1994, Morioka had relocated to America and her solo music career had given way to the joys of starting a family and her new life in California. It was, and still is, a shock for her to learn that Resonance had gained the attention of a new audience outside of Japan through blog posts and YouTube album uploads. After hearing Resonance for the first time ourselves back in early 2017, we tried for months to track Morioka down about a reissue. This news reached her at a particularly trying time in her life following the devastating loss of her home in the 2017 California wildfires. Her home had recently been razed, destroying all of her possessions, musical equipment, scores and recordings. Morioka was lucky to escape with her life; her quick thinking neighbour raised the alarm in the middle of the night giving her just enough time to escape safely before then tragically watching her home burn to the ground. In the aftermath, Morioka returned to Japan in an attempt to rebuild her life. She found work writing music for commercial projects and pop acts before recently opening her own chocolate shop in the Jiyugaoka neighbourhood of Tokyo - back where it all began. ‘’Space and time moved at a different speed than now’’ – Yumiko Morioka A lifelong student of the piano, Morioka was born in Tokyo in 1956. A child prodigy, she took up the instrument under her mother’s tutelage at just three years old and by her teens she had won multiple piano scholarships. Her talent was so obvious that she was invited to train in America, eventually graduating from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a piano major during John Adams’ reign as head of composition. After graduation, Morioka returned to Japan but struggled to find her place musically, working mostly on commercial songwriting assignments. Frustrated, and at times embarrassed by her musical output, she turned to the works of Brian Eno and the surroundings of her coastal home in the Izu Peninsula south of Tokyo for inspiration. It was here that she began to work on the compositions that would eventually become Resonance. Recorded on a Bösendorfer grand piano, much of Resonance was made in an attempt to soothe her creative soul. Constructed from unwritten improvisations with additional instrumentation added later, Resonance explores the space between notes. As such, it's a record that feels open and inviting, permeated throughout with a sense of confident serenity. The sparse, delicately played notes are allowed to reverberate and echo through the spaces between themselves, giving each track a feeling of both grandeur and intimacy. Like the great pioneers of classical and ambient music, there's a timelessness to Resonance - a comforting, familiar feeling, as if these melodies have always existed. Resonance drew influence from the popular environmental music culture prevalent in Japan during the late 80s, but it was also heavily inspired by Western musicians such as the avant-garde Parisian composer Erik Satie. Listening today, it still feels fresh and pertinent; a warm, contemplative reflection of a travelled woman. Resonance has been lovingly remastered by Séance Centre's Brandon Hocura and given new artwork by Métron Records’ label head Jack Hardwicke.

Türküola proudly presents a brand new Cem Karaca album where most of the songs made their premieres inside this release. From the original masters of Türküola, we will be hearing Apaşlar, Ferdy Klein and even Dervişan era of Cem Karaca with English lyrics. As the opening track, we hear “Mutlaka Yavrum” which he recorded with Dervişan in 1975 which is really a political piece also with English lyrics. Karaca tells the stories of the children in refugee camps because of the Palestine and Israel conflict. The English versions of “Kendim Ettim Kendim Buldum”, “Emmioğlu”, “Muhtar” and “Baba” have the same playback with their Turkish versions but this time directly and faithfully transferred from their original masters. These tracks were recorded with Ferdy Klein Orchestra in 1970. The Turkish versions of these songs were previously released but the English ones were in the treasure box till now. “Tears”(Resimdeki Gözyaşları), “No No No” (Emrah 1970), “Why” (Oy Babo) and “Istanbul” (Istanbul’u Dinliyorum) are the recordings of Apaşlar with the support of Ferdy Klein Orchestra dated 1968 and the English versions were also released in the same era as two separate singles. In this album, we also hear instrumental tracks played by Apaşlar with the support of Ferdy Klein Orchestra namely “Memories of Marmara” (Emrah 1970) where vocal parts are replaced with strings, “Laila’s Dream” (Resimdeki Gözyaşalrı-Tears) where vocal parts are given with brass and solo sax, “Oy Bana Bana” where vocal parts are replaced with electric guitar and sax. These three songs were previously released in the LP of The Bosporus Sound Orchestra named “Laila’s Dream” which had been released by United Artists, Liberty, and Türkofon before. The Bosporus Sound Orchestra was, of course, Ferdy Klein’s pseudonym for his orchestra. Thanks to Türküola for making these legendary recordings meet its collectors and Anatolian Pop fans via faithfully transferred master recordings.

The three stepping workouts on the A use exemplary harmonies and sound design to convey a complex emotional tone, both ruminative and decisive. Flip things over and we are dropped straight into the middle of a peak-time floor, the driving energy of straight kick and bouncing bassline pushed ever further by swelling strings here or acid stabs there. It's a thrilling move, so come along for the ride. Early support from Fred P, Marco Zenker, Ciel and Anna Wall.

Fatal Morgana was formed in the ghetto’s of Amsterdam at the end of 1988 when Mr. Fact and E. Smidt started to experiment with their equipment and get released their first single “I Believe” on the Belgium label Antler-Subway (home of Klinik, Poesie Noire, A Split Second, The Overlords…). From that point things started to take off very fast. Their mutual ideas ended up in a new maxi “Attention” (club-charting in several countries) and the debut album “The Destructive Solution” in 1990. This album was composed in their own FM-Studio and showed another side of the band. Darker than before. You can find danceable EBM stuff together with some atmospheric and orchestral tracks. All songs contained their view on matters like politics, environment, oppression, etc.

Scientific Bulletin From The Safe Trip Institute, Amsterdam. Our latest communication to colleagues concerns an audio artefact – library reference code St019 – provided by our esteemed Japanese brothers Satoshi and Makoto. They unearthed it from their own archive of musical experimentations and laboratory tests, which have been ongoing since the 1990s. They have shared it so that the process of peer reviewing can begin in earnest. We have undertaken thorough testing in the Safe Trip Laboratory and offer the following observations: Colleagues in Japan provided us with sample product of the following audio artefact – file number St015 – believing that it may be relevant to the Safe Trip Institute’s ongoing research in this area of study. After rigorous testing and analysis, we would like to offer the following observations: By running each of the 10 pieces of music that make up the artefact through the Past Fire Particle Analyzer, we have ascertained that every single note, chord and aural element was created using the Cz-5000, an electronic instriment built by Japan’s Casio Corporation. One of our researchers discovered that if you assign a Pantone colour code to each different musical note featured on the artefact, all bar 734 of the 1,867 “spot” colours are present. By gathering these together on one screen, she discovered that most of the “musical colours” employed by Satoshi & Makoto were shades of purple, orange, red, green, yellow and pink. In laboratory tests, listeners were instinctively drawn to the following percussion-free compositions: ‘Crawl Up (St019-02)’, a combination of vibrant melodies and rumbling sub-bass; ‘Updraft (St019-08)’, which one listener claimed helped him see through time; and ‘Kass (St019-09)’, a musical voyage through neural pathways that should interest colleagues within the world of phrenology. Test subjects also responded positively to a number of other artefacts, with one insisting that ‘Corendor (St019-03)’ induced intense feelings of joy thanks to its use of vibrant melodies and “shuffling beats”. We draw no conclusions from this comment but think it worthy of further discussion. We invite colleagues the world over to analyse and test this audio further in order to increase our understanding of Mr Satoshi and Mr Makoto’s archive aural artefacts. We eagerly await your correspondence.

As a young woman Sacha Vingerhoeds was part of a vibrant creative community in Rotterdam that organized itself under the name of Arts. There was a primitively created studio situated in the basement of the building where spontaneous recording sessions took place. Since the house functioned as a communal space, sometimes travelers and unexpected visitors (both from Holland and abroad) passed by and contributed for a shorter or longer period to the creative output of the community. Within this context a highly intimate cassette was recorded by Sacha and friends that combined the elements of improvisation, a free creative spirit and inner spirituality. The title "Eeuwig Op Reis" is hard to translate perfectly but means something like "Endlessly In Transit" or "Perpetual Travel", in the sense of being on an endless journey or travel. No more than 10 copies of the cassette were made and given to loved ones and family in 1983.

Prequel Tapes is Marco Freivogel - a producer, DJ and live performer who’s been making electronic music since he was a teenager. What began with an accident and the rediscovery of some lost DAT tapes, has become the driving force for all his creative expression in the last years. Prequel Tapes previous albums ‘Inner Systems’ and ‘Everything is Quite Now’ received widespread critical praise for their originality, depth and composition. He has released two tape projects ‘The Pandora Star Sessions’ and ‘Dinge’ - a collaboration with the artists Mare Nero. Prequel Tapes live performances range from solo all hardware jams to a large-scale collaboration with butoh dancer Valentin Tzin and motion artist Ksenia Mozhayskaya aka nomoreless. His DJing is anything but straight techno with his recorded sets, podcasts and radio appearances chosen for mixes of the month by the likes of pitchfork, RA and dasfilter. To many people the concept of Ruin is fearful, depressing, dark - conjuring notions of decay, fallen morality, or tragedy. But to others, the idea of Ruin is of hope for what may come after - opportunities to rebuild, rethink and challenge. Ruin may be the only chance to stop the passive march towards the destruction of the feral human spirit, the failure of our imagination to the homogenising power of capital. Both the music and the artwork reflect the artists long-held view that art should challenge, jarr and provoke. Offering the balance of what’s dark and disturbing to appreciate beauty and the light. Rejecting a world where the uncomfortable is covered up with plastic veneer and platitudes as a vital artistic expression. Using a highly personalised setup of hardware collected over many years, Prequel Tapes wanders through concrete mazes and dark forests with infinite curiosity. In these cold empty spaces, Ruin oscillates freely between sunshine and shadows, where grit and gravel pay homage to the industrial anti-melodies of the 80s, appearing as earworms after the rain. The sonic DNA of teenage dreams are central to the aesthetic aspirations of Ruin, as are the sparse minimalist frameworks of composers like Arvo Pärt. Drawing upon the stains of his musical history, Prequel Tapes merges each drop into an honest, singular sound, honing in on decades of love for abstract electronics with a profound emotional sensitivity. References may reveal themselves on close listen, but never command space, serving instead as subtle threads woven carefully into a tapestry of synthesis; aware of its past but firmly grounded in the present. A special edition vinyl will be available through the Mannequin Records bandcamp, with photographs by Frankie Casillo whose work is also used for the cover art.

Hot off the back of a contribution to A-Sides Vol.9, Victor Ruiz returns for his second EP on Drumcode. The Brazilian artist has been an industrious contributor to DC over the past 12 months, beginning with his excellent debut EP ‘Nimbus’ last May. Since then, he’s played Drumcode Festival, was part of the iconic Warehouse Project party in November and also featured in the first Drumcode Indoors session in March. His production prowess will be fresh in the minds of DC faithful after ‘Intuit’, his collaboration with Thomas Schumacher, was a standout of the recent A-Sides Vol.9 compilation. The ‘Freedom’ EP is Ruiz’s next offering and emblematic of the creative breakthrough he experienced while crafting the four-track work. The title track is led by hypnotic rhythms and deep bass stabs before a vox enters the fore and builds to a delicious climax. ‘Illusions’ is a pulsating bassline-led groover that builds alongside mystical vocal effects. ‘Senses’ exudes an understated touch of Detroit soul and is a handy DJ tool for varying occasions. ‘Existence’ is a searing late-night techno affair, as layers of melody and swelling pads conjure a thrilling laser-kissed atmosphere.

SoSure Music continue to celebrate the legendary work of ‘Directors Cut’, one of house music’s most memorable partnerships. This time Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper’s euphoric vocal house classic, ‘Get Over U’ feat. B Slade, gets the rework treatment from esteemed US DJ Tedd Patterson and Berlin-based Chambray, alongside an edit from Sami Dee and Frankie’s own Mr Director’s ‘Feels Good’ Dub, which has never been released on vinyl until now. The package opens with two brand new remixes. First up is Berlin-based Chambray who has previously delivered a range of dancefloor bombs and worked with the likes of Laurent Garnier and DJ Haus while establishing himself as a respected name in underground music. Here he delivers an energetic and contemporary House meets disco rework, bright and uplifting with piano stabs, electronic claps and brilliantly reworked vocals. Next is esteemed US DJ/producer Tedd Patterson, who throughout his career has earned the title of House Music royalty and is regarded as one of the best-known house DJs in the world. He delivers a remix that retains the classic house feel; verging into disco territory with big strings and jazz influences whilst always maintaining the dancefloor focus. The B-side focuses on the original mixes that Frankie and Eric produced in 2012 which still sound just as fresh today. Sami Dee serves up a brilliant edit of the Director’s Cut Mix while Frankie’s own Mr Director’s ‘Feels Good’ Dub takes the final slot, a cut which has never been released on vinyl until now. Two new remixes from very different and unique artists, both paying homage to the original, whilst bringing a fresh new direction. Combine this with the original Director’s Cut remixes on the B side and you’ve got the perfect package - one which would no doubt have received the seal of approval by Frankie himself. Altogether it is feel good house at its best.

Hypnosis’ was one of Drumcode’s most vital under-the-radar releases of 2019. Its creator, Veerus, returns to the mothership for another top-shelf offering. The Italian’s career is a brilliant slow burner, releasing EPs sparingly over the course of his 14-year career. There’s a narrative quality to each track too, the artist reveling in a drama-laden call-and-response dynamic. All three cuts from his latest ‘System’ EP are made for big moments. The title track was created with Amsterdam’s holy rave cauldron the Gashouder in mind, and was completed by Veerus just a few days before ADE last year. Balancing on a knife’s edge between tension and euphoria, the track’s twisted synth lines sent an energy surge through the iconic venue. ‘Year’ is a deadly one-two combo of synapse-searing synths and sharp drums as jagged waves of sound throb with panoramic effect. It was a captivating highlight of Beyer’s set at Amnesia in Milan in February, the final session before the lockdown. ‘Pyramid’ was debuted at Beyer’s Cercle performance last September, sound tracking a blissful post-sunset moment at the Théâtre antique de Lugdunum in Lyon.

While the ongoing global pandemic means our chances to gather and dance beneath deep blue skies are likely to be limited, there’s never been a greater need for warm, positive and life-affirming music. NuNorthern Soul has decided to do its bit by offering up a brand new 'Summer Selections' sampler that’s packed to the rafters with magical musical treats lifted from some of the label’s most potent forthcoming releases. The EP begins with something rather special from Canadian producer Igor B: a gentle, sunrise-ready soundscape rich in languid hand percussion, bubbly synthesizer lines and glistening guitars. Entitled 'Deep Breath', the track is just one of the many highlights you’ll find on his forthcoming debut album, “Stranded Seaside”. There’s a similarly tactile and immersive feel to 'Early Morning Ferry' by George Koutalieris, a Greek producer whose debut album 'Stop, Look, Listen' will be released by NuNorthern Soul later in the year. On his contribution to 'Summer Selections Two', Koutalieris wraps lilting, sun-soaked guitar solos and soft-touch electronics around a chunky groove that doffs a cap to the more laidback end of the 1970s West Coast rock spectrum. Next up, long-time friend of the family Chris Coco delivers a stunning interpretation of 'Dinum', an overlooked neo-classical/ambient fusion track by Faroe Islands-based producer Kristian Blak’s Yggdrasil project. Coco’s simmering, string-drenched re-imagining is featured here as a teaser of NuNorthern Soul’s reissue of the 2014 track in the autumn, which will also feature a mind-blowing 10-minute rework by Mike Salta – an artist who is also featured on 'Summer Selections Two'. This time round you’ll find Salta collaborating with Mortale on the starry, EP-ending ambient bliss of 'Bells of Burgibba', a deliciously drowsy mixture of twinkling electric piano motifs, chiming lead lines and woozy pads taken from the forthcoming “Celestial Hike EP”. It paddles in similar sonic waters to label boss Phil Cooper’s stretched-out, slo-mo Balearic dub of new signing Faint Waves’ 'Aphrodesia', a teaser of the artist’s “Islands In Time EP” which can be found elsewhere on 'Summer Selections Two'. No NuNorthern Soul label sampler would be complete without a contribution from BJ Smith, an artist who has been with the imprint from its earliest days. Smith returns to the imprint with another reminder of his uncanny ability to deliver ear-catching cover versions that re-cast classic cuts as loved-up rays of Balearic sunshine. This time round Smith takes us on a huggable shuffle through Prefab Sprout’s 'All the World Loves Lovers', re-imagining it as a future Balearic anthem and a summer 2020 sing-along. It’s not only a sneak peak of what we can expect from 'Dedication to the Greats Volume 3', his first covers collection for nigh on six years, but also a life-affirming highlight of an EP that oozes musical positivity from start to finish.

Wolf Music reissue offshoot, Nothing Is Lost, strike gold again with their second release. The four track sampler cherry picks some of the greatest dub mixes to grace the legendary Easy Street label’s hall of fame, reissued and remastered. Side A serves up two proto-house bombs dubbed out to the high heavens by the one and only Paul Simpson. Firstly, Sleeque’s sumptuous ‘One For The Money’, gets a tougher makeover with Simpson’s classic touches to the drums, echoes in all the right places and delicate splices of choice vocal refrains and piano stabs. Likewise for the A2, Simpson focuses in on that peach of a bassline from Paradise Girls – Holding Back, coupling it with Special-Intention-esque synths and cascading percussive ripples. On the flip side, it’s a Blaze masterclass. First up, Alexander Hope (aka Josh Milan / one half of Blaze) ‘Let The Music Take You’. Produced alongside Blaze counterpart Kevin Hedge, the track gets the remix treatment from Klub Head – a further alias the two held. Honing in on the vibraphone mastery and bumping house rhythms they juice up the original with all the ethereal soul you could ever want. Closing out the EP, a onetime collaboration between Blaze and Otis Vick, System VIII’s super soulful ‘Underground (Untouched Dub)’. Josh Milan’s exquisite and iconic vocals marry with sweet sax licks providing the perfect late night groover or, just as equally, the ultimate beachside roller.

Although only in their mid-twenties, they have contributed heavily to the house and techno scene, DJing, promoting events, performing live sets and releasing underground floor fillers for labels such as Quintessentials, Secret Crunch, Cvmr, Dirt Crew as well as their own Vicario imprint.

Mint Condition continue their mission excavating the outer fringes of classic House and Techno. Unreleased mixes, classics and overlooked gems mined from the last 20+ of contemporary dance music are the order of the day. From Chicago, Detroit and New York to London and beyond, Mint Condition have got their expert digging hats on to bring you exclusive heat and those rarer than rare jams that have been on your wants list for years! Dig in. Housey Doingz was a sort of pre-millennial super crew of London producers and DJ's (Dave Coker, Dave Pine, Justin Bailey, Laurant Webb, Nathan Coles, Terry Francis), movers and shakers on the capital's tech-house scene. The latter half of the decade into the first half of the noughties belonged to the exciting future looking and stripped down sounds that were emanating from now cult labels like Wiggle, Swag, Surreal etc. The Housey Doingz crew were at the centre of this scene and sound, but 'Doing It' from 1997 and released on the Pagan label predates and showcases a plethora of sonic styles that later became synonymous with that scene. Borderline 'Progressive' numbers like this corking EP are real beauties and found themselves in the boxes of the top jocks of that world and more (see: Sasha, John Digweed & co). A beautifully diverse collection of cuts right here, and a very rare and sought after slab of wax among record collecting circles. For a real flavour of what was to come 'Doing It' is a dope look through the window of one of London's most exciting electronic music scenes.

Where does electronic music lead you? To the inside, to a calm and warm place where sound resonates with your body in quiet bliss, or to the outside where the rhythm wants you dance, even without moving? "wtmct" gives an answer to these questions that is complex yet extremely easy to understand in an immediate sentient and emotive way. Menelaos music is unusual and unlikely both with respect to the structure and arrangement of tracks, and the materiality and spatiality of the sound. And yet these sounds convey an immediate sensation of familiarity and ease, of beauty and relaxation. Menelaos utilizes loudness and extreme dynamics in a thoughtful and intriguing way to accentuate strange runaway sounds while maintaining the continuity of the flow of the tracks, which is Ambient to the core. This is a rare art in our time, where hypercompressed and superoptimized glossy sounds dominate most of Ambient, drone and even deep listening music. In this aspect the album follows and refines the subtle production skills of seminal electronic artists like Jan Jelinek or Terre Thaemlitz a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles. What is genuinly special about Menelaos music is the natural and seemingly effortless fusion of challenging experimentalism and a warm and soothing organic sound-design. This shows exemplary in the collaborative tracks with trombonist and bass trumpet player Achim Fink, a founding figure of the Cologne jazz and free improvisation scene of the eighties. Achim is uncompromisingand in times disruptive play merges perfectly into Menelaos serene soundscapes. This way wtmct" became a genuine album. It tells a story. It invites deep exploration but it does not demand it, thus transcending common notions of how Ambient or Electronica should sound. Text: Frank Eckert The Album includes also some warm sampels my live with the wave vol 1+ 2) from the Detroit legend Mike Huckaby to whom i very thankful.

“There was a time when the strength of a musician’s vision transcended all labels; here is a chance to dip into that pool again, and emerge not just refreshed, but alive again with the sense that we all can live in that world again, but most importantly raise the flag for excellence. Fantastic.” Jim O’Rourke An unholy grail of near mythical status finally joins the Finders Keepers Records discography in the form of this first-ever reissue of Masahiko Sato’s elusive sensual psychedelic free jazz score to the stunning Japanese witchcraft animation Belladonna Of Sadness (Kanashimi no Belladonna) directed by anime screenwriter Eiichi Yamamoto in 1973. An early featurelength example of a micro-genre in which Japanese anime producers collaborated with the “pink” film genre, Belladonna’s challenging occult, sexual and political subject matter was the cause of the film’s notoriety for many years, earning Yamamoto’s work a critical platform amongst some of the best counterculture animation films of the era such as La Planète Sauvage ( René Laloux/Roland T poor, France 1973), Marie Mathématique (Jean-Claude Forest, France 1967), Wizards (Ralph Bakshi, US 1977), Heavy Metal (Gerald Potterton, Canada 1980) and Time Masters (René Laloux/Moebius, France 1982). Drawing further stylistic similarities with Shuji Terayama/Tenjo Sajiki associated poster artist Aquirax Uno and the Hara-Kiri magazine cartoon strips Pravda/Jodelle by French artist Guy Peellaert, as well as the early flamboyant Klimtesque imagery of Jean Rollin collaborators Philippe Druillet and Nicolas Devil, Belladonna Of Sadness brought a strong European flavour to its sophisticated and stylish Japanese application which accentuated the French origins of the plot loosely based on accounts taken from the 1862 book La Sorcière (The Witch) by French historian Jules Michelet. Over the last decade Belladonna Of Sadness has risen from the ashes and now shines brighter than ever. Now on the eve of its third or fourth global DVD release, fans no longer have to wait four months for third generation VHS telecine rubs from “that guy” in the States, or stuff their ambitious wish lists into the hands of any lucky friends visiting Tokyo in the summer. Belladonna has been used as nightclub projections by clued-up VJs and been restored by discerning feminist folk singers and improv bands while influencing illustrators, fashion designers and other creative types along the way. Original copies of the soundtrack, however, are much less likely to rear their heads on a weekly basis, with prices literally doubling each time the original stock copies swap hands amongst the same Italian dealers at central European record fairs. Italian soundtracks are expensive anyway, but this one, as I’m sure you’ll agree, has got extra credentials. Finders Keepers Records, in direct collaboration with Sato himself, agree that this record should finally be liberated amongst those who know the magic words. With our decision to keep this album “strictly Sato” we removed a track - the main orchestral love theme by Asei Kobayashi and Mayumi Tachibana, which in all honesty is very much detached from Sato’s psychedelic soundtrack. Kept intact, however, are the songs sung and penned by Sato’s then wife Chinatsu Nakayama, including the track entitled Tbfs (answers on a postcard?) that only appears on the master tapes and never actually made it to the theatrical cut of the film (although the theme is briefly alluded to, in different instrumentation, in a cut-scene available on the German Dvd). This reissue project also marks the beginning of a longer intended relationship between Finders Keepers and Masahiko Sato, exploring his recorded work in both film music, jazz and avant garde composition

A slowed down tribute to the dichotomy of mellow/heavy in mid 90's Jungle/Drum n' Bass, "The Shining Wall" begins with eery pads and a forlorn siren call, gently driven along by a subtle amen groove. Midway through, things turn more aggressive with distorted break switchups and a smattering of mentasm for good measure, before coming full circle and leaving you with a warm but somewhat uncertain end. B - Sgt. Risk - Weaponized Soul The flip is a more ominous affair, inspired by the short transition period ca. '96, just before techstep became a defined term. "Weaponized Soul" sets the mood with foreboding pads, until it drops into a relentless barrage of industrial beats and a cavernous sub. In the midway breakdown everything drops away, clearing the stage for a monstrous, swarmlike synthriff. Both of these tracks where never meant to be "conceptual tributes", but just ended up that way. A is fairly new, while B is the umpteenth version of a ten year old tune. Big up the Dolphin Man for convincing us to put them out together.

Lust, murder, assassination, alienation, war, depravity and credit cards. Troubled times demand troubled troubadours. And here they are – 16 seismic slices of misfortune, desperation, woe and plain high-weirdness – delivered by a stellar cast of country music luminaries and a host of valiant battered journeymen.

In that seminal epoch of the late-1960s and early-1970s – the times were a changin’ – and it wasn’t always for the better.

Autocide, infanticide, deicide, suicide…and the puzzling desire to transmigrate into a stuffed toy are just some of the delights and low-lights presented for your primordial listening pleasure.

Look out trouble, here we come…

Come join the Reaper…

Fiery Judgements, Rapturous Apocalyptic Revelations and Death’s Icy Grip. This Brim-stoned collection of weathered mountain-prophets and battered backwoods-poets features Angelic Voices, Infernal Visions and Gospel Redemptions, Bluegrass Exultations and heartfelt Sinful Lamentations. Most often waxed on marginal labels and distributed in penurious amounts, these Troubled Troubadours sing of scalding Hellfire Flames, tortured Satanic Slaves and pragmatic Afterlife Options.

Songs of Inspiration. Songs of Desperation.

Years in the making – ‘Hillbillies In Hell’ (Volume X) presents 16 timeless tribulations – chilling Hillside Hollers, Dark Angelic conversations and Death-cheating celebrations – sweet, virginal Declarations of Doom and the harrowing, final silence of The Grave gloom.

A buried cache of forgotten 45s – many of these sides are impossibly rare and are reissued here for the very first time.

Nobody gets out of here alive…

The new OLD MAN Gloom album "Darkness Of Being" (aka Seminar XI) sees the notorious experimental super-group forge on their legacy after a slight suspension in uncertainty following the passing of bassist/vocalist Caleb Scofield. It was decided that the remaining members Aaron Turner (Sumac/Isis), Nate Newton (Converge), and drummer Santos Montano would continue to forge on with OLD MAN Gloom and would bring in Scofield's former Cave In bandmate, Stephen Brodsky, to take Caleb's place amongst the pulse.

Made in the sun-kissed network of steel. Astral high fidelity showers soak an Rnb-esque vocal in acoustic resonance. Skippy percussion wraps around the clock, representative of the early classic UK formula. It breaches the form of what we know as ‘functional’, composing and decomposing its synthetic elastic quality providing a versatile record, with a phantom desire to run off the clock and explore the more experimental and broken beat fruits. Intricate accidents and harmonious synthesized licks, consonant with the lower sub-notes, bending and curling around the dominant sonic’s. To summarize, a medley of multi-dimensional, warm and trippy house cutz for domestic environment or club.

Part inspired by the prose of his favourite author James Baldwin, South Brooklyn's Korre 's experience of being a black man in America forms an integral part of his work, even if it's largely instrumental. "I always make sure my music has elements of pain, beauty, and darkness," says Korre in his bio. That vibe is certainly felt across his stunning debut EP for Utrecht's 030303 Records. 'End of Time' is a deep, dystopian piece of club music, as much suited for the floor as it is for the introverted mind. With virtually no intro, the listener gets sucked into the intenseness of the track right away. 'Crimson' is equally dark, filled with spooky vocal snippets and washed out acid sounds. 'Don't Wanna Wait' is a heartfelt ambient spacer, not unlike the eeriest work of Burial. 'Silver Exo' then is probably the best track on the record even if it's hard to pick a favourite. Korr? slowly brings the dancefloor back with this beautifully crafted builder, again filled with abstract vocal snippets. Closing this beast of a debut record is 'St Blues', consisting of a male monologue, captivating droney melodies and acid bubbles in the background. It's the conclusion of the first chapter by this artist we will no doubt hear more of in the future.
