Trembling Air
LP | 2016 | EU | Original (Other People)
19,99 €*
Release:2016 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
With their new album entitled Trembling Air, Hungarian electroacoustic duo 12z (onetwozed) present an eclectic palette of intricate, improvisatory tone poems. This is the first of two upcoming full-lengths with the label and the second,Trembling Air, will follow in just a few months. As pure improvisors, Bálint Szabó and Márton Kristóf have constructed a substantial body of work, including film scores, studio recordings, and a significant archive of 12z [sessionz] — weekly improvised jams with a shifting cast of collaborators. These [sessionz] were compiled into a self-released podcast which followed their self-titled debut on Hungarian label Farbwechsel. All this is not even to mention their live work, which is at the foundation of 12z's craft and artistry. With Bálint on guitar, Márton on electronics, and guest member Áron Porteleki often joining on drums, they fluctuate between jagged rhythmic passages, floating moments of harmonic tension, and any other form that emerges, always chiseling structure from the chaos. Trembling Air marks another direction in 12z's work, being their first entirely electronic recording. The album was sparked by György Pálfi's film Free Fall, for which it was recorded as a potential score, but it stands strong independently, conjuring its own strange images.

3 Teens Kill 4 was born in the summer of 1980 in the East Village of New York City. They took their name from a New York Post headline. The group consisted of Doug Bressler, Brian Butterick, Julie Hair, Jesse Hultberg, David Wojnarowicz. There was a conscious decision not to have a front person or lead singer. David made cassette tapes with voices and sounds that he held up close to a microphone, fast-forwarding and rewinding. Julie tried different rhythms on a Korg rhythm machine. Brian played a Casio drum machine and Jesse was on bass. Doug joined the group in time to make the debut album. He was a music lover who understood how to avoid covering over the band’s non-musicality.Their debut 7-song mini-album “No Motive” was recorded in Fall 1982 and self-released in 1983. Utilizing rhythm boxes, tapes of news reports, odd percussion tools, snatches of song, they chanted political narrative ideas about the modern mess at the time. The album is an amalgam of urban life, a twisted, anti-rhetorical approach to social issues. Songs weave together to create an intelligent, jarring sound. Razor sharp guitar licks and hauntingly ominous bass lines create a tense, oblique abstraction of pain and chaos. For this reissue we’ve added 3 previously unreleased bonus tracks. Doug says, “These songs are very deliberately an experiment in Postmodernism. Sound bytes were stolen from the airwaves and recorded onto bargain cassette tapes. We were stripping the structure of the popular song to the bone. A sort of sonic Duchamp. And throughout it all, runs a childlike sense of play: the judicious use of toys, the schoolyard chants. All of this was happening during the dark and soul-numbing Age of Reagan, with the AIDS crisis looming on the horizon.” All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The jacket features a replica of the original front cover with a black and white photo by Seiji Kakizaki and updated back cover featuring a never before seen collage by David Wojnarowicz. Each copy includes a 12-page booklet with liner notes from each band member, photos, lyrics and press clippings. We’ve also printed a special 12”x24” fold out diptych painting by David Wojnarowicz whom this reissue is dedicated to. “We were representative of our time and place. East village, New York City, 1980s. All-night, after-hour busboy jobs in trendy nightclubs, early morning breakfast at Veselka’s diner. Drugs and no-drugs. Gay and not-gay. New York.” - Jesse Hultberg

5.6.7.8's are a campy female Japanese rock & roll band that borrows heavily from Shonen Knife's kitschy sense of humor, but not their buzzing, three-chord Ramones homage. Instead, 5.6.7.8's follow the frenzied attack of pseudo-rockabilly punkers like the Cramps, which makes their Americana lyrics all the stranger. Bomb the Twist is a six-track EP that illustrates both the band's strengths -- namely, its sheer sonic power and occasionally catchy riffs.

After noticing the group's reaction with the music, he contacted Adam and Dustin to see if they could write the score for his new oeuvre. The duo were given complete artistic freedom and they treated the score with the same care and attention as their debut album. They recorded more than sixty minutes of music over a four-month period during the summer of 2013 across studios in Brussels, Berlin and Reykjavik, with the help of their long time collaborative sound engineer Francesco Donadello. During the recording process they realised, that this would become their official second studio album. McGregor provided them with the inspiration to expand their sound palette into more electronic territory, whilst keeping their signature chamber sound, resulting in a very unique record.

Following the June 1977 release of Let There Be Rock, the group brought their wild, raucous, hard partying live show to the States, hitting San Francisco's Old Waldorf for 2 legendary nights. Kicked In The Teeth was recorded Sept. 3, 1977 and pulls from all 5 previous albums with a focus on the latest. Ending the night with an epic "Problem Child" this is classic era Scott/Young AC/DC and a fine document of one of the best and rawest hard rock bands in history. For our next release we welcome back two of Hamburg’s finest and most recent international exports: Adana Twins. Last seen on our latest Various Artists compilation, the duo returns with three absolutely stunning tracks of low slung, infectious cuts blurring the lines between House and Techno with an undeniable brush stroke of character the two are quickly becoming synonymous for. ‘Flower Of Cane’ kicks things off in an almost sinister fashion with massive low end bursts and a fever inducing, single note that never stops rising culminating in a climactic crescendo of dance floor euphoria while ‘Ortus’ takes a much more ‘up-beat’ approach with dreamy arpeggios and shimmering atmospherics laid over a pulsing bassline resulting in a gorgeous number ideal for a number of memorable moments. Wrapping up the originals is the guaranteed summer anthem: ‘Relentless fest. Jeppe Kjellberg’ where sultry vocals and lush aural artifacts launch sensations to uncharted new heights. Not done yet, we asked none other than the brilliant Andre Lodemann to create his revision of ‘Relentless feat. Jeep Kjellberg’ and he, as always, delivered big time. With not only one but two solid reworks of the original Lodemann’s remixes need no description other than there is a vocal and a dub version to satisfy any DJ’s sensibility. We hope you enjoy.

Cologne based house maestro Adryiano hits the ground running with his first release, the Snapback Grooves EP on Soul Notes Recordings. "Open Up" is full of shuffling hats, 90s synth stabs and a deftly cut-up female vocal. The rhythm skips you along with the beat, the bassline barely audible beneath a pounding kick drum. Kastil's remix soaks the track in depth, bringing the pads to the forefront and making light use of the vocal cuts. "Feel Like" brings us back into the glossy world of new house music: the hats still shuffle, the female vocal still cries out and the stabs still keep you moving, but the polished production brings this track straight onto 2012 dancefloors.

After a quick 4 years hiatus, filled with releases on Innervisions, Maeve and a couple of remixes, Aera is finally back on his own Aleph Music imprint with 3 unique tracks. A1. Two Planets is the most obvious track of the EP. An exercise in outsider trance, a pulsating, polyrhythmic synth propels the track forward, the intricate 77 pattern keeps a steady pace, while background strings provide all the drama. B1. Stylistically reminiscent of Aera's first releases on Aleph Music, Black Glitz is the deepest track of the bunch. Floating on a cloud of dreamy pads and voices, that arpeggio makes you realise immediately who you are dealing with. B2. Maskull is a rather ambiguous little tune. Somewhat rough around the edges, sparkling in the darkness of late nights, dwelling in voices and fog, this is the one for the heads.

Do to the Beast is the first new album by The Afghan Whigs in over a decade and a half. Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1988, the band has long stood out from its peers, with their savage, rapturous blend of hard rock, classic soul, and frontman Greg Dulli’s searing obsessions. The new album serves as both a homecoming – it marks their return to Sub Pop, for whom the Whigs were the first signing from outside the label’s Northwest base – and a glimpse into the future of one of the most acclaimed bands of the past thirty years.Do to the Beast proves an appropriately feral title for one of the most intense, cathartic records of Dulli’s entire career – one that adds fresh twists to The Afghan Whigs canon. On it, one finds the film noir storytelling of Black Love, the exuberance of 1965, the brutal introspection of Gentlemen, but rendered with a galvanized musical spirit and rhythmic heft that suggests transcendence and hope amidst the bloodletting.180g vinyl.

"“Cleromancy” isn’t a word one normally finds in rock lyrics. Then again, In Spades – the forthcoming album by The Afghan Whigs, from which the new song “Oriole” hails – is defined only by its own mystical inner logic. The term means to divine, in a supernatural manner, a prediction of destiny from the random casting of lots: the throwing of dice, picking a card from a deck. From its evocative cover art to the troubled spirits haunting its halls, In Spades casts a spell that challenges the listener to unpack its dark metaphors and spectral imagery. On the one hand, In Spades is as quintessentially Afghan Whigs as anything the group has ever done – fulfilling its original mandate to explore the missing link between howling Midwestern punk like Die Kreuzen and Hüsker Dü, The Temptations’ psychedelic soul symphonies, and the expansive hard-rock tapestries of Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. At the same time, this new record continues to push beyond anything in the Whigs’ previous repertoire – another trademark, along with the explosive group dynamic captured on the recording. Indeed, the chemistry of the lineup – Dulli, guitarists Dave Rosser and Jon Skibic, drummer Patrick Keeler, multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson, and Whigs co-founder/bassist John Curley – set the tone for In Spades’ creation. When it came to follow up the band’s triumphant return to recording – Do To the Beast (2014), which was the band’s first ever Top 40 album, – the die was cast. “This is the first time since Black Love [the Whigs’ 1996 noir masterpiece] that we’ve done a full-blown band album,” Dulli says. The joys, sorrows, and upheavals of innocence and experience echo throughout In Spades: it powerfully documents where The Afghan Whigs have been, and where they might go next. For Dulli and Curley, it’s a journey that, since their origins as one of the first Sub Pop acts to be signed from outside the label’s Pacific Northwest base, has spanned decades. Dulli notes they were barely in their twenties when they first started the band, and yet here they are, fulfilling dreams long held and frequently realized. “Having a break from the Whigs helped me remember what made it so rewarding,” Curley says. “Over the course of a lifetime, there are constants, and there’s also change. You see who’s dropped off the vine – who’s going in reverse, and who’s still by your side. It’s interesting to see where life takes you, and where it doesn’t. That’s the journey and it hasn’t stopped.” In Spades was recorded at Rick Nelson’s studio Marigny Sound in New Orleans, LA."

Age of Man are an El Dorado-based rock trio comprised of Matt Benson on lead guitar and vocals, Brandon Borden on drums, and Eric Stone on bass/organ. Their thick and muddy brand of blues-steeped guitar rock is reminiscent of a simpler time, stripped of modern musical conventions and cleverly re-imagined from its very core. With their debut full length the trio shows all their talents: Lots of catchy riffs, great vocals plus solid, heavy, driving rhythm. 10 tracks, 6 from their previous release, but remastered to perfection and 4 new tracks that make up what we would call an excellent album. Let the Blues do the talking.

During the mid-1970s, the Aggrovators could do no wrong. This ace team of session musicians that was forged as an off-shoot of the Soul Syndicate were responsible for some of the biggest hits of the decade, recorded with Bunny Lee’s rising stars, such as Johnnie Clarke and his rival, Cornell Campbell. Following on from the great Shalom Dub set of 1975, Rasta Dub ’76 is another truly magnificent dub set culled from Aggrovators hits (by Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell and others); this time, the entire album was given a scintillating mix-down at King Tubby’s studio by the great Prince Jammy, and the sonic excellence has stood the test of time. Another must-have for all connoisseurs of dub.

The Arab world back in the 70s and 80s gave us quite a few very interesting rock and pop acts. Ahmed Fakroun from Libya was one of them. Here we have his 1983 album whose title means 'Words Of Love' in English. And in fact his kind of ethno pop seems to go deeper than just to the charts where a song like 'Soleil! Soleil!' - a typical yet outstanding synthie pop/new wave anthem that would have gone well with David Bowie or Duran Duran in the early '80s - definitely would have belonged. Other tunes are more Oriental with great string arrangements and those mystical melodies only Arab and Oriental music provides. This is one of the lost gems of '80s pop music which fetches prices up to 500,00 Euros for a nearly mint copy today. So for fans of cool '80s pop with a memorable edge are now able to grab a copy of this forgotten jewel.

As a soloist, Al Cohn was not such an inspired tenor sax player as his colleague Zoot Sims. But he was a superb arranger, an unprofitable yet highly important function when it comes to such workshops. And though Manny Albam also played the baritone sax, his real instrument was the pen. He arranged not only jazz, but also film music and musicals. His arrangements were multi-facetted and tailormade to suit the accomplishments of the individual instrumentalists. For this particular "Jazz Workshop", the record company RCA-Victor could afford the services of excellent session musicians: Joe Newman and Freddie Green came from the Basie Band, Al Cohn, Bernie Glow, and Nick Travis from the Woody Herman Band, and the studio musicians Dick Katz, Buddy Jones and Osie Johnson were present at all times of day and night anyway. As long as you don't expect fierce battles between five tenors, or six tweeters on the trumpet, then you will enjoy this LP with its swinging, relaxed improvisations on such works as "Rosetta", "Linger Awhile", and "I'm Coming Virginia" - and you will realise that Lester Young’s sound has been heard, cultivated and further developed by these musicians.Four trumpets, a tenor sax, and then a piano, guitar, bass and drums into the bargain - that’s certainly no common ensemble, but it certainly is a good reason to purchase this LP. And for certain, this album has been missing in your collection to this day. This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

San Francisco based DJ Al Lover's list of collaborations contain names like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Goat and White Fence, and he has remixed bands like The Night Beats and Thee Oh Sees. Except from producing mind-altering music, Al Lover is also the official DJ of Levitation and tours Europe extensively. Al Lover's double album release 'Zodiak versions' on Hoga Nord Rekords (2015) opened up for a beautiful cooperation between the label and the artist and now the two parts are taking it to the next level with the release of The Nymphaea Caerulea EP. On this picture disc EP, a third player flavors the music and that is Cairo Liberation Front (CLF). Residing in Amsterdam this collective represents the future of European club music lends equally from House, punk and psychedelia, filtered through generations of hedonistic groove. The six tracks on this picture disc EP holds the essence of what psychedelic dance music is about - escapism. Where to escape? Well, due their sound, CLF could just as well be from where their name implies because this record oozes more of northern Africa than of northern Europe. It puts the listener outside of time somewhere on the banks of the Nile, just before dawn. The combination of Al Lover's use of samples, drum machines, live instrumentation and analog synthesizers, clashes beautifully with the fierce energy of the CLF's sound of cracked software, American hip-hop, Euro house and Arabic rhythms. This is the score to the next Arabic spring.

LP | 1973 | US | Reissue (Superior Viaduct)

Release:1973 / US – Reissue
Genre:Film / TV
Animated sci-fi masterpiece La Planète Sauvage (a.k.a. Fantastic Planet), winner at Cannes Film Festival in 1973, is a bizarre and beautiful film. Towering blue-skinned figures, tiny humanoids in the midst of revolt, and drug-induced Tantric sex transport viewers to a truly magical setting. Composer Alain Goraguer creates an equally hypnotic score from a palette of effects-laden guitars, flutes, Fender Rhodes and strings. While the lush arrangements are reminiscent of Goraguer’s collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg in the 1960s, space-age synth flourishes suggest a more psychedelic era. Moody vignettes flow together in tense, slow-paced funk rhythms and Baroque textures. It comes as no surprise that La Planète Sauvage has been cited as an influence on contemporary artists such as French duo Air and American hip-hop producers J Dilla and Madlib. Gorgeous, interplanetary soundscapes resemble the surreal meeting point between Pink Floyd’s Obscured by Clouds and Broadcast’s Future Crayon. This long out-of-print vinyl release features the original soundtrack recording and newly designed artwork. Recommended for fans of Ennio Morricone, Basil Kirchin and David Axelrod.

Repress with different artwork! Alain Péters is one of the best-kept secrets in the music scene of the Indian Ocean and beyond. His music is a unique blend of Creole blues, maloya and international folk. Péters travelled through the '70s and the '80s like a shooting star, alone or with a band, with his Sahelian lute, his reel-to-reel tape recorder, firewater and ill-fated genius. He died in 1995, aged 43. Poet, musician, singer and melody-maker, he left behind a handful of sublime songs which are gathered here for the first time on vinyl.

incl. Stanislav Tolkachev RemixesJust 6 months after his debut release on the label, Weekend Circuit invite Alderaan back at the helm of techno. Alter ego of Buenos Aires artist Franco De Michele - already revered by some of the industry greats - presents 'Statics' / 'Golden Ratio', a manifestation of progressive and dynamic techno, with Stanislav Tolkachev taking the B side.Hailed as one of live techno's notorious artists, Stanislav makes his first appearance on the London based imprint, presenting an abstract take of ever intense, rolling techno for the remixes. With previous releases on the likes of Semantica & M_REC LTD, Tolkachev - originally from Ukraine - comes as no newbie.Falling through the techno paradigm, this multi-tiered EP cuts a circuitous progression of moving sounds and energy. With the embodiment and animation of life, Alderaan adds his percussive punch and whirlwind of complexity to both 'Statics' & 'Golden Ratio' on the A side. Hosting 2 tracks on side B, Stanislav bounds through with a fix of dark vitality and abstract session, cascading between light and dark.Hyper-dynamic, pulsating sounds make these noise churning tunes absolute "must have" tools of the trade. Abrasive, energising and reliably trippy, this release is a tension building exploration of effective, outdoor environment music, putting Weekend Circuit once again at the forefront of many artists collection.

Alderaan (Mindtrip, Weekend Circuit) is the a.k.a. of Franco De Michele, techno raising talent based in Buenos Aires who is the new signing artist of White Rose Records. Starting with a deep ambient track, the release becomes stronger with Jade where we find a mental techno track with nice percussions, but keeping the deepness of the beginning. With Form of distraction the release explotes with a huge mental and for moments psycho techno track that seems to lead the release.Permanence slows drives the EP to the darkness that suppose the end of this piece. Strong release to present one of the new values of White Rose.

The Antinote guys have always been keen on introducing new names to you and this addition to the label’s catalogue makes no exception to the rule: they are pleased to present Sfarot, the debut EP from Alek Lee, a musician currently living in Tel-Aviv..The geographic origin of the artists on the Parisian imprint has never been felt as much as on Alek Lee’s debut 12”. In a very “fourth world” manner, Alek Lee brings together middle-eastern influences in his music with ease and without ever having it sounding cliché: on Harabait and Sfarot (and its dub version), his friends and him play the violin, the bass clarinet and the accordion in a way which reminds of Klezmer music, putting the three songs on the EP in line with both his musical education and his cultural background. This seems strikingly true when taking into account the process Alek Lee went through to record the tittle-track: the original material used in Sfarot comes from a recording Lee did a few years, and on which were recorded traditional songs Israeli children used to learn at school, performed by a choir of very young kids. Both conceptually and musically hypnotizing, Sfarot and its dub version take the listener on a slightly psychedelic tripas the haunted voices from the kids loose themselves in long reverbs and are backed by a wide range of instruments played by the Israeli musician including an electric organ, percussions, etc.And if you are still in need of more dubby excursions, the closing track is the one for you.

After spending much of the ‘70s humping his congos around New York as a session musician, Nigerian Aleke Kanonu pulled in some favours to record an album of his own. The result was Aleke, a criminally obscure Afrobeat/Funk/Jazz masterpiece featuring Buddy Williams on drums, George Davis on guitar and a cameo from Wynton Marsalis on flugelhorn. There are only four tracks on the album but they are all killers. N’Gwode sounds like Fela Kuti and Manu Dibangu hanging out with Bobby Womack, probably somewhere across 110th Street. ‘Keep New York Clean’ struts like Shaft after a successful bust. And ‘Mothers Day’ keeps things sweet and soulful, before Wynton Marsalis brings back the groove with his flugelhorn on ‘Home Sweet Home’. Until recently you would have had to take out a second mortgage to get hold of Akele. And sold a kidney for the Happiness/Nwanne, Nwanne, Nwanne 12’’ Kanonu released a year later. Thankfully PMG has re-issued the LP and the EP, with the CD version containing both. - Peter Moore.

Alemayehu Eshete is considered the golden voice of Ethopia. Since his first hit single "Seul" in 1961 he has become the father figure of the soulful stream of Ethopian music. In Ethiopia no other musician adapted the newest trends from the US soul scene as consequently as Alemayehu did. With this new 7" he continues his soulful approach on Ethopian music. His funky classic Alteleyeshegnem is here re-interpretated by the Philophon house band in an even funkier way than the original. A tough beat is crisscrossed by mystic harmonies and a pumping bassline. Temar Ledje points out the sweet side of master Alemayehu. This is another classic tune that comes dosed with a rejuvenating cure by the Philophon production team. Just listen!

Genre:Rock / Indie
Rocket is Philadelphia-based artist Alex G’s eighth full-length release—an assured statement that follows a slate of humble masterpieces, many of them self-recorded and self-released, stretching from 2010’s RACE to his 2015 Domino debut, Beach Music. Amid the Rocket recording process, Alex made headlines for catching the attention of Frank Ocean, who asked him to play guitar on his two 2016 albums, Endless and Blonde. More than any stylistic cues, what Alex took from the experience was a newfound confidence in collaboration. Rocket wears this collaborative spirit proudly, and in its numerous contributors presents a restless sense of musical experimentation - effortlessly jumping from distorted sound collage to dreamy folk music to bouncing Americana. Rocket illustrates a cohesive vision of contemporary American experience; the cast of characters that Alex G inhabits have fun, fall in love, develop obsessions, get in trouble, and—much like rockets themselves—ultimately they burn out. Alex, though, in a collection of songs that’s both his tightest and most adventurous, is poised only for the ascent.
