Ben Webster was considered one of the ‘big three’ of swing tenors along with Coleman Hawkins (his main
influence) and Lester Young. ‘Blue Saxophones’ is a studio album recorded in 1957 by Coleman Hawkins and
Ben Webster. Accompanied by a rhythm section with Herb Ellis guitar, Alvin Stoller drums and Ray Brown on
double bass led by Oscar Peterson. They just blend together beautifully, and with the great Oscar Peterson on
piano, the approach is always very tasteful. This encounter shows the two veterans at the peaks of their powers.
Most of the album is a relaxed meeting of old friends, though. Coleman and Webster duet beautifully on the
heads of “La Rosita” and “It Never Entered My Mind”.

Songs like “Deep River” and “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” were well-known to any African American church-goer at the time and unknown by the white audiences. Interestingly, Witherspoon chose the popular Randy Van Horne Singers (theme songs to the Flintstones and the Jetsons cartoons) to sing backing vocals on ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’. Most famous was his version of Bessie Smith’s “Ain’t Nobody’s Business.” However, Witherspoon’s appearance at the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival restarted his career and exposed him to a new generation of record-buying fans. ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’, released in 1959, hoped to capitalize on Witherspoon’s newfound popularity (particularly with white audiences) by bringing traditional African- American spirituals into the national arena.

Hans Albers was a German actor and singer.
He was the biggest male movie star in
Germany between 1930 and 1945 and one
of the most popular German actors of the
twentieth century. Today his music is still
widely known in modern Germany, even
among young people. His most famous
song by far is “Auf der Reeperbahn nachts
um halb eins”, (“On the Reeperbahn at
Half Past Midnight”) which has become
one of the best known songs about
Hamburg and an unofficial anthem of the
colourful neighbourhood of St. Pauli. The
Hans-Albers-Platz, one block south of the

Walter Wanderley’s debut album ‘O Samba É
Mais Samba’ was released in Argentina as ‘El
Samba Es Mas Samba Con Walter Wanderley’,
the North American market named this LP as
‘Walter Wanderley’s Brazilian Organ’, and a
second release in US made it as ‘From Rio With
Love’. Wanderley was known for his distinctive
staccato stuttering style and mastery of the
Hammond B-3 organ and on later recordings
and during live concerts a L Series Hammond.
Walter Wanderley was already famous in his
native country Brazil in the late 1950s and
became an internationally renowned star in the
mid-1960s through his collaboration with the
singer Astrud Gilberto.

The main ingredient to a good duet is that of
mutual respect, professional admiration, even
love, which often shines through a particular
performance, and the pairings of Louis
Armstrong with Bing Crosby on the relaxed
“Gone Fishing”, or with Velma Middleton on
“Honeysuckle Rose” or with “The Voice” Frank
Sinatra on “Ad-Lib Blues”, or Ella Fitzgerald
on “Summertime”, the great Louis “Satchmo”
Armstrong significantly being the common
denominator in each duo. Also included are two
rare duets with Billie Holiday on “My Sweet
Hunk O’ Trash” and “You Can’t Lose A Broken
Heart,” while Armstrong and bandleader Louis
Jordan perform an entertaining version of the
classic “You Rascal You”.
