Some miracles get broken up into small
bits, leaving fate, circumstance and the
right people at the right time to reconstruct
them. That John Coltrane played with
Thelonious Monk in 1957 remains one
of those astounding miracles. The album
contains three unforgettable tracks
featuring Monk and Coltrane grooving
away beautifully. “Ruby, My Dear” contains
a mellow, lush feel suitable for sitting back,
“Trinkle, Tinkle,” a definitely interesting
Monk-ish title, showcases Coltrane’s
insane chops and “Nutty,” one of Monk’s
most beguilingly catchy tunes. Thelonious
Monk and John Coltrane melded together
inexplicably and created some of the most
amazing tracks ever laid down in the name
of jazz. The album contains 2 Bonus tracks.

Sonny Rollins (making his recording debut) on "Bouncing With Bud" and "Wail". The 1951 trio session
features Dillon “Curley” Russell and Max Roach on "Un Poco Loco" and "A Night In Tunisia" and
shows Powell as a rhythmic player as well as a chordal one on these bouncy Afro-Cuban type
numbers. Side two with George Duvivier and Art Taylor includes eight master takes from the 1953
session. "I Want to Be Happy" and "Sure Thing" were also released as 78 rpm singles.

The main ingredient to a good duet is that of
mutual respect, professional admiration, even
love, which often shines through a particular
performance, and the pairings of Louis
Armstrong with Bing Crosby on the relaxed
“Gone Fishing”, or with Velma Middleton on
“Honeysuckle Rose” or with “The Voice” Frank
Sinatra on “Ad-Lib Blues”, or Ella Fitzgerald
on “Summertime”, the great Louis “Satchmo”
Armstrong significantly being the common
denominator in each duo. Also included are two
rare duets with Billie Holiday on “My Sweet
Hunk O’ Trash” and “You Can’t Lose A Broken
Heart,” while Armstrong and bandleader Louis
Jordan perform an entertaining version of the
classic “You Rascal You”.

Songs like “Deep River” and “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” were well-known to any African American church-goer at the time and unknown by the white audiences. Interestingly, Witherspoon chose the popular Randy Van Horne Singers (theme songs to the Flintstones and the Jetsons cartoons) to sing backing vocals on ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’. Most famous was his version of Bessie Smith’s “Ain’t Nobody’s Business.” However, Witherspoon’s appearance at the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival restarted his career and exposed him to a new generation of record-buying fans. ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’, released in 1959, hoped to capitalize on Witherspoon’s newfound popularity (particularly with white audiences) by bringing traditional African- American spirituals into the national arena.

One of Fitzgerald’s most acclaimed live performances. At this concert in Berlin, Fitzgerald improvised lyrics for “Mack
the Knife” after forgetting the original lyrics. In recognition of this, she received the Best Female Vocal Performance. This
album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. During her Scat solo on ‘How High the Moon’, Fitzgerald quotes
the Charlie Parker composition ’Ornithology’, which is in fact based on the chord changes for ’How High the Moon’, as a
springboard for her own scat improvisation. This recording of ’How High the Moon’ is considered one of Fitzgerald’s best scat
solos, if not one of the best in jazz. “Ella in Hollywood” features several songs that serve as starting points for Ella’s seemingly
effortless scat solos, and a selection of beautiful ballads. This album features Ella at the height of her vocal powers.
