Songs like “Deep River” and “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” were well-known to any African American church-goer at the time and unknown by the white audiences. Interestingly, Witherspoon chose the popular Randy Van Horne Singers (theme songs to the Flintstones and the Jetsons cartoons) to sing backing vocals on ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’. Most famous was his version of Bessie Smith’s “Ain’t Nobody’s Business.” However, Witherspoon’s appearance at the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival restarted his career and exposed him to a new generation of record-buying fans. ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’, released in 1959, hoped to capitalize on Witherspoon’s newfound popularity (particularly with white audiences) by bringing traditional African- American spirituals into the national arena.

Bud's first Blue Note dates are here in complete form as originally released on two 10” albums. The
1949 sessions features drummer Roy Haynes, bassist Tommy Potter and the horns of Fats Navarro &
Sonny Rollins (making his recording debut) on "Bouncing With Bud" and "Wail". The 1951 trio session
features Dillon “Curley” Russell and Max Roach on "Un Poco Loco" and "A Night In Tunisia" and
shows Powell as a rhythmic player as well as a chordal one on these bouncy Afro-Cuban type
numbers. Side two with George Duvivier and Art Taylor includes eight master takes from the 1953
session. "I Want to Be Happy" and "Sure Thing" were also released as 78 rpm singles.

“Symphony No. 9 in D minor” is the last symphony upon which Anton Bruckner worked, leaving the
last movement incomplete at the time of his death in 1896. Van Beinum, the Dutch conductor, was a
specialist in the music of Bruckner. One of the best recordings of the Bruckner 9th, some say that it is
THEE best, was recorded in Amsterdam in September 1956 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. This
is, by any standards, a great account of the 9th, one that is more dramatic than epic, a performance
that anatomizes this great wounded giant of a symphony. Eduard van Beinum is responsible for the
Concertgebouw Orchestra's Bruckner tradition. Eduard van Beinum was a great Brucknerian.

Reverend Gary Davis was a singer-songwriter, master guitarist and a true virtuoso in the Piedmont
blues fingerpicking style born in Laurens, South Carolina, in the Piedmont region. Jack White
mentioned him as one of his guitar heroes in the documentary ‘It Might Get Loud’ and showed the
reverend’s videoclip of “Death Don't Have No Mercy” (He'll come to your house and he won't stay
long). He played the guitar with his thumb and index finger on a way only a blind man can play it. As
many of his songs were covered, this song was recorded by Hot Tuna, The Grateful Dead and Bob
Dylan. If heaven really exists, Reverend Gary Davis will be playing at the gates to welcome us all in.

The main ingredient to a good duet is that of
mutual respect, professional admiration, even
love, which often shines through a particular
performance, and the pairings of Louis
Armstrong with Bing Crosby on the relaxed
“Gone Fishing”, or with Velma Middleton on
“Honeysuckle Rose” or with “The Voice” Frank
Sinatra on “Ad-Lib Blues”, or Ella Fitzgerald
on “Summertime”, the great Louis “Satchmo”
Armstrong significantly being the common
denominator in each duo. Also included are two
rare duets with Billie Holiday on “My Sweet
Hunk O’ Trash” and “You Can’t Lose A Broken
Heart,” while Armstrong and bandleader Louis
Jordan perform an entertaining version of the
classic “You Rascal You”.

He was the biggest male movie star in
Germany between 1930 and 1945 and one
of the most popular German actors of the
twentieth century. Today his music is still
widely known in modern Germany, even
among young people. His most famous
song by far is “Auf der Reeperbahn nachts
um halb eins”, (“On the Reeperbahn at
Half Past Midnight”) which has become
one of the best known songs about
Hamburg and an unofficial anthem of the
colourful neighbourhood of St. Pauli. The
Hans-Albers-Platz, one block south of the
Reeperbahn, has a statue of Hans Albers.

This material, recorded at the famous San Francisco nightclub,
includes some of the duo's standards such as 'Sweet Woman Blues,' 'Born To Live The Blues,' 'Baby, I Knocked On Your Door,' and 'I Got A Little Girl.' The set is a fine showcase for their interplay, as McGhee's guitar provides an inventive rhythmic backbone for Terry's harp, and the two voices alternately mesh with, and weave around each other. The two bonus tracks were recorded in New York City, probably in August, 1960.

One of Fitzgerald’s most acclaimed live performances. At this concert in Berlin, Fitzgerald improvised lyrics for “Mack
the Knife” after forgetting the original lyrics. In recognition of this, she received the Best Female Vocal Performance. This
album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. During her Scat solo on ‘How High the Moon’, Fitzgerald quotes
the Charlie Parker composition ’Ornithology’, which is in fact based on the chord changes for ’How High the Moon’, as a
springboard for her own scat improvisation. This recording of ’How High the Moon’ is considered one of Fitzgerald’s best scat
solos, if not one of the best in jazz. “Ella in Hollywood” features several songs that serve as starting points for Ella’s seemingly
effortless scat solos, and a selection of beautiful ballads. This album features Ella at the height of her vocal powers.

“Orfeu Da Conceicao” was originally released as a 10” LP in 1956 and is one of the first releases from
Brazilian’s greatest composer of the twentieth century Antonio Carlos Jobim. “Orfeu Da Conceicao”
was composed in partnership with Vinicius de Moraes featuring Luiz Bonfa on guitar. In 1958, Juscelino
Kubitschek, president of Brazil, asked Vinícius de Moraes and Antônio Carlos Jobim to compose a
symphonic suite to be used at the opening ceremony of a city that was being built in the middle of Brazil
to be the new capital. The result, “Brasilia – Sinfonia da Alvorada” was recorded in 1960. The early works
