Van Spar one of the most amazing bands in the realms of Krautrock – even if the four were inspired equally by techno, synthpop, noise, post- punk and new music. Much is new on "Streetlife". Four of the eight pieces were recorded with the Canadian singer Chris Cummings, aka Marker Starling (formerly Mantler), whose fragile voice recalls that of Robert Wyatt. Other pieces feature the voice of Ada (Pampa Records) and of Scout Niblett (Drag City), for whom Jan Philipp Janzen has played drums on various tours (as he has for the likes of Owen Pallett and The Field). "Streetlife" has emerged as a heterogeneous album ranging from melodic piano disco, to tripped out soundscapes to grandiose soft rock.

The tracks’ calm and clear textures are grounded by urgent, unspecific turbulences, that time and again break through as instances of a ghostly real. As is typical for the band, the masterful and gentle synth arrangements are of an utmost formal rigor without being ostensibly elaborate or pretentious. Unlike on their recent long-play efforts, the band has not collaborated with guest vocalists on »Garzweiler«. A compelling choice, considering the logic of the record: The EP’s sound is devoid of humans—not, however, as a human futuristic vision, along with trite robot, machine, or space-age kitsch, but from the perspective of an already de-settled, or indeed: unsettled reality.

“Streetlife” Remix Edition Number Two: the Cologne-Berlin based band VON SPAR asked again two of their current favourite producers to remix songs from their latest album “Streetlife”, that was released in 2014 and presents a moving amalgam of Disco, Funk, Glam-Pop, Soft- and West Coast-Rock.The first remixe edition came from Barnt and Axel Boman. Now PORTABLE and THE MAGHREBAN have switched on their machines and edited the instrumental track “Ahnherr Der Schwätzer” as well as the song “Try Though We Might” with their very own signature sounds. The native South African PORTABLE transforms the afro-jazz piece „Ahnherr Der Schwätzer“ into a pulsating House-Not-House sensation. As usual, he uses his catchy voice deeply emotional and breathes longing melodies over a cool machine rhythms and drifting synth melodies.A touching remix with a deep psychedelic twist, that also the remix of the Briton The MAGHREBAN delivers. Moreover the mastermind of the label Zoot Records and producer of ghostly electronic dance music has decided to enter the darker sections of his musical universe. In his remix of the catchy pop ballad “Try Though We Might”, the drums beat straight, the bass rolls threateningly, and above all, an alienated guitar theme seduces between an acidified synth lines and bewitching voices. Two remix works with strong knock-on effect.
