For the last decade, Argentina has become the epicenter of a musical explosion that characteristically blends folk music from the surrounding Andes and electronic beats. The artist arguably responsible for its emergence on a global platform is one named Chancha Via Circuito- a Buenos Aires native named Pedro Canale whose first album Rodante (2008) opened the floodgates by pushing the borders of Cumbia listeners weren't even aware existed. He's gone on to release other highly acclaimed albums such as Rio Arriba (2010), which Resident Advisor described as 'aural magical realism', and Amansara (2014), which catapulted him onto acclaimed international stages and received praises from Pitchfork to the New York Times. Four years later, in the midst of some very notable global turbulence, Chancha Via Circuito brings us his highly anticipated new album Bienaventuranza- a word that essentially means bliss. Replete with his signature touches of Andean instruments (think lots of flute and charango), the folkloric elements on this album blend fluidly with danceable and digestible electronic beats. He's been cooking this record slowly, with unprecedented amounts of care and in a much more collaborative manner than his past albums.Appearing on the album are heavy hitters in the digital cumbia scene, including Mateo Kingman, Kaleema, and Lido Pimienta, all of whom contribute their highly distinguishable sounds to the natural flow of the album. Most of these collaborations came about almost effortlessly. La Victoria is a track that blends cumbia, dancehall, and a bit of mysticism- carried by Lido Pimienta's luminous voice, Colombian Dancehall wizard Manu Ranks happened to be in town and slipped into the song naturally. Kawa Kawa came from an improv jam during rehearsal one day with Kaleema (Heidi Lewandowski) and Federico Estevez (percussionist in Chancha Via Circuito). Niño Hermoso, which is lyrically a fable, sounds the way it does because Pedro saw a video of Gianluz (Gianluca Zonzini), who he knows from dance classes, singing a Pocahontas song on Youtube. As dancefloor-friendly as it is mystical, Bienaventuranza is as Chancha as it gets- with elements from Cumbia to Dancehall to Andean Folk to Global house, crystal clear production, and collaborations that are evidently natural and genuine, the record holds true to the sound that Canale has played such a huge part in creating. Since the release of his last album, the digital folk scene has also grown exponentially. From a new generation of producers to more listeners in unassuming parts of the globe, Pedro has been humbled to see the sound develop- and proves with this album that he's grown swiftly alongside it.

New 7" from the mysterious Gitkin, who crisscrossed the US in the late 70s selling knockoff Gibson guitars to the diverse & disparate groups of immigrants from all four corners of the globe who were coming to the US during the 2nd great migration. Recycling and filtering the sounds he encountered through his own psychdelic lens, he created a sound rooted in other, but deeply his own. This single is taken from his forthcoming album, "5 Star Motel" and features two tracks from the album 'Grand Street Feast' which charts a sand-dusted, melodic funk misadventure, while "Cancion Del Rey' has the sound of the Peruvian chicha – steady-moving, alluring, and lyrical – winding its way through Gitkin's fuzz-filtered licks, and the rhythm underpinning.

In the five years following his last solo album Moon People, Nickodemus has continued to spread his global sound through endless DJ tours, recording in studios, and scouting new music for his acclaimed Wonderwheel label. He's made some new friends along the way too, with his constant journeying helping culminate in the new full-length A Long Engagement, a sonic portrait of 25 years of connecting people through music. For Nickodemus, his work has always revolved around the diverse spread of folks he's met with and collaborated during his travels. These experiences date back to the ripe age of 14, when Nicko started playing out his early DJ gigs in New York and throwing parties that spanned sounds and styles from reggae, to house music, hip-hop, and back again. From there were the first Turntables on the Hudson parties in the early 2000s, a string of legendary events that influenced his iconic first album Endangered Species. The Sun People and Moon People series followed in 2009 and 2013, which reflected the organic, sunshine filled music of his sets as well as a shift into the early morning sessions and electronic sounds that were becoming more prevalent in nightlife. All of the above has trickled in one of his most diverse sounding works yet on A Long Engagement. Throughout 13 tracks, Nickodemus reflects on his rich history working in NYC club music and abroad, including some fresher analog sounds, new collaborators, and old friends. Carol C, who sang on cult classics like "Cleopatra in New York" and "Mariposa" appears on the new sexy slow roller "Do You Do You?, a cover of a rare 80s Lebanese funk song. NYC native MCs The Real Live Show lay down another timeless exchange of verses on "Will You Still Be Here." with help from The Pimps of Joytime. Brooklyn-based afro beat band Antibalas appear across three songs on the LP, while Victor Axelrod (Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson) lays down some keys on a cover of the soulful house track "Music Man." The album also includes some rising talents from Argentina's Patagonia region, Fémina, as well as Buenos Aires' own superstar, La Yegros, who both join Nickodemus across interesting fusions of Latin, Arabic, hip-hop, and dub music. You'll also hear Grammy nominated Innov Gnawa on the Moroccan influenced thumping dance-floor version of "Mystic Molay," while Ninja Tune revered vocalist Grey Reverend lends a soulful vocal to album's finale 'Music Man."Like all of Nickodemus' past musical gifts, A Long Engagement is another worldly musical journey that pays homage to the artist's New York City roots while featuring his global vision as a curator and connector of people.
