Annabel (Lee) - The Cleansing

The Cleansing

19,99 €*
Release:2017 / US – Original
A followup to their 2015 debut with Ninja Tune, Richard and Sheila Ellis’ sophomore effort, "The Cleansing," exists in the folds, shaking the categorization of a single genre or label by casting echoes of Billie Holiday and Antonio Carlos Jobim atop opaque shades of Debussy and Edgar Allen Poe. Elements of Jazz and Bossa Nova, accented by striking vocals and enigmatic spoken-word poetry, display a command of the power of contrast. Steady repetitiveness of the instrumentations throughout the record anchor haunting, and often winding, vocal melodies; lyrical themes revolve around both optimistic abstraction and stark reality. These juxtapositions are reinforced by the dual nature of the album itself: Side A, Shades of Reverie, is driven by a sense of hope plucked into existence by embers of acoustic guitar, while Side B, Tones of Clarity, is best defined by dramatic, Bernard Hermann-esque orchestration and soaring vocal performances. While the casual listener may be (understandably) distracted by the graceful marriage between instrumentation and vocal cadence, each song holds its own poetic merit. Singer and lyricist Sheila Ellis’ masterful penmanship develops a crucial dimension to the album, rendering “The Cleansing” a deeply personal, outwardly introspective listen. Spanning thirty-eight minutes over eight compositions, the entire record is a warm, bold stroke on an aural canvas, effortlessly moving through embracing melodies and divine soundscapes.

Brooklyn based avant-garde trio Sontag Shogun collaborates with NYC label Youngbloods to present their newest full-length effort, “Patterns For Resonant Space”. Making use of analog sound treatments and solo piano compositions, Sontag Shogun depicts abstract locations and delicate structures within distant, shared memories. In tonality and design, "Patterns for Resonant Space" soundtracks a solitary journey through old photographs, building and deconstructing each composition in tandem with each narrative. The group’s pianist, Ian Temple, describes the recording process: “This album was an experiment in reverse engineering our normal composition process. We started with sounds and noises, and then I responded to those with piano. We didn't have any piano ideas written before recording day, so I was able to respond in a very pure way to what I heard. With every melodic idea, I aimed to create the most simple possible statement, something succinct and focused to parallel the way that each track is defined by a few very specific sounds. I think we ended up with 20+ short piano ideas recorded in my living room on my childhood upright, and then narrowed it down to the ones that told the best story.” In conjunction with Temple, Jeremy Young and Jesse Perlstein utilized a diverse mosaic of electronic equipment to assemble a textured base throughout the album. Calling on tape loops, signal generators, field recordings, an organ, and a glockenspiel, they explored new terrain at The Pines in Montreal. The duo played sounds through amps, miking each room in different spots to capture their true aural qualities. This method of recording would limit the digital editing process and reflect the uniqueness of that particular space and experience. The result of the group’s experiment is a hazed nostalgia; a collection of 10 compositions passively investigating the caverns and cul de sacs of our shared conscious.

Youngbloods' 13th release is the sophomore album from Dutch producer and vocalist Kratos Himself, "Stay True" on Powder Blue vinyl. As a stunning follow up to 2015's “Loon Garden” and its exploration of the zeal behind new love, “Stay True” soundtracks the producer’s journey from betrayal to the forging of new independence and self love. Opening to a quick descent, Kratos Himself (real name Jethro Hopmans) carefully narrates his transformative ascension, playfully winding through footpaths lined with warm Rhodes piano chords and off-kilter percussive rudiments. In telling his story, Hopmans finds himself the humble servant to a beast larger than himself, and in doing so puts his musical aptitude on display while illuminating the woodland caricatures of contemporaries Caribou, Bonobo, and Shigeto. As if leaving a watermark on a tale bound to outlive him, “Stay True” sees the introduction of Hopmans own voice, most prominently featured on “Heartless” and woven throughout the rest of the album. “Stay True” also sees the return of London's Bev Lee Harling and Hopmans' first collaboration with Toronto Hip-Hop artist and singer Copasetic.
