Matador Records ist ein 1989 von Chris Lombardi in New York City gegründetes, auf Indierock spezialisiertes Plattenlabel. Es ist nicht zu vermessen Matador Records als eines der wichtigsten Independent Labels überhaupt zu bezeichnen. Nicht zuletzt, weil das Who-is-Who des Indierock hier unter Vertrag stand bzw. steht: Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Guided By Voices, Sleater-Kinney, Cat Power, um nur einige zu nennen. Die über 20-jährige Geschichte des Labels ist dann auch facettenreich und kann hier nur skizziert werden. Ein Jahr nachdem Chris Lombardi Matador Records in seinem Appartment in New York City gründete, stieß Gerald Cosloy zu dem Label, der bis dahin Betreiber von Homestead Records, einem anderen einflussreichen Indielabel, war. Beide leiten seitdem das Label gemeinsam. 1994 ging Matador Records eine partnerschaft mit dem Atlantic Records ein, die zu Warner Music gehören. 1996 kaufte Capitol Records 49 Prozent der Anteile von Matador auf, den Lombardi und Cosloy 1999 jedoch zurückkaufen konnten. Seit 2002 gehört Matador nun zur Beggars Group und hat neben dem Sitz in New York auch eine Dependance in London.
