Young Hearts is Benny’s eighth record, but for the first time in his career, the Dutch singer-songwriter has worked with a single producer in the studio for the whole record – beatmaker-to-the-stars Kenny Beats.

Their collaboration began simply with a DM from the producer, which led to a call between the two. Benny instantly felt at ease. “Kenny is so honest that he’s not scared to brag,” he says. Benny explained that he wanted to make a record that sounded bigger than anything he’d done before. “I can give you that extra slap,” Kenny responded without hesitation.

Kenny is the force of nature behind a diverse array of releases from Vince Staples and Freddie Gibbs to Remi Wolf and Denzel Curry, and recently earned a Grammy nod for his work with Idles. It makes sense that the prolific and genre-agnostic producer would find a kindred spirit in Benny, who mines a range of styles from West Coast AOR to ‘70s R&B and hip-hop for his signature sound. They recorded the album in Los Angeles and London.

Im Jahr 1996 entschloss sich der unglaublich talentierte Beatmacher/Produzent/DJ Peanut Butter Wolf zur Gründung des Labels Stones Throw, nachdem er auf der Suche nach einer Plattform zur Veröffentlichung der gemeinsame Aufnahmen mit seinem ‘93 verstorbenen Kumpel MC Charizma bereits an Hollywood Basics (ja, das Label, welches die beiden wegweisenden ersten Alben von Organized Konfusion auf dem Konto hat!) gescheitert war. Das im kalifornischen Los Angeles ansässige Stones Throw begann also mit dem Pressen von 12“es, 7“es und Breakbeats, bevor Ende der 90er dank großartiger Alben von Peanut Butter Wolf und Lootpack der endgültige Durchbruch gelang. Weitere Werke von Quasimoto, Breakestra, Yesterdays New Quintet und die fantastische Funk-Compilation “The Funky 16 Corners” manifestierten schnell den Status als wichtigstes Independent-Label der Westküste, nicht zuletzt dank des enormen kreativen Inputs von Lootpack-Mitglied Madlib, der ungefähr Dreiviertel aller ST-Releases produziert und selbst unter verschiedenen Dechnamen ca. 40% des Label Roosters darstellt. Durch seine unvergleichliche Arbeitsethik und PBW’s Feingefühl für Promotion, Präsentation und Marketing ist aus Stones Throw bis heute die wohl einflussreichste unabhängige Musikplattform des Hip-Hop geworden, deren Stellung in etwa mit der der legendären Plattenfirma Stax in den 60ern und 70ern zu vergleichen ist. Dazu gehört selbstverständlich auch eine coole Apparel-Linie, die perfekt aufs Musikprogramm abgestimmt ist.
