Despite being the offspring of an architect and a chemical engineer, Ayjay Nils and his four siblings starting playing musical instruments at a very early age. Ayjay had a viola put in his hand and he’s been playing it ever since. In 2007, while enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, he began writing hip-hop beats that sampled classical music, while also composing “classical” music itself. In 2015, Ayjay joined the Berliner Philharmoniker (where he is still a fixed member). In his first five years in Berlin, Ayjay put his creative activities on pause to make way for his new job and family. But eventually his impulse to make music began to remanifest itself. Ayjay hoarded synthesizers and drum machines, sampled his children’s annoying electronic toys, and resumed composing at the piano. His influences are too much of a hot mess to glean from merely listening, but they range from eastern European and Middle-Eastern folk music; MF Doom; Henry Miller; Louie Barletta; the biographies of the great composers; the Sopranos; and crucially —the 1990s Chicago Bulls.

Dead Broke Rekerds is absolutely stoked to announce definitive reissues by Berkeley, California-based punk band, Fifteen. From the ashes of east bay legends, Crimpshrine, came Fifteen. These records changed our lives (here at Dead Broke) and the socially conscious lyrics touched & taught us in ways music would seldom again throughout the years. Fifteen formed in 1988 during the tail end of a Crimpshrine tour. After Crimpshrine broke up, Fifteen started playing shows. Fifteen embarked on their first tour in the summer of 1989, and recorded their debut s/t EP in April 1990 for Lookout! Records. Fifteen went on their first US tour in the summer of 1990, playing shows with Filth & Fugazi. They released their first album ("Swain's First Bike Ride") in 1991 on Lookout!. In summer of 1992, the band toured the US & Canada, and recorded their second album, "The Choice of A New Generation". Originally released on Cd/lp in 1992 on Lookout! Records. The band saw a line-up change with this album, featuring Lucky Dog (rip) on bass guitar. We've meticulously kept these reissues as true to the original releases as we possibly could, while the songs have taken on a new life with a 2017 remastering. Gloriously restored & remastered from the original reel-to-reel master tapes by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering. Featuring cover art in full color for the very first time! Replicating exact original collage art, made by Lucky Dog!

Within the one-year span of February 2019 to February 2020, Boston’s Nat Freedberg (Flies, Titanics, Upper Crust) released two solo records on the Rum Bar Record label, plus a third one, entitled “Freeloader: The Path of Least Resistance,” with Boston rock titans Jim Janota (drums), Jim Haggerty (bass) and Charles Hansen (guitar). Over the last pandemic year, while loafing around at home, Nat found himself idly accumulating another Freeloader album’s-worth of rockers. These guys redefine the meaning of the word "old," and belong to that class of ossified musical objects that can only be identified by radiocarbon dating. Nat, the oldest and probably most decrepit, has been a pallid, furtive habitué of the Boston music scene since the early '80s. His previous bands were the Flies, the Titanics, the Satanics, the Clamdiggers, and the Upper Crust. Janota is widely admired as the best rock drummer in Boston, a distinction which has done absolutely nothing for him in the way of tangible reward. Likewise, Haggerty is in great demand on the Boston circuit, holding down the bass in multiple bands while the front-people warble on earnestly about whatever they believe to be interesting and important. Hansen is a world-class guitarist, teaches at Berklee, and plays in several bands, but he too could only loosely be termed a billionaire.

Over two years in the making, and it’s finally here. Amsterdam based, brand new old-school label “Betonska” kicks off with this highly diverse release for the selector, collector, radio host and club DJ. Crisp instrumentation, tight retro drum computer programming and propulsive danceable bass lines are what you will find here. The Amsterdam based label will be focusing on previously unreleased and tough-to-find material from the 80s and 90s – all re-mastered, officially licensed and in collaboration with the original artist. In addition to the original material an occasional modern twist will be given by contemporary artists who cherish that signature sound. The first release is an alternative issue of Flo Sullivan’s “Higher” release, originally recorded in 1984 in the world famous Amazon Studios in Liverpool and released in 1985. On the A-side both the 12” and the 7” version of the hard-to-get, firm synth-pop track “Higher” will be pressed on a loud 45rpm vinyl. The 12” version is the (bass-)heavier one, while the 7” version sounds more “organic” with an extended intro and an added horns part. The tracks on the A-side have been pressed before and are made available now again for the wider public, giving those tracks the recognition and attention they deserve. The B-side focuses on previously unreleased original downtempo material by the same artist but released under her real name: Gayna Rose Madder. This, accompanied by a refreshing club-ready remix of one of those tracks by Vienna’s top-notch selector, producer and Neubau label owner: Heap. Neither of the two original tracks “Over” and “Element” have ever been released on vinyl before, up until now. “Over” was written and recorded in 1983 in Splash Sound Studios in Liverpool. A beautiful melancholic synth-pop track, which was meant to be released, but unfortunately never saw the light of day. At the time it was recorded Gayna left her band “Shiny Two Shiny” and therefore needed a new deal from a different company for her solo releases. But by the time she found the right one, many newer songs needed release. Much later, in 2005, Gayna decided to self-release “Over” on a compilation CD to sell copies online. “Element” is a spoken-word poem accompanied by a fire-crackling tribal kind of rhythm. It was written for a musical play and recorded in Sparks Studio Liverpool in 2004 and has never officially been released before. (For a short period it was available on a self-released CD on Gayna’s website; a compilation of the songs written for one of her musicals). And last but not least, the icing on the cake is Heap’s remix of “Element”. He translated this spoken word poem into a refreshing 90s-style and danceable club-track to complete the diversity of Betonska’s first release. A chugging acid bass, breakbeat rhythms, crisp claps and sharp snares and a screeching lead synth to get you screaming on the dance floor.

The project has its roots in Kris Clayton‘s long-standing, often-solo, Camel Of Doom outfit, which itself evolved from basic Stoner beginnings towards a much more avant-garde proposal, culminating with the release of fourth full-length album Terrestrial through renowned Russian label Solitude Productions in 2016. The EP’s five songs successfully translate the fever dream of Golden Donna’s sweaty, spiraling live performances into vividly deliberate multi-tracked compositions: accelerated but exacting, explosively precision-mapped, achieved via method, madness, and “arranging the fuck out of tracks.” The title took root a few years back, during a heightened window of “personal hells and ugly changes,” consumed by a sense of being at the threshold to nowhere, frustrated and futureless. This is music of emotional exorcism and rhythmic liberation, embracing challenge and change within and without.

A lovely surprise here by Luca Duran (aka Look Like) who is following up a series of stellar EPs with his first solo album. He embarks on a wide-ranging electronic journey throughout 'Libertas', an intrepid sonic exploration of the concepts of freedom and independence, two hallmarks of his already diverse studio work. The uncategorizable Swiss-Colombian producer is releasing his debut album after a period of creative metamorphosis, during which Duran's musical output evolved from the dextrous house, techno & electro of earlier releases under his original production moniker Look Like. From summer 2019, Luca began releasing solely under his own name and his style has now grown beyond the traditional dancefloor genres of electronic music to encompass influences from post-punk and IDM. Seeking to sonically explore and reflect on concepts of liberty and autonomy, Duran, like all of us, was soon faced with a lockdown of a very different kind. The result is 'Libertas', an extraordinary album written and produced across 2020 and under equally extraordinary, world-changing circumstances. Engrossing, imaginative and political in the tradition of electronic music's innovators, 'Libertas' mixes Latin philosophy and futurist techniques in order to create something distinct, future-facing and never less than thoughtful.
