Wenn eine Band in den letzten 10 Jahren von ihrer immensen Kreativität und ihrer Rastlosigkeit getrieben war, dann ja wohl die Parquet Courts! Die Discographie des Brooklyner Quartetts ist so vielseitig, wie hochkarätig – und dem steht auch ihr neues, am 22. Oktober via Rough Trade Records erscheinendes Album „Sympathy For Life“ in Nichts nach! Denn hier tanzt der sich immer im Wandel befindliche Rock-Bastard zu einem neuen Beat! Das Album entstand dabei hauptsächlich durch improvisierte Jam-Sessions, die wiederum von der New Yorker-Club-Szene, Primal Scream wie Pink Floyd inspiriert wurden und dann mit den beiden Produzenten-Schwergewichten Rodaidh MacDonald (The xx, Hot Chip, David Byrne) und John Parish (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding, Dry Cleaning) in die finale Form geschliffen wurde. Im Gegensatz zum international gefeierten (und von Danger Mouse produzierten) Vorgänger „Wide Awake!“ (2018) fokussierte sich die Band beim neuen Album eher auf die Grooves als auf den Rhythmus. “Wide Awake! was a record you could put on at a party,” sagt Co-Frontmann Austin Brown darüber. “Sympathy For Life is influenced by the party itself. Historically, some amazing rock records have been made from mingling in dance music culture – from Talking Heads to Screamadelica. Our goal was to bring that into our own music. Each of us, in our personal lives, has been going to more dance parties. Or rather, we were pre-pandemic, which is when this record was made.” Mit dem neuen Album kündigen die Parquet Courts mit „The Power of Eleven“ auch ganze 11 globale Happenings um die Veröffentlichung von „Sympathy For Life“ an – jedes Event ist dazu auch noch mit einem exklusiven Merch-Produkt verbunden, das es nur bei dem jeweiligen Event gibt. Beispiel gefällig? Letzte Woche zog die Gay & Lesbian Big Apple Corp Marching Band durch Downtown Manhatten und präsentierte die erste Single „Walking At A Downtown Pace“ – vor Ort konnten Fans exklusive Parquet Courts Drum Sticks erstehen. Zur Single „Walking At A Downtown Place” erscheint gleichzeitig ein Video vom renommierten New Yorker Straßen-Fotografen Daniel Arnold – Co-Frontmann A Savage sagt darüber: „We see New York City from the vantage point of someone busily hurrying through it… That’s what life can be like here; a world of constant motion surrounds you while you’re just walking toward where you need to be. There’s a lot of beauty that can be missed, and it wasn’t until the streets were virtually empty that I did miss it. The song was written before all quarantine, but eerily enough the lyrics echo that longing. Now the city is back and, so it seems, are Parquet Courts."
