When it first appeared in 1986, the Desert Equations: Azax Attra album was greeted with enthusiasm, awe and disbelief: nobody had done anything quite like that before, and this dizzying, inspired blend of Persian tradition, New York avant-garde and electronic music remains incomparable, powerful and mesmerising to this day. Combining the sublime voice of Iranian vocalist Deyhim and the electronic wizardry of US composer Horowitz, this haunting and futuristic album prompted writer Paul Bowles to wonder: "Was this composed under the influence of Majoun?", and convinced filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci to entrust the soundtrack music for his Sheltering Sky movie to Richard Horowitz (which earned him a Golden Globe). Desert Equations wonderfully blends the duo's multiple sources, including their experiences at the epicentre of New York's early 80s avantgarde music and theatre scene, Sussan Deyhim's knowledge of traditional Persian music and its reverberation in modern Iranian arts, and Richard Horowitz's background in jazz, electronics and Moroccan folk music.This 2021 remastered reissue includes three previously-unreleased bonus tracks, and a rich booklet with photographs and notes recounting the duo's fascinating life stories.Sussan Deyhim went on to work with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Jah Wobble, Bobby McFerrin, Adrian Sherwood, Ornette Coleman, and renowned visual artist Shirin Neshat. Richard Horowitz collaborated with Jaron Lanier, Hassan Hakmoun, David Byrne, was the original artistic director of the Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira, and wrote & recorded film soundtracks for Oliver Stone a.o. In April 2021, Deyhim and Horowitz have performed at the Nobel Prize Summit.

Segundo wurde zuerst in Argentinien veröffentlicht, landete durch einen Zufall in Japan, wurde schließlich 2003 von Domino Records herausgebracht und begründete ihre Karriere mit bis dato fünf weiteren Studioalben, dem Live-Album ANRMAL sowie Tourneen in der ganzen Welt.

Die französische Avant-Rock-Band Aquaserge ließ schon immer Genregrenzen verschwimmen. Für die Ausgabe 46 der "Made To Measure"-Reihe widmet sie sich auf The Possibility Of A New Work For Aquaserge der zeitgenössischen klassischen Musik ab Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts: Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988), György Ligeti (1923-2006), Edgard Varèse (1883-1965) und Morton Feldman (1926-1987).Inspiriert von den unterschiedlichen Ansätzen der vier Komponisten in puncto Dynamik, Klangtextur und Länge der Stücke oder genauer gesagt, Scelsis Forschung über Klangfarbe und Schwingungen, Ligetis Cluster, Varèses melodischer Kubismus und Feldmans graphische Notation, ging die Band das Album intuitiv wie auch methodisch in einem auf neun Musiker*innen erweiterten Line-Up an. Das Album enthält zum einen drei langsame, ausgedehnt-weitläufige Stücke, in denen die Klangfarben der Instrumente miteinander zu einer klanglichen Materie verschmelzen. Diese Materie ist gleichzeitig immobil und mobil, wie in einigen Ligeti- oder Scelsi-Werken. Dagegen enthalten die Hommagen der Band an Varèse und Feldman Momente des Ausbruchs und wilder Improvisation. Diese von Aquaserge geschriebenen Kompositionen, werden mit raren Stücken von Edgard Varèse, eines davon auf Basis eines Gedichts von Verlaine. sowie von Morton Feldman mit einem Rilke-Text komplettiert, und zeigen das Gespür der Band für Melodien.

The Chilean/French duet are known for their hypnotic music which incorporates eerie sounds generated by raw and mineral materials (metal, rocks etc) to create tracks that are in turn hyper-rhythmic and dreamy, poised between postpunk rock and electronic dance music. The band have also been very active in the field of multimedia & performance arts, and Xpujil explores that other dimension of their talent.Released on Crammed's revered MADE TO MEASURE series (which is dedicated to experimental, minimal & ambient music), Xpujil consists of a single 40-minute track, which draws the listener into an aural, immersive experience. Based on sounds recorded by Nova Materia during a trip in the Mexican jungle, in Maya territory (Xpujil is the name of an old Mayan city, now lost in the middle of the forest), the album was then produced in the band's Parisian studio, and features contribution by electronic musician/drummer Ikue Mori (of DNA fame) and cellist Gaspar Claus. The album was mixed in binaural, and is best enjoyed on headphones. Nova Materia will be performing Xpujil in appropriate settings (museums, performance arts spaces), with multichannel immersive sound systems. Nova Materia are Caroline Chaspoul and Eduardo Henriquez, formerly with Panico, the alternative rock band they had created in Chile, with which they toured around the globe and released several albums.

Yet this orchestral suite originally released in 1985 showcases some of Zazou's most exquisite compositional work, fusing a chamber ensemble, some classical and pop vocals, unorthodox production, and an ironical, affectionate take on early 20th century classics (think Satie et al). The loose idea behind the title of the series was: this is music which has been or could have been "made to measure" as a soundtrack for other media (film, theatre, dance, video).We'll also be rolling out selected vinyl reissues of some of the series' classic early releases, starting with the inaugural volume, MADE TO MEASURE VOL. 1, the multi-artist album from 1984, containing music created by Minimal Compact, Benjamin Lew, Aksak Maboul and Tuxedomoon for films, theatre plays and dance performances.

35 Jahre nach Erscheinen von Zazou Bikayes zweitem Album Mr. Manager bringt das Label Crammed Discs eine um neun Stücke erweiterte, neu gemasterte Special Edition des Klassikers. Sechs Tracks davon sind bislang unveröffentlicht, drei gab es bis dato nur auf Limited-Edition-Singles. Nachdem der französische Musiker und Produzent Hector Zazou, der Sänger und Komponist Bony Bikaye und der Modular-Synth-Zauberer CY1 für die afro-elektronischen Experimente auf dem 1983 erschienenen, wegweisenden Album Noir et Blanc zusammengekommen waren, wurde aus Zazou Bikaye 1984 eine richtige Band mit eigener Herangehensweise an Afrobeat und Afrofunk.Hector Zazou schrieb und programmierte die Musik und Bony Bikaye erweiterte die extrovertierteren Seiten seiner Stimme. Die beiden nahmen viele neue Stücke auf, von denen letztlich fünf in Form des 32-minütigen Minialbums Mr. Manager erschienen. Es war ausschließlich auf Vinyl über Europa hinaus auch in den USA auf Mark Kamins' Pow Wow-Label sowie in Japan erhältlich.Auf der Vinyl-Version gibt es acht Stücke plus Download-Card für alle vierzehn Tracks; die CD- und Digitalversionen enthalten alle vierzehn Stücke.

ANRMAL ist Juana Molinas erstes Livealbum auf ihrem langen Karriereweg. Durch das kraftvolle Set zieht sich ein so mitreißender Punkrock-Vibe, dass er uns auf bessere Zeiten hoffen lässt.Als Juana Molina vor mehr als zwei Dekaden als Musikerin startete, waren ihre Kompositionen eher reflektiert und auf das Wesentliche reduziert. Zumeist spielte sie Solokonzerte mit ihrer Gitarre, einem Keyboard und Effektgeräten. Über die Jahre wurden ihre Konzerte immer wilder und ihre Platten immer intensiver und extrovertierter, was bei den Tourneen zu ihren letzten Alben zu erleben war.Auf dem am 23.10.2020 erscheinenden ANRML wird Juana Molina von ihren Bandkollegen Odin Schwartz am Bass und Pablo González am Schlagzeug begleitet, die eine Extraportion Energie zum Auftritt beitragen. Das Set enthält Stücke aus Juanas letzten Alben Halo, Wed 21 sowie der Wiederveröffentlichung Un día und der EP "Forfun", alle erschienen bei Crammed Discs. Im März 2017 veröffentlichte die libanesische Sängerin und Songwriterin Yasmine Hamdan ihr mit Spannung
erwartetes zweite Soloalbum "Al Jamilat" (dt.: "Die Schönen"). Bei diesem unterstützten sie hochkarätige
Produzenten und Musiker. Als Koproduzenten waren Luke Smith (Depeche Mode, Lily Allen, Foals) und Leo
Abrahams (Brian Eno, Carl Barat) tätig, bei den Aufnahmen wirkten unter anderem Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie
Anderson, Lou Reed) und Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) mit. Während Yasmines Stimme klar die Traditionen
der arabischen Musik mit einem unkonventionellen und frischen Ansatz wiederspiegelte, waren die Strukturen
und Arrangements der Stücke weit von deren Wurzeln entfernt und bedienten sich an zeitgenössischer
westlicher Elektronik, Pop und Folk. Eine Mischung, die bei Publikum und Kritik sehr gut ankam und nun,
rund ein Jahr später, zu einer Platte mit insgesamt neun Remixen führte. Die stammen von so
unterschiedlichen Acts wie der Pariser Electro-Crew Acid Arab, dem chilenischen Dancefloor-Experten Matias
Aguayo oder dem deutschen Techno-Künstler Shed. Weitere Arbeiten steuerten das Berliner Ensemble
Brandt Brauer Frick, Greg Bauchau von Crammed, Cubenx aus Mexiko, die Griechin Olga Kouklaki George
Bshoum, ein Produzent aus dem Nahen Osten, und die Gesangsikone selbst bei.

Wer den immens druckvollen Live-Sound der französischen Experimental-Popband Aquaserge schon einmal
selbst erlebt hat, wird das bei Konzerten in den Jahren 2016/17 mitgeschnittene Album "Déjà-vous?" zu
schätzen wissen. Das Besondere daran: Die fünf Kern-Bandmitglieder wurden von einer dreiköpfigen
Bläsersektion unterstützt, und das gibt dem von französischer Filmmusik, Psych-Rock und Free Jazz
beeinflussten Sound einen noch jazzigeren Anklang. 2016 entstanden die Aufnahmen während einer kurzen
Tournee, 2017 bei einem Benefizkonzert für die "Tarnac-Gruppe" in Montreuil. Bei diesem Konzert sprang die
bekannte Flötistin Sylvaine Hélary für den normalerweise mit Aquaserge tourenden Tenorsaxophonisten
Robin Fincker ein. "Déjà-vous?" enthält acht Liveversionen von Aquaserge-Stücken, vier davon stammen
vom letzten Studioalbum "Laisse ça être", drei aus früheren Alben. Als besonderen Bonus gibt es eine
Impromptu-Liveversion des Klassikers "My Funny Valentine". Die meisten Stücke sind für den Anlass neu

"Noir et Blanc" entstand 1983 in Brüssel als Zusammenarbeit der experimentellen Komponisten Guillaume
Loizillon und Claude Micheli unter ihrem Pseudonym CY1, des kongolesischen Musikers und Sängers Bony
Bikaye sowie des bekannten französischen Komponisten Hector Zazou. Weiterhin waren an den Aufnahmen
Marc Hollander, seines Zeichens Mastermind der Avantgarde-Formation Aksak Maboul und Crammed-Discs-
Labelgründer, Fred Frith, die beiden Honeymoon Killers Véronique Vincent und JF Jones Jacob III sowie
Vincent Kenis, der später als Produzent der "Congotronics"-Reihe bekannt wurde, beteiligt. Sie schufen einen
Afro-Electro-Meilenstein, den der "Melody Maker" in seinem Erscheinungsjahr mit den Worten "One of the
most innovative LPs of the year. Resembles the startling outcome of an imaginary collaboration between DAF
and Fela Kuti" kommentierte. Für die Nachpressung des Vinyls wurden die Songs neu von den originalen
Analogbändern gemastert und um ein Booklet mit Texten der Beteiligten ergänzt. Abgerundet wird die
Wiederveröffentlichung durch einen Downloadcode für fünf bislang unveröffentlichte Demos sowie drei
Original-Remixe aus dem Jahr 1984.
