Byrd's Eye View" wurde 1955 für Tom Wilsons Label Transition aufgenommen und war das erste von Donald Byrds als Bandleader veröffentlichte Album. Shimmering percussion, wind instruments and electric piano and guitar set the backdrop for Byrd's dramatic flight into a psychedelic space with his echo-laden trumpet blasts. The album ends on a rollocking funk featuring his full band that foreshadows the gold he would soon mine with the Mizell Brothers on his string of hit records recorded shortly after. Die Erstveröffentlichung einer legendären Blue-Note-Liveaufnahme, auf die Fans seit Jahrzehnten warten!

Im Juli 1973 reiste Blue Note Records nach Montreux, um einige der Stars des Labels beim legendären Montreux Jazz Festival zu präsentieren. Produziert vom damaligen Blue Note-Präsident George Butler folgte eine Reihe von Live-Alben unter dem Titel „Live: Cookin' with Blue Note at Montreux“, vertreten waren Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, Organist Ronnie Foster, Flötistin Bobbi Humphrey und Sängerin Marlena Shaw. Warum der großartige Mitschnitt von Trompeter Donald Byrd bis jetzt unveröffentlicht im Archiv liegen blieb, kann sich heute niemand mehr erklären.



Am 90. Geburtstag Donald Byrds schließt Blue Note jetzt diese Kataloglücke mit der Veröffentlichung eines energetischen, mitreißenden Konzertes des Künstlers.

ach mehr als einem Dutzend Alben im Rahmen seiner Blue-Note-Tätigkeit war Donald Byrds Slow Drag von 1967 eine der letzten reinen Hard-Bop-Sessions, die der zuverlässig brillante Trompeter aufnahm, bevor sich seine Musik in Richtung Fusion entwickelte.

Das Album beginnt mit dem Titeltrack, einem unterhaltsamen 10-Minuten-Groovefest. "Secret Love", ein Hit der 1950er Jahre für Doris Day, wird zu einem modalen Jazzstück, das leicht in einen fröhlichen Swing übergeht, bevor Bassist Walter Booker und Pianist Cedar Waltons "Book's Bossa" einen Bossa Nova-Flair in das Geschehen bringen. Saxophonist Sonny Reds beschwingte Boogaloo-Nummer "Jelly Roll" hebt die Energie zu Beginn von Seite 2, gefolgt von Waltons gefühlvollem Jazz-Walzer "The Loner". Das Album endet mit der Ballade "My Ideal", die Byrds schillernde Melodik unter Beweis stellt.
