And since then, life just gets increasingly better. . .Rain On Lens was the first of three records to be released with the brackets - a chiaroscuro-draped passage between Dongs of Sevotion and Supper, if you will. Rife with the further adventures and evolution in the Callahanian tongue that continue to dazzle the world everytime he makes another new one. And always with at least one classic ballad (here it's "Live As If Someone Is Always Watching You"- but imagine "Keep Some Steady Friends Around" with just a guitar backing it! Total melter), the unblinking-yet-compassionate character study ("Lazy Rain"), a masterful comic vignette ("Short Drive"), and the through-the-looking-glass set closer ("Revanchism"). Ambarchi, Berthling and Werliin share a fascination with rhythm and the myriad of ways it can subdivide within the beat. Using aspects of jazz, world and experimental musics, each tune settles into a deep groove, digging itself via continuous minimal adjustments into an ever-deeper, eternal groove.The music of Ghosted exists in the intention of a shared moment of playing, a clearly delineated time, put forth with a steady flow of small details on bass, guitar and drums, in a remarkable display of rhythmic flexibility within a minimal framework.Rooting in the rich tonality and repeating figures of Johan's acoustic (and sometimes electric) bass, the four tracks that make up Ghosted act as variations on a theme, unspooling continuously over the course of 39 minutes with the terse flow of krautrock jams - closely observed percussive riffs and repetitions that build continuously with subtle shifts as they move forward, with the small details flying expansively in and out across the stereo spectrum. Oren's guitar often sounds with an organ-like tone, with notes of fire and glass wafting out over the percolation and permutation in Johan and Andreas' rhythms. These men have been playing long enough to, without any real words, shape their improvisations with short and long term goals. Performances that day ranged from almost five minutes to almost sixteen. With an eye toward further expansion, they'd invited the legendary Swedish reed player Christer Bothén, whose knowledge of the guimbri and donso n'goni was incisively shared with the great Don Cherry some fifty years ago. Christer plays donso n'goni on the first track, and his parts sync like cogs in a watch, revolving in fluid coordination with Oren, Johan and Andreas.Mixed and mastered by Joe Talia at Good Mixture, Berlin, Ghosted highlights the intimate dialogue between players, as well as the careful curation of space between them. It is rare to think of silence in relation to music where everyone is constantly playing.

Far View is a compilation of tracks from Joel Vandroogenbroeck's series of library music releases for the Coloursound label - a uniquely trippy catalog of music vignettes long overdue for their day in the library music sun, remastered from the original analog reels!The late Joel Vandroogenbroeck was among that rare breed of musician who defy all categorization, using music conventions to explore the far reaches of human and cosmic consciousness. After passing through the jazz and rock worlds from the 1950s through the 70s, Joel found new outlets for his expansive vision in the 80s with the Swiss library music label Coloursound. Far View draws tracks from these releases, which form a unique entry in the genre of library music. For the uninitiated, this is just one way to begin a brilliant musical trip through Vandroogenbroeck's undersung career.A musical prodigy from youth, Joel arrived at Brussels' classical Music Conservatory in the early 50s, but his studies were curtailed by the revelation of jazz. Soon, Joel was touring in groups around Europe and beyond with luminaries like Eje Thelin, Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer and Zoot Sims. As time passed, his musical consciousness continued to expand: time spent in Africa sparked a deep exploration of the music of the Middle East. The new rock sounds from England, like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, were mind-blowing. And from Germany came the krautrockers, with something completely else again.Vibing on the eclectic energies of the day, Vandroogenbroeck formed Brainticket, whose approach to composition fused jazz, rock, and a mélange of global musical traditions, combining a western rhythm section and analog synthesizers with an astonishing array of acoustic instruments; ethnic flutes, sitar, harp, kalimba and all manner of percussion. Nuno Canavarro's Plux Quba hails from three decades in the past, yet the simple profi le of it's abstract/ambient/cutup collage makes it a record that sits quite comfortably in our IDM-informed future.In 1988, Plux Quba was a primal dark horse in the world of pants-forward electronic music - an obscurity issued with little explanation from the laid-back west coast of Europe: Portugal, of all places! - though the casual listener could hardly know that from an examination of the LP jacket.The vanguard of electronics in late-80s Europe was being pushed by organizations like Nurse With Wound, The Hafler Trio, HNAS - and yet, when Christoph Heemann came across this recording, it struck his ears and the ears of fellow listeners like nothing before. Plux Quba was handed around between the principles of the early 90s A-Musik scene: Jan St. Werner, C-Schulz, Frank Dommert, Georg Odijk, plus interested fellow travelers like Jim O'Rourke, to the intense curiosity of all. To ears that were already saturated with all things kraut, the dark corners of prog and the frontline of experimental and improvised music, it proved elusive. Not simply in how it sounded and how that sound was achieved, but in where it was coming from - like later Robert Ashley at times; certain stretches of melody recalled some of Eno's ambient pieces - but mostly, it was a completely alien soundscape!

40-plus years since its original release, the pop-punk-new wave inventions of Anthony Moore's Flying Doesn't Help are freshly remastered, blasting the sparkling, angular sounds into today with perfect vitality.After spending the early years of the 70s making experimental music first as a solo artist, then with Slapp Happy and Henry Cow, 1976's OUT sessions had reinvigorated Anthony's youthful love of the naive pop melodies of pop radio, the undeniable excitement of songs. While OUT ultimately went unreleased at the time, the iconoclasm clouding the late '70s air was addictive and transformative for Anthony. England seemed to be roiled as violently as it had been in counter-cultural days a decade earlier; the UK pop charts breathlessly reflected the changing spectrum with equal parts aging hippie and prog delicacies alongside new ascendant sounds: rough-hewn pub and punk rock, plus dub reggae and disco and ska and Stiff and Krautrock. . . . This proved to be an ideal environment for Anthony to make records by exploring, as he puts it, the "deep connection between minimalism, repetition, working with tape and celluloid and forming the modules of a three minute pop song."Caught up in a no-holds-barred era, Anthony was more than happy to play the out-of-his-head madman, raving through outrageous exchanges with the press, while "Judy Get Down" received Single of the Week honors from the NME (with review penned by Brian Eno). Represented by Blackhill Enterprises, Anthony did production work throughout '78-'79, on Kevin Ayers' Rainbow Takeaway, Manfred Mann's Earth Band's Angel Station and the first This Heat album, meanwhile cutting his own songs on a dead time deal at Workhouse Studio with engineer/producer Laurie Latham. Through the wee hours of countless nights, the two pieced together Flying Doesn't Help, with a little help from friends (an inspired bunch, including Bob Shilling, Charles Hayward, Chris Slade, Robert Vogel, Festus, Matt Irving, Sam Harley, Bernie Clark, Edwin Cross and Martine Moore on...

Harmonizer is a glossy, barely-precedented sound for him, and truth, it enraptures the ear - but in Ty's hands, the sound is also a tool that allows him to cut through dense undergrowth, making for some of his cleanest songs and starkest ideas to date. Harmonizer's production model couches tightly-controlled beats in thick keyboard textures, with direct-input guitar signal whining and buzzing purposefully from left to right. The Freedom Band appear all over the record, but often one at a time, their contributions leaving a distinctive footprint on the proceedings wherever they appear. Operating in this airtight environment with an eye towards precision, feel, and explosive mass, Ty's crafted a formidable listening encounter - and once you get between the lines, the need to know more grows more compelling with every song.The thing about closed doors is they need opening again, no matter what happens. Rock and roll was a relief after the rigour of Henry Cow. That was one of the thoughts in Anthony Moore's brain in late 1975. Of course, leaving Henry Cow had meant the dissolution of the band he'd founded, Slapp Happy, as the two groups had essentially merged over the previous year. Still, there was plenty yet to do with music, and with Anthony's propensity for odd left turns, a solo career in the pop world seemed like a fine option to follow upon his adventure in soundtracks for experimental films, tape-based modern composition and avant-pop and experimental rock. For "the troubadour with Revoxes", this venture into playing guitar and singing in a professional context was a new thing. To access the pop life, Anthony signed a solo deal with Virgin - cutting sessions with producer Peter Jenner (Kevin Ayers, Roy Harper, Edgar Broughton Band) and some of Britain's new generation of progressive musicians facilities like Abbey Road, Air and Richard Branson's Oxfordshire getaway, The Manor. While the stars didn't align back in the day (the fantastic sounds recorded for OUT didn't see release until a CD issue of the late 1990s), we're finally making those historic recordings on vinyl with the long-lost original artwork restored. Kicking it off with a tricky asymmetrical keyboard riff reminiscent of Eno's Tiger Mountain phase and a belting Cale-esque vocal recounting the macho adventure narrative tone of that era's Dylan and Roger McGuinn, "Stitch In Time" floats essential elements of the mid-70s British art-rock boom with dreamy pop effervescence.It's been worth the 44-year (!) wait to get Anthony's full vision restored to OUT - an absolute lost chapter from mid-70s, proto-new wave Britain, bringing to mind the bright and subversive sounds of Wyatt, Ayers and so many other trail-blazers from that time while providing a worthy precursor to Anthony's celebrated 1979 LP, Flying Won't Help. A fantastic joy to the ears!

A long era of dull ringing and nothing else in our ears is over. Once again, winds of warm guitar and humid thunderheads of bass and toms rumble all around. With Valdez, Birds of Maya are back in flight. And like the first song title explicitly states, this latest is a soaring blast of riffers, rife with punk rock abandon, sludge, treble, distortion, neck-throttling rock n roll solos, pummeling drums and bass and half-shouted/half-gargled vocals, all of it half on and half off the mic. For the good times as always, these Birds! That's how they've done it: fast and heavy, hard, live and loose, amid accumulating piles of empties, in appropriately informal environments since 2004ish, with their three LPs (on Holy Mountain, Richie and Little Big Chief) ripping us up whenever they drop. With each release, our thirst has increased, but to our horror, we haven't found any fresh feathers from their tree in the new release bins since 2013. Somewhere in Philadelphia, Jason Killinger, Ben Leaphart and Mike Polizze played on - preferably outside (the shows are always extra-good), but wherever, really. Recorded in 2014 at Black Dirt Studios in New York. Yeah: Birds of Maya packed up their shit, drove out of North Philly to a recording studio hundreds of miles away and made an album. Kinda nuts. And then didn't release it until...well, yeah - now! Time is a test that Birds of Maya recordings need to pass before they see the light of day. At the time this was recorded, Birds of Maya were standing on the other side of ten years kicking around town, suddenly far away from the primordial ooze they'd flopped forth from. The streets where all this had happened on were changing, with new money rolling in, but they were the same old Birds, content with their libations and ear-splitting variations on old favorite Stooges chords.
