Elvin Jones, one of the true great drummers in jazz, recorded this album in 1971 after having led his own band for several years following his immortal work with the John Coltrane Quartet. This unique recording has a spacious feel with plenty of room for the players to work out the melodic compositions created by the members of the group. At times the recording creates an almost cinematic space, yet always propelling forward into unexpected territory. No pandering to contemporary tastes at this date or following the trends of the time, this is simply a great example of mature musicians given the freedom to create their own vision and place in time. Die bislang unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen, die jetzt als „Revival: Live at Pookie's Pub” herauskommen, zeigen Jones‘ Neufindung als Leader zwei Wochen nach Coltranes Tod, live aufgenommen im Juli 1967 in New York City zusammen mit Saxofonist Joe Farrell, Pianist Billy Greene und Bassist Wilbur Little. Das Deluxe-180g-3-LP-Set enthält ein Booklet mit Fotos von Francis Wolff u.a., sowie Essays vom GRAMMY-ausgezeichneten Autor Ashley Kahn, den Produzenten Zev Feldman und Don Was, Toningenieur Bob Falesch u.v.a.

Es war schon eine ungewöhnliche Besetzung, die mit Elvin Jones, dem damals legendären Ex-Coltrane-Quartet Drummer, im März 1966 in die New York Atlantic Studio ging: Bruder Thad an der Trompete war erste Wahl, aber Dollar Brand am Klavier, Don Moore am Bass und Hank Mobley, stets als 2. Wahl hinter Coltrane eingeordnet? Jedoch wie stets: Der impulsive, knallharte Beat des grandiosen, variantenreichen Elvin trieb die Musiker vor sich her und zu ungeahnter Klasse. Wenn er ins Studio lud, war Power allererste Pflicht für alle Solisten.
Die Vorlagen steuerten alle Musiker bei, dazu kamen noch zwei Anleihen aus dem zeitgenössischen Umfeld. Wenn man Titel mit Enthusiasmus loben kann, dann die zwei Thad Jones Stücke, die so gut gerieten, dass sie ins Repertoire der späteren Thad Jones – Mel Lewis Big Band gehören sollten. Überhaupt wird Thad oft wegen seiner Fähigkeiten als Komponist und Arrangeur hoch bewertet, und behält so bis heute seinen unbestrittenen Verdienst in der Jazzgeschichte. Die Komposition von Dollar Brand (alias Abdullah Ibrahim) ist ein schöner Ohrwurm; auch dieser blieb zu Recht im bandbook der späteren Dollar Brand Auftritte.
Atlantic-LPs in der Hand zu halten, war schon immer ein Vergnügen, hatten diese doch immer fette Cover mit fachgerechten liner notes. Eines der seltenen Originale zu kaufen, kann man sich heute nicht leisten, bei den Preisen! Darum greifen Sie zu, wenn Sie diese Ausgabe irgendwo stehen sehen.
