So we wanted to go back in to Westbeach with Donnell, but it turns out now he's in rehab, and obviously is in no shape to record us. So Mr. Brett tells me to call his friend Ryan Greene. So I call Ryan and he records what is probably our best record. It turns out Ryan has really long hair and knows a lot of metal bands, but he's pretty cool anyway. We record at Westbeach, but mix at EMI. This record takes about 3 weeks, which is about as long as we've ever spent on any record. We had a bunch of weird people come in to play steel drums and flaminco guitar and stuff. We covered a Mark Curry song too, which a lot of people don't know. ("Perfect Government") . This record turned out to be our best selling record. Without any radio or video play, it ended up going gold. Pretty neat. -NOFX

Sisters Mila de la Garza (drummer, now 11) and Lucia de la Garza (guitar, 14), cousin Eloise Wong (bass, 13), and family friend Bela Salazar (guitar, 17) developed their chops as regulars at all-ages matinees in Chinatown, where they played with original L.A. punks like The Dils, Phranc, and Alley Cats; went on to open for riot grrrl legends Bikini Kill and architect Alice Bag as well as DIY heavyweights Best Coast and Bleached; and were eventually featured in Amy Poehler's movie Moxie. When the pandemic put a pause on shows, The Linda Lindas went on to self-release a four-song EP, make their own videos and grow a following beyond Los Angeles. But they never expected or could have even dreamed that their performance of "Racist, Sexist Boy" for the Los Angeles Public Library in May 2021 would take them from punk shows to TV shows. A month later, when the school year ended and summer began, The Linda Lindas got to work on their first full-length LP. Looking at Dan Andriano's catalog, one might assume that making new music is old hat for the veteran vocalist, songwriter, bassist and primary member of the beloved Chicago punk outfit Alkaline Trio. Decades into his prolific career, though, Andriano is just as in love with the process as he was in those early days of sweaty clubs and cramped vans. On Andriano's new Epitaph Records album, Dear Darkness, that un?ceasing passion is evident on this solo, self-produced project, which follows his 2015 release (as Dan Andriano in the Emergency Room) Party Adjacent, finds Andriano venturing into deeply personal lyrical territory while also pushing the limits of just what his unclassifiable sound can be. While off the road in 2020, Dan Andriano amassed a sizable collection of ideas, including a small batch of songs he felt were ready to bring into the studio. He sent a handful of those tracks out to close friends and trusted collaborators and was particularly encouraged by the excited response from Mike Park, an old friend and creative confidante whose Asian Man Records released Alkaline Trio's first two albums. Park was thrilled by what he heard and encouraged Andriano to consider a working on a new solo project. It was near the end of 2020, and enough strides had been made in COVID-19 safety that Andriano felt safe to travel from his home in St. Augustine, Florida to Park's studio in San Jose, California. "He could tell that I was pent up and anxious and needed to do something productive and positive, and just get out of here," Andriano says of Park. "So he was very helpful in getting me out there." While in San Jose, Park introduced Andriano to brothers Randy and Dylan Moore both of whom would end up playing alongside Andriano on Dear Darkness. The group originally intended to record an EP, but Andriano had so much material to work with - and felt such a natural rapport with the Moore brothers - that the impromptu session led to a full-length album.

guccihighwaters is the artistic persona of 21 year -old artist/producer Morgan Murphy. L7 ist eine 1985 gegründete, ursprünglich nur mit Frauen besetzte Punkrock-Band aus Los Angeles. Sie
wurde von den beiden Gitarristinnen Donita Sparks und Suzi Gardner gegründet. Beide hatten vor L7 schon
in diversen Gruppen gespielt. Komplettiert wurde L7 von der Bassistin Jennifer Finch, die vorher mit Courtney
Love (Hole) und Kat Bjelland (Babes In Toyland) bei Sugar Baby Doll spielte, und Ann Anderson am
Schlagzeug; Letztere wurde allerdings zügig durch den Drummer Roy Koutsky ersetzt. Der Bandname, den
man mit Daumen und Zeigefinger formen kann, bedeutet so viel wie Langeweiler oder Spießer, ist aber auch
ein Ausdruck für die Sex-Stellung 69. Alles andere als langweilig ist jedoch der lärmende und ungestüme
Sound, den L7 mit einer Mischung aus Girlpower und Grunge zwischen Motörhead, Frightwig und den
Ramones zum Besten gaben. Zusammen mit Don Bolles, dem ehemaligen Schlagzeuger der Punkformation
Germs, nahmen L7 ihr erstes Demo auf. Das Band fiel in die Hände des Bad-Religion-Gitarristen und Epitaph-
Chefs Brett Gurewitz, der 1988 auf seinem Label das ungehobelt-rotzige, schlicht "L7" betitelte Debüt
veröffentlichte. 1989 wechselten L7 zu Sub Pop.

Die Hypochondrie ist eine psychische Störung, bei der die Betroffenen unter ausgeprägten Ängsten leiden,
eine ernsthafte Erkrankung zu haben, ohne dass sich dafür ein angemessener, objektiver Befund finden
lässt. Einer dieser Betroffenen ist Mikey Carnevale, Frontmann der Surf-Punk-Band The Frights aus San
Diego. "I‘ve gotten better with time, but I’m pretty paranoid about most things, especially health issues - I think
everything’s killing me", so der Sänger und Gitarrist. Aus diesem Grund hat er sich seine akustische Gitarre
gegriffen und unterm Strich elf Songs komponiert, die seinen gesundheitlichen Ängsten Ausdruck verleihen.
Sein kreativ-therapeutischer Ansatz mündete in "Hypochondriac" und damit das dritte Frights-Album. Für die
Gruppe ist es gleichzeitig das Epitaph-Debüt. Es wurde von Fidlar-Frontmann Zac Carper produziert. Mit
Carnevale im Studio waren Richard Dotson (Bass), Marc Finn (Schlagzeug) und Jordan Clark (Gitarre). Das
Quartett sorgte für einen Sound, der seine Energie aus dem Spannungsverhältnis von schmerzhaften Lyrics
und glänzenden Hooks einerseits sowie tollpatschiger Attitude und melancholischer Einstellung andererseits
bezieht.

Schon über zwei Jahrzehnte auf dem Buckel, aber so wie frisch wie eh und je: "Is This Thing Cursed" ist das
neunte Studioalbum der 1996 in Chicago gegründeten Punkrock-Band um Frontmann Matt Skiba. Da der
Sänger und Gitarrist seit 2015 parallel bei Blink-182 aktiv ist und dort 2016 den Chartstürmer "California"
verantwortete, sind seit dem letzten Langspieler des Trios, "My Shame Is True" (2013), stattliche fünf Jahre
vergangen. Doch auch seine Kompagnons lagen nicht auf der faulen Haut. Nachdem das Alkaline Trio
2014/15 auf ausgedehnter Welttournee gewesen war, veröffentlichten Dan Andriano (Bass, Gesang) und
Derek Grant (Schlagzeug) jeweils ein Solo-Album. "Is This Thing Cursed" wurde fast komplett im Studio
geschrieben. Während der Produktion fiel dem Trio auf, dass das Album Parallelen zu "Maybe I‘ll Catch Fire"
aufwies, der zweiten Platte der Gruppe aus dem Jahr 2000. Der Songwriting-Prozess war fast so wie damals,
erklärte Dan Andriano. "Wir wollten einfach einen Song schreiben, uns darüber freuen und dann
weitermachen. Mit dieser Haltung waren wir im Studio tätig." Fans aus den Anfangstagen der Band wird es
freuen.

"The New America" ist das elfte Studioalbum der stilprägenden Punkrock-Band Bad Religion. Es erschien im
Mai 2000 bei Atlantic Records. Für die Aufnahmen reiste die Band von Oktober bis Dezember 1999 nach
Kauai, Hawaii, wo Todd Rundgren (Grand Funk Railroad, Hall & Oates, Meat Loaf, New York Dolls, Patti
Smith, The Band, The Tubes, XTC) die Platte im Studio Victor’s Barn produzierte. Rundgren gehörte zu den
Musikern, die der Bad-Religion-Sänger Greg Graffin früher bewundert hatte. Doch die Zusammenarbeit lief
aufgrund einiger Differenzen eher mäßig. Trotzdem kam das Album bei Publikum und Kritik gut an und
verkaufte sich über 150.000 Mal. In Deutschland erreichte "The New America" Platz 16, in den USA Rang 88
der Charts. Bobby Schayer saß letztmals am Schlagzeug. Brett Gurewitz, obwohl zu dieser Zeit kein
Bandmitglied, schrieb an "Believe It" mit und spielte den Song auch mit ein. Für die Wiederveröffentlichung
wurden die Songs neu von den originalen Studiobändern gemastert, was für einen klareren und druckvolleren
Sound sorgte.

Eigentlich kann es nicht verwundern, dass die Toten Hosen für ihre Sommer Open-Air-Konzerte auch Bad
Religion als Support verpflichtet haben. Campino und Co haben sich immer schon ausgiebig vor ihren
musikalischen Helden verbeugt. Bad Religion gehören ohne Frage dazu. Die Band, 1980 in Los Angeles
gegründet, wurde schnell zum Synonym für intelligenten und provokativen West Coast-Punkrock. Sie gilt als
eine der einflussreichsten und wichtigsten Bands des Genres und hat bis heute über fünf Millionen Alben
verkauft. In fast vier Jahrzehnten hat die Gruppe kontinuierlich Grenzen verschoben, Autoritäten und
Überzeugungen in Frage gestellt - bewaffnet mit treibenden Gitarren und einem unsterblichen Willen, jeden
zu inspirieren und zu provozieren. "No Substance" ist das zehnte Album von Bad Religion und markierte 1998
eine Rückkehr zu alter Stärke. Es enthält Klassiker wie "Raise Your Voice", "Shades Of Truth" und "The
Biggest Killer" und wurde mehr als 200.000 Mal verkauft. Für die Wiederveröffentlichung wurde ein neues
Remaster von den Originalbändern gefertigt, das mit extrem klaren Sound beeindruckt.

1994 wechselten Bad Religion zum Major Atlantic, da Brett Gurewitz und Jay Bentley durch ihre Labelarbeit
mit Epitaph zeitlich sehr stark eingebunden waren. Eine Trennung von Band und Plattenfirma sollte für
Entspannung sorgen, brachte aber zunächst einmal "nur" enormen finanziellen Erfolg: Das Atlantic-Debüt
"Stranger Than Fiction" (1994) ist bis heute das kommerziell erfolgreichste Album von Bad Religion. Im
Anschluss stieg Gurewitz aus, um sich ganz Epitaph zu widmen. Für ihn kam Brian Baker an Bord, einer der
besten Gitarristen der Punkrock- und Hardcore-Szene. Im Herbst 1995 spielten Bad Religion in New York
City mit "The Gray Race" ihr neuntes Studioalbum ein; es erschien im Februar 1996 bei Atlantic. Die Platte
wurde erstmals seit der Debüt-LP "How Could Hell Be Any Worse?" tatsächlich gemeinsam aufgenommen,
um nach Gurewitz' Abgang ein Gefühl der Einigkeit herzustellen. Den Hauptteil des Songwritings steuerte
Greg Graffin bei. Produzent war Ric Ocasek, der auch schon für Weezer und Bad Brains gearbeitet hatte.
Insbesondere die beiden ersten Singleauskoppelungen "A Walk" und "Punk Rock Song" wurden recht
erfolgreich und die zugehörigen Videos im Musikfernsehen gespielt. Das Album selbst erreichte in den USA
Platz 56 und in Deutschland Platz 11 der Charts. Die von Epitaph besorgte remasterte Neuauflage erscheint
auf schwarzem Vinyl.
