Matthew Bourne follows 2017's Isotach album, and recent collaborations with Keeley Forsyth and Nightports, with a collection of prepared piano pieces. Irrealis was recorded in a single session, each take played as live without any overdubs. Having taught himself the basics of prepared piano by throwing confectionary into his school's instrument, elements of these experimentations played a key role in Bourne's early performances. This culminated in an infamous performance piece which saw the explosive musical demolition of an upright piano with a sledgehammer. Far from the staid academic process the discipline is often approached with, Irrealis sees a restless improvisational musician explore the possibilities of his instrument with a box of nuts, bolts and Blu-Tak, and a sense of playfulness and spontaneity.

Keeley Forsyth's 2020 debut album found an elemental voice ringing out from beneath the rubble. Understated but devastating, Debris' success led to a transformation as the songs were brought to the stage. An innate performer, Forsyth found herself channelling something she hadn't yet fully come to understand, and it was here that the voice found on Debris began to probe outwards and discover a physical form. It's a form that fully takes shape on her second album Limbs. Anyone who saw Forsyth perform in the brief window after Debris was released and before shows ground to a halt can testify to the show's power. In pin-drop silence, enraptured audiences watched as Forsyth inhabited a new body. No stranger to portraying characters in her career as an actor, this was something different. Limbs is a record of reckoning with that change. After the initial purge of Debris, those feelings of trauma and fear remain but there's also a life to live. "Save me from the chair where sadness lies," she sings on opener 'Fires', wrestling the need to be creative within the routine of daily life. Where Debris was composed and recorded in close proximity to instrumentalist and arranger Matthew Bourne, Limbs deploys a more expansive palette. With Forsyth at the centre, collaborator Ross Downes acts as another limb, remotely producing the pulses and drones which feed back into the voice. Bourne this time is enlisted to "Bring some of the soil of Debris" into Limbs. The result is clearer and more spacious. If Debris sounded like it was buried under the earth - Forsyth's voice repressed and breathless - Limbs brings some of that live presence.

Murcof, the primary project of producer Fernando Corona, returns to The Leaf Label for the first time in thirteen years with a mammoth and visionary double album, The Alias Sessions. This collection brings together all the elements incorporated into the project to date - meticulous sound design, ghostly samples, forceful beats, diaphanous atmosphere - but pushes the sound even further in terms of both abstraction and beauty. This is electronic music of exquisite tension and ecstatic release, moving from barely audible details to explosive peaks, much of it delivered by earth-moving bass. The Alias Sessions is the most ambitious and wide-ranging Murcof album to date - less about the individual components of a track and more about the cumulative force of the set as a whole. Corona has composed several film scores and that experience with atmosphere informs these tracks. The record benefits from careful and focused attention, preferably over longer periods - it's too expressive and dynamic to remain in the background. Corona began work on this music in April 2017, when he met with choreographer Guilherme Botelho, leader of Geneva-based dance company Alias, about a new performance piece - 'Contre-Mondes'. Versions of these compositions make up the first half of the album. Corona continued work with the organisation for a 2018 performance entitled 'Normal.' which now forms the second part of the record.

Nach dem selbstverlegten Debüt "At Sacred Walls" von 2016 ist "New Hymn To Freedom" das zweite Album
des in England ansässigen Trios Szun Waves. Dieses setzt sich aus Musikern zusammen, die schon in
Bands wie Earlham Mystics, Triosk, PVT, Portico Quartet und Circle Traps für Furore sorgten, solo Alben
einspielten, andere Künstler produzierten oder mit namhaften Kollegen im Studio waren. Der Titel kommt
nicht von ungefähr, handelt es sich doch bei der Formation um eine reine Improvisationsgruppe.
Entsprechend spielten Luke Abbott (Synthesizer), Laurence Pike (Schlagzeug) und Jack Wyllie (Saxophon)
ihre Songs live und frei improvisiert ein. Standesgemäß wurden die Aufnahmen nachträglich nicht editiert.
Musikalisch bewegt sich das Trio zwischen experimentellem Spiritual Jazz à la Don Cherry, Alice Coltrane
und Sun Ra sowie britischer, in der Clubkultur fußender Elektronik, wie man sie zum Beispiel von James
Holden - in dessen Studio die Drei ihr Debüt einspielten - Four Tet oder Nathan Fake kennt. Und wer will,
kann in dem pulsierenden, wabernden und psychedelisch schimmernden Ganzen sogar auch noch dezente
Einflüsse von Can, Ryuichi Sakamoto und Liars ausmachen.

Viel ist über die drei Briten, die sich Snapped Ankles nennen und auf der Bühne in monster-waldschratartige
Verkleidungen à la Chewbacca und Yeti hüllen, nicht bekannt. Sie gründeten sich 2011 als Retro-Postpunk-
Band, leben im Osten Londons und haben die vergangenen Jahre damit zugebracht, lokale Veranstaltungen
zu bespielen, vorzugsweise Ausstellungen und Performances. Neben dem klassischen
Rockinstrumentarium - Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug - setzt die Gruppe auf selbstgemachte Klangerzeuger und
analoge Synthesizer, was einen eigenwilligen Sound erzeugt. Das Szenemagazin "Boomkat" fand dafür die
Beschreibung: "Hot-stepping garage rock outta London, underlined with Factory Floor-esque monotone
synths and punky attitude." 2015 brachten Snapped Ankles mit "I Want My Minutes Back" ihre erste 7’’ für
das Label Leaf heraus. Der eingängige Nu-Kraut-Track fand im Sommer 2017 in der EP "The Best Light Is
The Last Light" einen schmissigen Nachfolger. Vor allem der muntere, gut gelaunt nach vorne pluckernde
Song "Jonny Guitar Calling Gosta Berlin" begeisterte durch seine einnehmende Kombination aus melodiöser
Elektronik, stoischen Beats und Küchenlyrik. An diesen Mix docken die neun Songs von "Come Play The
Trees" nahtlos an. Sehr charmant.
