Lyrically, May You Be Held follows the humanistic themes explored on Love in Shadow, partially informed by Turner's navigation of fatherhood and family life. Here, Turner's bellows and howls seem less threatening than wounded, primal, and mammalian. Thrill Jockey ist ein 1992 von Bettina Richards gegründetes, auf die unterschiedlichsten Musikstile spezialisiertes Plattenlabel aus Chicago. Richards startete das Label mit einem zusammengesparten und zusammengeborgtem Budget von 35.000 $ in ihrem kleinen Appartment in New York City. Vom ersten Tag an war es die Philosophie des Labels die Musiker nur nach persönlichem Geschmack und Sympathie zu signen. Der Durchbruch gelang mit dem Umzug nach Chicago Mitte der 1990er Jahre. MIt dem Erfolg von Tortoise stand Thrill Jockey lange Zeit für den Postrock-Sound der windy city.
