Anlässlich seine 30. Jubiläums bat das 1988 gegründete Label einige der Bands, mit denen sie im Laufe der Jahre zusammengearbeitet haben, eine Coverversion einer ihrer Lieblingssingles aufzunehmen. Das Interessante ist aber, dass die Bands auch die ursprüngliche B-Seite abliefern mussten. Das machte es viel schwieriger und ein paar blieben auf der Strecke, aber Damaged Goods hat am Ende einen tollen Satz von sieben Singles. CTMF aka The Chatham Forts aka die aktuelle Band von
Wild Billy Childish hat ,Not Fade Away" von The Rolling Stones gecovert, seinerzeit (1964) schon eine Coverversion des Buddy Holly Klassikers. Die B-Seite ist ,I Wanna Be Your Man". Dazu
eine Hommageversion des 7" Sleeves und das DG Logo als Decca Verschnitt.

"Like an Inexplicable Wheel" - Das Seltsamste im Leben ist die Zeit, nicht die Uhren, sondern dass es eine Vergangenheit gab und es (scheinbar) eine Zukunft geben wird. Das Leben scheint ein unerklärliches Rad zu sein, und ich dachte, es sollte einen Popsong (oder zwei) darüber geben. "Last Punk Standing" - Ein typisch CTMF-klingender Track, der eigentlich "Who'll be the Last Punk Standing" heißen sollte, aber ein verkürzter Titel sieht besser aus. Wieder geht es um Zeit und darum, dass das Wissen zur Neige geht. Wenn eine Generation ausstirbt, gibt es niemanden mehr, der die wahre Natur ihrer Erfahrung erklären kann. Diejenigen, die im Zweiten Weltkrieg gekämpft haben, sind so gut wie verschwunden und so bekommen wir den Aufstieg der neuen Rechten: Wir lernen aus der Geschichte, dass wir nicht aus der Geschichte lernen. Wer bleibt übrig, um die Essenz dessen, worum es bei Punk ging - hausgemachte, sich selbst befriedigende Musik - weiterzugeben? PS - die Figur Roberta ist aus einem Leadbelly-Song - ich fand es schön, sie und Mark E. Smith im selben Popsong zu haben. 'Like an Inexplicable Wheel' - The strangest thing in life is time, not clocks but that there was a past and there will be a future (apparently). Life seems to be an inexplicable wheel, and I thought there should be a pop song (or two) about that. 'Last Punk Standing' - A more CTMF sounding track. This should really be called 'Who'll be the Last Punk Standing?' but it looked better as a shortened title. Again it's about time, and knowledge running out. When a generation passes there's no one left to explain the true nature of their experience. eg- those who fought in WW2 are all but gone and that's how we get the rise of the new right: we learn from history that we don't learn from history. Who'll be left to pass on the essence of what punk was about - home-made, please yourself music. PS - the character Roberta, is from a Leadbelly tune- I thought it nice to have her and Mark E.
