Item Description
One of the greatest jazz musicians to ever come out of the UK, saxophonist Edward Brian “Tubby” Hayes began playing professionally when he was just 15 years old, quickly rising to stardom in the late 1950s as co-leader of the legendary Jazz Couriers alongside saxophonist Ronnie Scott. Recorded in December 1959—shortly after Scott left the Couriers to open his own club (the famed ‘Ronnie Scott’s’ in Soho)—Tubby’s Groove is widely considered to be one of his greatest studio albums. Here Tubbs plays in a quartet setting with former Couriers, Terry Shannon on piano and Jeff Clyne on bass, as well as the great Phil Seamen on drums. Although Tubby became ill and died at age 38, he was at this time still very much in his prime, as can be heard in his virtuoso playing on tracks like the opener “Tin Tin Deo” and “Sunny Monday”. He can also be heard playing vibes on his own “Embers”.
