Wer ist eigentlich Dean Blunt? Man weiß nicht viel über den Mann, der früher eine Hälfte des Londoner Produzentenduos Hype Williams war. In Wirklichkeit sei das gar nicht sein Name, sagt man. Er lebe in London und Atlanta, heißt es. Dort habe er auch an seinem zweiten Soloalbum "Black Metal" gearbeitet. Dem voraus ging sein Solodebüt "The Redeemer", mit dem Blunt 2013 für Furore sorgte, war es für manche doch das beste Album des Jahres und für andere ein undurchsichtiges Album über eine chaotische Trennung. Blunts neue Odyssee "Black Metal" bewegt sich sprunghaft zwischen Distanziertheit und Gefühlsausbrüchen, zwischen gedanklichem Tiefgang und greifbarer Intimität, zwischen Low-Fi, R&B, Electronic und Pop. Und über all dem steht Dean Blunts durchdringliche Stimme. er verbindet genrefreie Musik, visuelle Kunst und Identitätsspiele. Und bildet ein Flechtwerk, das genauso bizarr und undurchsichtig ist wie seine Person.

"Calling Out Of Context" features 12 previously unreleased tracks of Buddhist Bubblegum Disco Electro Pop including the anthemic 'That's Us/Wild Combination', 'The Platform On The Ocean', 'Make 1, 2' and 'Arm Around You', all recorded during Arthur's prime years 1985-90.Collaborators include Mustafa Ahmed, Walter Gibbons, Steven Hall, Jennifer Warnes, and Peter Zummo. 30 years have passed since Arthur Russell left us, in relative obscurity, from AIDS complications in 1992. Yet his work-as composer, songwriter and dance music innovator-is better known now than ever before. Since Audika Records and Arthur's partner Tom Lee began excavating and curating Arthur's vast archive beginning in 2003, critics worldwide have hailed Russell as a visionary. Countless younger artists cite him as an influence. There has been an internationally acclaimed documentary film (Matt Wolf's Wild Combination) and biography (Tim Lawrence's Hold onto Your Dreams), a critical study (Matt Marble's Buddhist Bubblegum) along with various tribute albums, concerts and events. In 2016 Arthur Russell's archive was acquired by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center as part of their American Music Collection. If Arthur Russell isn't quite the pop star he imagined he would be, he is at least widely considered one of the most significant figures in late 20th century American music. The majority of the material selected for "Calling Out Of Context" comes from two sources. The first was a completed album which dates from 1985, entitled "Corn" of which three very different test pressings remain (complied and reissued in 2015). The second source was material earmarked for Rough Trade recorded between 1986 -1990. Both 'Make 1,2' and 'Hop On Down' (originally titled 'Hop On Down To Petland') are two songs that Arthur wrote specifically with the plan of releasing as singles. Before Disco, and before the transcendent echoes, Arthur studied to be a composer. His journey began in 1972, running away from his home in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Heading west to Northern California, Arthur studied Indian classical composition at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music followed by western orchestral music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, before ending two years later in New York at the Manhattan School of Music. Traversing the popular and the serious, Arthur composed "Instrumentals" in 1974, inspired by the photography of his Buddhist teacher, Yuko Nonomura, as Arthur described, "I was awakened, or re-awakened to the bright-sound and magical qualities of the bubblegum and easy-listening currents in American popular music". Initially intended to be performed in one 48 hour cycle, "Instrumentals" was in fact only performed a handful of times as a work in progress. The legendary performances captured live in New York at The Kitchen (1975 and 1978) and Franklin St. Arts Center (1977) feature the cream of that eras downtown new music scene including Ernie Brooks, Rhys Chatham, Julius Eastman, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, Garrett List, Andy Paley, Bill Ruyle, Dave Van Tieghem, and Peter Zummo. Pitchfork lauded "Instrumentals" Vol. 1 as a masterpiece and one of Arthur's "greatest achievements". Americana touching on Copeland, Ives, and maybe even Brian Wilson. "Instrumentals" Vol. 2 is a moving, deeply pastoral work performed by the CETA Orchestra and conducted by Julius Eastman. Also included are two of Arthur's most elusive compositions, 'Reach One', and 'Sketch For 'Face Of Helen' '. Recorded live in 1975 at Phill Niblock's Experimental Intermedia Foundation, 'Reach One' is a minimal, hypnotic ambient soundscape written and performed for two Fender Rhodes pianos. 'Sketch For 'Face Of Helen' ' was inspired by Arthur's work with friend and composer Arnold Dreyblatt, recorded with an electronic tone generator, keyboard and ambient recordings of a rumbling tugboat from the Hudson Rive...

Viele kennen und lieben sie als bezaubernde Frontfrau der von der Kritik gefeierten Band Rilo Kiley aus L.A.. Seit die Band im Jahr 2000 ihr Debüt veröffentlichte, haben sich Jennys Talente als Sängerin und Songwriterin in raschem Tempo weiter entfaltet. Rilo Kileys drittes und neuestes Album "More Adventurous" hat in der Presse und bei anderen Musikern gleichermaßen für geradezu überschwängliche Reaktionen gesorgt. Auch wenn "Rabbit Fur Coat" ihr Solodebüt ist, hat es nichts jungfräuliches an sich. Vom ersten Track "Run Devil Run" bis zur Reprise von "Happy" ist Jennys unwiderstehlich gefühlvolle Stimme tief, sinnlich und verführerisch; manchmal voll sprühender Heiterkeit, manchmal traurig und der Welt überdrüssig. Talentierte Freunde wurden zu den Aufnahmesessions zwischen Touren und Aufnahmesessions im Laufe des Jahres 2004 hinzugezogen. Einer der herausragenden Tracks - eine Coverversion des Titels "Handle With Care" von den Traveling Wilburys - mit seinem phänomenalen Crescendo zum Mitsingen vereint die Stimmen von Jenny, M.Ward, Conor Oberst (von Bright Eyes) und Ben Gibbard (von Postal Service & Death Cab For Cutie). Songs wie "Happy" und "Melt Your Heart" scheinen wie für eine Verandaschaukel in den Südstaaten gemacht und belegen Jennys viel gerühmte Fähigkeit, mit wunderbaren Melodien und ausgefeilten Texten zu überraschen. Der Titeltrack "Rabbit Fur Coat" ist eine epische Erzählung nach Art eines Bobbie Gentry Klassikers und bringt Jennys Gabe, lebendig zu erzählen perfekt zur Geltung, während "Rise Up With Fists", mit einem anschwellenden Gospelchorus und einem Text, der vor dem geistigen Auge eine Unmenge Bilder der Verzweiflung und Erlösung hervorruft, eine soulige Glanzleistung Jennys darstellt. Die großartigen Backing Vocals sind den Gospelsängerinnen Chandra und Leigh Watson (The Watson Twins) zu verdanken.

Album über einen Berg vom Meister des eigenwilligen Pop. Gruff Rhys liebt Konzeptalben. Vor drei Jahren veröffentlichte er ein solches unter dem Namen "Babelsberg" inspiriert von dem Ortsschild des gleichnamigen Potsdamer Stadtteils. Der Paektusan, ist ein immer noch aktiver Vulkan, der im Grenzgebiet von China und Nordkorea liegt und das höchste Gebirge der Region ist. "Seeking New Gods" ist das mittlerweile siebzehnte Solo-Album des ehemaligen Super Furry Animals-Sängers.Produziert wurde es von Gruff Rhys selbst und anschließend vom legendären Beastie Boy Produzenten Mario Caldato Jr. abgemischt. Die musikalische Biographie des Berges fügt dem Lebenslauf des mittlerweile 50-jährigen Gruff einen - nicht nur geologischen - neuen Höhepunkt hinzu. Er etabliert sich als ein Meister des eigenwilligen Pops mit unvergleichlichem Gespür für Melodien und Hooks. Mit "Seeking New Gods" erklimmt der Waliser musikalisch neue Pop-Gipfel, deren atemberaubende Aussicht ihn in diesem Moment sicher schon wieder neuen Songs inspirieren.

Eigentlich waren die Arbeiten am neuen This Is The Kit-Album schon für Ende 2018 geplant, doch stattdessen wurde Frontfrau Kate Stables von The National eingeladen auch auf Tour ihre Parts, die sie zuvor schon auf deren Album „I Am Easy To Find“ eingesungen hatte, live aufzuführen. “I think it did me loads of good,” lacht Stables heute darüber. “It was so brilliant when I was writing to be away from my songs and the responsibility of being in charge of a band or a project - just to forget about that for a while and be a minion in someone else’s band was brilliant, I loved it. I think it really helped my writing and my getting through whatever I needed to get through.”

Kate Stables Band This Is The Kit zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass ihre Songs gern emotionale Knoten lösen, während sie gleichzeitig bemerkenswerte Geschichten erzählen. Und so ist auch das zweite Album „Off Off On“ auf Rough Trade Records, das am 23. Oktober erscheint, von klar destillierten Songwriting-Fähigkeiten ebenso durchzogen wie von unsteten Rhythmen des Lebens: “two steps backwards, one step forwards… Swinging between good places and bad places inside and out.”

Das neue This Is The Kit-Album entstand in einer entlegenen Hütte in Wales kurz bevor die Covid-19-Pandemie überall um sich griff und die Welt in einen allumfassenden Pause-Zustand versetze. Es handelt von “events catching up with you and how you catch up with events“, wie Staples erklärt, “not so much mood swings as brain swings, the here and there that your brain tugs you on.” Es zeigt die Band größer und vielfältiger als je zuvor, während sie immer noch vor Ideen überzusprudeln scheinen!

JARV IS… ist die neue Band der britischen Indie-Ikone Jarvis Cocker. JARV IS… wurde 2017 für einen Auftritt auf einem von Sigur Ros kuratierten Festival in Island gegründet. Zur Band gehören neben Jarvis Cocker noch Serafina Steer, Emma Smith, Andrew McKinney, Jason Buckle und Adam Betts.

Die meisten Songs von JARV IS… nahmen erst auf der Bühne Gestalt an. Viele der Tracks waren anfangs reine Studio-Skizzen, die sich erst langsam in den Liveshows entwickelten und Formen annahmen. Um sich also selbst einen Eindruck vom Status Quo des Songmaterials zu machen, wurden sämtliche Konzerte aufgenommen. Nach einem Konzert beim Desert Daze Festival in Kalifornien, hörte Geoff Barrows (Portishead, Beak) schließlich die Aufnahmen und schlug Cocker vor, diese doch als Basis für ein komplettes Studioalbum zu nehmen. Gesagt getan: Die Overdubs und der Gesang wurden in den Narcissus Studios in Neasden in London produziert. Die Postproduktion fand in Jason Buckles Place du Big Boss-Studio in Raynes Park statt, final abgemischt wurde das Album schließlich von Craig Silvey in den Toast Studios in West-London.

Das Debüt „Beyond the Pale“ von JARV IS… ist eine wundervolle Momentaufnahme und das erste eigene musikalische Lebenszeichen von Jarvis Cocker seit seinem 2009er Album „Further Coplications“.

Wohin sich JARV IS… in der Zukunft entwickeln werden, wird man schon ganz bald wieder auf der Bühne sehen, vielleicht auch in Deutschland – Must I Evolve?
