Gemma Ray & The Death Bell Gang sees Berlin-based British artist Gemma Ray take an unexpected detour from her usual psych-soul and torch-song oeuvre, with an electronic-based record that is both a sonic departure and a difference in process. Evolving without her previous tools and parameters, the record sprang from a visit to the studio of her neighbour in Tempelhof Berlin, sound designer Ralf Goldkind (whose credits include Fantastichen Vier, Trost, Mona Mur). “ I just went in for a cup of tea, as my studio is in the same building”, says Gemma. Conversations merged into Gemma collecting sounds and sending them to Ralf, and vice versa. “Not field recordings, but vocal recordings on the phone and recordings of recordings”. They ended up with warped, bent and digitally battered guitars, contorted jams, destroyed signals, and a canvas for new songs to emerge. With this stockpile of patterns and sounds courtesy of Ralf’s interpretive designs, Gemma dug for the beauty, and the beautifully nasty and wrote from there. The only rule was “no happy shit” and in fact that motto was painted onto the wall during the sessions to serve as a reminder. That is not to say however that this is a sombre misery-fest. Amongst the funereal (Procession), the nightmarish (All These Things) and the heavy (I Am Not Who I Am), are the automaton-pop (The Point That Tears) the yearning (single Come Oblivion), and the tender (Howling). All epic despite their underlying simplicity and groove, and with a dada-esque playfulness underpinning it all. The album also includes guest musicians Kristof Hahn (Swans) on lap steel, and Andy Zammit on drums. Limited splatter and eco vinyl (500 each worldwide), comes with an exclusive pullout poster and download card.

Nicole Faux Naiv is a Berlin-based dream-pop artist whose debut album “Moon Rally” is released on Bronzerat Records (Gemma Ray, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) on April 8th, 2022. After self-releasing two singles, including one in her native Russian tongue, producer Robbie Moore (LA Salami, Little Simz, Florence & The Machine, Anika) invited her to his Impression Studio in Berlin to record the 10 songs that make up the album. The result is a playful, poly-sonic expo abundant with indie-pop hooks and grooves, with her voice and synth at its halcyon heart. Born in the German Sauerland in 1995 to parents from the Soviet Union (from the Kyrgyz and Kazak regions to be exact), her upbringing was especially musical, and the trajectory of her influences is apparent on her debut. From 60s and 70s Russian movie soundtracks, to Russian postrock such as Agatha Christie and Kino, through to The Cure and French pop such as Air, the result is curious and inherently unique, though her songwriting is simple and precise. Her music and imagery reflects her background, where she admits she never quite fitted in to the mould, instead finding retreat in nature, her own imagination, and ultimately her songs. Indeed, to call her music dream-pop is apt on many levels. Some of the songs, she says, “were melodies I dreamed of. I try to capture a lot from the unconscious mind and dreams.” Her lyrics too are reflections of her dreams, as with the single “Imaginary Boy”, and title track “Moon Rally” which is “about nostalgia, desire and dreaming about a great fantastic place which is bigger than our reality”.

Record Store Day 2020 Release.
Limitation: 1000 copies.

Available on limited edition pink vinyl, with extra previously unreleased tracks included on the download card, this Record Store Day exclusive is a repackaging of a long out-of-print vinyl version of Gemma Ray's sophomore solo album "Lights Out Zoltar!", on its 10th anniversary.Recorded and produced at home in London with Michael J Sheehy (Dream City Film Club, Miraculous Mule), it showcased Gemma as an original and ambitious writer and producer, an independent with a wondrous box of tricks up her sleeve. As such it received rave reviews from the international press (below),whilst "100 mph (in 2nd Gear)" was Single of the Week on BBC Radio 2's Mark Radcliffe show."By rights she should be a household name. This album is a rare treat indeed" - John Doran (BBC/QUIETUS)"Had Phil Spector forced his girl groups in a more noir-soundtrackdirection, this might've been the result.Ray has a truly impressive feelfor vintage pop flourishes, layered to lavish effect. And all thosedetails are what you're supposed to be paying attention to, right upuntil the blade hits your back." SPIN"Three months after I first got the album I'm still marveling at the wayRay has synthesized a whole slew of retro references into a cinematicpsychedelic sound.Ray's sound is like one of those Willy WonkaGobstoppers: it's massive and composed of layer upon layer of auraltastes and colours" - VANITY FAIR"An eerie aural kaleidoscope that conjures up thoughts of what analbum by Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las produced by David Lynchwould have sounded like.Though it echoes with references tomid-'60s melodramatic pop, it's of the moment and
