Dutch sound artist albert van abbe now joins the raster family, with an unexpected collaboration with founder olaf bender aka byetone titled Dual. having spent time working side by side in ’s-hertogenbosch at the willem twee studio, the result of their collaboration is both smooth and haptic, rounding out as an expressive camaraderie between the two veteran producers. jovial and innocent, Dual alludes to the experimental research process of finding common ground. fully embracing the haphazard richness of live recordings, the result is a remarkable fusion of contrasting outputs; intricate collaborative efforts and byproducts woven together with an eager indifference towards expectation. the artists embrace a skewed navigation through pronounced highlights, intricate lulls and moments of temporal stasis, intermittently punctuated as a means of intentionally avoiding notions of rigid perfection. with ‘real-time’ approach directing Dual’s creation, the pair effectively shies away from any meticulous planning, and the music runs free and negates any rigid parameters one might have expected. quirky titles exude the collaged form of the release, and underline its innocent charm. as a whole, Dual focuses on the creative process and fully engages listeners with its own dialogue, though it is very outspoken, at times even abrasive.

From the deep depths of Noord Brabant (nl), high school friends and long term collaborators Klont and Whistle aka Wessel and Luuk join forces once again. Quindi Records returns once more to the swooning romanticism of Cabaret du Ciel, the long-running project from Andrea Desidera and Gian Luigi Morosin. After the contemporary material which made up long-player The Breath Of Infinity, Raintears heads back into the group’s archives and focuses on a limited cassette release from 1991. Originally released on Morosin’s own Ionisation Tapes, Raintears is described as heralding a new phase for Cabaret du Ciel following their earlier Solarisation and Weather Colours cassettes. This revised, expanded version of the release opens with ‘Raintears (Piano Version)’, which originally came out on an Ionisation compilation entitled Imago Sonora 1. Truly evoking the spirit of the track and its meaning, it was recorded on a rainy Sunday afternoon when Desidera’s friend and trained pianist Francesco Martignon heard the original melody for ‘Raintears’ and proceeded to improvise on the theme, with Desidera and Morosin embellishinbg Martignon’s exquisite playing with subtle touches of synth and sampling. In its fragile, tape-worn repose, the piece is loaded with the delicate ambience a rainy Sunday afternoon implies - calm, melancholic and wistful. ‘A New Day’ is a piece cast in light and shade, contrasting two core melodic phrases expressed through synth and guitar, with a light touch of speech sampling adding to the cinematic poise of the track. ‘Time Of The Twins’ originally appeared as a single track on the cassette release, but here it’s framed as two distinct parts which meet in the middle. The first half is patient, gliding ambience rich in the harmonic interplay and winding narratives which typifies Cabaret du Ciel overall.

The next ten-inch cut of the Time Is Now series comes courtesy of Nicky Soft Touch. These four tracks are a taste of things to come, handpicked from an as-yet-unannounced double LP the Bristol native has had in the works since 2019. Nicky Soft Touch's recent outings include two dusty hip-hop dubplates on London's Ghost Notes Worldwide; for Lonely City Sampler he explores a more British sound. Using a tape deck and a pile of old jungle tapes, cut-up snippets were crafted into an audio collage balancing ambience with rave style crescendos. Driving dubwise bass dominates 'Lost In A Sea Of Rolling Eyes' while disrupted breakbeats meet stuttering chords in 'Lonely City Cut 4'. The closing track's garage-inflected UK techno beat is haunted by spaced out diva vocals, a melancholic mover for city nights.

“Gamelan Sketches” are studies in Javanese gamelan and electronic music by Journey of Taro (Adrien L’Honoré Naber). The sketches are based on and are part of a collection of music and ideas finding its origin in travelling to Indonesia for more than a decade. During these travels Adrien L’Honoré Naber studied and recorded the music in this region of the world. Journey of Taro is all about tradition collaborating with technology, where old meets new. Gamelan are traditional gong orchestra’s from South East Asia and are fused by Taro with dancefloor music like dubstep and Sound System culture. When Adrien L’Honoré Naber first started going to Indonesia back in 2008 he went on a mission to make field recordings. As companion during his travels he had a MP3 player with him. At that time MP3 players contained about 512 MB so he had to choose his music very carefully. With Amon Tobin, Digital Mystikz, Vex’d and similar artist locked in his headphones he made field recordings over the course of a year and in his head this music started fusing with Indonesian culture. Taro creates an sonic world where he takes you along on his journey’s around different cultures emphasizing the beauty of collaboration, shaping mystical worlds with hypnotizing atmospheres to immerse into stories based on ancient myths, legends and folklore. This is where a blend of gamelan, dub, soundscapes, exotic rhythms, field recordings and underground bass music come together. Selamat dengar dan bersenang senang.

There are various reasons why it took so long to realize a record together… but here we are… and this is how I imagined it and what I had hoped for… Circles Bros is Wim Lecluyse. Originally from The Netherlands but living in Belgium now for many years. He has been making and releasing his music since 2002… amongst others on his excellent Morc Records label. With his music Circle Bros is submerging you with hypnotic lo-fi ambient and drone music with a folklorish feeling and a psychedelic touch… His work has been shifting from more song based to ambient like pieces… or a perfect blending of that… “Waves/Peaks” came into existence when Circles Bros sent me a proposal for an album… but instead of releasing the complete album I proposed to make a record out of the two long mersmerizing tracks which were part of the selection he sent me… when in the dialogue about this the working title of one of these tracks turned out to be “Vrystaete” I knew for sure this was the right way for a Circle Bros record on Vrystaete… These two long tracks with a minimal structure are created with minimal means and minimal post-production… the tracks evolved out of shorter pieces and are “stretched” creating this dreamy and otherworldly vibe… This is music to sit back to and get into and let it come over you and flow with it… Music to experience and not talk about to much…

Assembled to accompany a short film from Manchester-born visual artist, poet and filmmaker Tibyan Mahawah Sanoh, Joshua Inyang and Joshua Tarelle’s newest is a cinematic audit of identity and ancestry. In the film, Sanoh works hard to visually illustrate an honest and vulnerable picture of her soul. Inyang and Tarelle respond by doing the same with sound, collaging disparate elements together in a way that should be familiar to anyone who heard “hybtwibt?” or their jawdropping RA mix from earlier this year. Warped field recordings, overdriven rhythmic pressure, syrupy pads and disorienting vocals are cut and pasted over each other, generating a living, breathing study of the duo’s Northern working class Black British reality. Unlike the duo’s acclaimed “Somewhere Decent To Live” full-length, elements mutate and transform: mushy noise bends into street sounds, haunted vocals into echoing drill melancholia and muffled howls into shattered digital remnants. The main event is the full 10-minute soundtrack, that’s layered with Sanoh’s disorienting and deeply personal poetry and echoes Mark Leckey’s recent “In This Lingering Twilight Sparkle”. Then the EP is bumped up with three sketches from the same sessions, two of which never made it to the final mixdown. ‘Version 3’ is a particular highlight, pasting heartbreaking piano and blowtorched vocal loops over winding drill bass > sounds like Burial remixing Unknown T into pure syrup.

Following the success of the label's Cassiopeia reissue, Mysticisms presents a second EP from Nail with four previously unreleased tracks of gliding deep house, dub techno and Balearic sunrise anthems, highlighting this respected talent. Recorded between 1993 to 1999, predominately at the DiY collective's Strictly 4 Groovers studio in Nottingham, with the ever reliable Damian "Deadbeats" Stanley engineering. While edits and overdubs were completed at home, some were mixed down to DAT and cassette to became part of Nail and friends after party soundtrack, as much for pure enjoyment as appraisal. Still a teenager for the early years of these recordings, Nail was honing his craft. Utilizing the ever faithful S1000 sampler, Juno 106, Oberheim Matrix 1000 and Roland Sh101, influences from Future Sound Of London, the emerging 'West Coast Sound' rising in the US, Maurizio's dub fusion, through to the bouncing free party sounds emanating out from the Midlands to a now nationwide party scene embed in to machines. Unreleased until now, the Cassiopeia release ignited an interest in these old cassettes and DATs, bringing them to life and offering further proof of Nail's place as one of the UK's best House producers. Milenasong is Berlin-based Sabrina Milena, a Norwegian/Slovenian/Croatian, living in her chosen home of Berlin. Milena has been making music for 5 years with her Fostex 4-track and has a general fixation on organic sound. As a former student of illustration, it is perhaps no wonder that her music is very visual; Milenasong almost paints with patchworks of sound. "Guitar chords are like sketches for me," says Milena, "I see working with layers, production, arrangements and contrasts as a challenge. The voice is for me personally my main instrument. Although I feel most comfortable singing in English, I grew up with the German language so I also like Germany a lot. And then there's the influence of the Norwegian fjords. My music is almost as if I were trying to be a bridge between these two countries." The result of this painterly pattern-making are intimate songs that mix singer-songwriter ballads with otherworldly soundscapes of ambient college and watercolor vocals. Milenasong's many influences include: Sandy Denny, Townes Van Zandt, Roy Harper, Roberta Flack, The Books, Les Mouches, Cat Power, Keith Jarrett, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, etc. She also loves cigarettes and the smoky sound of Joni Mitchell's voice.

A beautiful 10" vinyl by the emerging label Tormo Records (their previous edition is none other than Hela, and they also have some stuff from Lodo). Music by Mono Caníbal (Emu Proteus 2, Moog Sub37, Yamaha Dx27, Korg Ms2000, Korg Minilogue, Roland JV1010...); recording in a jungle in another Galaxy (The Empty Hall) in the year of the lord between 2.134 and 4.288 according to the Ummita calendar. The unique and unpredictable letters are the work of the unclassifiable Sagan Ummo (here Satan Ummo). The fantastic artwork is by Sagan Crimewear and the scary mastering (I swear the bass is really powerful) is by J.F. Rojo at Red Records Studio.

I was initially intrigued by the artwork for Mark's New Routes out of Innerland. It felt so familiar. I had to have a listen. Upon hearing it I was shocked to find out how much I loved the music. It was a beautiful blend of the things I loved about ambient music and what my partner calls "Space Rock". I had never heard Innerland and I was already taking New Routes out of it I needed to buy Innerland. So I did some research - found out Mark was on Sonic Cathedral label and contacted Nat over there who ended up being super helpful and friendly. I was able to get Innerland and A journey through Ambient Innerland in vinyl. It is no wonder I was drawn to the music, a frequent collaborator with Ulrich Schnauss, Mark's work is at once blues, ambient and psychedelic.
