Alex Figueira, the man behind Music With Soul, Fumaça Preta & Conjunto Papa Upa, has teamed up with Maxado, Brazil's leading rocksteady vocalist, to create another impossible crossover, connecting the dots of the vast tropical music map that have remained appart for far too long.
What if the now-legendary producer Lee Perry had recorded & produced the nascent Wailers trio of Neville Livingston, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, not in Kingston, the scorching hot Jamaican capital, but instead in Belém, an even hotter city, at the heart of the Brazilian Amazon.
Whilst Kingston's airwaves and street parties were dominated by the locally produced rocksteady, ska and reggae, Belém was dancing to it's own beat of carimbó and siriá.
Alex Figueira and Maxado, two avid fans of both musical traditions, entered the Barracão Sound Studio, Amsterdam's famed vintage recording studio, determined to find an answer to that hypothetical question. The result is not only tangible and unprecedented, but incredibly emotive & hypnotic too.
The chorus of "Quando Será" is unnervingly apt for our times tool, "Quando será que eu vou te ver?", or "When will I see you?" the song asks. Well until we see each other, Music With Soul offers some musical relief in the form of this collaborative song.
The B side offers a beautiful touching instrumental version, led by the impeccable flute rendition of Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Milliet, a prominent member of the Brazilian music scene in Amsterdam and Alex's long time collaborator having shared the stage countless times in the past 3 years. His delicate phrasing will give you goosebumps.

São Paulo-based musician & singer composer Maxado made his mark fronting Firebug, Brazil's leading, if not only, rocksteady band, also featuring influential musician, producer and mix engineer Victor Rice. The two musicians met during Alex's first trip to Brazil, when he was already a massive Firebug fan, and quickly formed a firm friendship. Finally over the course of Maxado's first visit to Amsterdam, the pair had a crack at writing & recording together, quickly discovering that their chemistry extended to the studio. Now you can hear the first fruits of their blossoming musical relationship.

Stefano Tirone is an eclectic artist, open to a wide range of different music genres. Working on these songs for Stefano was like going back to the years when he used to listen to Acid Jazz music, especially to the records produced by the Mizell brothers. Their influence here is obvious from the first notes: the funk in “Try My Love” is not as high-fueled as in James Brown’s songs but, as the legendary brothers taught us, by blending a hint of soul jazz with the ‘70s downtempo drumming groove, we get a fluid brew, relaxed and dreamy. Famous catalan singer, producer and media personality Miqui Puig puts his own spin on these covers by two of the biggest spanish bands from the 80’s: ‘Cien Gaviotas’ by Duncan Dhu and ‘Resurrección’ by El Último De La Fila. This single is part of the collection of 7” celebrating the 15th anniversary of the label Buenritmo Records.

Classic Brazilian soul funk from 1976 in the same vein as Tim Maia, Jorge Ben or Carlos Dafé's recordings from that period. All four tracks are stunning and feature dramatic vocals, fat drum beats and sophisticated arrangements, following the tradition of the best funk music coming from the States in the '70s. Tony Bizarro was a Brazilian songwriter, producer and singer who worked with most of the greatest soul and funk artists in Brazil. Boogie and disco music were making headway and soon became popular in the Brazilian market. His own discography comprises just one solo album, released at the peak of his career, a bunch of compactos and some later LPs that did not get any bigger than his best-known hit 'Estou Livre'. This 1976 EP has been a long-time dancefloor weapon for DJs in the same vein as Tim Maia, Jorge Ben or Carlos Dafé's recordings from the same period. All four tracks are stunning! The opening song 'Que Se Faz Da Vida' is a downtempo funk joint with some dramatic vocals by Tony Bizarro, fat drum beats and Isaac-Hayesque wah-wah sounds that could have easily been included in the soundtrack of a blaxploitation movie_ The strings and sophisticated arrangements featured on the flipside elevate this record to the top of the best Brazilian funk ever recorded in the '70s. Very hard to find, especially in good condition, this record now gets a proper reissue for the first time.

Mi Conga es de Akokan is built on the Conga de los Hoyos rhythms from Santiago de Cuba. Saxophones and trombones alternate with vocals imploring the listener to dance over intensely syncopated percussion, leading to a melodic flight by the masterful trumpeter Reinaldo "Molote" Melian. The horns re-enter, and the Orquesta takes off to soaring heights of rhythmic intensity and sophistication. La Guajira is a slow country rhythm told by the tres guitar and percussion onto which horns and strings add slinking, narcotized harmonies. Pepito tells a sensual tale of romance with a girl from the country (la guajira), which slowly builds in intensity over soneos, coros and mambos until all parts interlock in a lugubrious climax.

This limited edition 7" collects three unreleased tracks from the recording sessions from Los Mambo Jambo's third album, Jambology: ‘Cayo Diablo’, ‘El Último Shimmy’ i ‘Experiment In Honk’. It was published on June 20th to support the campaign 'Salvemos Las Tiendas De Discos' (Save The Record Stores) promoted by Record Store Day Spain.

Limited to 300 copies. West African and Venezuelan inspired dance floor 45 from Cyril Diaz the 1950's Trinidadian bandleader playing the roots music of his Afro-Venezuelan parentage. His father Gordon Diaz migrated to Trinidad sometime in the early 1900's. Throughout the 1950's Cyril Diaz and his big band calypso orchestra toured the Caribbean and South America recording culturally inspired hybrid calypsos with an African and Latin tinge. Showcased here is his fascination with West African shango on "Mme Killio" Mme Killio is a famous beauty contest in Africa, Diaz’s version being recorded by Emory Cook in November 1957.

The stunning 45s from this set will now be available for individual sale. The series kicks off with Toni Tornado’s 1972 single Bochechuda b/w Aposta as well as a split 45 with the out and out rocker from Antônio Carlos & Jocafi (Quem Vem Lá) on the A-Side and the groove laden “Paz E Amor” from Os Incriveis on the B-Side."

The Polydor label released a few singles in the late 1960s that became very obscure and unknown, even to researchers. Most of these 7 inches are super psychedelic and very creative, but totally anti commercial. Own compositions, recordings and good productions, always with a top team. These works were not promoted or publicized by the label and very few copies circulated at the time. The impression is that the intention was to freeze or disappear with the artist in question. Vermelho is one of them, a work that is little talked about or known but that always attracts the attention of those who have access to these two tracks. Arrangement by Rogério Duprat, who was proud to have participated in these recordings, with Rafael Moreno on bass, Alberto Niccoli Junior on drums, Bolão on Sax and Marcos Ficarelli, the “Vermelho” on guitar and vocals.

Marcos already knew well the ways of recording and producing an album, having participated in historical groups of Brazilian rock in the 60's such as Top Sounds, Código 90 and Loupha, to name a few. At this stage, he had already acquired good knowledge of recording and studio management. Excerpts such as “And in the hole of the corners, to look for, is what I try in vain” presents the listener with the mood of the dark times of that time, and today seems a premonition about the difficulty of finding this single, even in private collections.

“Parabéns Meu Bem” and “Gira-Gira” are tracks with an advanced rhythm for the time. Drums very well marked, with an original take and very close to North American funk. The bass is consistent and strong and the guitar full of effects and very reminiscent of the sound and energy of Jimi Hendrix, Santana and Blood Sweat & Tears. There is yet another musical layer created by Duprat, who managed to insert a mini orchestra along with the sound mass created by “Banda do Vermelho”.

The Peguins keep moving forward into their soul and pop new direction with this four track EP sung in catalan, their native language. These songs deal with our relationship to love and death, the two main threads that will define our existence.

From Costa Rica, Los Cuchillos, a garage punk band that have their path already well defined in the garage punk scene. This is their first ep on Groovie Records, not the last for shure. This tracks are super killers and really shows what the band came for... Limited to 300 copies. 100 of them coloured.

This is certainly both a mysterious one and an elusive one! Who were Grupo Natureza (Nature Group), and why is this release such a rarity?

'Pode Acreditar' was pressed on Som Livre Records in 1981 and it is believed very few copies were released into the commercial market. Those familiar with the productions of Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge will no doubt recognise their hallmark sound here and that this single is 'probably' the work of the pair or one member at least. They were a regular in-house production team at Som Livre at the time, and there is a definite resemblance to Adriana's song 'Sei la Amor' from 1978 which Lincoln Olivetti was involved in.

Very little information is available about this release. A tantalising comment by Brazilian collector ‘bargainvinyl1’ on the original release’s Discogs page suggests 'Pode Acreditar' was a reaction to the Baby Consuelo and Pepeu Gomes pro-marijuana song 'O Mal é o Que Sai da Boca do Homem’, which caused controversy with Brazil's governing military dictatorship at the time. Though condemning marijuana's use, the word "baseado" (joint) is mentioned in the song, and this could be the reason behind the release being pulled by the heads of Som Livre and consequently it becoming one of the rarest releases on the label.

Whilst its backstory is not crystal clear, it is an undeniable sun-drenched, laid-back boogie groove with AOR touches by the clandestine group. Pure 80s Rio-vibes, super-catchy and an earworm that sticks with you throughout the day.

For number 90 in the Brazil45 series, we share a couple of lesser-known discoveries that have become recent favourites here at Bongo HQ.

First up we head to the north of Brazil with funky Forró / boogie hybrid monster, 'Vendedor De Mangaios' by Josan. Originally released in 1981 on the album 'Rio De Renovações’ on Copacabana Records. This addictive dancefloor gem is still relatively under the radar, but it has become a firm favourite at Bristol's Worm Disco Club parties and amongst the DJ's and collectors of Brazil's underground dance music scene.

Taken from the illustrious singer Bartô Galeno's self-titled 1977 album on Tapecar Records, 'Vou Tirar Você Daqui' is an unusual one. Not easily pigeon-holed, the song sits somewhere between MPB / funk and rock, yet isn't really any of them. Backed with a big orchestrated sound and tripped-out synths, the track has a truly unique feel.

We hope you dig these finds. Another testament to the diversity and depth of Brazil's rich musical heritage.

For number 89 in the Brazil45 series, we present a no-nonsense Brazilian funk / samba rock double-sider courtesy of the mighty Golden Boys and Silvio César.

The Golden Boys were a quartet formed in 1958 by the Correa brothers; Renato, Roberto, Ronaldo, and their cousin Valdir Anunciação. They enjoyed a stellar recording career, from the 50s through to the 90s, with members of the group still involved in music to this day. For this selection we headed to their self-titled 1975 album released on Odeon and cherry-picked one of the group’s funkiest moments, 'Segura Na Cintura Dela (O Gavião)'. By now performing as a trio, they enlisted Paulo Debétio of Lemos E Debétio fame as executive producer and, on the controls, producer Milton Miranda. Miranda was a silent figure behind so many of the much-loved classic Odeon / EMI releases of the 60s and 70s.

'Beco Sem Saída’ is another Odeon release, and another classic produced by Milton Miranda. Taken from Silvio César's self-titled 1971 album, here the prolific singer and composer delivers a swinging samba rock / groove. With fantastic arrangements by Geraldo Vespar, this addictive swing was reconstructed in the 2000s when Drumagick sampled it for their track 'Sambarock'. So here we have two slices of Brazilian dancefloor pressure just waiting to take centre stage again.

A: Lafayette – Sol De Verão / B: Marissa Rossi - Quem Vem Lá For Brz45087 we present a split release comprised of two tried-and-tested favourites from the Mr Bongo record bag. Rio-born pianist and organist Lafayette’s career started in the mid-60s and saw him become a prominent member of the Brazilian musical movement entitled 'Jovem Guarda’. For his inclusion on this selection in the Brazil45 series we move things along a few years to 1982 and the Brazilian boogie gem 'Sol De Verão'. Taken from his album 'Edição Especial’ and originally released on Copacabana Records, 'Sol De Verão' was written by Jorginho Gomes from one of Brazil's greatest bands Os Novos Baianos. It's a superb slice of 80s boogie/funk brilliance with a super catchy ear-worm of a vocal - definitely one for the dancers! For the flip, we include an absolute monster from the fantastic Marisa Rossi, who we featured previously on number 38 in the Brazil45 series. 'Quem Vem Lá’ is a heavy driving Samba Rock / MPB groove track with female and male call and response vocals. Originally released on a very rare and exclusive 7" also on Copacabana Records, but this time in 1971. Marisa would go on to work with the legendary Arthur Verocai in the 1980s. Two very different slices and styles of Brazilian music, but both absolute gems.

For volume 86 in the Brazil45 series, we return with a pair of stellar 1970s Brazilian-Funk / Black Rio nuggets by two of the greats of the genre, Toni Tornado & Zeca Do Trombone. 'Sou Negro' (I'm Black) is taken from Toni Tornado's (aka Antônio Viana Gomes) sought after 1970 four-track compacto EP on Odeon Records. Already having had some experience in show business as a dancer in the 1960s, Toni started his musical career in 1970 and adopted the stage name 'Toni Tornado'. The influence of James Brown flowed through his music, with Toni becoming one of the first Brazilian artists (alongside Tim Maia) to introduce the soul and funk sound into Brazilian music. Together with other contemporary musicians and bands such as Banda Black Rio, Gerson King Combo and Cassiano, this new sound led to DJ's throwing soul parties. This unique Brazilian take on soul and funk (and later on disco) became coined as 'Black Rio'. A movement that celebrated pride in its Black identity and consciousness. Zeca Do Trombone has an impressive repertoire which has seen him releasing a handful of solo albums and working with some of the greats of Brazilian music, such as Tim Maia, Ivan Lins, Joyce, and Luis Vagner. The track 'Coluna Do Meio' is taken from his 1976 collaboration project 'Zé Do Trombone E Roberto Sax' with saxophonist Roberto Sax, which additionally features the heavyweight Wilson das Neves on percussion. This catchy Wah-Wah guitar-led dancer has become a favourite with DJ's over the years and will continue to be championed for years to come.

You know it's going to be a heavy record when DJ / collector Mr Thing asks you to keep a look out for a copy on your next digging trip to Brazil. Add on top of that, being sampled by Madlib on the track 'Curls’ on his Madvillain album! Taken from Waldir Calmon's 'Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons' album on Copacabana (1970), from looking at this unassuming record cover featuring a middle-aged man sporting an impressive pair of glasses you wouldn't expect it to become the fabric to one of the songs from the iconic 'Madvillain’ album. But… like many things in life, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. 'Airport Love Theme’, like its name suggests, falls into full-on lounge territory. It’s feel-good music made to be the soundtrack for a utopian world that never really was. Yet behind the silky-smooth groove is an addictive earworm waiting to be heard. Afro Son' taken from the same album, pushes things in a different direction towards a sound that is more firmly rooted in the Brazilian tradition. This quirky 60's-breakbeat-funk groove is reminiscent of French artist Jean Jacques Perrey's 'E.V.A.', also from 1970, in its melody and backbeat, where the Moog synthesizer of Perrey is replaced with a more orchestrated sound by Calmon. This track is magical, cinematic and breakbeat-laden with a hidden unknown exoticism. Waldir Calmon had an active career in music working from the '50s right up until his passing in 1982. His career started early, forming his first ensemble at the age of fourteen, originally working in bands in nightclubs and writing jingles. He progressed in the early '50s to a long-running career working in television. In addition to his television work, he had success with his recording vocation, mixing in the same musical circles as greats such as Tom Jobi, João Gilberto and Doris Monteiro.

For number 83 in the Brazil 45 series we have a real treat. Di Melo's self-titled debut album has long been collectible for its irresistible Brazilian-funk sound, pleasing the Brazilian, B-Boy breaks, funk collectors, and sample hunters alike. With original copies for the album now fetching crazy sums, we felt these tracks needed another moment in the sun for all to enjoy. For this release we have selected two of our favorite cuts from this cult album, ‘Kilariô ' & ‘Pernalonga'. Coincidentally these two gems were released on Odeon Records in 1975 as a rare promo campacto (a Brazilian 7", which plays at 33rpm). 'Kilariô' is a pure Brazilian-soul classic. All the right elements gel together, whilst Di Melo works his relaxed vocal magic over the top. ‘Pernalonga', with its catchy guitar and horns intro, loose break-beat drum, has the feel-good factor which some may recognize as one of the samples behind N.A.S.A featuring David Byrne, & Chali 2na's 'The People Tree' from 2009.

On the heels of her Mango Hill records debut single,”Thee Only One” ft. Joey Quiñones from East L.A.’s, Thee Sinseers, Trish Toledo, a devoted fan of soul music, has built her fan base serenading audiences with her sultry voice on soul classics, and earning herself a legion of devotees as a result. Teaming up with The Abuelitos, Trish delivers some of her smokiest vocals yet, with songs like “Coco LaLaLa” & “Do the Wrong Thing”. Understanding that Ms. Toledo is the undisputed queen of the newly coined “Souldies” movement in L.A., the songwriting team decided they wanted to take her to the east coast via Miami for some more tropical sounding vibes. Hearkening back lyrically to such songs as The Supremes, “I Hear a Symphony” or the Toys, “Lovers Concerto”, “Coco LaLaLa” makes that familiar, romantic connection between love and music with some smoldering salsa piano thrown in to spice things up. On the other hand, there’s “Do the Wrong Thing”, a slow-burner with temptation on the rocks. A married woman, a persistent man, and another round of drinks on the way. Will she “Do the Wrong Thing”? You’ll have to listen to find out.

Conjunto Papa Upa returns with “Todo Parao” (“Total Shutdown”), another boundary pushing tropical smasher. Bringing you the ultimate (humourous) hymn to the pandemic over an exquisite blend of highly danceable Caribbean rhythms (zouk, cadence, kompás, guaracha) and classic synths. Backed by a deep sea dub on the flip, complete with resplendent cowbell(!), timbales and Wurlitzer solos. Another stepping stone that showcases yet another angle of the unique and radical production style of Alex Figueira. Conjunto Papa Upa is the Afro Caribbean centered solo project of Figueira, backed live bysome of the best musicians from Amsterdam’s Latin and free jazz scenes. Their debut LP was recently released on legendary American indie label Names You Can Trust. Figueira is also known for his percussive work on tropical psych power trio Fumaça Preta or his regular live incursions with Amsterdam’s turkish psych folk powerhouse, Altin Gun. Having spent the whole night working on the melodic structure of the song, Figueira took a break to take advantage of the different time zones and check on his dad in Venezuela, and ask how the pandemic was unfolding there. His answer: “Todo Parao” (“Total Shutdown”). The same two words he had used multiple times before, this time pronounced in a hilarious Rum-infused way, giving Alex an unexpected flush of inspiration in the form of an instant infectious chorus. He excused himself and immediately got locked back in the studio. The result is this incredibly catchy tune, displaying the optimistic approach of a boyfriend to the chaos, uncertainty and worrying of his girlfriend about the pandemic, presenting her with his own lascivious lockdown plan for the two, declaring at a certain moment: “while everyone is lamenting, you and I are going to enjoy”. In the musical side, rhythms from Haiti, Guadaloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico and Cuba are unscrupulously mixed with the most diverse and strikking elements: strident cowbells that evoke the toughest salsa of 70's New York, harmonized guitars evidencing the inconfesable influence of 80’s heavy metal, a delicate Wurlitzer piano reminiscent of Black America’s greatest Soul ballads, Casio keyboards rescued from a child’s toy cabinet and a whole plethora of half-broken classic Synths, to create an equally irresistible and unclassifiable hybrid. On the flip side, Part 2 opens with a prominent dose of the lead guitar that appeared briefly on the A side, working as a preamble to an instrumentalist frenzy that is not concerned about displaying technique. Its mere intention is to tell you the rest of the story without using words. A few bars into the song, the first gear shifts with a monumental solo given by the least probable of all “soloist” instruments: the cowbell (!). After it, a crispy Timbal crashes the party, making a statement out of its only appearance in the entire recording. Finally, the longed-for turn of the melodious Wurlitzer, who left everybody craving for more on the other side of the record, giving the modest keyboard skills of Figueira an imposing pentatonic virtue.

Music With Soul returns with another genre-defying instant classic, expanding the limits of the Tropical Dance music universe.
Staying true to the label's essence, founder Alex Figueira places a high bet with this new release, introducing a brand new breed of traditional “Hindoestan” (Indian diaspora in Surinam) music and Cumbia. Taking the music of underground Surinam musician and empresario A. Bechan for an explorative excursion into the depths of the Colombian caribbean coast, this explosive combination raises the bar unquestionably. Equally weird, groovy and trippy, this 45 will turn any party upside down, regardless of any factors. The only problem you will encounter is what to play after. The solution is right on the other side. Just flip the record and give them the Instrumental version, featuring electric guitar, an alternative percussion set up and the beloved classic Juno-60 synthesizer in the leading role for another 4 minutes of dancefloor catharsis.

Neno Exporta Som’s super-rare compacto 'Deixa A Tristeza’ from 1971, has been high on the want-lists of Brazilian record collectors and DJs for years. This was intensified, along with a wider cult-following, following Floating Points dropping the gem on his amazing 'BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix’ back in 2015. Mr Bongo included 'Deixa A Tristeza’ on our Record Club Vol 1 compilation. Following that came many requests to release it back on its original ‘compacto’ 7” format. So finally, here it is for all to enjoy.
By sheer coincidence, also released in 1971 on Copacabana Records is Agnaldo Rayol's ‘Sumaúma’. A fairly un-known record which has the potential to become an underground classic. This epic track has a psyche break-beat drum and bass groove intro - just asking to be sampled! Along with lush string and horn arrangements and a soaring female/male vocal duet. This beauty has been a firm favourite in the Bongo office since we came across it and hopefully you dig it as much as we do.

"Created by Marc Brown and Chris Franck, this track marks the first release from their forthcoming album. You may know them from their Smoke City days or from Marc's KV5 releases and Chris as Da Lata.
This limited release seven inch represents a rebirth of the Humble label, an imprint Marc began in the 90's through the broken beat specialists Goya distribution.

The track is a mid tempo electronic Afro-Brazilian song which features the vocals of Sérgio Pererê, an artist hailing from Belo Horizonte, Brasil. The vocals were recorded in Brasil and the link was forged through Chris's Brasilian music connections.

The B side sees London based Reggae supremo Gil Cang dub out the rhythm in a heavy manner, Gil is in house producer at Tuff Scout and long time Mannaseh collaborator."

Double sider of uptempo vintage MPB samba jazz from Carlos Sodré, originally released as a 33rpm ‘compacto’ 7” single on Copacabana in 1965.

‘Mais Kriola’ first appeared on Brazilian Beats Brooklyn compilation put together by Greg Caz and Sean Marquand for us in 2006. It’s a lovely laid back mid tempo boogie/soul/fusion jam. Originally appeared on Matheus self-titled LP from 1975.
‘Maita’ is a wonderful piece of warm, upbeat MPB from Doris Monteiro. Originally appeared on her ‘Agora’ LP from 1976, released by Odeon.

‘O’Seis’ are the core members of the mighty and legendary ‘Os Mutantes’ – namely Rita Lee and brothers Arnaldo and Sérgio Baptista, accompanied here by Raphael Vilardi, Maria ‘Mogguy’ Malheiros and Luiz Pastura. The record features anthemic, heavyweight, psychedelic rock on ‘Suicida’ b/w deeper, tripped-out MPB-folk on ‘Apocalipse’. Both tracks were written by Rita Lee, assisted by Tobe and Vilardi respectively. The term ‘holy grail’ is a little overused these days perhaps, but this definitely is one. Originally pressed and released by the band themselves in 1966, apparently only a handful of copies are known to exist (sources/numbers vary). The record has changed hands for up to a staggering $5000! Ouch.

Sivuca’s legendary Brazilian cover of the Bill Withers classic ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ was a big hit on the Rare Groove scene and still sounds amazing today.
We’ve also included his amazing cover of Edu Lobo’s ‘Ponteio’ on the flip – both where originally released on Sivuca's self titled album from 1973 on Vanguard.

One for the heads! A rare female vocal double header, starting with Dalila's 1968 gem 'Canto Chorando' originally released on a sort after 'compacto' 45 on Copacabana.
On the flip – a Copacabana 7” release in the form of Neyde Alexandre’s 1971 song ‘Perplexidade', with a fantastic break intro, horn stabs and lush vocals. One of our favourite Brazil 45’s.

‘Diexa o Morro Cantar’ features on Claudia’s very first 7”, relaeased in 1965 by RGE Brazil.
Claudia’s version ’Mas Que Nada’ is more of a jazzy, folk-funk take on the Ben classic. A relatively recent discovery made during our last trip to Brazil!

Brazilian mid tempo boogie double header. We’ve been playing these two out for the last couple of years and they are firm favourites.
‘E Novamente Mas Que Nada’ is the opening track from Reseda’s 1979 album on Som Livre. An ultra catchy vocal hook, boogie guitars and synths lead into a piano and cuica breakdown and horns to finish. One of the finest in the genre in our opinion.
‘Ginga’ is taken from Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti’s self-titled masterpiece, reissued on Mr Bongo. Arguably the most immediate and club friendly track from the album, it always turns heads. Another premium example of Brazilian boogie from the masters of the sound and producers for the likes of Rita Lee, Erasmo Carlos, Don Beto, Marcos Valle, Tim Maia, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Sandra Sa, Painel de Controle and many more.

‘Sinal Vermelho’ – midtempo psyche-funk workout tough on the drums. Brilliant vocal from Marilene. Taken from 1973 compacto 7” released on Copacabana.
‘Verão Vermelho’ is taken from Nonato Buzar’s 1970 LP ‘Temas De Novelas’, a collection of songs he wrote for Brazilian soap operas. The song features Pedro Santos on percussion.

Brazilian funk double header. ‘As Sementes’ is a mid tempo, funk-soul head nodder laden with percussion and soaring vocals and strings. Originally released in 1974 on Odeon. Major released one album and a handful of ‘compactos’ on Odeon and Som Livre.
‘Dando Fora’ is a mid-tempo samba-funk gem – a firm favourite for David in his DJ sets. Taken from their Edição Extra No. 2 LP released on Copacabana in 1972.

‘Nãnã Imborô’ is a deep rootsy samba masterpiece that may have influenced Jorge Ben’s ‘Mas Que Nada. The song appears on the much-revered and highly influential ‘Tam... Tam... Tam…!’ LP originally released way back in 1958.
Gilles Peterson spent many years trying to track down an original and recently reinterpreted it with remixed and reworks.
Wróblewski Jazz Quintet’s version from 1960’s Poland is a wonderful mellow, atmospheric jazz version. A soaring main brass line with vibes and drums bubbling underneath. Originally released on a 4-track EP, we thought it needed a full side!

‘A Paraiba Não É Chicago’ is a smasher from the very first beat! Golden era Brazilian boogie by Marcos Valle from 1981, with a brilliantly hooky chorus section. Originally released on his ‘Vontade De Rever Voce’ LP.
‘Não Quero Mais’ is VERY reminiscent of The Doobie Brothers ‘Long Train Running’, delivered in a Brazilian style – vintage disco-boogie vibes but with a more soulful chorus section. Originally appeared on Don Beto’s ‘Nossa Imaginação’ LP from 1978.

Arthur Verocai’s first appearance in the series – a double A-side featuring
tracks from his incredible self-titled LP, soon to be reissued on Mr Bongo.
Sylvia is a warm guitar-led instrumental orchestral samba, laced with
percussion and woodwind.
Na Boca do Sol is a firm favourite from the LP – a perfect mix of drums,
rhodes, vocals and strings.

Deep', also known as 'Oh Poor Me' is a mid-tempo latin soul/boogaloo from singer Quetchy Alma aka La Lloroncita. Taken from the very rare LP ‘El Sol Brilla Para Todos’ on Tico.

'Identify Yourself' is a stone cold Nu Yorican funk/soul hit. Drum heavy, huge horns and punchy Rhodes lines. Taken from their self-titled LP on Vaya, released in 1974.

‘2 Minutos De Um Novo Dia’ – pacey samba-funk-MPB that originally appeared on a 7” from 1969 released on Odeon Brazil. Soaring vocals, strings and horns over alternating full and half-time funk drum breaks. Very big indeed.

‘Candomble’ has been a resident in our DJ sets for a long, long time. A retrained, deeper opening section drops into drum heavy, rich uptempo jazzy-MPB. Super catchy vocal hooks and piano lines sit over the top from start to finish. Taken from their self titled album from 1975 on RCA.

‘Ye Mele’ double sider, featuring Elis’ version and an incredible Turkish cover by the wonderful ?enay. Luiz Carlos Vinhas ‘Le Mele’ is an all time favourite of ours, and these versions take it in brilliant new directions.

Elis’ starts in a similar vein to LCV, building with huge vocals and soaring synths, before dropping into a latin-esque section. Appeared on 7” in 1968 on Philips Brazil, not easy to find.

?enays psychedelic soul version is a B-side from a rare Turkish 7” released in 1972. Her classic 1980 LP Honki Ponki has just been re-issued too, which is equally as great.

Edson Frederico double featuring tracks from his sought after and VERY pricey ‘Edson Frederico E A Transa’ LP.

‘Tava Mas Nao Tava’ is a psychedelic boogie-samba fusion with 4/4 drums and traditional rhythms alternating throughout.

‘Bobeira’ is a jazzy samba-MPB workout, with bubbling rhodes, layered backing vocals, horns, percussion and whistles.

Previously unreleased on 7”.

Brazilian funk-soul at it’s finest. Both tracks taken from the increasing more expensive and sought after ‘Cartão Postal’ LP, originally released on Odeon Brazil from 1971.

Both tracks are heavy on the drums, bass and horns, with Evinha’s lead to top them off. ‘Esperar Pra Ver’ is a mid tempo funk soul jam, and ‘Que Bandeira’ moves between funk/soul and bossa/MPB grooves.

‘Que Bandeira’ was released on a 7” EP, featuring tracks from ’Cartão Postal’ LP, on Odeon under the artist name ‘Eva’, in 1972… Ridiculously expensive now, as you have no doubt come to expect – so, released here for your affordable pleasure!

Our leading lady of the series, Claudia, is back once again, this time
with a double A-side.
‘Macumba’ is taken from one of her several self-titled LP’s, the one in
question released in 1970 on Premier, Brazil. Sought after in its
original form.
Psychedelic, orchestral, MPB, exotica with hints of Bollywood! Horns
strings and spaced out male vocals back Claudia’s amazing lead. Highly
unique.
‘Baoba’ is taken from Claudia’s all-killer-no-filler Jesus Cristo LP,
from Odeon released in 1971.
Heavy on the strings and tough on the funk drums, before it breaks into
a vocal jazz section, then back into the groove. Reminiscent of Swedish
folk-funk singer Doris, whose album we reissued in the past.

A. Taiguara - Aquarela De Um País Na Lua

Extremely unique, psychedelic uptempo Brazilian jazz fusion. Flutes, piano and vocal harmonies drift in and out of the mix, creating a lush soundscape.

Taiguara was a prolific and hugely successful singer and songwriter - primarily within pop/MPB - whose career spanned nine albums in the late 60’s and 70’s. He is also thought to be one of the most censored Brazilian artists and was exiled to London in the 1970’s by the Brazilian dictatorship.

‘Aquarela’ is taken from his most experimental album ‘Imyra, Tayra, Ipy’ originally released in 1976 on Odeon.

AA. Marisa Rossi - Deixa Eu Te Amar

Killer uptempo psychedelic funk/soul track, highly sought after, originally released on Copaconana 7” in 1970.

Marisa, and the backing track, sound very much like the wonderful ‘Doris’ whose album ‘Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby?’ we have previously reissued.

Rossi recorded an album arranged by the legendary Arthur Verocai.

A. Noelita - Sambalanca

Quirky, upbeat samba, originally released in 1973 on Copacabana. Organ and horn lines bubble under the drum groove and percussion.

Taken from her only LP ‘Quando Me Sinto Só’ released in 1975. Sought after and expensive in it’s original form.

AA. Doris Monteiro - E Isso Ai

The instantly recognisable, original version of the classic and much covered ‘E Isso Ai’. Beautiful laid back samba/MPB, drenched in horns and percussion.

Taken from her 1971 Odeon LP.

This is the second time the hugely prolific Doris Monteiro has featured in our Brazil 45’s series; previously with ‘Se Vocé Quiser Mas Sem Bronquear’ on number 9.

Claudia - Garra

Rich, sweet, orchestral bossa nova/MPB from the excellent Claudia, another of our favourite artists and featured several times in this series. Taken from her ‘Você, Claúdia, Você’ LP released in 1971 by Odeon Brazil.

Os Tres Morais - Freio Dynamico

Uptempo, cinematic, vocal MPB/Jazz with muted trumpets, pinging bass guitar strings and even a little bit of fuzz for good measure! Os Tres Morais we’re two brothers and a sister; Jane Vincentina, Sidney and Roberto do Espírito Santo. They formed in 1963.

‘Freio Dynamico’ is taken from the groups self-titled LP on Odeon 1971.

‘Ye Mele’ is a very firm Mr Bongo favourite, and always a contender for end/start of the night track. A true classic.

Opens with a distinctive vocal harmony/chant and claps before dropping into bossa piano, organ and drums, which calms for a moment before reaching the chorus… and then building more into a horn section, that plays until the end. Immense.

Taken from Vinhas’ now relatively expensive and very excellent ‘O Som Psicodelico’ LP from 1968.

‘Berimbau’. And again - another favourite. Awe inspiring arrangement, of the highest order.

Opens with what is very reminiscent of a Brazilian Western soundtrack, before soaring into vocals, strings and horns. And then THAT end section…!

Golden Boys were a male vocal group, of brothers. ‘Berimbau’ is taken from their self-titled 1969 LP.

‘O Bofe’ is the title track from the soundtrack to a Brazilian soap opera of
the same name, released on Som Livre in 1972. All music on the soundtrack was
written by brothers Roberto and Erasmo Carlos.
Catchy whistles and MPB vocals over a samba rock groove. Previously unreleased
on 7”.
‘Cho Chua’ is a capoeira-samba groover by Brasil Ritmo, who we know very little
about…

‘Barumba’ is an uptempo funk-jazz monster with heavy drums and piano right from the off. Soaring horns add to the drama. Originally released on his self titled LP on CBS Brazil in 1974. ‘Morre o burro, Fica o Homem’ is the third Osmar Milito track to feature in our Brazil 45’s series. A classic samba-rock track; funk drums fills and punchy horns underpin the MPB vocals, building in tempo slightly over the track. The song was originally written by Jorge Ben. Taken from his expensive and hard to find ‘Nem Paletó, Nem Gravata’ LP released on ATCO Brazil in 1973.

Due to popular demand; a double A side from the one and only, Marcos Valle. This is the second time he has appeared in this Brazil 45’s series.

'Democustico' is a lush, uptempo MPB constructed from guitars, rolling percussion and soaring woodwind. Taken from his 1972 LP ‘Vento Sul’ on Odeon Brazil.

'Freio Aerodinâmico' is an uptempo piano driven, bossa/MPB, laden with hooky vocals, strings and horns, underpinned with a funk drum groove. Aeroplane sound effects thrown in for good measure! Taken from his 1970 self-titled LP on Odeon Brazil.

Anilza Pinho de Carvalho, better known by her stage name Anilza Leoni was a Brazilian actress, singer, former ballerina and painter.

Balumba is uptempo samba jazz at it’s finest. Originally appeared on a very obscure 7” on Copacobana in 1967 entitled ‘Enfarte Musical / Festa Do Balamba’, and was included by Nicola Conte on his Viagem Vol. 4 compilation.

Sambalanço Trio were formed by Cesar Camargo Mariano, Humberto Clayber and Airto Moreira in 1960’s Sao Paulo. The group released some of the most important records of the period and in the genre of samba-jazz.

When the group split in 1965 Airto formed Quarteto Novo with Hermeto Pascoal, and Cesar Mariano went on form Som Tres.

Sam Blues is a Mr Bongo HQ favourite - uptempo bossa jazz fusion, taken from their self-titled LP originally released on Audio Fidelity (Brazil) in 1964.

'Eu Bebo Sim' is a samba-rock master class from Elizeth Cardoso originally released on Copacabana in 1973, as featured on her Disco de Ouro in 1974. Another find at Tony’s Hits in Sao Paulo.
She released around 40 albums during her career, most of which appeared under the name Elizete Cardoso.

Elza, Queen of Samba, is one of the most prolific, successful and well-known Brazilian artists of all time.

In 'Deixa A Nega Gingar' she delivers a top 10 Mr Bongo HQ favourite - Bossa nova underpinned with a Montuno-esque piano line, backed with percussion and horns that would rival Tito.
This 7” cut sounds particularly enormous on a sound system.
