After the success of Codeine's Frigid Stars LP, the trio of Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Chris Brokaw booked time at Harold Dessau Recording in June 1992 to track an eight-song sophomore album. A few days and a couple of unexplainable high-pitched frequencies later, the record was scrapped, shelved, and forgotten about. Brokaw left the band shortly after, and these songs were re-tracked in various iterations for Codeine's final LP. On its 30th anniversary, Numero has unearthed these recordings, restoring the original White Birch to the band's exacting standards with producer Mike McMackin. A slowcore masterpiece hidden in plain sight.

Medusa's First Step Beyond might have forevershifted the perception of Chicago rock history had it managedto make the leap from tape to its never-realized vinyl pressing.Instead, the confl agation of Sabbath, Hawkwind, and Amon DuulII remained petrifi ed in the Corycian Caverns_otherwise knownas the drummer's basement. Self-produced on four track in 1975,this lone transmission from Medusa's repertoire appeared on theextremely mysterious Pepperhead label, whose proprietor allegedlydisappeared after a bad trip and was never been seen again. Forgedin ceremonial mock-velvet, custom embossed in Gorgon-goldand blood-red, and art directed in accordance with the band'selaborate original stage props and artwork, we have positionedthis unreleased opus to fi nally reach its destination: the stereosof pot-smoking and leather-clad teenagers, young and old. In 1971, Bulbous Creation poured what little personal surplus they had into a full day of recording at Cavern Studios, tracking enough material for a full length album. The band wouldn't stay together long enough to save up for a custom pressing on Rock. Singer/guitarist Paul Parkinson was deeply individualistic, and left to perform his songs as he thought they should be, as a solo act. He preferred coffee shops to concert halls, and would stick to his craft another 20 years before hanging it up. Drummer Horstmann followed suit. Jim "Bugs" Wine and guitarist Alan Lewis soldiered on, shortening their name to the more sensible Creation and adding vocalist Wayne Austin, dynamic drummer Tommy Ward, and guitarist Roger Sewell. The Bulbous Creation LP was nearly doomed to oblivion, but for the efforts of Rich Haupt, who issued an unauthorized eight song LP in 1995 on his Rockadelic imprint. Lewis died in 1998 of esophageal cancer. When Paul Parkinson died of leukemia in 2001, a lone copy turned up amongst his possessions, with piece of mind that someone, somewhere, was listening.

This recorded autobiography of Catherine Howe, age 20, briefly appeared in 1971. Too young for memoirs, most artists have barely established any sort of musical competence by the age of legal adulthood, let alone compositions matching the maturity and complexity of Howe's. What A Beautiful Place, however, is a prodigious effort wrought from the melancholy ruminations of post-adolescence. The album's twelve songs unfold like a classic bildungsroman, beginning in the smoke-stained industrial county of Yorkshire, transformed by the electrified creative landscape of mid-century London, and retiring to the warm pastoral bliss of the county of Dorset on England's southern coast. Produced by noted jazz pianist Bobby Scott, the LP_oft-mistaken for a concept album_was available for only a month in the summer of 1971, disappearing after Reflection Records' shuttering in 1971.

The story of the Capsoul master tapes is well known: after City National Bank of Columbus foreclosed on the debt the label incurred to found the city's most successful soul label, owner Bill Moss hid the tapes at a family friend's farm in Central Ohio, looking to dodge repossession. But a flood finished the job that the bank started, and Capsoul's legacy was left to the hands of soul collectors who arrived a generation later. Or so everyone thought. Unearthed in songwriter Dean Francis' basement were two then-unheard Four Mints songs, produced by Francis and recorded in the Capsoul studios with the Capsoul session musicians. "No Longer" and "Endlessly" made for a fitting postscript to the Capsoul story, told by the label's greatest group, and pressed here to bevel-edged 45s with lovingly recreated label art_a full invocation of the magic of an original Bill Moss production.
