What Circus Is This? is the debut LP from Cornish songwriter/producer R. D. Thomas. Produced remotely in 2021 between home studios in London, Cornwall and Sweden.

The record features collaborations with Mickey Smith & Nat Wason (Ben Howard, A Blaze Of Feather) and Rob Hall (Catfish And The Bottlemen) on drum duties. For fans of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Phosphorescent. What Circus.. skirts the dreaded singer-songwriter genre, with a mixture of sincerity and self-deprecation whilst making room for a playful dose of irony.

‘Paint By Numbers You’ takes a wry smile at modern concerns. ‘Sugar Coated Brain’ rattles through a 60’s style strum, with tongue in cheek to balance more trademark vulnerabilities of moments such as ‘This Bloom’ and ‘Salt’.

The penultimate track ‘And I’m Gone’ would have made for an obvious bookmark to the LP, but it is perhaps more telling that ‘Numbers Game’ should be the lingering sentiment ; a musing over the contradiction of modern meritocracy, suggesting ‘a sense of humour’ as a suitable tonic.

Originally released in 1996 on Lethal Records, the entire album "Sex, Props, Cream ... And The Drama In Between" by Long Island's Punk Barbarians finally gets a proper re-release on 2LP and cassette. The original 1LP missed a few tracks off the album, so this is actually the very first time you can hear the full release on your turntable.

In November 1996, The Source gave 3 and a half mic's and here's what Miles Marshall Lewis wrote about the Punk Barbarians debut album: "It seems like recently in rap, everybody's album is based on one of these three concepts, but they're not dealing with the reality of the drama in between," says Doozer mid album, discussing Sex, Props, Cream & The Drama In Between title of his Punk Barbairan crew's debut album. The PBs - Sunny Cheeba, Bam Bam, Doozer and Renegade (aka Shine On) - arrive to a ravaged hip-hop landscape with high aspirations: detailing the drama in between libido, recognition and economics could fill 14 albums, much less the 14 tracks on Sex, Prop, Cream - in essence merely struggle - is, after all, the basis of life itself.
With their work cut out for them, the Punk Barbarians still manage to leave a strong mark. Their lively interplay - with an engaging reminiscent of an Onyx or Lost Boyz - sounds honest, like a crew that's been together since the sandboxes of their native Long Island. The fousome bounce off each other like perfectly arranged quadraphonic accoustics, particularly with thepulsing "Blast Off" and the Spanish-guitar textured "Sweets". Jazzy production includes snippets of vibe and harp that echo masters like Lionel Hampton and Alice Coltrane, while simultaneously evoking the aesthetic feel of The Low End Theory. Some tracks - "The Struggle" (which features Donald Byrd) and "You Don't Know" - ride the line between simple influence and imitation of Tribe's jazz-rap masterpice, but with an intuitive understanding rather than mere bastardization.
"Hooptie Car" shins as a diamond in the rough, dreamily escapist like the Pharcyde's "Passing Me By". As Sunny and Doozer reference Grce Jones and Donna Summer - "Pull up to my bumper," "Toot toot, ah, beep beep" - in mid-rhyme, the irony of this track's dopeness sets in. Because while the Punk Barbarians allude to "Malcolm, Martin and Marcus and W.E.B." on "Rest In Peace" and speak of how their rhymes are "killing you like daily intakes of swine," on "Magic," their real flavor is best presented on frivolous cut like "Hooptie Car."
Sex, Props, Cream & The Drama In Between remains an excellent starting point for the PB quartet, and unless their name erects an Alkaholis-like stumbling block, they should have time to display an interesting evolution.

Originally released in 1997 on CD only, the sophomore album "Everything Is Nice" by Prose & Concepts finally gets the full reissue treatment. The group comprised of MC Dope, SharkE, Mic Dub, Beatnik, DJ Ace and Rawi were sporting the Seattle underground sound of heavy drums and dusty loops paired with cuts back and forth.

In addition, the album includes the "Bass Camp Demo" version of "Higher Places". The original track might be known to diggers from the excellent "14 Fathoms Deep" compilation released on Loosegroove Records in 1996 showcasing the vivid Seattle Hip-Hop scene in the mid-90's.

Third and probably last volume from Gonçalo F. Cardoso’s most disillusioned moniker, Prophetas.

Where the first tape, Reveal, Accept, Remember, Forget, revived mid 50’s ideas of weird hope (ufo sightings, suburbia, space race) and the second, Maury Island Reverie, explored early 90’s disillusionment through a sound world of mall culture, late night cable TV and rampant consumerism, this new work concludes de unplanned trilogy with a more randomised yet no hope approach to the sentiments and concepts explored previously.

Produced over what we call now the pandemic years, and pressed just before the outbreak of yet another war, the feeling here is schizophrenic to say the least : full channel surfing, all tabs open, zero attention span and out of control consumerism has settled into the music (and our lives), the new normal, no time to think, no time for much really, keep going, feel sorry, carry on and die.

The Fake prophets have now established their claws firmly in every corner of our societies, ripping all of our planet benefits whilst leaving nothing in return, the world is now a gigantic cash dispenser, a credit card landfill, everything is up for grabs as long as it can turn a quick profit. Technology? Science? Art? Who needs it when we can just use it to exploit, to make a other quick buck whilst keeping tabs on the population. All this whilst appearing as humanity saviours? I’ve got a plan, it’s ok, let's all go to Mars.

Secret and not so secret wars have been raging since this work was completed. The old present has finally cancelled any possible future, thank god we have the past to look at and wonder… like this tape does, all hail the ubiquitous fake prophets of the 21st century, it’s us!

Ann Arbor's Pity Sex built the world of White Hot Moon, their second album, inch-by-inch. The group, formed in 2011 by childhood friends and lifelong collaborators Sean St. Charles (co-lyricist/drums) and Brennan Greaves (vocals/guitar), came together explicitly to try its hand at writing pop songs. St. Charles and Greaves were putting their hardcore band to rest, enlisting Britty Drake (co-lyricist/vocals/guitar) and Brandan Pierce (bass) to round out Pity Sex's line-up. Now, the band is using the foundation of 2013's celebrated Feast of Love as the framework for something bigger, stronger, and altogether more monumental. Coming off of tours with Ceremony, Eskimeaux, and Colleen Green_including a run in Australia_the band dove into the studio with Feast of Love producer Will Yip to harness that momentum into an album to showcase Pity Sex's growth. And if White Hot Moon wears its ambition on its sleeve, that's by design: the band looked to wide-screen albums by Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth for inspiration in finding a bigger sound. That shows: Drake and Greaves spin huge webs of sound, anchored in shoegaze but branching off in a dozen directions, from fuzzed-out power-pop ("Bonhomie") to shimmering balladry ("Dandelion") and back again, while St. Charles and Pierce lock into step subtly counterintuitive rhythms and floor-shaking low-end.

It’s 2013 in Tokyo. The second worst heatwave in Japan’s history blazes across the land of the rising sun, the Democratic Party of Japan have lost control of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly to the Liberals and somewhere on the subway Nic (Pleasure Cruiser) and George (Smoke Thief) are meeting for the first time. Nic (Chinese-Irish producer with releases on High Hoops, Step Recordings and a participant of Red Bull Music Academy) and George (Tokyo based soundtrack producer and saxophonist with an MA in musical performance) brushed shoulders on the Tozai Subway line, got to talking and have been best friends ever since. The pair created the production duo of Personas – an ambient, soundtrack-leaning moniker – and have been quietly working on their debut album – Zen Koans for Subway Commuters, which features a special collaboration with Japanese electronic composer Soichi Terada under his Omodaka alias – an album that very much does what it says on the tin. Zen Koans for Subway Commuters plays out like the listener's own personal cinematic experience. It’s easy to draw comparisons with the lonerism scores of Tokyo based films such as the Scarlott Johanson and Bill Murray starring Lost in Translation (2003). There’s an isolated aesthetic to the album. It captures the melancholy and freedom that comes with a commute; catching the meditative relief of travel and channelling it into an inner-main character episode as we hurtle to and fro. Floating from the beatless, contemplative pads of ‘Elevation’ to the live-sax of ‘Northside Hibiya Sen’ and the heavily field-recorded experimentation of Ayako and Omodaka’s collaborative ‘Shuuten’, Zen Koans for Subway Commuters maintains it’s interest throughout thanks to it’s variety of ambient sonics and real-life manifestation. Footsteps from heeled shoes clip-clop across sterile white tiles, trains rattle as they pull into the station, voices call out in greeting to friends and loved ones. It’s a trip in every sense of the word, a form of meditative therapy designed to think about nothing or think about everything. Featuring live recordings from the pair's ventures throughout Tokyo, Personas have crafted a mesmerising debut album that pulls on the heartstrings whilst maintaining a complete sense of freedom. Getting on the train to go anywhere is exciting, not just because of the destination, but because of the liberation that comes with sitting down, reading a book or listening to music and knowing you can't do anything else apart from that for a few hours. Intimate, subtle and cinematic, it’s the perfect soundtrack to get lost to.

This collection of electroacoustic vocal and piano improvisations was recorded in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico in the midst of the hottest month in recorded Puerto Rican history (it has since been replaced by a more recent date). While it is certainly not traditional piano and vocal improvisational performance by the strictest definition, in many ways this series of recordings acts as a return to fundamentals in spontaneous sonic exploration with very minimal processing in post-production. With piano and voice being the first instruments learned by the artist as a child, much of these improvisations act as a vehicle of a positive form of musical regression. The challenge at hand is to create a sound as full and textural as that of a fully electronic production across tens of channels, but only through three: piano, voice, and granular synthesis. This is a series of improvisations surrounding the topic of 21st century austerity, focusing specifically on the liberatory nature of certain technological innovations that most in the Global North now take for granted. How can you create art when you're worried about whether the food in your fridge will remain fresh past the evening when the power has been out all day? How can you remain in constant contact with your family and friends when all communications providers are at capacity in the midst of a Hurricane or other natural disasters? As there is no telling how long the power grid is going to remain functional in the oldest colony on the planet, it’s crucial that digital art and performance be produced here and now with the tools available, right up to the very point when they no longer are. Pianovoz Electroacústica places this nowness front and center, it can speak for itself as creative music, but illustrates the need to continue working even as the safety nets surrounding you begin to crumble all the more. This particular album is a concept album based on a book, also titled "Within the Ancient Forest" written by bassist/vocalist Andrew Tompkins. The story is of a young man in search of truth in a land where immortals, dragons, magic, and the powers of darkness prevail. These recordings weren't intended for release, they aren't even demos, but rather exercises – process tracks in an attempt to mirror the influences of an aspiring artist as they oriented their emerging work. Most of the tracks were constructed in single sittings and recorded to cassette at home in Glasgow through a Philips Aw-7694 boombox. That they feel finished, even iconic amid the shortlived confluence between Detroit techno and intelligent dance music, is a testament to what was materialising, but also to our collective nostalgia, revisionism, and thirst to understand how we've arrived here and why. Übungen has that youthful and pre-internet utopian aura, without being tethered to the phony maxed-out optimism ricocheting across the Atlantic in a 4G pollution. That I first came to Dave Clark's earliest work in the anxiety-ripening stage of the pandemic while I was becoming chronically sick – a time when it was all too easy to glide through dystopian nightmares and realities alike – only speaks to the work's presence and its allowance to dream, ahistoricism or splice into the affect of histories, and to dismantle the contemporary, not in an arsy or nihilistic way, but to appreciate (questioningly) the passage of time.

Sitting somewhere between an EP and a full-length, these six pieces predate Dave's other archival release – Sparky's 94Archive2/8 [Rubadub, 2015], which also features cassette transfers originally recorded in stereo without overdubs. As a sound archivist myself, it was a welcome experience first listening to Dave's transfers on headphones while walking around the canals of Maryhill rather than handling the digital captures in a studio. I've been enamored with the music ever since and despite the original utilitarian intention, shifting contexts and the chance to listen afresh decades on allows for clearance (dare I say recuperation). It is, for this reason, and the sardonic re-opening of archival material perverted into something on the ground, that's not merely dog shit, that I am very pleased to finally share this collection.

Each of the titles provides the recording year and is initialed by the respective influence: Carl Craig, Aphex Twin (you'll recognise the shimmering hi-hats), Yellow Magic Orchestra, Black Dog, Polygon Window, and Drexycia.

All music was produced by Dave Clark, except "1993cc" produced by Dave Clark & Graeme Slater, and "1992pw" produced by Dave Clark & Roger Elliott.
