“Billy Boy”, the title track of Modern Romance’s debut on LuLúxpo’s "Paradise Children Records" imprint is an atypical opener for a dance record. Its lackadaisical guitar work feels more like music made for a smokey dive bar in Tennessee or like it accidentally fell off the soundtrack of a lost Tarantino cut. But it’s a stunner nevertheless, the ideal companion to a lazy, hazy sunday. LuLúxpo’s remix is its club-ready counterpart. The label bosses dial down the rockabilly feel and add their distinct slow and sensuous touch. Choice guitar licks are repurposed over a deep, rolling beat, while angelic oohs take a welcome front seat in the song’s second half.

Meant Records welcome accomplished Parisian producer Tim Paris for an EP that features two standout originals and two brilliant remixes from Cosmo Vitelli and Sonns. Over a glittering career, Paris has of course collaborated with Ivan Smagghe, run his own Marketing Music label and turned out a diverse album, ‘Dancers’, for My Favorite Robot. From jacking electro to rugged new wave via freaky house, he has a fully formed palette that is distinguishable by his raw sense of groove and texture. First up here, Paris works with Telemark on ‘Version A,’ seven sizzling minutes of macho robot funk. Whirring synths, twisted bass and chunky drums all get you up on your toes and are sure to inject the crowd with wild spirit. French touch veteran and I’m A Cliche label boss Cosmo Vitelli steps up to remix and brings more punk spirit to a slap-funk track with booming kicks and brain frying chords. It drips with cool and dark libido and is sure to become a real anthem.

It’s a cliché to say an electronic artist is mysterious, but in the case of Guavid it really is true. With just one previous release on Analogical Force, it was tricky even tracking the enigmatic producer down, let alone persuading him to release more of his sublime music. And yet here we are, with a four-track EP of timeless electronica. A bit of a departure from his work on AF, this time the tracks are stripped back electro and techno, the space in the grooves allowing a sense of funk to come through. Essential stuff.

Carl Finlow has been a prominent name in UK electro since the mid-90s, releasing music at an astonishing rate under a variety of monikers. Silicon Scally defines his most strictly electro-oriented project, reflective of the Kraftwerk era and the emerging electro-scene, with releases on respected labels such as Cultivated Electronics, CPU and of course 20/20 Vision, with music from a variety of Carl's monikers being amongst the labels earliest releases. 'Crushed' is a sought after album project originally self-released on Finlow's Bandcamp during the 2020 lockdown. We felt the release was to important to be overlooked without a much deserved run of vinyl, so have pressed a limited run of records featuring futuristic electro highlights and the best unreleased cuts. 'Proton Mass' kicks things off with perfectly crafted robotic funk, solid mechanical breaks and mind bending glitches, setting the landscape for a journey into the abyss with Silicon Scally unshakeably at the helm. 'Centronix' follows up with razor-sharp rocking beats, squelchy bass and jarring grooves as if designed for high pace no nonsense club sets from the likes of DJ Stingray or Helena Hauff. On the flip side 'Axiom' takes us deeper into the void with dark basslines, complex drums and unapologetically disorientating frequencies. A track that makes us question if Finlow has transcend to a future state where he is more machine than man, sending psychoactive messages in the form of killer electro cuts. 'Cascade Lasers' wraps up this epic dose of electro with interstellar energy, driving things home with deep bass wobbles, high octane breaks, wrapped grooves and tormenting yet playful synth licks. Yet another release that has us convinced the late great Andrew Weatherall was indeed correct! XXX is back with an Split 12“ EP. On the A side we have Spencer Miles and on the AA side Zakmina. Once again XXX brings artists from all around the globe together on 12“. Spencer Miles brings us some dark brooding tracks all the way from Oregon, while Zakmina from Lithuania adds up to the heat with two bangers that for sure will shudder the dancefloor. The artwork is by upcoming photographer Joost Termeer, who is based in Utrecht in the Netherlands. When he heard the track he thought of fire, which was the inspiration for the artwork. We couldn’t agree more.

Excellent off-kilter Electro / House EP

Sound Synthesis returns to eudemonia with another stellar acid-infused Electro EP. This time the Maltese delivers four wonderfully crafted tracks that send you to the outer space.

Contrived through a pure spawn of friendship and boundless exploration, Sin Limites began as a jam between Nap, Ex-Terrestrial & Roza Terenzi in Montreal 2018 with no intentions. After a reshape and polish from Priori it found its way back to demolish dancefloors, slipping into mixes over the years and standing the test of time; a micro reissue of sorts finding a home on Delicate Records with a pair of remixes from none other than Ambien Baby & D. Tiffany to keep things in the chosen family. The title track is simple yet bold in nature; daring hypnotic metallic sequence, original Spanish vocals laced throughout by Nap and rough ‘n’ rugged 606 drums; a master in exquisite nuance and tech-evolution. Dormant until 2021, the B side rose from the ashes via the remixes to anoint the record as a three part ode to No Limits; a timeless ethos shared and lived amongst all involved.

Toumba is one of the creative minds behind Mnfa, Jordan's most important underground music venue. He serves there as a booker and curator, bringing the likes of Tsvi, Giant Swan and Parrish Smith to the venue.
He is also anationally respected artist and holds a residency at the Mmag Foundation in Amman. The foundation works with a selection of the most gifted artists in the Levant. By sponsoring Toumba's ongoing artistic practice, Mmag has furthered his research into Levantine music, which he synthesises with avant garde and electronic music.
He is a resident on Movement Radio in Athens and formerly Ma3azef Radio, with guests including Ben UFO, aya and Gabber Eleganza.

If you're a person that likes to get up late, Barış's first track »Noon« is the one for you. It sort of sets the mood for the whole EP with a groove that is deep and hypnotic and above all psychedelic. There's tremolo en masse plus these in and out fading voices that suck you into Mr. K's world - all kept together by this steady forward marching Barış beat. Pleasure, joy, and happiness - all in on groove - and not only effective at noon.

»La Dame Noir«'s most prominent feature is a mean bass line - plus more of those otherworldly sounds that Barış manages to pull out of his magician's hat while creating a superb shuffling riddim for all you dancers to shuffle along to, throwing in that oh so subtle triangle now and then.

With the last track »Valhalla«, Barış enters the mythological place of Asgard, where Valhalla, Odin's hall of the slain can be found in his Glaðsheimr castle. That kinda sounds a bit archaic and dark but don't be afraid: where there is shadow there is also light - light which can be heard in the first opening lines, lines that do sound a bit like played by our favorite shoegazer band "My Bloody Valentine". To get to Valhalla, Barış accelerates the tempo by a couple of beats, yet throws in all trademark ingredients to cook up a tune for peak time dancing in Valhalla … erm … I mean in the club.

Portuguese artist Lake Haze (Goncalo Salgado) makes his return to Shall Not Fade with an album of spacious club music. Salgado is a key player in Portuguese musical exports, delivering masterful blends of techno grooves and retro melodies, and released his debut LP on E-Beamz in 2019. This second LP is titled Sun Rising On Concrete Landscapes. This record explores further the atmospheric, slightly melancholic timbre to Salgado's music. The use of reverb across the LP elucidates a sense of looking back to the past; "The Rave That Saved My Life" sounds like echoes from a distant memory. It turns the sounds of the rave into something sombre, expansive and scattered with space age breaks.

Liege-based Gravitational Effect heralds in Reposition's 3rd release with a dazzling electro EP. The 4-tracker pays tribute to electro's intergalactic appeal, whilst simultaneously espousing a fresh take on euphoric and mind-bending dancefloor music. Across the 3 original tracks, ever-evolving synth patterns and playful melodies meet cosmic tones and finely-programmed drum patterns. For such a release, Radioactive Man fit the bill perfectly to jump on remix duties, especially considering how much the legendary producer has inspired GE's musical outlook. His take on Base Control the most hard-hitting original on the EP) experiments cleverly with the central synth pattern, pitching this down alongside more spaced-out production throughout, to create a 7-min masterpiece of psychedelic and engaging electro.

Live At Robert Johnson welcomes Amsterdam-based DJ and Producer Alain van der Born aka Perdu to the Club, who already made his marks with Releases on Dgtl Records, Heist, and Let’s Play House amongst others. His contribution is a Four Track EP called Soaring Flights, including a Digital only Bonus Track. On this EP, Perdu champions a full-on 1980s sound, which hits more than one Chord in Live At Robert Johnson’s very own set of Styles. Dystopia (co-produced by Tjade) is a High Energy Track, in which a raw and stoic Bass Riff slowly working its way into a Break. It’s the first Break in which the Atmosphere heats up significantly and subsequently sustains for the remainder of this quite enjoyable, and not quite dystopian rush on the Dance Floor. Retrograde immediately kicks off with a South American infused Rhythm Loop, joined by a deep and analogue Bass Serpentine, with bubbly Acid sprinkled along the way. Rise Of F5 brings back those 1980s signature pumping Kick and gated reverb Snare Drums, employing melodic and slightly haunting elements, which eventually dissolve in Euphoria and a Melody to hum along with (or shout, if you prefer). Somehow It’s Different Now concludes in a slightly different and quite mellow vein, that lets you leave this EP on the easy side. Available Digital Only is the Bells Mix Version of Perdu and Tjade’s Dystopia, for those inclined to a more melodramatic Dystopia with added playfulness thanks to, you guessed it, Bells (no whistles, we promise).

Metroplex continues its run of reissues with two more seminal releases from the label's golden back catalog. First off is Catalog number M003, aka late 80's Metroplex electro staple Channel One, a Juan Atkins joint with Doug Craig (Carl Craig's cousin) on vocals. Futuristic and playful techno from the late 80s which soundwise evolves from Cybotron and the obvious Kraftwerk influences. Juan Atkins said about the release in a 2005 interview that "it was more fun than politically driven, just about the colors and combination spread from colors". An important release in the history of Techno from both a cultural and creative perspective. Channel One's technicolor has been carefully remastered from the original tapes. Truly timeless stuff!
