"Something Scary" is probably one of the most representative examples of Belgian New Beat as the genre shifted to Hard Beat, by one of the key figures in the explosion of the early Belgian rave scene Rembert De Smet. Starting with the first few seconds of the track, the listener is presented with what could arguably be one of the most unforgettable New Beat acid bass lines to attack the human ear. Very much in your face, characteristic of a genre that emerges from studio experimentation during a time when Chicago Acid was establishing itself and already contaminating the UK. Although relatively simple in terms of production, the way De Smert employs all the elements at play is ingeniously effective, from the simple vocal sample placement to the bassline, propelling it timelessly throughout decades to follow as an iconic example of the Acid sound in Europe. Zru Vogue is a two man post punk avant-pop group from Palo Alto, California, combining the talents of Andrew Finkle and Rick Cuevas. The band began in 1980 as a four member group: Rick, Andy, Tom Sanders and Nancy Miller. Tom and Nancy left the group shortly after the first single, "Nakweda Dream", was released by independent San Francisco label Adolescent Records in February 1981. Inspired by rave reviews and heavy airplay on alternative radio stations, Andy and Rick went back into the studio, now as a duo, to record some new ZRU tracks. The self-tilted LP was released on the band's Zero Risk Records in 1982. It contains eight compositions blending African tribal and Middle Eastern rhythms, avant-garde rock, minimal electronics, and funk-rock guitars. The duo's sound is inspired by the art and anti-art movements of Dada and Surrealism. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each copy is housed in a replica of the original jacket, which features artwork by the group members, and includes the original 2-sided lyric sheet.

In a city famed for its disparate and varied musical excellence, the Detroit-based alignment of feted electronic artist and producer Shigeto aka Zach Saginaw and rapidly rising Bruiser Brigade member ZelooperZ is an entirely natural thing. Introduced by mutual friends in the city, an instant bond was formed, and ZGTO was born. For Shigeto, this is the first time he's musically stepped out of the box of a solo artist and worked with a vocalist on a project. There is a ''less is more'' philosophy with the production where the vocals of ZelooperZ are seamlessly interlaced into the fabric of the beats. It's minimal in a sense, but the emotion felt through the words of ZelooperZ makes the songs as a whole intense and heavy with sentiment.

Under the alias of Zanov we find the works of French electronic pioneer Pierre Salkazanov, who had started playing guitar in the 1960s in a Shadows styled band, Les Ambassadors. Instrumental rock was not enough for Salkazanov, he was always looking for evolution, so when a meeting with French synth player Serge Ramses (of "Secret" fame) got him into the world of synthesizers he just dived deep into the bourgeoning world of electronic music. He got himself his first syths and started producing works into a 4-track Teac tape machine. French music was at its best, it was the time of Jean Michel Jarre, Didier Bocquet, Richard Pinhas and Heldon, Alain Meunier... Even Gong's Tim Blake was living in France at that time. And so Zanov soon caught the attention of Polydor, who released Green Ray in 1976. It is a work made with minimal equipment if compared to other French sythetists, not to mention their German peers, he worked on the EMS VCS3 synth and used a 4-track Teac and a Revox A77 Mk IV reel to reel tape recorders obtaining huge sound results. You can appreciate an influence from the Berlin school, Green Ray walks the same path of what artists like Tangerine Dream and the likes were producing at the time, Zanov had felt under the spell of Ricochet, but his head was boiling with ideas which gave the recordings a very personal, unique touch.

Zanov's three albums met with unanimous critical acclaim for the sound quality as well as for the originality of this very personal universe.

We offer the first ever vinyl reissue of Zanov's Green Ray under license from Pierre Salkazanov himself and with his cooperation, in a limited edition of 500 copies that reproduce its original artwork, come with remastered sound and an 8 page insert with liner notes and photos courtesy of www.audionautas.com plus one bonus 7" with previously unreleased on vinyl format material.

Released into the wild with no fanfare or prior warning, Yves Tumor makes good on the audience following astonishing singles 'Noid', 'Licking An Orchid (feat. James K)' and 'Lifetime'. Whereas each of these showed a different side to his sound, one that arguably wasn't afraid to immerse itself in the close running interests of skinny-jeans 'n' all indie, heartfelt romantic ballads and soulful RNB bangers, Yves Tumor's seeming refusal to be creatively pigeonholed is the most vital and compelling cog within his musical identity. Safe In The Hands Of Love captures each and every side of Yves Tumor's musicianship with an elegant mix of pop numbers and more "experimental" de-constructions. With the spirit of Danish noise/synth/punk/tekno institution Posh Isolation running through the lifeblood of the music, so much so that in a perfect bonding two of the Posh Isolation crew's finest Loke Rahbek and Frederikke Hoffmeier both appear on the album in solidarity with Yves' vision. The recordings are uncharacterizable as anything other than Yves Tumor music. From the gothic cloak 'n' dagger cyberpunk punishment of 'Hope In Suffering (Escaping Oblivion & Overcoming Powerlessness)' featuring Oxhy & Puce Mary, through to the 'Economy of Freedom' produced with Croation Amor and moving along with all the sludgy heaviness of a thousand broken hearts, the feelings explored upon offer a kaleidoscopic union of classic songwriting and lobotomized sound experiments. Chapters like 'Recognizing The Enemy' and 'Licking An Orchid' capture a sense of near blissful introspective blues, sounding like Yves is rushing into the deepest moments of winter while his words that are seemingly spun out of tears, begin to freeze in the cold night air. Before 'Let The Lioness In You Flow Freely' could be the Whitehouse and Steve Albini post-rock record that never materialized back in the 1990's, while 'Recognizing The Enemy' further explores the gothic soundscape rock 'n' roll (original and authentic shades, slick back and leather jacket) of 'Noid', ensuring that his stadium-sized approach to crafting earworms is well and truly represented.

London producer Yosh continues his hot streak of putting out a twelve inch a month with typically breaksy, UK focused EP on Distant Horizons that further earmarks the emerging artist as one of the producers to watch in 2021.

Following releases on Time Is Now and an announcement on Desert Sound Colony’s Holding Hands sub-label, Yosh serves up four steppers that navigate us from the doors of the club to front left of the speaker. ‘Don’t Say’ is a fast cut of subby breakbeat-garage; the producer’s knack for emotionally stimulating vocal samples and peak-time basslines moving into the frame.

‘All That Acid’ gives squirming acid lines and stripped-back percussion, mutating the breaksy, UK energy into something more electro focused, and in doing so provides what could be the score for an old racing video game, before ‘Choose One’ takes us back into familiar Yosh territory with a cut of dreamy garage, with the odd dubby wobble for good measure.

We finish on a personal note with ‘Home’, a cut that epitomises that good feeling that can only come with returning to a place of comfort; relaxed atmospherics and 2-step rhythms providing the perfect warm up number.

Inspired by ambient, gabber and post-club; contemporary composition, avant-pop and nursery rhymes. Influenced by horror games, nursery rhymes and gabber, Chinese producer Yikii’s first proper full-length is like Tim Burton on mushrooms - like a soundtrack to a Chinese reboot of “A Nightmare Before Christmas” rendered in luscious 4D. Bonkers and brilliant. Since 2017, Changchun-based Yikii has released over 20 albums and EPs, but “Crimson Poem” is her first fully developed statement. It’s an ambitious album that started life as an exploration of microtonality before evolving into a set of quirky, psychedelic songs that pull in ideas from across the spectrum of contemporary culture, from hard dance and avant-pop to traditional Chinese music and drone. But no influence looms larger on “Crimson Poem” than video games. The album sounds completely plugged into the fantasy realm, and uses disparate genre hallmarks with the fizzy abandon of Yuzo Koshiro’s “Streets of Rage” soundtrack or CoLD SToRAGE’s “Wipeout” score. Yikii has no intention of making functional dance music and instead channels pop ideas through a narcotic haze of abstract noise, gothic soundscaping, airlock club and chiming classical music. At any point in the album it’s like hearing multiple personalities communicating with each other, guided by Yikii’s sugar-sweet vocals. There’s trip-hop, trance and sadistic industrial noise on ‘Disillusionment’, Bernard Herrmann-style “Psycho” strings, ambient drone and traditional Chinese music on ‘Phantasmagoria!’, hardstyle and evil nursery rhymes on ‘Afterimage In Ruin’, gabber, punk, industrial and classical on ‘Scavenger’s Daughter’, and so much more. “Crimson Poem” is a unique record that perfectly encapsulates Yikii’s personal world and spectrum of interests. It’s surreal and cute, but never cloying and succeeds in being eclectic without ever losing coherence. Yikii’s world is often terrifying, but it’s never uninviting: imagine Björk, Danny Elfman, Pharmakon, Gabber Modus Operandi and Ziúr shaken into a viscous purple cocktail and you’ll have some idea where this one’s going.

Yen Tech’s second album is fully eye-popping cyber-theatrical medieval deconstructed nu-metal. Like Amnesia Scanner banging out Slipknot covers with Siri and Arvo Pärt in a distant space prison. ‘Assembler’ is a bizarre record, even for Svbkvlt. Yen Tech’s debut “Mobis” was a future-facing hi-tech party rap deconstruction, all blitzed trap and vaporwave shimmer. “Assembler” is completely different proposal, addressing the post-COVID world with growling anxiety and lavish, multidimensional digital fireworks. Hoarse semi-human vocals are meticulously painted over hydraulic, machine-gun kicks, drunken synth drones and simulated choirs. Techpilled harpsichord chimes burp and resonate over swirling, supernatural soundscapes, while alien chatter butts heads with disembodied artificial voices. “Herd immunity,” a voice echoes on ‘Leech’, as unsettling drones build through clouds of white noise. Yen Tech takes Amnesia Scanner’s dystopian deconstructed airlock club template and debones it to fit the actual dystopia of 2021. Jarring, fanged and packed with sneering nu-metal adjacent attitude, “Assembler” sounds as awkward and genre-allergic as an algorithmic playlist. It’s an uneasy listening experience that’s both familiar (‘Extinction Game’ is almost chart-ready future pop) and defiant all at once.

Peer through the windows of the sun-dappled homes in Sicily and you will be faced with a small, strange ceramic object adorning each hallway. It is a glistening pine cone standing upright – a pigna – the longstanding symbol of Sicilian openness and welcome hospitality.

The pigna is a delightfully unusual and yet apt symbol for the title of the third record from Benjamin Harris, AKA Yarni. Ever since his debut LP release in 2017, Yarni has established a following committed to his musical openness, an intuitive curiosity that has spanned everything from house and techno to cinematic ambience and Japanese percussion, as well as jazz horns and afrobeat fanfares. For Yarni, anything goes and everyone is welcome. Now, Pigna sees Yarni reach his fullest and most musically diverse expression, taking its name and ethos from Sicily, but finding a sonic home in the luscious orchestration of a new ensemble of musicians.

Here, at the helm of a nine-person ensemble, Yarni artfully pieces together live improvisations to create the warmth of a seasoned group performing deep within the groove. Opener “Midnight Getaway” places the listener squarely within the disco-funk of Daft Punk as Yarni’s top-line synth intersects with a rolling bassline and a lyrical flute solo from Rachel Shirley. This optimistic tone of sunlit spaciousness is then heightened on “Utopia”, as Yarni’s horn section comes to the fore to pay homage to the ineffable syncopations of Fela Kuti’s pioneering afrobeat.

Rather than scratch at the surface of these musical genres, Yarni’s attuned ear embodies the emotive essence of his various sounds by paying intimate attention to their creation. There is the punch of that afrobeat sax on “Utopia”; the rhythmic skitter of breakbeats on “The Astral”; the sludging thump of funk in the bassline on “Nova”. Collaborators are given free reign, too, to incorporate their own unique stylings into this remarkable whole, from vocalist Emily Marks’ languid tone on “In A Dream”, to saxophonist Jonoa’s innate swing on “Cherub”, and the metronomic movement of bassist Ally McMahon’s playing throughout.

Listening to Pigna is ultimately to find yourself squarely within the comforting embrace of Yarni’s musical mind. It is a truly LP experience – a record to be placed on the turntable’s platter and then left to play, allowing yourself an immersion in these journeying soundscapes. It is no wonder fellow sonic travellers such as the late Andrew Weatherall and DJ Harvey have been supporters of Yarni’s work, since here is a kindred spirit – an artist shaped in the form of radical openness, speaking the hospitable, universal language of beautiful music.

Dadada ism, as with all of Jun Togawa’s projects, is another bestseller in the P-Vine catalogue and was the followup to Dial Y wo Mawase! released in 1992. On Dadada ism, the band began to experiment more with electronic production, and the underlying industrial spirit behind tracks on here could have seamlessly found their way into cyberpunk film soundtracks at the time. As an artist Jun Togawa, to this day is comparable to no one, but we can only hope that in time some may draw comparisons between her work ethic to push the limits of pop, and western artists such as Bjork and Kate Bush.

Their first release of this project (simply entitled 'Rebetika') was for the most part taken from a live recording at the CCA, Glasgow in 2006. For that, Yannis had created processed versions of Andy's favourite Rebetika tunes which served as a matrix or palette onto which both musicians then improvised using electric guitar, live sampling and electronics.

Yamila reveals her most intimate catharsis in Visions, an album that brings together and provokes the hallucinatory powers of music. Like an ancient herald, she announces the profound feminine mystique while crossing epic melodies full of pleasure and pain. This album is a journey that prodigiously unites baroque accents, Spanish folklore – such as flamenco – and contemporary electronic music. Her voice and music – sometimes torn and others buoyant – could resemble the score for a biblical passage (ie. visions of the Apocalypse), for they are overflowing with physical ecstasy and sounds that one can touch. Visions is composed of different forms and rhythms. Pieces like "Visions V" evolve intensely with sharp and systematized hits –– powerful layers that bring us closer to Alessando Cortini's Forse era. "Visions II", for its part, shares intensity and power with flamenco ritual patterns, as if it were an old Andalusian scene dripping with oscillations and electric shocks. Yet there are luminous vocal pieces such as "Visions I" (featuring Rafael Anton Irisarri), inspired by Manuel de Falla's Suite Española composed in 1922. Here, an aural chiaroscuro with beautiful voices and choirs is deeply fused with daring drones. And it is in the ensemble of moments of Visions where Yamila's conceptual axis is rendered solid. Pain and glory, lacerating religiosity, feminism cauterized by power, and hallucinations as a source (or pretext/tool) to be heard. Yamila exhibits a profuse aesthetic with her music that calls for a look at the far-past with romanticism and nostalgia. Visions is radiant, intense. A unique album. Inspired by the Tower card from the Tarot, Tower Moment EP is a cosmic journey through four stages of healing: darkness, acceptance, transformation and freedom.

"Plastic Love" often comes to mind as the quintessential example of City-Pop, originally written and produced by Japanese power couple Tatsuro Yamashita and Mariya Takeuchi in 1984. Later in 1991 it was covered with new Cantonese lyrics by Anita Mui, and now, over 3 decades later, the pursuit to give this song new aesthetics continues with yet another cover with Anita Mui's Cantonese lyrics but with a completely different feel. What could be interpreted as relatively raw production methods is turned into a refreshing take on this classic Japanese 80's anthem. Originally recorded during golden age of Japanese technology with a highly polished sound, Xiaolin gives it a new twist with a rougher edge established by the drum machines and saturated bass echoing video game soundtracks from a bygone era, beautifully juxtaposed with her dreamy vocals. Also included, a karaoke instrumental version on the B-side.

The opening track, Negative Time, is a musical interpretation of zero point energy creation and quantum physics. Danger on the High Seas is a deeper, more straightforward technoish track where light and dark are doing a wonderful mating dance between the crests of the high waves. The song was inspired by the mysterious vanishing of flight-19 in the bermuda triangle.
