Serato DJ Equipment

When you think of DJing, New Zealand doesn’t spring to mind as a great powerhouse of the craft. Surprisingly, this is where the story of the company renowned for changing the face of traditional DJing begins. Established in 1998, the Auckland- based software developer Serato Audio Research started producing performance tools. In their early stages, founders Stephen West and AJ Bertenshaw developed a time-stretching and pitch-shifting Pro Tools plugin, Pitch ’N Time. With that technology they focused on the evolving vinyl emulation software market and developed Scratch Live, introduced in 2004. The software required the use of an external sound card to capture audio of the time-coded audio. For this, Serato cooperated with US-based Rane Corporation. Rane developed the USB based SL1 while Serato was responsible for the necessary control records. In 2006, Serato also launched an online music distribution site that offers file extensions including a mono copy of the song that’s playable in standard players, a high quality Scratch Live version of the song, ID3 meta data, full visual track overview and BPM of the song. Serato didn’t rest on their laurels, they continue to develop innovative tools for digital DJs.
