Much about ‘Beat Bop’ is shrouded in mystery. Who really produced it? Why was Jean-Michel Basquiat relegated from rapper on the track to drawing the cover and labels? What are they actually rapping about for most of the ten-minute length? These questions, however, are all part of the enigma and rich legend surrounding a song that is an undisputed piece of true hip-hop genius. The combination of graffiti artist Rammellzee and rapper K-Rob is a potent one, with each MC adopting a persona - hustler and B-Boy respectively - that they maintain against an unusual swirling backdrop that must be one of the best instrumentals ever committed to wax. The original Tartown Record pressing was limited to 500 copies, a mere test pressing in the eyes of the assembled artists, with scarcity further driven by Basquiat’s rising rep in the art world. Those few hundred copies – and a subsequent re-release on Profile Records (the same label where K-Rob played out the rest of his brief career) – punched well above their weight in terms of lasting influence. Consider the early vocal tones of the Beastie Boys (who also sampled the track), or the huge part it played in the sound of Cypress Hill and B-Real. His voice is almost homage to Rammellzee’s on ‘Beat Bop’, while they also lifted the chorus of ‘Shoot ‘Em Up’ and even a sample of ‘Cypress Hill’ from the track too. It’s unsurprising – this is a multi-layered, complex song that reveals a little more of itself each time you play it but remains damn funky. This reissue boasts the vocal and instrumental versions in full, as well as both the full cover and label artwork from the original Tartown Release.

Ready Ta Roll was a 90’s hip hop group from Jersey City, NJ. Mark “M.C. Supreme” Curry (Rapper/Producer) , Eric “Tysheen” Freeman (dj), Christopher “Rizzo” Warren (Hype-Man) & Joseph “Music Maestro J-Rule” Jenkins (Producer) released several singles including underground classics “The Real Hip Hop” & “Drug Game” between 1993 & 1994. The group’s single “Drug Game” was recognized by The Source magazine with a powerful write up praising them for the songs socially conscious lyrics. The music video was shot by then up and coming video director Hype Williams and debuted on Ralph McDaniel’ Video Music Box as well as Bet’s Rap City. The group parted ways in the late 90’s and Supreme who later changed his name to Chop Diesel went on to form a production collective called “The Dream Team”. Their production credits include Ali Vegas, AZ, Nas, 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Diddy, Run-DMC, DJ Kay Slay, Teddy Riley, Dave Hollister & more.

The Bay Area Legend DJ.Fresh links up with the New Orleans Legend Curren$y for a heralded Tonite Show edition. DJ. Fresh's The Tonite Show has featured some of rap's most notable figures such as Trae The Truth, Mozzy, Raekwon the Chef and more. Currren$y is a well known figure in the underground hip-hop scene collaborating with today's hottest producers and staying consistent with one of the biggest solo catalogs to date. DJ.Fresh & Curren$y began collaborating on the 2009 (Wiz Khalifa/Curren$y) joint album and the magic just kept progressing from there. The chemistry of DJ.Fresh's bass heavy tracks and Curren$y's deep, syrupy vocal styling made this pairing one for the record books. Coming from (2) different sides on the map, each bring their respected audience to the party which makes this project even more special. Experimental hip-hop group Clipping's "The Deep" is a dark sci-fi tale about the underwater-dwelling descendants of African women thrown off slave ships, based on the mythology of Detroit electronic group Drexciya. The song was originally commissioned for a This American Life about Afrofuturism in 2017. The track earned Clipping a nomination for a 2018 Hugo award, and the band constructed a sound installation based on "The Deep" at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. This release comes on the heels of the November 5th release of The Deep, a novella by Rivers Solomon (with Clipping credited as co-authors) inspired by the title track and published by Saga Press. The vinyl and digital versions include two otherwise-unreleased extra tracks - including "Aquacode Databreaks," which features Shabazz Palaces - and the vinyl edition includes instrumental versions of all three tracks.

This was the first release from Anderson .Paak & Knxwledge as Nxworries: "Suede" and "Link Up" were their first two tracks. "Droogs" is a Knx remake of an Anderson .Paak single. Instrumentals and bonus beats around out the EP.

The dynamic new collection is built around previously unheard tracks created by Illa J’s brother: the late, great J Dilla (James Yancey). With Frank Nitt’s standing as J Dilla Music Catalog Curator and the official approval of Yancey Media Group, all productions on "Sunset Blvd." originate from The Lost Scrolls — the stunning cache of beats Dilla left behind.
The first official single from "Sunset Blvd." is "Quicksand" which features Common & Dezi Paige. And the B-Side is no sleeper; “The Fisherman” is a full-court press featuring a chorus from Vice and blistering rhymes from Detroit Serious and cuts by J.Rocc of Beat Junkies. The track is, as Frank Nitt promises, “guaranteed to make you bang your head!” Nitt also reminds us that “this isn’t a nostalgia trip: Dilla’s beats were so future-forward that they’re right on time in 2013.”

All previously unheard and unreleased. Been droppin snippets on Instagram and heads have been Flippin out. Enjoy yo!!!

So Joe City aka Third Eye Ent hits me up and says B, hook up with my man Strez, he might have some ish you are looking for. So outta Norfolk, Virginia, this is the Foundation Entertainment EP. Most of these tracks appeared on an extremely rare couple of cds from 97 & 99 as well as one off a demo tape and one unreleased from the House of Reps unreleased stash!!! Peep this short interview with DJ Strez for some background info:



Where did you grow up? “I grew up in the Park Place/Villa Heights section of Norfolk Virginia born & raised.”

What are your earliest memories of the culture? “My earliest moments of the culture are begging my mom to go to the record store to buy The Fatboys first album, LL Cool J “Radio”, Run-D.M.C. “Raising Hell” & Beastie Boys “Licensed To Ill” albums. When I got home that day I played these albums non stop. That’s when I knew I was in love with Hip Hop.”

Who were your fav beatmakers coming up? “My Favorite Beat Makers/Producers coming up was Marley Marl, Pete Rock, The Bomb Squad, DJ Premier, Large Professor, Diamond D & Joe City (VA Native)”

What was the VA scene like? “The VA Scene Between 1991-2001 was a great time to be involved with music.A lot of local artists that were coming out started making tapes and selling them at shows or in the clubs.We had so many outlets back then and the major artists were also coming down checking the scene out as well. We definitely had hidden gems as far as talent.”

When did you start making beats? “I started making beats when I was around 16 years old. I was always fascinated with making music and always wanted to learn. The music that was made between “87-99″ was always mind blowing to me. Once i realized that they were taking loops from old records,sampling and making beats out of them i knew that that is what i wanted to do”

What were your first bits of gear? “My first bits of gear was a Casio Sk-1, a Gemini Sampler Ds-1224, a Korg M1, a Boss Dr-5 & a Pair of technics belt drive turntables.”

When did you set up Foundation Ent? “Foundation Ent was formed around 93-95 through my partner Carlton Barnard and he was also my manager. We met at a mall out here in VA called Military Circle in 1996 and we chopped it up and immediately clicked. It all started and developed when he said he had equipment that wasn’t really being used and i asked him if i could use it and eventually it led to us getting a building for a studio and signing artists.”

How did you hook up with all the mcs? “Before Foundation Ent, I was in a group with a friend of mine named Stratagee Real which later became an artist on Foundation Ent so we were already connected. Carlton did beats and had the group Coalition & a female artist named Bad News already so we started teaming up and recording music together in the studio. The other artists that were on the roster were mostly people that we came across that rap and sing.”

Straight out of Baltimore, Maryland we have a crew known as Afiliashun. This monster grail has been on indy-heads wants lists for a minute. It took a few years to get hold of the original studio DAT - big up to producer Reg E Ruckus for diggin through his storage unit multiple times before finally finding the crown jewels. 45 rpm loud pressing! Peep it, don’t sleep it!!!!

This one blew my goddam socks off when I heard it. I hit up Rich who I'd been trying to connect with for years and he sent me this project by a group called Sore Loserz who never released a thing back in the day. Sore Loserz were So Devine - DJ/Producer and Skee The Y-Know [pronounced “wino”] the MC. The project was produced by the Erbs [later renamed DBC Elements Inc.] which comprised of Rich Blak, Chocolate Tye and So Devine.



One of my favourite Herring unknowns, this 6 tracker has the feel of a Bushwick project, with Finsta Bundy & Poetikal Thugz on background vocals and production kind of on an Arsonists tip [imo]. Just a stunning never leaked, never heard before project from 1994. Heads are gonna love it!!!!

NJ in the house once again, this time with completely unreleased production by the prolific, as of late, DJ Izniz. The group is Ill Behavior, which equals Izniz on the boards and two early Wu influenced emcees, and together they paint from a dark palette over a gritty early 90s soundscape.

Legendary hip-hop producer DJ Premier has relaunched the iconic Payday Records on its 25th Anniversary with his first two singles, the anthemic "Our Streets" featuring A$AP Ferg and the super gritty "Wut U Said?" featuring Casanova. There will be a limited edition throwback Payday 12" black vinyl single commemorates one year since the relaunch of the label, and includes extra loud audiophile pressings of the main and clean edits, plus is the first place to cop the highly sought-after and previously unreleased boom bap instrumental versions of these tracks.

Becauseweliveit are dropping their debut release. And they're doin' it the right way. A classic black 180 gr 33,3 rpm 12" maxi-single including 3 versions plus the respective instrumentals of the smasher track “To The Fullest”.

On 12 Finger Dan's original version they got REKS, Masta Ace, and Rakaa Iriscience [of Dilated Peoples] droppin' powerful verses – that's Hamburg, Boston, New York, and Los Angeles united for the cause of that boom-bappin' true Hip Hop.

For the cuts Stevie Drumz from Munich joined 12 Finger Dan of Soulbrotha, and they went crazy. The spherical Dilla-esc Rekless remix does not only feature an extra Roger Rekless verse and him plus his companion Boshi San singin' the hook. But also some extra keys by Ningu Strom of Tribes of Jizu, and scratches by Al Rock who is one of Roger's 4zu1 crew members.

Version #3 is on a beat by Munich Boom Bap producer Roccwell. Besides REKS, Ace, and Rakaa another LA legend stepped up to the mic. Mykill Miers the Hitchcock of Hip Hop! DJ Aspect, former IDA/ITF champion, also from Munich, did what a dj gotta do.

The Mecc consist of Chief Rhythm, Gbo, Xtra, Doc Terror and Producer Dooley-O. This album represents the grimy era of hip hop. 1994”

And here we have it people – the previously CD-only-released 1992-1993 demos on vinyl for the very first time. Classic unreleased Tuff Crew business from back in the archives of legendary DJ Too Tuff. All these joints were recorded on a Tascam 488 8-track cassette with the beats created on an Akai MPC 60. Some killers on here for fans of the group as well as the golden era heads out there. Here are 6 crazy nice joints from the project, all transferred from original tapes, reels and DATs. If you don’t know, now you know. BAM!!!!

This is a real low key one, but a helladope one. Cats will know Born-God from NY mid 90’s crew Now Born Click. His cousin, producer and mentor you will know from the previous release on Herring, Russ Prez – and he is responsible for the dope production on this flavasome EP. This project only had a limited cassette release back in 1994 and is extremely hard to find. So we had to bring it on wax for the headz. All joints transferred from the original studio DATs and included is a previously unreleased banger!! R.I.P. Born-God. Shout out to Thomas Stephansen!

Damn – this is a dope one!! Page The Hand Grenade aka Stanley Grimes is known mostly for his classy mid-90’s features on D.I.T.C. projects. He featured on Lord Finesse’s “Check Me Out Baby Pah” and O.C. “Weak Ideas” as well as the exceedingly dope Buckwild produced track “Mass Hysteria” from the D.I.T.C. CD “Unreleased Production 1994”. He also was a member of Freestyle Professors and featured on a bunch of their releases and back in the day went by the name of Rampage The only thing the man like Grimes hasn’t done is drop a solo project – that is until now!!
