How do I assemble my Portablism setup?

Portablism takes you and your turntablism to any place you like. All you need is a battery-operated portable turntable, a fader (built-in or external), a few scratch vinyl 45s, and last but not least, speakers that will make your sound heard.

Of course, there are countless mods to customize your setup to your individual needs and abilities. This starts with the turntable, which already has a built-in fader or scratch switch in the case of the Numark PT01 Scratch or the new Reloop Spin. Here you will find optimized Portable Fader models from Jesse Dean Designs, which you can easily exchange.

However, many DJs, especially those with turntablism experience, are used to having the fader next to the turntable. For this purpose, there are Portable Faders e.g. from Raiden, which are best placed on the »Side Click« of Turntable Training Wax.

As further Portablism Mods for your turntable there are the retrofittable tonearms from Jesse Dean, which improve both the sound and the track fidelity of the needle during scratching significantly. You can also increase the range of needles you use for your routine. With a digital start/stop button or improved needle illumination for perfect night vision, small improvements can be made quickly and easily. Solid Cutz’s solid aluminium turntable plattern also provides more stability during scratching. A clear recommendation for any solid battle setup.

A good speaker system is necessary to ensure that your performance is equipped with the right sound. This is where minirig’s Brits deliver probably the best system currently available. Powerful, rugged, plenty of battery life, wirelessly connectable via Bluetooth and expandable for real stereo sound, you get the full package here. With the “Portable Subwoofer”, you can also eliminate the last weakness of a portable sound system. You won’t be lacking bass any more.

But the best sound still comes from the record and of course you need it for your portable set. Battle Breaks and Scratch Sounds by DJ Qbert, Ugly Mac Beer, Ritchie Ruftone and others now offer a large selection in 7-inch format. The best thing to do is to underlay your vinyl with the matching slipmat, which also has the necessary gliding characteristics, such as those offered by Dr. Suzuki. In order to transport your vinyl accordingly, all you need is a compact 45 record bag.

If you have the equipment for your Portablism setup together, it’s about what applies to all areas of DJing: practice, practice and practice again! We wish you a lot of fun!
