Producer, writer, drummer, MC, DJ, jack-of-all-trades, master of none, J-Zone presents the latest installment in his limited quantity, half-instrumental-half-rap 7” single series. “Funky” is just that – an instrumental driven by growling guitars, dirty Moog melodies, Meters-inspired live drumming and an 8-bar break that lives up to the title.

The b-side/vocal cut, “Go Back To Sellin’ Weed,” attacks rap squeegeemen aggressively selling rap CD-R demos in the street and celebrities on the other end of the income spectrum abusing Kickstarter. With cameos from Prince Paul and J-Zone sidekick/antagonist, Chief Chinchilla, the pitiful cheapening of hip-hop is addressed with the trademark humor the three rap misfits are known for. Musically, the off-kilter church organs revisit vintage, early 2000s J-Zone, while the off-kilter rhythms channel Zone’s recent foray into drumming.
