Back in 2012 Labba and PF Cuttin released their collaboration full-length "Blunts Bongs Bitches". The album featured some incredible street bangers and was presented with 2 singles "1000 Lbs" featuring Action Bronson and Ike Eyes, and "World Famous" featuring the late great Sean Price and Meyhem Lauren. In collaboration with the artists Tuff Kong has decided to bring the 2 singles, including remixes by Cuns and all instrumentals, on a limited edition vinyl release!

Visionary “Rap” EP by precocious 18-year-old duo Eric Davis (elv) and Chuck Prater (Chuk Chu) from 1989. Imagine if Schoolly D had joined Native Tongues and made an early hiphouse EP produced by Larry Heard.

The story of Me & E took shape in Avalon Park in South Chicago, a vibrant, diverse, and politically active community with a rich musical culture. This was the fertile playground for producer Eric Davis (elv) and lyricist Chuck Prater (Chuk Chu). The park itself was adjacent to Eric’s backyard and they would hop the fence to listen to music, drink beers, and freestyle, even in the middle of the notoriously cold Chicago winters. Eric’s dad, Arlington Davis Jr., was a jazz drummer who played in the legendary spiritual jazz group The Awakening in the ‘70s. Jazz ran deep in their family with proud connections to Miles Davis. Arlington would host weekly jam sessions at his home, and Chuck & Eric were in regular attendance. On those evenings, Eric and his brothers were able to take turns on the sticks alongside the veteran players, honing their fledgling chops. These experiences gave them the confidence to take music seriously, and start a group. Channeling his drumming skills through an array of synths and drum machines, Eric produced tracks in his bedroom, inspired by artists like The Art Of Noise, Kraftwerk, and New Order. Combining their atmospheric electronic elements with his jazz background, and beat-making skills, he created a distinct sound that still sounds fresh today. Chuck was listening to Hendrix,

Joplin, Public Enemy, MC Lyte, and Big Daddy Kane and developed a unique and uplifting lyrical flow. They met up after school almost every day to make music, and quickly produced the four songs that make up their Rap EP.

The music duo never lost touch, and continued to produce throughout the 90’s, forming Rich Boys, another rap group with their crew from Avalon Park. In 1995, Chuk Chu released a solo album, Memoirs of a Blue Light Special, focussing on a more sample based production style. Eric inspired by the house scene in Chicago, produced some ethereal and otherworldly electronic music, which Mixed Signals is compiling for future release. The Rap EP is just an introduction to the ongoing story of Me & E. Mixed

Madsol Desar is a DJ/Producer who did a mixtape with Wyclef Jean that you probably heard.

He also DJ'd at that time for Talib Kweli, did production for The Last Emperor, Sadat X, Edo G and Da Bulldogs, Immortal Technique and Laster just to name a few.

The Bay Area Legend DJ.Fresh links up with the New Orleans Legend Curren$y for a heralded Tonite Show edition. DJ. Fresh's The Tonite Show has featured some of rap's most notable figures such as Trae The Truth, Mozzy, Raekwon the Chef and more. Currren$y is a well known figure in the underground hip-hop scene collaborating with today's hottest producers and staying consistent with one of the biggest solo catalogs to date. DJ.Fresh & Curren$y began collaborating on the 2009 (Wiz Khalifa/Curren$y) joint album and the magic just kept progressing from there. The chemistry of DJ.Fresh's bass heavy tracks and Curren$y's deep, syrupy vocal styling made this pairing one for the record books. Coming from (2) different sides on the map, each bring their respected audience to the party which makes this project even more special. Representing Protect Ya Neck Ent from the early days, we have a Russ Prez producer project on Herring. Russ worked with a bunch of Wu-Affiliate artists including Deadly Venoms, Killarmy and the super-dope KGB. He also produced the much in-demand Lac Rippa aka Lac Tha Rippa – Let’s Get It On 12″ on Mentally Disturbed East West. Russ dug out the 2 tracks from that grail plus 2 unreleased Lac joints, 2 unreleased joints from KGB and a heater from The Massive entitled A L L A H. Indie heads peep it, this is a bangin 7 track EP of 90’s flaaaayyyyva….

This is a real low key one, but a helladope one. Cats will know Born-God from NY mid 90’s crew Now Born Click. His cousin, producer and mentor you will know from the previous release on Herring, Russ Prez – and he is responsible for the dope production on this flavasome EP. This project only had a limited cassette release back in 1994 and is extremely hard to find. So we had to bring it on wax for the headz. All joints transferred from the original studio DATs and included is a previously unreleased banger!! R.I.P. Born-God. Shout out to Thomas Stephansen!

Damn – this is a dope one!! Page The Hand Grenade aka Stanley Grimes is known mostly for his classy mid-90’s features on D.I.T.C. projects. He featured on Lord Finesse’s “Check Me Out Baby Pah” and O.C. “Weak Ideas” as well as the exceedingly dope Buckwild produced track “Mass Hysteria” from the D.I.T.C. CD “Unreleased Production 1994”. He also was a member of Freestyle Professors and featured on a bunch of their releases and back in the day went by the name of Rampage The only thing the man like Grimes hasn’t done is drop a solo project – that is until now!!

In 1990 Vancouver’s E.Q. dropped their one and only 12”, "Put Your Body In It”, on Infinite Beat Records. The A-side is a fairly formulaic hip-house affair but the B-side cut, “They Can’t Cope’, is a much better reflection of what this crew were all about. In contrast, the 1990 cassette release of "They Can't Cope" is currently, somewhat optimistically we might add, available on Discogs for a cool $350! This E.P. comprises three of the tracks from that cassette release, together with previously unreleased instrumentals, as well as two additional never before heard vocal tracks that didn't fit (both literally and artistically) on our Swellsville Sessions E.P. Of particular note, "Too Much For The Mental" is as good as anything from the early 90's and leaves you wondering how this crew never blew up. This is not only a great record but also Vancouver and Canadian hip-hop history!

Experimental hip-hop group Clipping's "The Deep" is a dark sci-fi tale about the underwater-dwelling descendants of African women thrown off slave ships, based on the mythology of Detroit electronic group Drexciya. The song was originally commissioned for a This American Life about Afrofuturism in 2017. The track earned Clipping a nomination for a 2018 Hugo award, and the band constructed a sound installation based on "The Deep" at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. This release comes on the heels of the November 5th release of The Deep, a novella by Rivers Solomon (with Clipping credited as co-authors) inspired by the title track and published by Saga Press. The vinyl and digital versions include two otherwise-unreleased extra tracks - including "Aquacode Databreaks," which features Shabazz Palaces - and the vinyl edition includes instrumental versions of all three tracks.

German beatmaker BoFaatBeatz is mad prolific on the boards. Dude has hundreds if not thousands of instrumentals. I hit him up when I saw he’d just recorded features with Recognize Ali and Kwest who’s projects I released earlier this year. We had a good chat and he kindly allowed Herring to have free reign over selecting tracks for an album project on Herring. There were loads to choose from and dude sent us a constant flow of newly recorded joints as well as some stuff from the Hannover archives!! He then remixed a load of those joints and dropped the remixes on digi and limited cd leaving the “original” unheard versions for this “The Original Nothing But Kung Fu LP” on Chopped Herring Records. In some ways similar to the well-received AJ Munson LP we dropped from late 2018, Kung Fu includes verses from a bunch of low key and new mc’s from all over the States. As well as the heavy hitters mentioned above, there is also an ill jawn by Nine & Smoothe The Hustler. What’s not to like?? Check it out y’all!!!

After 2017’s 10 year anniversary tour of Below The Heavens and a b-sides/rarities release in In The Beginning many wondered whether or not Blu & Exile would ever reunite for a proper new release or if that year was as much a curtain call as it was a celebration. Back in 2013 Jorun-P.M.C graced us with the phenominal Magic Disco Machine EP. Since then Jorun Bombay has released a host of singles and edits becoming the world’s foremost remixer/editer. Phill Most Chill has lent his vocal talents to too many projects to name but most importantly the staggering Fabreeze Brothers album alongside Paul Nice back in 2015 – one of the most successful and acclaimed truly independent Hip Hop records in the last decade.
