Above the Law is one of the best and most underrated rap groups from the west coast, and 'Uncle Sam's Curse' may be their best album. Musically it is very experimental. Producer Cold 187um, one of the west coast's best beatmakers, uses some electronic instrumentals with his usual heavy bass and whiny synths to create an almost futuristic sound, aided by frequent movie samples, snippets of speeches which people express their urban political views. The production is classic and the rhymes are deep and real. Their flows are laid back and sound like they are lacking some aggression and energy, but it is their own thing, and what they rap about is real. This is pure West Coast G-Funk in your ear!

The first signing from Ruthless Records

Above the Law was a groundbreaking music group that emerged from the West Coast hip hop scene in the late 1980s. Their unique blend of G-funk and socially critical lyrics set them apart and had a lasting influence on the rap genre. Above the Law, consisting of key members KMG the Illustrator, Cold 187um, Go Mack and Total K-Oss, played a crucial role in shaping the sound of West Coast hip hop. The group’s early years were marked by their collaboration with another legendary West Coast gang, N.W.A. They were the first artists to be signed to Eazy-Es Ruthless Records, a label that was instrumental in the development of gangsta rap. Above the Law’s debut album, Livin’ Like Hustlers (1990), was a milestone in the genre. It was produced by Dr. Dre and laid the foundation for G-Funk, which is characterized by its soft, synth-heavy beats. Songs like Murder Rap and Untouchable, which showcased their lyrical prowess and clever storytelling, earned them critical acclaim and a growing fan base.

Street poetry

In 1991, they followed up with V.S.O.P. (Virgin Soldiers of Peace), which further explored the G-Funk sound. Tracks like Black Superman and Pimp Clinic proved the group’s ability to create catchy, funky melodies while addressing social issues that plagued their community. They were among the first to weave stories from the streets with conscious themes, helping to solidify gangsta rap as a vehicle for commentary on the realities of urban life. On their third album Black Mafia Life (1993), Above the Law deepened their unique style. The vinyl featured a wider range of musical influences, including jazz and funk, and continued to address themes of racial inequality and urban violence. It also highlighted their versatility, as they transitioned seamlessly between hardcore gangsta rap and more melodic, introspective tracks. However, despite their talent and influence, commercial success eluded them to a certain extent. Their albums, while critically acclaimed, did not achieve the massive sales figures of some of their West Coast counterparts. Still, they were revered in the hip hop community, especially by those who appreciated their complex lyrics and willingness to address important social issues.

The mentors of gangster rap

In the mid-1990s, Above the Law went through several line-up changes, with KMG and Cold 187um being the constant core members. They released several more vinyls independently, including Uncle Sam’s Curse (1994) and Legends (1998). These albums, while not as well known, show their continued dedication to their craft and ability to adapt to the changing hip hop landscape. The group’s influence went beyond their music. They were among the first to introduce the “G-Funk” sound, which was later popularized by artists like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Warren G. The smooth, synth-driven beats and melodic hooks that characterized G-Funk became a defining element of West Coast hip hop and an enduring legacy of Above the Law’s work. Above the Law’s influence on the music industry can also be seen in their role as mentors. They played a crucial role in the early careers of artists such as Kokane, who rose to prominence in the West Coast Hip Hop scene. While they may not have achieved the commercial success of some of their peers, their influence on hip hop, both musically and thematically, is undeniable. Above the Law’s commitment to addressing important issues through their music and their pioneering role in the development of G-Funk solidify their place in hip hop history.
