Black Sabbath began work on their seventh studio album, Technical Ecstasy, in Miami, Florida, in June 1976. During the recording of the record Ozzy Osbourne admitted that he began losing interest in Black Sabbath and considered the possibility of working with other musicians. Recording sessions were difficult and by the time the album was completed, Osbourne was admitted to Stafford County Asylum in Britain. Released on 25th September 1976, the album featured less of the doomy, ominous sound of previous efforts, and incorporated more synthesisers and up-tempo rock songs. Technical Ecstasy failed to reach the top 50 in the U.S., and was the band's second consecutive release not to achieve platinum status, although it was later certified gold. Touring in support of the new release began in October 1976, kicking off in the U.S. with openers Boston and Ted Nugent. This live performance is however a necessary step forward.

Driven by the devil

In the West Midlands of the United Kingdom, a band formed in 1968 that played distorted blues rock at languid tempos and started a new trend with lyrics about drugs, mental pain and the hideousness of war. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward laid the foundation for the metal generation that followed in their wake. Initially called Polka Tulk Blues Band and later Earth, the band toured England before renaming themselves due to a mix-up with a local band. Legend has it that their song Black Sabbath was inspired by Butler’s mysterious experience in which a black figure frightened him at the foot of his bed one night. The black magic novels of Dennis Wheatley and the horror movie director Boris Karloff helped the band to create their new melancholic sound, perfected by the tritone-based riffs (also called Diabolus in Musica) into an overall concept. Local music manager Jim Simpson provided the band with 1000 pounds to record their debut album Black Sabbath, which was released by Vertigo Records in 1970.

Doom metal frenzy

In the doom metal frenzy they had just found, they immediately followed it up with a second disc that would become their most successful to date. Paranoid was released in 1970 by Vertigo in the UK and Warner Brothers in the US, reaching the top of the album charts and selling over 12 million copies. Black Sabbath was unconventional, loud and dark, which could not be said of most rock bands in the late 60s. The rough, almost nihilistic direction, reminiscent of the rowdy vibes of the Rolling Stones , The Who or The Doors, went over extremely well with the younger generation. Master of Reality was a continuation of their distinctive sound and is considered one of the biggest influences for the sludge metal, stoner rock and doom metal genres. It includes the hits Sweet Leaf , Into The Void and Children Of The Grave . The band developed rapidly, writing ballads or instrumental songs from time to time, which can be heard on their album Vol.4 , such as the song Changes. They added more European folk elements and gothic flourishes to their sound, which made them one of the most distinctive bands of the 70s. In Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage , the band brought back their iconic sound and said goodbye to the soft-spoken ballads of the previous vinyls. Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die were the last two albums with Ozzy Osbourne, who was fired in 1979 for excessive drinking. This was followed by numerous member changes and more albums such as Heaven and Hell , Mob Rules , Headless Cross , Cross Purposes and Forbidden . Also available on vinyl are the live albums Live At Last , Attention Black Sabbath Vol. 2 and Heaven in Hartford fronted by Ronnie James Dio and a Sabotage Super Deluxe Box .

Of solo careers and lawsuits

After Ozzy Osbourne launched his mega successful solo career and became prominent through the MTV series The Osbourne’s , the four members reunited in December 1997. In addition to appearing in the rock ‘n’ roll parody Spinal Tap , they finished in second place on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock , just behind Led Zeppelin , and were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Black Sabbath was arguably not only the first heavy metal band, but also directly influenced many later metal sub-genres with their sound and imagery. On May 26, 2009, Osbourne filed a lawsuit against Iommi in federal court in New York, claiming that he was illegally claiming the band’s name. Iommi pointed out that he had been the only member of the band for its entire forty-one years and that his bandmates had given up their naming rights in the 1980s, so he claimed more rights to the band’s name. Although Osbourne is claiming 50% of the trademark rights in the lawsuit, he hopes the process will result in an equal division of rights among the four founding members.
