So much legendary hip-hop begins with a misunderstanding. You might not realise it on first or even hundredth listen, but ‘Insane in the Brain’ is a diss track. What has become one of the hip-hop’s most iconic party anthems, and one of Cypress Hill’s biggest hits, started out with them taking offence at Chubb Rock.
He’d flipped some of their lyrics on his own ‘Yabba Dabba Doo’ song in 1992 and the group didn’t like it. While B-Real’s lyrical attack on Chubb is subtle and almost subliminal, Sen Dog spends most of his verse making fat jokes at Chubb’s expense.
It’s a little known beef, hidden beneath the vast success of this single in 1993, with it reaching number one in the US rap charts and proving a pop hit worldwide too. At this stage, the group’s producer DJ Muggs had perfected an idiosyncratic sound all of his own, lending it to tracks for the likes of House of Pain and Funkdoobiest.

Here he melds samples from Sly and the Family Stone and The Youngbloods with a beat lifted from George Semper’s instrumental cover of ‘Get out my life, woman’. Those subtle songs are alchemised into a boot-stomping head-nodder that transcended hip-hop to become a festival favourite, a rise that ended in Ned Flanders delivering the line, “this may sound just a teensy bit insane in the old membrane, Homer,” in The Simpsons.

The only official 7” of this was released in the Philippines, and fetches prices in the hundreds of pounds – this reissue puts a hip-hop classic in crate-friendly form.

Cypress Hill is widely respected and considered to be amongst the main
progenitors of West Coast rap and Hip Hop in the early 1990s.
With mega-hits like “Insane in the Brain”, “I Wanna Get High” or “Tequila
Sunrise” they crossed-over to mainstream breaking all records for a rap
band up until that time. Cypress Hill were the first Latino-American hiphop
group to have RIAA Certified platinum and multi-platinum albums.
As musicians they became famous for the crazy sounds produced by DJ
Muggs and Bobo and the stoner sympathetic lyrics of B-Real and Sen
Dog. They redefined and shattered the boundaries of hip-hop, crafting
gutter-dirty tracks that fused deep bass lines with blissful, stoned-out
melodies and aggressive hard rock riffs, creating a unique imprint.
.
This is an esential and powerful weapon for all the Hip Hop creators and
DJ´s.

They are considered to be among the main progenitors of West Coast Rap and Hip Hop in the early 90s, being critically acclaimed for their first four albums.

The band has also been important for the advocacy of medical and recreational use of cannabis in the United States.

Los Grandes Éxitos en Español is a greatest-hits album in Spanish by Cypress Hill. It was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

With exception of the last track, which was previously unreleased, together with "Latin Lingo," and "Tres Equis" which appeared on Cypress Hill, the album features old songs with new Spanish lyrics.

On July 20, 1993, Los Angeles hip-hop legends Cypress Hill unleashed their sophomore opus Black Sunday on the unsuspecting masses. The record changed rap music with its dark undercurrent, Latin inflection, no-holds-barred storytelling, and the inimitable interplay between B-Real and Sen Dog cast over psychedelically spun rap soundscapes courtesy of DJ Muggs.

Now to mark the 30th anniversary, two new remixes are available for fans on 12” black vinyl; “Insane in the Brain” from the esteemed DJ/Producer Statik Selektah, and “Hits From The Bong” crafted by the album’s original producer himself, DJ Muggs.

To Commemorate The 30 Year Anniversary Of Cypress Hill, Get On Down Presents A Series Of 7 Inch Singles Of Every Cut From One Of The Most Legendary Debuts Of All Time. When Cypress Hill came with their debut self-titled album 30 years ago, they made an immediate spark that captivated the Hip Hop audience, critics, and then the world. Led by B-Real with his nasal, singsong delivery, and Sen Dog to play the perfect hypeman, Cypress’ debut fueled tales of revenge, revolution, recreational drug use, gangbanging, and cultural pride. Like Public Enemy before them, the production was also a key factor in what made this debut so groundbreaking. DJ Muggs was able to craft a blueprint that would change Hip Hop production with his innovative stoned-out beats. Cuts like "How I Could Just Kill a Man", "Pigs", "Stoned is the Way of the Walk" and "Hand on the Pump" made Cypress Hill an instant classic. Since its release, the album has won acclaim as one of Rolling Stone's Essential Recordings of the 90s and Top 100 Best Rap Albums by The Source Magazine.

Since its release, the album has won acclaim as one of Rolling Stone's Essential Recordings of the 90s and Top 100 Best Rap Albums by The Source Magazine.

Journalist and author Chris Faraone highlights the group's relationship in the reissue's liner notes saying, "[By the late 80s] the undisputed Cypress unit finally formed. B and Sen realized that their diametric styles - the latter's deep wrangle, the formers inimitable high notes - complemented one another righteously. By then Muggs had bangers in the bag, as well as industry experience from a jaunt with the New York duo 7A3. B and Sen waited while Muggs messed with 7A3, and in that time began to build the blueprint for their raucous and weeded no-holds-barred style. Besides getting schooled on industry pitfalls, Muggs had also grown into hip-hop's most formidable young producer, while straddling the bi-coastal gap."

Faraone was able to dive in deep with the band for the liner notes, hearing story after story, including the particularly interesting tale of their unlikely 91 radio hit, "How I Could Just Kill A Man". In the B Side wins again story, the group recalls receiving resistance from the label in regards to which single should hit radio first. Initially, the label thought "How I Could Just Kill A Man" was too risky, and even though the single initially "The Phuncky Feel One", one of the album's strongest cuts, as the A-Side, college and commercial mix-show radio couldn't resist the dusted, heavy groove of Kill A Man. The song – which included a catchy, LA drive-by-inspired chorus – ended up as an unlikely, but powerful double A-sided single that even topped the Billboard Rap charts. More singles would follow, including "Hand On The Pump"; "Pigs"; and "Latin Lingo". And by the fall of 1991, the album was a full-blown critics darling. If you are a Cypress Hill fan and 45 collector this limited edition 30 year Anniversary 7” boxset is a must have!

Hip-hop giants Cypress Hill have announced new album 'Elephants On Acid'.

The project finds producer DJ Muggs returning to helm the project, the first full length he has worked on with the group for over a decade.

Out on September 28th, the rap odyssey contains 21 tracks, moving from expansive pieces to short interludes, beat workouts and more.

“Anything can happen when Muggs, B-Real, and myself get together to record,” says Sen Dog. “We were kids when we first got together. We’ve grown up as men now, but the chemistry is still the same. When we first came out in the nineties, we sounded like nobody else; we sounded like ourselves. This is another continuation”.

B-Real adds: “The album is both a trip back to the roots and an escape into a completely new world”.

Repress ! Somewhere in between the rock-star mischief of the Beastie Boys and the slow-creeping funk of Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill introduced their hazy-eyed sound to the world on their self-titled 1991 debut and things have never quite been the same since. The original Cypress Hill album captures the group at their risk-taking best, mixing gangster posturing, LA street politics, Latin flavor and warped humor together under a thick cloud of weed smoke and innovative beats. Nasal-voiced rapper B-Real and his partner Sen Dog, backed by the adventurous production styles of DJ Muggs, produce classics records like "How I Could Just Kill a Man," "Pigs," "Stoned is the Way of the Walk" and "Hand on the Pump." Since its release, the album has won acclaim as one of Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90s" and "Top 100 Best Rap Albums" by The Source magazine.

Named after a street name in South Gate, California, Cypress Hill was the first Latino American hip-hop group reaching the multi-platinum status in the U.S. On this live album they rewrote some of their older tunes to hard-rock beats, with backup courtesy of SenDog's metal group SX-10, like 'A To The K', 'Lick A Shot', and 'I Ain't Goin' Out Like That'. There is also their stoner songs, like 'I Wanna Get High' and 'Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk'. It also has great versions of their anthem 'Insane In The Brain' as well as some good songs like 'Riot Starter', 'Can't Get The Best Of Me' and '(Rock) Superstar'. Recorded live at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore West with and produced by DJ Muggs.

Hardcore Beats and Marijuana

If there is one rap crew deemed indispensable on the West Coast, it’s Cypress Hill. The Latin American pioneers of gangsta rap have proved themselves an unstoppable force in the world of hip-hop in the 90s, delivering one classic after another with a series of million-selling records. The spectacle began with the Cuban-born brothers Sen Dog and Mellow Man Ace, who, at the age of 21, teamed up with Californian B-Real and New Yorker DJ Muggs to form the crew DVX – short for Devastating Vocal Excellence. The group stood out vocally from the start, thanks in part to B-Real’s unique nasal rap voice that has set milestones in the genre. After Mellow Man Ace’s departure and the renaming inspired by a California street into Cypress Hill, the group quickly found a label home at Ruffhouse Records, who took on their debut album. The self-titled record hit the mark upon its release in August 1991, selling over two million copies and making the trio a rap sensation. The uncompromising hardcore beats and Cypress Hills’ openness to the subject of marijuana were notable, as no one in the States seemed to want the green stuff legalized as much as Sen Dog and B-Real.

Crossover Hits and Street Credibility

In 1993, Black Sunday became an even greater success, securing the crew the number one spot on the Billboard charts. The weed-smoking gangsta rappers expanded the success formula of their debut, with tracks like Insane in the Brain making waves outside of hip-hop and making them equally appealing to alternative rockers. The aesthetic overlap was not coincidental – I Ain’t Goin‘ Out Like That sampled the heavy metal icons Black Sabbath, and even the album cover resembled that of harder rock albums. The intriguing genre mix continued with the Sonic Youth collaboration I Love You Mary Jane, and the group collaborated with Pearl Jam as well. Their crossover successes eventually led them on tour with Rage Against the Machine and Seven Year Bitch – the punk-rap fusion was official. But Cypress Hill didn’t lose their street credibility; Wu-Tang legends U-God and RZA appeared on the album III, and after DJ Muggs lit a joint on Saturday Night Live, the group was forever banned from the show. Despite this, Grammy nominations poured in, and in 1994, percussionist Eric Bobo joined as a new member.

The Zeitgeist Doesn’t Matter

With Skull & Bones, the rock-rappers offered an album that further highlighted their crossover interest by combining electric guitars with DJ Muggs’ beats. The crew also embraced Jamaican influences, inviting Damian Marley on their 2004 album Till Death Do Us Part. As an avid fan of The Clash, DJ Muggs sampled the classic The Guns of Brixton, once again creating hit potential with the track What’s Your Number? However, the beatmaker increasingly distanced himself from the group to focus on other projects, resulting in a sparse output from Cypress Hill in the mid-2000s. With a slew of producers behind them, the album Rise Up was released in 2010 under Priority Records, showing the rappers more aggressive than ever, a formula that proved successful in their live shows. DJ Muggs made a full return to the group with Elephants on Acid in 2018, resulting in new sound ideas, unheard concepts, and a commitment to rap music rarely seen nowadays. The Zeitgeist doesn’t concern these visionaries: “We’re staying 100 per cent true to ourselves, and we’re evolving in our own style, as opposed to evolving to someone else’s style.”
