It's the year 2003. the world is bad and it would only be your fault if it stays that way. but the ärzte are doing what they've never done before: a double album.

Everything has to be included! Punk, jazz, rumba, hard rock ... so many ideas, so many songs ... Even "Als ich den Punk erfand..." (When I invented punk ...) clarifies some aspects of human cultural history that have been clearly neglected up to now. The light-heartedly silly "Jag Älskar Sverige!" is a crowd favorite, "Geisterhaus" plays in the league of the great goth rock anthems, "Deine Schuld" provides the soundtrack to the clenched-fists-in-the-air resistance that is as permanently valid as it is double-edged, while "Die klügsten Männer der Welt" is more of a subtle dialectical critique. "Nothing in the World" is the official heartache cracker. There's also the bundle of pitch-black, cynical "Der Tag" with the blazingly amorous "Die Nacht" and two of the most good-humored zombie homage rock smashers of all time. And the absolutely compelling "Unrockbar" is instantly one of the signature hits of the best band in the world.

die ärzte: Now with Gunter Gabriel, Rod's grandfather, sex with Maya the Bee, penis piercings, 33 times "vorbei" in a single song and some things you don't want to know about. And with three points.

Scrappy and irreverent punkers

Die Ärzte are a German punk rock band formed in Berlin in 1982. Founding members Farin Urlaub and Bela B had previously played in punk bands such as Soilent Grün and S.U.M.P.. They were joined by bassist Hans Runge, who had played in a jazz band, and later by bassist Rodrigo González, a Mexican musician who had moved to Germany. In the early years, Die Ärzte played small venues and festivals and built a fan base in the punk and alternative music scene. Their first album Debil was released in 1984 and featured irreverent and satirical lyrics about topics such as love, sex and politics. Despite their initial success, the band suffered setbacks, including a ban on performing in Bavaria due to controversial lyrics and the departure of Hans Runge in 1986. They continued to release albums and tour, gradually gaining a larger fan base. The Ärzten had their breakthrough in 1993 with the album Die Bestie in Menschengestalt, which included the hit song Schrei nach Liebe. The song, which denounced racism and xenophobia, became a cultural phenomenon in Germany and helped the band achieve mainstream success. Their early years laid the foundation for their later success and solidified their status as one of the most popular and influential German rock bands.

No shortage of inspiration

Active since 1982, the punk rockers released an extensive discography over the course of their career, spanning 35 years and including 13 studio albums, numerous live albums, compilations and singles. Their early albums, such as Debil and Im Schatten der Ärzte, were characterized by fast, energetic punk rock with politically charged lyrics. In the 90s they experimented with different genres, incorporating elements of pop, metal und electronic music into their sound. This period saw the release of groundbreaking vinyls such as Das ist nicht die ganze Wahrheit…. and 13 were released. In the 2000s, Die Ärzte returned to their punk rock roots, releasing hard-hitting albums like Geräusch and Jazz ist anders. They kept pushing the envelope with their lyrics and tackled controversial topics like euthanasia and sexuality. In 2020, Die Ärzte released Vinyl Hell, which featured a mix of classic punk rock tracks and more experimental songs. Their latest disc Dunkel was released in 2021 and contains 19 energetic songs in the Ärzte style.

Social streak

Die Ärzte have become one of the most popular and influential bands in Germany and have had a lasting impact on the German music scene. One of Die Ärzte’s most important contributions to the music world was their influence on the punk rock genre in Germany. They were among the pioneers of the German punk scene in the 1980s and shaped the genre with their unique sound and style. Their music has also had a lasting impact on the German language and culture. They have written songs on a variety of topics, from politics and society to love and relationships. Their clever lyrics and catchy melodies have helped make the German language more accessible and attractive to young people. They are also involved in social and political causes, using their platform to raise awareness and promote positive change. For example, they have spoken out against racism, sexism and homophobia and supported environmental and animal welfare campaigns. Their unique sound and style, socially relevant lyrics, and active involvement in social and political causes have made them one of the most influential bands in Germany and beyond.
