On the West Coast, gangsta rap held sway in hip-hop as the 21st century began. The alternative and conscious rap music of the early-to-mid-90s had all but faded into the underground. The scene was set for a comeback, perhaps as a backlash to the perceived violence and misogyny of
gangsta rap's content. Leading the resurgence of alternative hip-hop were groups like Jurassic 5, and recent
signees to Capitol Records; a West coast trio that had been building steam underground since the early 90s called Dilated Peoples.

Anticipation was high for the release of the debut album from Evidence, Rakaa, and DJ Babu. (Of the influential turntablist collective Beat Junkies.) When The Platform arrived in May of 2000 it was met with critical and underground acclaim, as well as affording Dilated Peoples their first Billboard chartings. It featured a back-to-basics sound with a heavy debt to the old-school hip-hop ethos, the kind of sound that harkened back to the early days of legends like De La Soul & A Tribe Called Quest. Hits like
""No Retreat"" and ""The Platform"" were bolstered by Evidence & Rakaa's subtle, abstract wit, and swift, adroit wordplay, while DJ Babu provided production chops and dextrous scratches. On The Platform the trio were joined by the likes of B-Real, Tha Alkoholiks, Everlast, Planet
Asia, and many more providing guest vocals, while boasting guest production from The Alchemist & Kut Masta Kurt, among others.

Since its 2000 release this influential record, which heralded the return of alternative hip-hop, has never seen
a vinyl reissue. With that, Get On Down-always on top of giving the greatest hip-hop albums their due-is proud to present this re-release of The Platform. The rhymes are still fresh, the production is still pristine, and the album is now back on vinyl for the first time in 17 years.

Dilated Peoples is the Los Angeles hip hop trio that achieved great success in the underground hip hop community during the Nineties and Zeroes. The trio consisted of Evidence, Rakaa Iriscience and DJ Babu. Their fourth studio album 20/20 was originally release in 2006. The album's second single, an anti-racism cultural awareness politico called "Wussup Wit the Luv," features a solo from the Funkadelic guitarist Michael Hampton, as well as a verse and video appearance by Tupac Shakur. This was the last time Shakur appeared on any Digital Underground release. The album also contains "The Humpty Dance Awards," the group's humorous shout-out to the many artists who sampled "The Humpty Dance" before 1993 (since then the list has grown to more than 50 artists). The Body-Hat Syndrome, originally released on October 5, 1993, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. We are finally set to reissue Blowout Comb, the 1994 second album by cult, Brooklyn-based hip hop trio Digable Planets.

The album is named for the combs used to maintain an Afro hairstyle, and that’s significant. The group’s Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler said it summed up what they wanted to do with it: "It means the utilization of the natural, a natural style,” he has said.

Like with 1993’s debut Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), ‘utilizing the natural’ meant creating hip hop that blended jazz with the formidable rap skills of the aforementioned Butterfly, Craig ‘Doodlebug’ Irving and Mary Ann ‘Ladybug Mecca’ Vieira. Unlike that debut, it meant broadening to include guests such as Gang Starr’s Guru, Jeru the Damaja, and Jazzy Joyce.

Following the gold-selling commercial success of their debut, they here set out to prove their artistic prowess. This is intelligent, alternative hip hop that sounded like party music. Its lyrics are dense with wit, social commentary and politics – and its original inner sleeve was modeled on the newspaper of the Black Panther movement.

Its instrumentation includes sax, vibraphone and flute. Its samples – gathered from global cratedigging trips while touring the first album around the world – included Grant Green, Eddie Harris, Shuggie Otis and jazz-funk pioneer Roy Ayers (whose “We Live in Brooklyn, Baby” became “Borough Check” here). And yet at the same time its beats are infectious and its spirit undeniable.

This is an album firmly rooted in Brooklyn. “Growing up hearing and cherishing this album, it created a textured soundscape of a mythical world of rhymes, jazz, breakbeats, culture, art and urban ambiance,” says DJ and fan Mick Boogie in the liner notes. “When I moved to Brooklyn years later, I found that the world I imagined while listening to this classic LP actually really existed…”

On his second full-length release with Illect Recordings, The Canadian born rhyme writer lifts up his head, drops his guard and pours out his heart across ten self-produced tracks. Eyes Across The Room is an earnest celebration of love and longevity as Die-rek salutes his significant other for her ride or die brand of loyalty. He speaks his love language fluently over tinkling piano keys that sound like they were rescued from RZA's flooded basement. Ditty Dum Ditty Doo is a bespoke bop where Die-rek speaks life atop a stuttering bass line with a stop and go flow. He encourages the listener to embrace their one of one identity and live life with authenticity. The spaced-out melody is deceptively addictive, but the empowering message reaches home. In the spirit of community, He Paid It All finds Die-rek clicking up with his friends Rel McCoy and Griffin. Neither one of them mince words about how their faith had been funded, and all three verses are declarations of humble gratitude. Die-rek saves the best for last with the final song. Runnin', which is the album's true man in the mirror moment. Die-rek pledges allegiance to God and the grind, promising to make use of grace and not waste his days on Earth. This particular slice of sound thrusts consciousness above the clouds with a dream-like sensation that shifts seamlessly between realms and reality. "Wir lassen´s langsam gehen, es gibt ja wohl im Leben nichts das eilt!". Die Hänger ließen auf ihrer 2013 erschienenen Debut-EP schon unschwer erkennen, dass sie ihrerseits Connaiseure der Zwanglosigkeit und Verfechter des Untüchtigen sind. "Lieber garnix, statt Palaver machen!" lautet bis heute die Devise. Zehn Jahre sind bis zur Fertigstellung ihres Langspielers ins Land gezogen. Für ein Duo, das sich Die Hänger nennt, wohl der ultimative Beweis für die im „Rap Game“ so geschätzte Authentizität. Mit den Jahren wurden die Haare der Protagonisten vielleicht etwas grauer und so oft zeichnet sich das Zeitgeschehen auf diesem Planeten in fader Eintönigkeit ab, ein Grund dafür mit "Bunt" musikalisch eine üppige Farbpalette anzubieten. Ihren Wurzeln sind sich die Beiden stilistisch sicherlich treu geblieben, aber der boombap-lastige Trademark Sound hat sich mit den Jahren dennoch auf seine eigene Art und Weise weiterentwickelt. So gibt es in mehreren Songs durch eigens von Headtrick eingespielte Trompeten und Flügelhörner sogar Chorgesang zu hören. Inhaltlich kreist der Pinsel um das Alltagsgeschehen, persönliche Anekdoten, die Vergänglichkeit des Daseins und was die Beiden sonst noch so beschäftigt. In diesem Sinne: "Der Scheiss kommt bunter als ne Hippietapete!".

With the release of Collusion, that time is now, and it couldn’t have arrived at a more perfect moment. The project eschews every trend and flash-in-the-pan style to create a record that’s a must-listen for anyone who truly appreciates sharp lyricism and neck snapping production.

“We’re two artists with 18 years of friendship, colluding to form a cohesive monster,” Diabolic says of working with Vanderslice. “The chemistry is automatic,“ he adds. “At first, we tested the waters to see if the chemistry was there, and if we could actually make a cohesive record, that we were both passionate about, and we did,” echoes Slice.

It’s apparent that Collusion is an absolute force when you hear opening track “Think of That,” a blistering banger featuring shots at his rivals, over Slice’s hypnotic production. And the remainder of the album hits just as hard, with tracks like the chest-thumping “Normalize,” the Nems featured heater, “See the Light,” the DJ Revolution-assisted “Simon Phoenix,” and the B-Side opener, “The Other Side,” which Vanderslice claims to be one of his toughest beats in years.

In addition to battle-ready bars and neck-breaking production, the lyrics and album title of course reference the nation’s current political climate. But the thing is, that wasn’t intentional for either collaborator. “The ‘political’ topics I touch on are just hints of what’s on my mind at the time” Diabolic explains. Adding to that, Vanderslice states: “You let the artist write and record whatever they want. It's my job to trim the fat and present it in it's absolute best light.” With the fat trimmed and everything in place, we're left with one of the most noteworthy rapper-producer collaborations of the year.
