Kevin Over, Rindeau, Cuartero, Frazer Campbell. The collective Beste Modus Cinthie, Diego Krause, stevn.aint.leavn, Ed Herbst and Albert Vogt launched the label in 2012 as a platform for their own material, not long after came the realisation that many other artists around them were keen to be involved with the imprints burgeoning success and this led to the birth of Beste Fruende, a home for music from friends and affiliates of the label. Kevin Over’s ‘Butchers’ leads on the package with a swinging drum groove, emotive piano chords and a garage sub-tinged sub bass line alongside resonant synth licks and infectious vocals. Rindeau follows with ‘Wax On The Moon’, taking things deeper via twinkling Rhodes lines, dusty robust drums and modulating percussion. Cuartero’s ‘Floor Paca’ opens the flip side with choppy bass stabs, soft chord hits and a subtly nuanced rhythmic drive before ‘Slow Motion’ rounds out the package, employing classic deep house tropes with airy ethereal pads, vocal chops and shuffled, strippedback drums at its core.

The story of Bella Boo is not one of overnight success, though of course it might appear as such, if you haven’t been somewhat embedded in the wonderful and weird world of Swedish club culture over the last 12 years or so, in which case you will know her as one of the most eclectic, informed and hardworking DJs on the scene. It wasn’t until last year’s Studio Barnhus debut, the Fire EP, that the world finally started talking about Bella’s extraordinary production skills – the record’s fuzzy r&b harmonics and snappy analog drums prompted Pitchfork to declare it “the flat-out dreamiest thing to come from the label yet”. This was followed quickly by boyboy, a universally beloved track on last year’s Studio Barnhus Volym 1 compilation, in which she “[drizzled] bluesy sweet nothings over elliptical scrapes and squelches, suggesting Matthew Herbert remixing St Germain” (Pitchfork again). Supervillain is Bella’s first solo release of 2019, a perfect three-track thing that sees the currently London-based artist continue to expertly straddle the fence between enigmatic dreamlands and groove-locked dance floors. 2019 see's the pair land on STRCTR, a label with a reputation for delivering that sweet House music and Das Carma are in good company here with previous artists such as Manooz, Harrison BDP & Liam Geddes on the label. Even the title of the EP shows the fondness between label & producers : STR -> MRS (Airport codes stands for Stuttgart, Germany from where the producers come from and Marseille, France where the label is based). Delivering a 4 track EP of original productions Das Carma show that sometimes a ﬂashy remixer is simply not needed. LIFTOFF CLOUD 9 opens the EP with a warm ﬂoating dreamlike track, ebbing and weaving beautifully throughout the course of the track. LARRY & FRANKIE and SUBNAUTICA keep the subtle refrains of the opener but bring the funk slightly more with bump-in garage drums turning these tracks into feel good lo-ﬁ burners. Closing out the EP is DUB101, here the guys waste no time in making the tracks intentions felt, skippy House drums and a big old slice of call & response from some heavy hitting Dub chords - Peak time tackle.

There’s no better man to mark the fiftieth release on WOLF Music than South London stalwart and OG WOLF family, Medlar. Marrying techy touches and UKG stylings, with sonar bumps and Medlar's signature, sample-heavy groove, it’s a fitting way to bring in the half century.
The Peckham powerhouse throws down from the off with the rubbery, wiggling, ‘Novanta’. A garage infused lo-fi shuffle, springing samples and saturated stabs mingle with a choice vocal snippet. Looping up a Rhodes top line Medlar adds a certain swagger to this South of the river saunter.
'Pampas Drums' gets the room spinning with metallic percussive hits, twisting samples and wiggy zaps that form a cosmic swirl of echoes. Like a perpetually charging ray gun that's about to blow, the rising swells add layers of suspense to this hardy drum workout. Perfect laid over tracks or to shock dancers in it's own right.
Take to the flip for ‘Paloma’ showcasing Medlar’s fondness for a dose of UKG. Swinging hats and skipping claps blend with offbeat vocal cut-ups that give a classic underground '90s spark. Rolling subs add a weight whilst a crunched-up soulful synth offers a fresh flavoured touch to this tough jam.
Medlar rounds off the E.P in the Rye Wax basement with late night slammer, ‘Monday Boy’. Straight up, synth heavy club business, rich in analogue power and perfectly interlaced melodies, that has peak time written all over it.
Ten years in the game for WOLF Music and a landmark 50th release produced by a man who's been part of the brotherhood since the beginning.

It’s been ten years since Kenton Slash Demon landed on Tartelet with their debut EP Khattabi followed by the much-celebrated The Schwarzschild Trilogy singles - Sun, Matter and Daemon all released 2009–2011.Ten years have passed since our first release on Tartelet and with this record it feels like we’ve gone full circle. It’s a beautiful thing.”
Zstring marks their return to Tartelet – but it’s also a precursor for things to come within the next year. With talks of a full-length album, the KSD project is now being given the attention it deserves.
Kenton Slash Demon have always had an affinity for uplifting melancholic tunes – and Zstring cements their ability to create just that. The track oozes with dance-floor euphoria, offering up a distorted arpeggio bassline, lush pads and layered melodies, all built around a tight and ever- changing groove. There are clear references to Italo disco, early techno and trance, but it’s hard to pin down the exact style – if that even matters.
On remix duties, man of the moment and label collaborator, Urulu, delivers a fresh take in his signature early 90s style, while local hero and close friend Kasper Marott of Monkeytown fame comes through with an obscure melodic techno workout of the finest sorts.
To further advance the concept of “full circle,” the 12’ comes in vintage Tartelet sleeves circa 2009-2010, salvaged from three different releases – which have been in storage since being produced.
Zstring will be available April 12 th 2019 on vinyl and April 26th on all digital platforms.

Is another EP from D.K. about to land on Antinote while the first one has been announced only a month ago? Well, this looks very much like a series and – spoiler alert – Riding For A Fall EP is the second installment in a trilogy.
With a BPM crossing the 120 line on 2 out of 3 tracks, there’s little doubt that this second 12” is also meant to be played in a club environment. The 9:37 min long Voices sprawls over the whole A-side. Like many productions stamped “D.K.”, the structure is linear only in appearance: it winds up and down between fantasized exotic landscapes, digital plug-ins mimicking “far east” instruments that are barely recognizable. It gets even snakier with the Samurai Showdown-inspired Shoubuari (Battle): pixel swords brushing past our ears, martial drumming and menacing synths (D.K., were you the kind of kid who owned a Neo Geo?) - it’s pretty obvious that we’re in the world of SNK’s legendary fighting game.
Things calm down with Riding For A Fall: less button-mashing, more concentration as we’re witnessing the sacred martial art known as Street Fighter’s quarter circles… But enough with these video game metaphors! No need to be a pro-gamer to enjoy this piece of music. It’s sad & slow house music with a cinematographic quality – and, perhaps, the most moving moment in this series of 12”. To be continued…
