Like a twisted tree trunk seen from a distance, Tyvek’s new LP Blunt Instrumentals' form only reveals itself upon closer inspection. The title’s misnomer seems designed to trip up the casual observer as the tracks are neither instrumentals nor are the edges of these punks blunted by undue preparation and polish. These collected recordings were committed to cassette in January 2009 while the band regrouped as a three piece with Kevin Boyer on guitar and vocals, Shelley Salant on bass and Matt Ziolkowski on drums. The songs on the LP were originally released on two extremely limited cassette runs shortly after recording, with 5 tracks also included on the 12” Blunt Instrumental EP released on Night People records. This new LP, released on Ginkgo Records and Doubles Tapes, includes all tracks from the prior cassettes with two additional songs. During a long weekend holed up in Matt Z’s Aunt’s home on Clark Lake they worked on songs and jammed out into fresh territory. Fitting in well with the Tyvek ethos, the 12 tracks range from short and blistered punk blasts to the fully blasted 10-minute space rock of Cold Sun Blind My Eye. Spun together, the album is a great reminder of Tyvek’s stream-of-consciousness style and passion. Lyrically looser and occasionally off-the-cuff, it also hits with some great tunes. Somewhere in the freezing Michigan winter we find a window opened onto a view of Tyvek creating something memorable beneath the clouds.

Dark Entries and Papi Juice Records team up for No Jack Swing, the solo electronic debut of multi-hype man Brontez Purnell. The Southern-raised, Oakland-based musician and writer has centered his queerness and Blackness in projects Gravy Train and Younger Lovers as well as in his award-winning books 100 Boyfriends and Since I Laid My Burden Down. On No Jack Swing, Purnell gives us a love letter to the most beloved (and secularized) of drum patterns - that is, the electronic 808 “Amen Break”. Beginning recording in 2020, Purnell conceived of No Jack Swing as an audio zine of found sound materials: chain letters of instrumentals recorded in bedrooms, poems from boys in France, found gospel tapes from his childhood family Baptist Choir, and the sound of records skipping on his bedroom turntable. No Jack Swing is as much a homage to No Wave and New Jack Swing as it is an answering to the gods of Indie, Electroclash, Disco, and Gospel. Amidst all this background noise, the unexpected occurs: all the niche pretensions collapse to a singularity - the sound of High Pop! No Jack Swing was produced by Nightfeelings. Haunted Painting is the return to Sadie Dupuis' pop-oriented solo project Sad13. Previous releases include 2016's Slugger and a handful of tracks across compilations such as Adult Swim's Singles series. Since Slugger, Dupuis' other project Speedy Ortiz has released a new record and toured heavily and Dupuis has also published a poetry manuscript titled Mouthguard. It all finds Dupuis, already one of the sharpest lyricists of her generation, leveling up as an arranger and producer. Drawing inspiration from 1980s British pop-rock à la Tracy Ullman and Joan Armatrading, as well as the contemporary digital gloss of post-PC Music electronica, she calls Haunted Painting 'decidedly non-minimal,' mixing technicolor synth-pop and math-rock dynamism. The first track from Haunted Painting, 'WTD?', was also featured as part of the Adult Swim Singles series.

Like the many Banded Stilts that spread across the cover of her newest album Flood, Stella Donnelly is wading into uncharted territory. Here, she finds herself discovering who she is as an artist among the flock, and how abundant one individual can be. Flood is Donnelly's record of this rediscovery: the product of months of risky experimentation, hard moments of introspection, and a lot of moving around. Donnelly's early reflections on the relationship between the individual and the many can be traced back to her time in the rainforests of Bellingen, where she took to birdwatching as both a hobby and an escape in a borderrestricted world. By paying closer attention to the natural world around her, Donnelly recalls "I was able to lose that feeling of anyone's reaction to me. I forgot who I was as a musician, which was a humbling experience of just being; being my small self." Reconnecting with this `small self' allowed Donnelly to tap into creative wells she didn't know existed. Soon songs were coming to her in a way she could not control and over the coming months, Donnelly accumulated 43 tracks as she moved out of Bellingen and around the country, often finding herself displaced due to border restrictions and a tough rental market. Though the writing of Flood was an intensely personal undertaking, Donnelly still saw the recording process as one of her most collaborative projects yet. Along with her band members, co-producing the record beside Anna Laverty and Methyl Ethyl's Jake Webb helped to foster an important spontaneity in the studio. With Webb, Donnelly could "dig in" and discover a "forward-leaning sound" she'd been searching for, while Laverty's ability to "capture the piano" and discern the "perfect take" allowed the songwriter to take risks, many of which have clearly paid off. Looking back at the Banded Stilt, Donnelly ultimately appreciates how when "seen in a crowd they create an optical illusion, but on its own it's this singular piece of art." While each song in Flood is a singular artwork unto itself, the collective shares all of Stella Donnelly in abundance: her inner child, her nurturing self, her nightmare self; all of herself has gone into the making of this record, and although it would take an ocean to fathom everything she feels, it's well worth diving in.

UFO Over Lappland from Umea in the northern part of Sweden (also home to Refused) are an instrumental kraut-rock band in the vein of Neu!, Amon Duul II, or early Kraftwerk, but with some post-rock sensibilities. Burnt Toast Vinyl is proud to re-release UFO Over Lappland's self-titled debut album on cd/LP. Their original cassette release sold out very quickly in Sweden and was then picked up for cd/LP release by Germany's Sulatron Records. That original vinyl pressing of the album has sold out. For this Burnt Toast Vinyl re-issue, the audio was remastered by Grammy winning engineer Stephen Roessner (Calibrated Sound, Saxon Shore) and was cut to lacquers by Bob Weston at his Chicago Mastering Service. The LPs are pressed on high quality space purple/pink swirled vinyl from Gotta Groove in Cleveland. "We are presented with four fairly lengthy instrumental tracks, fashioned from long jams and distilled down to these awesome songs presented here, on this their first record. The album starts with the twelve plus minute epic that is 'Keep On Keepin' On Space Truckin', a mission statement if ever there was one, with Hawkwind immediately springing to mind, combined with the motorik, pulsating rhythms of say Neu. The grinding, gnarled bass often doing the job of the lead guitar during some of the passages; it's heavy but not loose, propelling itself ever spaceward in a questing fashion, plenty of bubbling synth'unlike a lot of space rock, they achieve a very focused sound, oh and it rocks like a bastard! ..As debut albums go, it's one of the finest in the genre that I've heard, highly recommended." There’s a big clue to the pacific wisdom of The Orchestra in the Sky in the artist name – Hochzeitskapelle + Japanese Friends. For this is, indeed, music based in, and resonating with, friendship, camaraderie, collaboration, and creative exchange. Across two albums – one documenting recordings from Tokyo, the other an expansive double album of sessions from Kobe – Hochzeitskapelle gather around them some of the finest voices in Japanese independent and underground pop music, like Tenniscoats, Eddie Marcon, Yuko Ikema, and Kama Aina, and explore an open field of music, full of creative encounters. You may already know Hochzeitskapelle as the German instrumental quintet formed by members of The Notwist, Alien Ensemble, and friends from the jazz scene. Across three albums, one a collaboration with Kama Aina (2018’s Wayfaring Suite), they’ve developed a way of playing together that’s intimate and playful, rich and human; it’s a music that’s deliberately rough around the edges, and that nestles cosily into the everyday. Their relationship with Japanese indie has developed over the years, doubtless encouraged by Saya´s „Minna Miteru“, compilations series of Japanese indie pop for Morr Music. A peripatetic gang, Hochzeitskapelle also recently backed Japanese singer-songwriter Makoto Kawamoto on her new album, Hikari. In many ways, The Orchestra in the Sky feels like the culmination of a set of ongoing cross-cultural exchanges: the Minna Miteru compilations; tours of Japan by Hochzeitskapelle and The Notwist; and indeed, Markus Acher’s Spirit Fest group with Saya and Ueno of Tenniscoats. The latter are present throughout much of The Orchestra in the Sky, and Saya’s voice is particularly winning on songs like “Tsuki no oto”, where the two outfits are joined by brass ensemble Zayaendo. There are several lovely turns from singer-songwriter Yuko Ikema, and Eddie Marcon appear twice; their songs are still beautiful, spectral acid folk, but with Hochzeitskapelle filling the details with lush, sad brass and strings. But it’s also the potentially lesser-known names that shine through The Orchestra in the Sky, like the frail folk of Gratin Carnival; the delightful, gentle pop songs by sekifu and Zayaendo member, Kanako Numata; a trio of beautiful, stumble-drunk melodies played in swaying consort with popo. That group, along with the presence of Zayaendo, Fuigo, and Mitamurakandadan?, make strong connections with the Japanese underground’s love of brass bands, partly informed by the tradition of chindon’ya, marching bands that walk the streets of Japanese cities. They also all appeared on the recent Alien Parade Japan compilation of such groups, assembled by Acher and Saya. All things converge, then, on The Orchestra in the Sky, a smart, spirited collection of heavenly pop songs, intimate folk melodies, lungfuls of joyous brass, deep weeping strings, and swooning sighs. The last words go to Acher himself: “Many things we did in the last years come together here and it feels like something special was captured.” We hope you like what you hear.

Exploring the cosmic countryside between american-primitive and impressionism, Reverse Death slows down time on their moss laden debut, Stretching to Infinity. The group brings together garden hymnal oddments, and nocturnal lofi textures, to create a moonlit world of echoes bubbling up through a mineral rich past. Reverse Death was birthed in Seattle, WA by the songwriters of Swamp Meat, Baywitch, & Killer Ghost. Utilizing cello tonics, gentle feedback, crawling piano ascents, and orbiting melodies, this amalgam of earthy ingredients plucked for the infinite night.

Stretching to Infinity’s dulcet palette was developed during a tour in Guadalajara while discovering new improvisational techniques and diving deep into the music of Tengger, Jessica Pratt, Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou and John Fahey. Channeling the afterglow of these explorations, the album was recorded after sundown, with closed eyes, and aims set on stretching the body and mind through all the spiritual hangups of life. Days were spent pouring over the collection of raw recordings during an extended stay in the Snoqualmie woods. A field tested cycle of songs was selected and sequenced for the album. With the help of mix master Dylan White, and mastering wizard Mikey Young, the music was fully actualized into its widest and most shimmering potential self.

Das neue Album von Car Seat Headrest, „Making A Door Less Open“, liefert die ersten neuen Songs seit dem 2016er Album "Teens Of Denial". Die Tracks entstanden in den letzten vier Jahren als fruchtbare Kollaboration zwischen Car Seat Headrest und 1 Trait Danger, einem elektronischen CSH-Nebenprojekt, bestehend aus dem CSH-Drummer Andrew Katz und Toledos Alter Ego Trait. So wurde das Album letztlich doppelt aufgenommen: Einmal live in voller Bandbesetzung mit Gitarren, Drums und Bass und einmal in einer MIDI-Version, nur mit synthetisch erzeugten Sounds. Durch den Mix wurden die beiden Ansätze dann miteinander verflochten und um zusätzliche Aufnahmen ergänzt.

Nachdem Will Toledo zu Beginn seines Schaffens als Car Seat Headrest bis zum Signing bei Matador Records in 2015 je nach Zählweise (hier streiten sich die Geister) zwischen acht und 12 Alben veröffentlichte, fühlen sich nun die vier Jahre Pause seit „Teens of Denial“ wie ein ganzes Leben für den in Seattle lebenden Musikaholic. Doch das zur Band angewachsene Projekt um Mastermind Toledo war keinesfalls untätig, sondern erfand sich und ihre Weise Musik zu machen kurzerhand neu. „I wanted to make something that was different from my previous records, and I struggled to figure out how to do that. I realized that because the way I listened to music had changed, I had to change the way I wrote music, as well. I was listening less and less to albums and more and more to individual songs, songs from all over the place, every few days finding a new one that seemed to have a special energy. Oakland band Blues Lawyer joins Dark Entries for their third full-length, All in Good Time, a record of pop-rock songs about living in a world that wants to put your existence on the clock. Blues Lawyer was formed in 2017 as an outlet for guitarist/vocalist Rob I. Miller and drummer Elyse Schrock to write pop songs outside of the strictures of their other groups. Following 2018’s Guess Work and 2019’s Something Different, Blues Lawyer had “graduated from being a side project band, a sort of throwaway project, to actually being a legitimate band,” according to Miller. Under the backdrop of global pandemic and existential crisis, they set about recording their new record. Says Miller, “I have always been really attracted to the way we measure time, especially in relationship to our concepts of what we are supposed to have achieved. There’s a lot of different moments on the record where we’re interrogating this whole value system that comes along with it—determining my worth because of where I’m at in my life in relation to my age, in my love life, in my career.” All in Good Time finds Blues Lawyer moving away from the Flying Nun-influenced jangle pop of their earlier work towards a 90’s alternative rock sound imbued with melancholy of the Lemonheads and Teenage Fanclub. Miller and Schrock agree that this is their first record approached with intentionality, each member having spent their time in pandemic-enforced isolation, honing their songcraft and penning sharp hooks. With the addition of bassist Alejandra Alcala and guitarist Ellen Matthews, Blues Lawyer has become more unabashedly riff-centric, bringing a controlled wildness to the new songs, as evidenced by Matthews’ single-take guitar solo on album closer “Tangled Mess”. This is also the first record on which Schrock and Miller share songwriting duties, with Schrock’s earnest contributions balancing out Miller’s more sardonic approach. Schrock’s optimism particularly shines on the Heavenly-esque “Late Bloomer” as she sings “A late bloom is worth the wait.”. Cool Rock&roll, Surf, Beat AND Garage-rock From Philippines IN THE 60s!! Led by teen guitar wizard Ramon “rj” Jacinto, RJ & THE Riots was one of the first rock&roll /beat bands from the Philippines and certainly the first to release original rock n’ roll songs with lyrics in their own country. This is the first ever reissue of their second album, originally released in 1964 and now impossible to find (four stars rating in Hans Pokora’s 1001 Record Collector Dreams book). Including original songs like the monster instrumental “Fuzzed”, the garage sounding “Advertising Man”, “Girl Nice”, the surf rock of “Trip To Manila” and more plus a few rad covers (Beach Boys, Buddy Holly…). The album was recorded at the home studio built by whizz kid Ramón Jacinto, who also operated his own record label (RJ Productions), magazine (Teenstone) and radio station (from his parent’s backyard!) RJ and the Riots started as a high school band of classmates composed of Ramon “rj” Jacinto (lead guitar), Alan Austria (bass guitar), Jimmy Colayco (rhythm guitar) and Bernie Evangelista (drums) with ages ranging from 15-17 years old. They were one of the first bands with electric instruments in the Philippines and this album marked the transition from instrumental rock to vocals.
