On The Sport of Love, seasoned collaborators Asma Maroof, Patrick Belaga and Tapiwa Svosve consider the language, competition and contradiction of modern romance: its yearning, incomprehensible vastness and the inevitable darkness and fleeting fragility. For the trio, love is the emotion that propels all of us whether we acknowledge it or not, and its expression can be realized in many forms.

Eight years after the critically acclaimed Alien Cartoon, Senegalese producer Ibaaku returns with Joola Jazz LP! An alchemy of jazz, electronic sounds and Casamance music in the tradition of Touré Kunda and Xalam in their day. The album is also accompanied by a short film: a manifesto of resilience in the face of the sound poet's personal history but also a questioning of the way in which technologies technologies and cultures come together to reinitialize our imaginary. Identity: The meeting point of electronics, jazz and the musical tradition of Casamance. The realization of this new project is associated with a research approach to traditional Casamance rhythms, vocals and instruments. A reference to Spiritual Jazz is also present, through stories and approaches ; while the skeleton of Ibaaku's tracks remains experimental, with strong influences from the emerging African club scene.

Aldebaran is award-winning pianist/composer Kathrine Windfeld's fifth release as a leader but her debut recording with her sextet, with the title track doubling as a focus track. Also known as the Red Eye of the Bull, it refers to a star located in the zodiac constellation of Taurus. The song haunts with a lurking latent desperation that makes it feel like it could explode. It's a restless piece and is a relevant representation of the music on the new album, with the sextet Windfeld has focused on over the past three years taking centre stage, after rising to stardom with her big band.Polish trumpeter Tomasz Dabrowski (b.1984) has been a valued asset on the Danish jazz scene for several years. His compatriot, saxophonist Marek Konarski (b.1992), studied at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Odense and performed with several prominent Danish musicians before relocating to his home country. Saxophonist Hannes Bennich (b.1994) is one of Sweden's bright new talents. His compatriot, bassist Johannes Vaht (b.1988) and Danish drummer Henrik Holst Hansen (b. 1989), have played extensively with each other and developed an intense collaboration over a decade in the Kathrine Windfeld Big Band. On his debut album kotokid walks you through meandering scenes of jazz fusion and hip-hop infused sonic cinema. While bass guitar is his bread and butter, the Amsterdam-based musician is a multi-instrumentalist in the truest sense of the word. Throughout this album he effortlessly blends together enchanting harmonies, expansive synth-scapes, intimate piano melodies, stanky bass grooves. With ‘ignite’ and ‘early spring’ he captures the emotions of rebirth, renewal, and hope. Energizing the spirit with ‘Fl00t’, ‘floating’ and ‘Titan’ he invites a sense of action, urgency and eventual triumph. Victory’s abound. Sonic meditations in their own right, ‘soil’ and ‘kotokin’ blend cinematic stylized melodies together eliciting introspection and clarity. And whether it's joy, nostalgia, discomfort, pain, grief, longing or happy remembrance - ‘family & death’ - conjures the plethora of these experiences in a life giving dance between piano and cello.

The next release in the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics series, is one of Juan Pablo Torres' most-known and loved albums, the iconic Super Son from 1977. A wonderful record of tripped-out rumbas, psych-Afro-Latin funk and quirky orchestrated tracks with a big band horn section courtesy of Torres’ band, Algo Nuevo.

As well as being the director of Algo Nuevo and Cuban all-star ensemble Estrellas De Areito, the trombonist, bandleader, arranger and producer also released a wealth of albums under his own name predominately on the state-owned imprint Areito/EGREM.

Post-revolution, there was a contrast in Cuba’s musical world. State censorship was at play, but professional musicians were on the government payroll which gave them an artistic freedom. Experimentation emanated in the ‘70s and ‘80s and Super Son is a prime example of that. ‘Y Que Bien' kicks off the album taking you down a tripped-out, cosmic rabbithole, psych guitars and skat vocals opening up into a joyful funk groove laced with jazzy Afro-Cuban horns stabs. Tracks such as 'Pastel En Descarga' seem to come out of nowhere and are completely unique. Fuzzed-up guitar lines and percussion lay the groundwork, with those jubilant horns adding to the energy of this forever building track.

Elsewhere, there’s the ‘70s TV theme-tune feeling of 'Con Aji Guaguao', a playful funk number that boils and bubbles with blistering trombone playing by Torres. Or ‘Son A Propulsión' and ‘Son Riendo’, two more brilliant examples of psychedelic funk, wrapped up in a blanket of Afro-Cuban rhythms. The former sweeping you up in rushes of wind as trumpets, trombones and distorted guitars trade off, the latter, an intergalactic fiesta of tradition and exploration.

Super Son is up there as one of the funkiest Cuban records around, a playful fusion of ideas from a producer, player and group on fine form and, for us, one of our favourite gems to come out of Cuba in this period. A sheer masterpiece.
