During the late 1950s, the iconic tenor saxophonist John Coltrane was exploring different milieus with various associates, most notably reconnecting with Miles Davis during a time when the latter was working with pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummers Jimmy Cobb and Art Taylor. These players are featured on the 1958 session that would yield Stardust, released by Prestige four years later, and although comprised of four standard cover tunes, Trane’s playing is so supremely emotive and the hard-bop arrangements so subtle and engaging that the LP becomes another deep audio dive that sounds better with every listen.

John Coltrane Quartet — A Love Supreme Analogue Productions' Uhqr, the pinnacle of high-quality vinyl! 45 RPM Ultra High Quality Record release. Limited to 10,000 copies. Mastered from the original tape by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound Pressed at Quality Record Pressings using Clarity Vinyl® Includes a 12" x 12" 12-page booklet featuring liner notes by Ashley Kahn and images from the Coltrane home

Audiophile reviews rave about saxophone master John Coltrane's immortal Impulse! records, A Love Supreme (1964) and Ballads (1963). In fact, jazz critics have lauded A Love Supreme as Coltrane's most important recording. The rave reviews which appeared in the magazines Downbeat, Jazz Hot, Jazz Podium and Swing-journal reflected this: critics all over the world, in America, Europe and Japan recognized that Coltrane's deep religious belief had influenced both his approach to life and his music-making.

You're about to experience A Love Supreme at its peak of vinyl perfection — in Uhqr format on Clarity Vinyl, with the added bonus of a double 45 RPM cut by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. Ryan's cut has his characteristic clarity and transparency all set against Quality Record Pressing's usual noiseless backgrounds on 200-gram flawless records. Each Uhqr will be packaged in a deluxe box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a Uhqr along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product.

For this 45 RPM 2LP edition you'll also receive a 12" x 12" 12-page booklet featuring liner notes by Ashley Kahn and images from the Coltrane home.

The original master tape is available but it's not in the best shape. This LP was cut from a flat tape copy made by Rudy Van Gelder and used for cutting in the UK in April of 1965. Of course, the original recording was in December '64, so only a handful of months later. This tape was discovered at Abbey Road and had been untouched between 1965 and 2002. So while the original tape is available and while we would always opt for the original whenever we can, in this case this copy was the better choice as the tape has incurred less overall wear and sounds much better than the original.

A Love Supreme was Coltrane's pinnacle studio outing that at once compiled all of his innovations from his past, spoke of his current deep spirituality, and also gave a glimpse into the next two and a half years (sadly, those would be his last). Recorded at the end of 1964, Trane's classic quartet of Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison stepped in and created one of the most thought-provoking albums of their relationship.

The album not only enabled Coltrane to express himself with great intensity but also lent him the necessary inner peace to conceive a work of almost 40 minutes in length and to lead his quartet along the same path as himself.

Navy Musician

John Coltrane, a luminary in the world of jazz, has created a legacy that transcends his mortal existence. Born on 23 September 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, Coltrane’s early life was marked by hardship and the struggles of growing up in the racially charged environment of the segregated South. Coltrane’s musical journey began at the tender age of 13 when he picked up the alto saxophone. His dedication and talent landed him in the Navy Band, where he honed his skills during World War II. After his military service, Coltrane immersed himself in the thriving Philadelphia jazz scene, playing with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Johnny Hodges. In the early 1950s, Coltrane joined Johnny Hodges’ band, a major breakthrough that allowed him to showcase his evolving style. But it was only with the Miles Davis Quintet that Coltrane really began to make a name for himself. During his time with Davis, from 1955 to 1960, he developed his characteristic “sheets of sound” technique, which is characterised by fast and dense note patterns. It was during this time that the foundations were laid for his later innovations.

Transformative works

Coltrane’s solo career took off in the early 1960s with groundbreaking albums such as Giant Steps (1960) and My Favourite Things (1961). Giant Steps_ showcased his skills as a composer and improviser, exploring the boundaries of harmonic complexity in jazz. The title track with its rapid chord changes became an initiation rite for budding jazz musicians. With My Favorite Things, Coltrane turned away from traditional jazz and explored modal improvisation. The title track, a reinterpretation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, became a surprise hit and reached a wider audience than jazz fans. Coltrane’s handling of the soprano saxophone on this album was particularly influential and contributed to the popularisation of the instrument in jazz. Coltrane’s spiritual awakening in the early 1960s profoundly influenced his music. His fascination with Eastern philosophy and spirituality found expression in albums such as A Love Supreme (1964), a transformative work that is often regarded as his magnum opus. The four-part suite is a deeply personal and spiritual exploration in which Coltrane’s saxophone serves as a channel for divine expression. As bandleader, Coltrane assembled an extraordinary quartet that included McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. This ensemble, often celebrated as one of the greatest in the history of jazz, redefined the boundaries of improvisation and collective interplay. Coltrane’s insistence on spiritual exploration and musical innovation resonated with audiences and made him a leading figure in the avant-garde jazz movement.

Coltrane’s immeasurable influence

Coltrane’s impact went beyond music. His pursuit of spiritual understanding and social consciousness gave meaning to his work. At a time characterised by the struggles for civil rights, Coltrane’s compositions such as Alabama (1963) served as musical reflections on the racial injustice and violence that permeated American society. His music became a vehicle for social commentary and a call for justice. Tragically, Coltrane’s life was cut short when he succumbed to liver cancer on 17 July 1967 at the age of 40. However, his influence remained, shaping the development of jazz and inspiring generations of musicians of all genres. The Coltrane Changes, a harmonic progression developed by him, are still a fundamental element of jazz education. Coltrane’s posthumous releases, including Interstellar Space (1974) and A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle (2015), continue to captivate audiences and offer insights into the boundless creativity that defined his career. His influence on jazz, spirituality and social consciousness remains immeasurable, cementing his status as a transcendent figure in the annals of music history. John Coltrane’s enduring legacy is a testament to the transformative power of art and the indomitable spirit of a musical visionary.
